Jordy Nelson?

General manager Ted Thompson has done it again, taking wide receiver Jordy Nelson with the Packers first pick in the 2008 NFL Draft which was actually the 36th pick in the draft after the Packers traded out of the first round with the New York Jets. If Nelson was the best player available left in the draft, the Packers and the rest of the league are in trouble. Nelson was ranked as about the tenth best receiver available if even rated at all. The Packers might have been able to sign him as a free agent or at least get him in later rounds. My prediction is the Packers will forever be questioned for not taking Brandon Flowers when they had the chance.

Maybe Thompson is counting on Nelson to be the return man they so desperately need, but he wasn’t a return man in college, so that could be a reach. Obviously this means the Koren Robinson experiment is probably over, as the Packers are now overloaded at receiver. Very interesting. I bet Thompson got booed at the stadium for the second year in a row.

More to come…

You said it. There were still some great players on the board too. The one the Cards just took, Campbell would probably have put Jenkins back on the bench. Weird thing is he could have probably gotten Nelson with the fourth round pick he got from the Jets. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Brohm or Booty there just in case Rodgers can beat the injury bug.

Nelson is pretty big. Maybe they have something in mind about making him bulk up to become that downfield TE threat that they can’t seem to find. I wouldn’t bet on it though.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON????????

Out of all the things we could have addressed, first WR, the QB?

Sign Culpepper, you don’t need anymore WRs and get a damn CB or lineman!

    I’M HOT!

thompson goes for his guy. his first choices seem counter-intuitive. i don’t count on the big talent, but the later guys are what we have to trust him on. it’s hard and i don’t believe we need the overload of young prospects given our situation, but we know what TT is giving us. let’s hope for some late gems.

Jordy Nelson is a great pick and fit for the Packers. Anyone that thinks he could be had in the fourth round or signed as a free agent should no longer be allowed to ever comment on the draft again because you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. Have you ever watched a game film on any player in your life? Or do you just sit at home passing time while at work reading other people’s mock drafts that they have posted (people clueless just like you) and get upset when the real talent evaluators supposedly get it wrong. You will like Nelson! Did you think that Donnie Avery would be the first WR taken in the Second Round? Probably not, but I’m sure there are reasons why teams needing WR passed on all the “Big Names”.

Take a look at Mr. Thompson’s draft record and your reactions to past drafts. Mr. Thompson and Mr. McCarthy have taken us from 4-12 to 8-8 and 13-3. He’s putting the best people on the bus. Do you think you know more than him? Aren’t you the same people who questioned James Jones and Aaron Rodgers? Give up, you are armchair GM’s at best. This Nelson kid basically dominated every game he played in the Big 12. Are you betting Koren Robinson can stay sober and he’s the answer at 4th receiver? I’d rather have a kid that’s 6’3″, 220 lbs, never had character issues and caught about 10 balls per game for 150 yds against teams in one of the top conferences.

Why do you people think you know more than Ted Thompson does? You don’t know any more than what you read from the so-called “experts”, and they don’t know crap either.

  • PeteH

Yes please, take alook at his drafts…all of them. He hasn’t done the masterful job at drafting that everyone thinks. He has made some good picks, but he also drafted the lot of crap that is our guards! If there was one position that didn’t need help, it was WR! The problem is not whether Nelson is any good or not, its that they now have to lose someone who is solid just to keep him. Thompson is going to eventually have to stop trying to just get younger, like that’s the end all be all of successful football. They already have the youngest team in the league. Sometimes you just have to get better! If you keep trading down to acquire picks, thats more people that have to be cut if they are even going to make the team. The Packers are pretty deep already. At some point you stop gaining by acquiring picks and end up hurting yourself by ending up with a bunch of marginal players. I bet if he could, Thompson would trade away every pick if he could end up with every 7th round pick in the league! Who would you rather have, Corey Williams or Jordy Nelson???? 20 million under the cap…pay someone!!!

I think 4-12 to 13-3 has less to do with Thompson and more to do with McCarthy.

    Thats coaching.

Now lets see happen now that number 4 is gone.

oh wait…most of you naysayers will tell the rest of us he sucked, was over the hill and good riddance.

Well we will see this fall.

Not sold on Jordy Nelson, but I watched a few shows leading up to the draft and Nelson was mentioned as possibly the best receiver by a couple analysts. One guy even predicted Nelson would go as a top 10 pick.

Kiper even said Nelson has potential to be the best receiver in the draft.

Now, that I’ve said that, WR was our strongest position coming into the draft. I hope Ted has a trade in the works.

I personally thought the Rodgers pick was a steal. And I follow the Big 12, I know who Jordy Nelson is. Yet, the pick puzzles me, but hopefully, I’ll eat my words. At best, Jordy will replicate James Jones’ rookie season. But we needed talent that would propel us to the Super Bowl, not to play Dallas or NY in the playoffs and get ran over by their PLAYMAKERS!

