Favre-gate gets more bizarre

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

The distraction that is Brett Favre continues to take amazing turns almost every other day. Now reports are that the Packers offered Favre money to stay retired. I highly doubt it and Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reported tonight that the Packers did not do anything of the sort. This is not “The Sopranos” for heaven’s sake.

What I want to know is how nine hours of “confidential meetings” can take place and all of sudden somebody knows exactly what was discussed. Give me a break. My guess is the nine hours were spent trying to find a new home for Favre, which is going to be tough knowing the Packers will have to eventually release him.

I may have bought in to the cell phone debacle because I know Favre isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, but this story is even beyond that. Ted Thompson is not so dumb that he doesn’t know when he is talking to Bus Cooke and Brett Favre he is talking to the public. It’s like talking to the suck-up at work, you better watch what you say. Favre has been playing his case in the media because he is “Brett Favre”. The Packers won’t play that game.

I’ve said this before, but we have to be getting close to the end. The Jets have increased interest according to reports and if Favre agrees, the Packers should take the bag of footballs the Jets offer and pull the trigger. This whole affair is just remarkable. In the end, Favre wants to play football again. That’s OK. The problem is the Packers already have a starting quarterback. No problem. The Packers can trade Favre. Big problem. Favre apparently only wants to play in Green Bay. That is why we are in this situation.

If Favre would agree to play for another team, this whole thing could be put to rest. Which is why, I think, that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has not granted Favre his reinstatement yet. If Favre thinks he is going to practice in Green Bay, he is dumber than even I think he is. The Packers will not put $12 million on the practice field for a player who is not a starter and won’t be on the roster opening day.

The end is coming. Some will like it, some won’t. I promise you that I will be much more civilized going forward. We have all been through a lot, it’s time to settle down and cheer the 2008 Packers to victory. I still think this team is a Super Bowl contender, no matter who is under center.

Can we all just get along? Please.  Peace out.

There are other issues to worry about

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

All this quarterback attention has taken away the attention from the rest of the Green Bay Packers and obviously is the biggest distraction of all time. There are plenty of other issues the Packers need to be worried about and it starts with the defensive line. Johnny Jolly may be suspended, Colin Cole is coming off injury, Ryan Pickett is currently hurt, and Ted Thompson’s worst draft pick of all time – Justin Harrell might be out for the year before it even starts. If you can get a defensive lineman for the quarterback you are trying to trade, I would take it. Is The Fridge available?

If it wasn’t for the quarterback controversy that isn’t, things are looking good for the Green Bay Packers. Practices have been sharp and the players seem to be dealing with the distraction as best they can. There has been no divisiveness that has been made public and even the veterans have thrown their support around the new quarterback.

The fact that nine hours of meetings today resulted in no new news is not a good sign that an end is anywhere in sight. There is nothing left to say. What do you want to hear? More BS? I’m sick of it. The Packers should be, too. I can’t see the player coming back to Green Bay.

Merry Christmas Minnesota. Be careful what you wish for.

Grant getting bad advice

Monday, July 28th, 2008

I thought the “the man who used to play quarterback in Green Bay” saga was the most unbelievable thing I’ve seen in my life but this Ryan Grant debacle trumps it on all sides. This is the first “exclusive rights” contract holdout in NFL history. Apparently Grant thinks he is Walter Payton or something. Listen to some of these quotes from a man who obviously has no clue to what he is doing.

“I couldn’t be more disappointed,” Grant’s agent Alan Herman said Sunday night. “I always said that I was cautiously optimistic, based on the rhetoric that Green Bay takes care of their own, and this is what we get after the clock is striking 12. After 5½ months of trying to get a deal done, we get a grand total of $1.7 million (signing bonus) and a $2 million contract for this year, which is the biggest joke.”

OK, lets look at this. Number one, Grant has no bargaining power, the most the Packers would have to pay him is like $375,000 a year. I think two million a year is a pretty good upgrade for a guy who hasn’t proven anything. Samkon Gado did the same thing Grant did and I don’t see him making millions. In fact, I don’t see him in the NFL anymore. What makes anyone think Grant is any different?

Here is another one:

“Every time I called for 5½ months, there was another reason why they weren’t ready to begin,” Herman said. “(Serious talks) started a week ago Friday, and they finally make me a proposal with less than 24 hours before training camp and it has a total of $1.7 million guaranteed, I said, ‘Russ, are you kidding me?’ I’m going to make a six-year commitment, and you’re giving me $1.7 million. You gave $3 million to Poppinga, who you indicated is going to be a backup player.”

So, I guess a two-year starter in Brady Poppinga should get paid less than a eight game starter in Ryan Grant. I don’t think so Alan.

