Nice to beat the Eagles

While it may not have been pretty, beating the Philadelphia Eagles is always a good thing. To be honest, beating them like that is kind of icing on the cake. You always like to pull games out when you are not at your best and the Packers did just that. The defense did its job but the Packers’ offense was woeful at best.

When the Eagles took a 13-10 lead, I figured the rout was on, but not on this day. Unlike last year in Philly, the Packers defense buckled down and held the Eagles in check the rest of the way. A very impressive performance against last year’s number two offense in the NFL.

A win is a win, but clearly the Packers need to figure out what to do on offense with such limited weapons. The Eagles defense owns the Packers though, so I’m not going to get to overly upset over yesterday’s performance. The way the Cowboys lit up the New York Giants defense last night, I’ll wait and see if the Packers can do a little better in the Meadowlands next week.

Bottom line is the Packers are 1-0 and going back to last season have won five straight. Brett Favre is now tied with John Elway for the most wins in NFL history with a good chance to beat that next week in New York. Who would have thought the Packers could win a game without scoring an offensive touchdown? Amazing. And judging from the smile on Favre’s face as he ran by me after the game, it didn’t matter.

    Hey Al,

If Ted Thompson doesn’t go out and get a PROVEN RB soon, Favre is going to get killed. It was sad they kept running that play with an extra TE in the game to help the ROOKIE block. Favre had almost zero time all day long and still managed to pass for over 200 yards. I really feel bad for #4. I sincerely feel T. Thompson has some kind of axe to grind re: Favre. >:-(

Nice to see Moss with a HUGE day yesterday. The Packers have ONE established receiver. Thanks for your all help Ted.

Prior to week 1 I thought the Pack was 50-50 to beat the G-men. Following our physical victory vs the Eagles and the loss of two key players on both offense and defense for the G-men, I see our chances at better than 75-25. Spread has G-men favored at home by 1 to 2 points. That looks juicy to me, especially when you factor in that Favre & Co. probably can’t play any worse than they did in week 1. The heat is on the OLine to improve. Jennings and Mo may be back. Rookies BJax, JJones and KHall should move up with a game under their belts. And the G-men defense looks mighty inviting. Cowboy TE was open all day. Unfortunately, Franks looked old and slow again once real bullets came out.

My only defensive concern is Al Harris. Given his physical style of play on the line of scrimmage, how will he fare as a one armed bandit?

G-men should sign Leftwich immediately or their season may be finished by the time Eli gets back. Leftwich has never had a good receiver corps to throw to so he could make it interesting. Derrick Ward can replace Jacobs. Tuck and Strahan can fill in for Osi Humanmanure, leaving Kiwanuka to be replaced by ??? at LB.

    Observations on Pack Week 1:

    (1) A win is a win……

    (2) Defense and ST were as billed….

    (3) AJ Hawk was MIA again. Film review shows he let himself be pushed (not even blocked) out of the way time and again. In space he grab tackles (and misses). And he often jumps on the pile after a play is over. Pack may as well blitz him every down since he is contributing next to nothing when he stays back. Barnett was a beast. Poppinga made several plays and had a good game. Hawk was MIA. Anyone else focus on Hawk in this game?

I think Farve is beginning to beleive he can fake anyone out. A number fo times he would drop back in shotgun formation and then try to hard count the defense but you could see that after the first couple of times they knew he was going to wait till the last second on the clock to hike the ball. Any defense at that level that can sit back and watch a QB in shot formation wait till 2 seconds on the clock to hke the ball will feel like it is Christmas and tee off on the QB. I fell sorry for the blame the O-line is getting. Farve should blame himself and sometimes quick count in shotgun like he does at the line.
On another point does Farve think he is doing any good getting ticked and making faces at his young reveivers when they drop one of his mis-thrown passes. If he really is a Hall of Fame QB he will adjust to them and their abilities or lack thereof…then again McCarthy and his play calling needs to be adjusted to better fit his very young and inexperienced players.

It depends…mixed reviews about Hawk…but you are right…he needs to brush off
the blockers quickly moving forward to stop the play.

the hawk comment is warranted but i don’t believe he consistently plays as described. last year he beat barnett to the tackle consistently. you’re right he was MIA on sunday but i was pretty impressed with him last year playing up to the level of barnett. let’s hope week 1 was a fluke.

    Michael,

I’ve thought the same thing about Favre for some years. If the guy didn’t run the right route, get him back in the huddle or on the sidlines and correct it there. There are times that he seems to be mugging for the camera.

I know it’s all about timing, and if the receivers aren’t on the same page as him, it’s all gonna look stupid. But calling your young guys out so publically just can’t be good.

Good point on the count, but I don’t think that mitigates the fact that the OL just plain got burned by what appears to be superior athletes. There did seem to be times that Favre just held the ball too long.

I didn’t hear Hawk’s name much, but the lack of scrambling yards and the reasonable totals from Westbrook speak well for the backers in general. I’ll watch him more closely in on Sunday.

The front 7 played a containment scheme to contain McNabb and limit Westbrook.
Next week will be a different story. No matter who starts for the Giants they will be a statue back there and Hawk should fly to the ball.
