Bears make me nervous

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Why the heck am I worried about a team that can only muster 245 yards-per-game of offense? The Packers are in danger of taking over the NFC North and that is what scares me. It’s too good to be true. But then again, in this NFL, you can go from the bottom to the top and vice-versa in a hurry. Just look at the two teams meeting tomorrow in Lambeau. Last year one was in the Super Bowl and the other one of the worst in the league through twelve games. Now the Packers are the Super Bowl contender and the Bears are just trying to save their season.

Due to injuries and quarterback problems the Bears are not the same team that won the NFC last year. Injuries have decimated the defense and Brian Griese for at least one game, doesn’t appear to be the answer at quarterback. The Bears have no business winning this game, but this is the Packers and Bears and anything can happen and usually does.

The possibility of rain no longer exists so weather will not be a factor, so look for Brett Favre to air it out once more against the banged up Bears’ secondary. The Packers need to pick up the blitzing like they did against the Vikings last week and make some big plays out of it. They need to make Lambeau Field a feared venue once again and tomorrow is a great time to make a statement.

I will be in my usual seats for the game and will have pictures posted Monday win or lose. I say win, 19-16.

Packers take another step

Monday, October 1st, 2007

The Green Bay Packers’ dehorning of the hapless Minnesota Vikings yesterday was a huge step even though they beat a bad, bad, football team. With the NFC North Division champs from a year ago coming to Lambeau Field this weekend for a Sunday Night game under the lights, the Packers were primed for an upset. Now that they took care of the Vikings, I have to believe they will kick the Bears behind this week. But of course, that is why they play the games.

The Packers’ eight-game winning streak is beyond belief in my eyes. I could see this back when the Packers were Super Bowl contenders, but after going 12-20 the last two years? Go figure. But the plan general manager Ted Thompson has seems to be working. His choice of head coach Mike McCarthy is a big part of that.

McCarthy’s ability to bring the best out of quarterback Brett Favre might quickly elevate him to “genius”  level if the Packers go deep in the playoffs. McCarthy will do what it takes to win the game if that means putting the ball in the hands of a three-time NFL Most Valuable Player, then that’s what he’ll do. Not a tough decision for a coach.

Favre is certainly on fire and a healthy Greg Jennings is one of the main reasons why. Without the No. 2 reciever on the field, opponents were much more prone to double-cover Donald Driver. While Driver still gets the job done, the two big touchdown catches the past two weeks by Jennings emphasize his importance. Jennings is the next big thing in Green Bay if you ask me.

Because of Favre, Jennings and Driver, not to mention rookie James Jones, the Packers appear to have found a way to win without a running game. It sure would be nice to balance the offense with a solid running game, but why can’t they keep winning via the pass? Why is that different than when a team with a strong running game pounds away and even though you know they are going to run you can’t stop them? For the last three games, the Packers have not been stopped even though everybody and their uncle knows they are going to pass. I mean, they don’t even attempt to hide the fact.

I have to think the Packers will not try to run the ball this week either, against the Bears’ defense that like the Vikings is better against the run than against the pass. Right now the Bears are a bad football team, a loss to a team in such dissaray would be a huge blow to the Packers’ psyche. McCarthy has his work cut out for him this week.