It gets better. Check this out:

“I have really nothing to say to the Packers at this point because I’m so astounded,” Herman said. “I can tell you that I will not be calling Russ Ball. When he’s got something that resembles making sense, I’ll be happy to talk to him.

“All I can do is go back to my original proposal. As a matter of fact, I should probably up my proposal based on what Devin Hester just got (from the Chicago Bears).”

OK, Alan, you think Grant is better than Hester? Wow. I’ll take an even trade any day of the week. The bottom line is Ryan Grant has no options and is getting bad advice. The Packers have already replaced Grant with Brandon Jackson, who by all accounts has had a tremendous offseason and even running backs’ coach Edgar Bennett said Jackson has the ability to be an every down player.

Just when you thought things could not get any more bizarre in Green Bay, under the radar, they have. Simply unbelievable. I can guarantee you the Packers will not have a problem replacing Ryan Grant. Jackson is the future at running back in my mind and the sooner it happens the better.

Grant may have already lost his job, and that’s fine with me. Maybe he can catch passes from “the man who used to play quarterback in Green Bay” in Mississippi to keep in shape. Good luck with that.

Favre needs to just go away

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

I’m sick of Brett Favre. Pure and simple. He is a little baby that has never done anything wrong. His latest tirade on ESPN is further proof that he thinks he is the greatest quarterback in the NFL. A legend in his own mind. I worshipped the guy for 16 years and now I find out he is nothing more than a big baby. Brett, go away mad, Brett please go away.

If you think for one second that Ted Thompson said “Brett, you can’t do that – you’ll get me fired”, I have a bridge in Green Bay for sale. Favre is so far off his rocker it is not even funny anymore. Anybody who thinks he is not bipolar is worse off than Favre himself. Favre admitted to talking to the Vikings head coach Brad Childress and pretty much made the case for the Packers to win the tampering charge. Favre is dumber than a box or rocks. Why is Favre asking Vikings coach Brad Childress if he thinks he can still play? Sack of hammers mabye? Whatever. What an idiot.

I have never seen such a classless person than Brett Favre. Maybe that is how all people from Kiln, Mississippi act. Maybe that is the norm. All I know is that one of the greatest iron men in NFL history is the biggest wimp in the history of the league. Cry me a river Brett, cry, cry and cry some more. I will still worship Favre’s accomplishments to the Packers and enjoy watching the highlights and knowing I was at every home game he ever played, one of the greatest of all time no doubt. But now I will also know him as a little girl who was more worried about himself than the team, which explains why he has only one Super Bowl ring

I say ship him to Minnesota. And let me play defense opening day. The iron man streak will come to a quick end. The winningest quarterback in NFL history is also the leagues biggest loser. Simply unbelievable. If Favre wanted to fuck the Packers over, he sure did. All I ask for is five minutes alone with Favre. He wouldn’t play football any more, that is for sure.

And if you don’t like my view, don’t visit Packernet. I could care less. Packernet will survive as long as I want it to survive. I’m a Green Bay Packers’ fan and will always support the team. The team is going with Aaron Rodgers so that is where my support is. Not once in three years did I hear Rodgers complain about playing behind the baby, even though he may have thought he should have been playing. Rodgers has shown more class in his three years here than Favre did in 16 years. The Packers are Super Bowl bound in my mind.

I wonder what Javon Walker and Sterling Sharpe have to think about this. Favre calls them out then turns around and does the same shit. What a hypocrite. Of all the ways to go out. All I wanted was for Brett to be a Packer forever. Now it might be years before the Packers to retire Favre’s number. What is next? Is Favre going to attack Bob Harlan? This is it for me. Favre is dead in my mind. I’m looking forward to a Super Bowl run in 2008.

Go Pack!!!

Packers can now release Favre

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

The Green Bay Packers can now release retired quarterback Brett Favre and not have to worry about him coming back to haunt them, even if that means Favre ends up in Minnesota. With the entire league knowing Favre could be had, only two teams expressed interest and that interest was luke-warm at best and now seems to be no interest. Sure, nobody wants to give up a draft pick for somebody they know is going to be released in the near future, but still, this Brett Favre. You would think there would be one team that would want to bring him if only for ticket sales. Doesn’t say much about what the league thinks Favre has left in the tank, does it?

Almost all the teams have begun training camp so wherever Favre goes he will already have missed time learning the new offense and working with his new receivers. Hardly a formula for success. It may end being Favre gets his release from the Packers and ends up staying retired. The only teams that need a quarterback are bad ones with few exceptions. I still say Baltimore is the best place for Favre.