  • Ben Dover

    Ye of little faith lol.

Check out Jordy on youtube, the boy can flat out play. I thought Thompson was nuts trading for Ryan Grant so I will wait to pass judgment until he plays a game or two. Two QB’s ? I wonder what Rodgers is thinking ? Overall I’m pretty happy with the draft.

This year’s draft would not be the difference-maker to get to and win the Super Bowl, no matter who we take. Not many rookies have that much of an impact. Stop acting like this year’s draft is the answer to getting to the Super Bowl. This year’s draft is the way to get to the Super Bowl 2 or 3 years from now. I will agree with Pete on the O-line, we need more consistent play. Do any of you “experts” want to let us in on who that person would have been to shore up the O-line, draft pick or free agent?

  • Eisch

I disagree with you man, Nelson actually had 2 touchdowns on returns while at Kansas state, and had 264 yards on 5 returns, so I think he shows some hope in that regard. We’ll probably put him in the return game because Woodson probably won’t see return duty due to nagging foot injuries. I’m actually really excited about Nelson and think he will fit very very well with the packers We want Woodson as healthy as possible while our backup cornerbacks are still in process of learning, and so Lee can be familiarized with our defense. While Brandon Flowers is good, we still got Patrick Lee who is a super physical CB who will fit right into our system, matching Harris and Woodson.

I’m pretty content with the draft and am anxious to see what happens. I think McCarthy will be an amazing coach for Brohm, who fits perfectly with the west coast style that the packers have excelled at. His play action and accuracy are stellar, and he has the ability to mover around in and out of the pocket quite well. I give TT a thumbs up for this year. I have to admit I was shocked when we took Nelson, but the kid seems top notch, so for now, I’m going to just wait and see what the fall brings.

    GO PACK GO!!!

  • URanIdiot

Nice way to start a thread. Assuming that Jordy Nelson could have been had in free agency? If he was still available, he was a lock to go to the Indianapolis Colts at #59. The Colts were looking at Nelson to play the slot and KR. My guess is, TT fully expects him to return kicks and see limited action at WR. Besides,….if you are a Packers fan,….and you loved Brett Favre,….then Nelson should be your wet dream. He’s exactly like Brett Favre in every aspect except he’s a WR. His attitude and personality are exactly like Brett. In fact, it’s too bad Brett is gone, because I’m sure these two guys would have been best of friends and would have been electric on the field.

Reid, congratulations for taking the humble road, but you aren’t necessarily right. Your draft CAN propel you to the Super Bowl. And though most rookies will not turn out to be a Marques Colston or an Adrian Peterson, “talented” rookies will solidify your team in the areas that you need DEPTH. And we need depth mostly on the defensive side of the ball. I don’t think it takes an “expert” to realize that if we want to make a stake for the Super Bowl, we address areas we need help. This is unless TT and M&M want to do some 5-receiver sets again, then we need all Driver, Jennings, Jones, Nelson, Swain, and hell, add Martin and Robinson in there too, they can block for the other 5. lol

  • Reid

I honestly thought we should have drafted Chuck Norris. He, alone, would have won the Super Bowl for us. But the roundhouse kick was outlawed by the league in a controversial vote shortly after Chuck Norris and 3 second grade girls beat the 1972 Miami Dolphins in a little-known exhibition game played in Miami’s Orange Bowl in January of 1973. The roundhouse kick made the horse-collar tackle look like a friendly handshake. So, trading all of our draft picks to move up to #1 to take Chuck Norris wouldn’t have worked. I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out what Bishop, Chillar or Poppinga, Hodge(health?) can do backing up at LB; Blackmon, Culver, Bush, Patrick Lee, Rouse, etc at DB, and the 10 or so D-linemen can do. It’s a sure bet that someone will get hurt, but it appears to me that we have plenty of folks who’ve proven they can play in the NFL at times and should improve from their experience the last year or two. I still have Chuck’s rookie card, but I’m not willing to sell it.

Well, i have seen Jordy play in college numerous times. he really is that good. kid has heart too. people at Kstate love him. he is an all american and actually pretty smart. his attitude fits the packers well. im very glad we picked him, especially since i live in kansas. he beat Talib the cornerback taken in the top 15. he beat him deep, and was the only reason people questioned Talib. Driver is getting older, Jennings cant take a ton of hits, jones is good and so is robinson. but Jordy is going to be good, we thought we had to many D lineman last year, but no one thought that at the end of the year….

  • TRIP

Reid, I’m sure you use Chuck Norris to get out many conversations. lol

  • Reid

TRIP, it doesn’t surprise me that you didn’t “get it”.