The time has come to put this all behind us and “jump on board now or shut your mouth” as Rodgers would say. Like Mike McCarthy said 12 times in press conference yesterday – “Aaron Rodgers is our starting quarterback.” No amount of crying or bad-mouthing management is going to change that. This whole saga has brought out the Brett Favre fans and the Green Bay Packers fans and divided the two. Half of the Brett Favre fans are Packers’ fans only because of Favre and will not continue to follow the team, which is fine. There will be a whole new batch of Rodgers fans to take their place.

Yes, this is bold move by the Green Bay Packers, but only really because Favre is such a fan favorite. Football-wise, it was probably an easy decision. Rodgers has the weight of the world on his shoulders and Green Bay Packers’ fans need to support him and help him make the team a winner. Hopefully Favre fans will either go away quietly or jump on board. I think it is going to be a very good year in Green Bay. How about Rodgers against Rivers in the Super Bowl? Two QBs who had to bide their time for a few years leading their teams to greatness.

The king is dead, long live the king.

Thompson has support of Executive Commitee

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

If Ted Thompson is worried about all the bashing he is getting from Brett Favre in this Brett Favre instigated ordeal, he can take heart in that his bosses are strongly in his corner. According to JSOnline as most of you have already read, Peter Platten III, President of the Packers’ Executive Committee said in part “we wholeheartedly supported him. There was no disagreement.” We as in the committee and him as in Ted Thompson.

Platten also said “I look at this as a no-win situation. In the end we need to do what’s best for the Green Bay Packers. And that’s what we’re going to do.” What can possibly be wrong with that?

Now, after make noise the last two nights on national television with the Fox interview, Favre, through his agent said they have no plans to file for reinstatement at this time. Maybe Brett is coming to his senses and retires after all. Obviously, he can’t just walk into a another team’s training camp halfway through and expect to have a great year. The rule says he has until week six of the NFL season to change his mind in order to play this year. Can he help somebody at that point? What could the Packers get for him then?

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of Favre….

By the way, as anyone noticed that the Packers haven’t signed any of their draft picks with training camp opening ten days from now? What is up with that?

Favre won’t compete for starting job

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Finally we got the bottom line. When asked by Greta if he would compete for the starting job in Green Bay this year, Brett Favre said “Why”? After praising Aaron Rodgers up an down Favre must not believe in his heart can beat out the youngster. Since when is the NFL about handing jobs to players just because they played good the last year? Winning football games is what it all about and the players that are starting on opening day are the ones that earned it through six weeks of training camp. Nobody is handed a job.

I cannot believe that Favre isn’t confident enough in his ability to go win his job back. That is like Tiger Woods saying he doesn’t think he can win the Masters again. In 16 years in Green Bay that has to be the most stunning answer to any question that Brett Favre has ever been asked. And there have been thousands. I don’t know what else to say. It’s clear he is welcome back but he will have to earn his job. What is wrong with that. If I retired four months ago and then four months later said “sorry boss, I made a mistake. Can I have my job back”? He would laugh and say “pick up the broom”. What is minimum wage these days?

Either grow a pair and come to camp and compete or retire for the third time in six months. Those are basically all the options Favre has. Unless some team is willing to cough up a first-day draft pick, the Packers have no other choice. My guess is Favre doesn’t have the balls to try to beat out Rodgers and retires again. Of course he will blame the Packers for pushing him out the door and not allowing him to play for another team. I think we can cancel the Favre number retirement ceremony scheduled for opening day this year, regardless of whether Favre is playing football or not. If Favre is playing obviously it’s off, but after all this BS the last few weeks and Favre doesn’t play, I doubt the Packers or Favre will want to make nice that soon. Look for a year’s postponement on that puppy.

I will say Favre did say some good things in this half of the interview, he went out of his way not to rip Rodgers. Some of the things I thought I was going to hear from news reports today I didn’t hear. Favre is Favre and wears his emotions on his sleeve, it was almost like his retirement press conference, after the emotions subsided he started talking a little sense. Maybe in the next two weeks he will come to his senses even more and make one of two choices – beat out Rodgers for his job or stay retired. My guess is he quits again.

Greta is a joke

When did Minneapolis get a team? What a joke this is…

Just for the record…

…I’m not watching tonight. I’d like to keep my dinner down.

Brett needs love

Monday, July 14th, 2008

According to excerpts from the Favre interview on Fox News tonight Favre admits he didn’t feel the love from the Green Bay Packers. I guess Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy should have got down on their knees and done whatever was necessary to make the fragile Favre want to come back. If only my simple request in January would have been answered. It would have saved us a lot of trouble. Brett has gone away but Brett has gone away mad. So long and good riddance. I don’t care if the Packers ever win another game…
