Grant getting bad advice

I thought the “the man who used to play quarterback in Green Bay” saga was the most unbelievable thing I’ve seen in my life but this Ryan Grant debacle trumps it on all sides. This is the first “exclusive rights” contract holdout in NFL history. Apparently Grant thinks he is Walter Payton or something. Listen to some of these quotes from a man who obviously has no clue to what he is doing.

“I couldn’t be more disappointed,” Grant’s agent Alan Herman said Sunday night. “I always said that I was cautiously optimistic, based on the rhetoric that Green Bay takes care of their own, and this is what we get after the clock is striking 12. After 5½ months of trying to get a deal done, we get a grand total of $1.7 million (signing bonus) and a $2 million contract for this year, which is the biggest joke.”

OK, lets look at this. Number one, Grant has no bargaining power, the most the Packers would have to pay him is like $375,000 a year. I think two million a year is a pretty good upgrade for a guy who hasn’t proven anything. Samkon Gado did the same thing Grant did and I don’t see him making millions. In fact, I don’t see him in the NFL anymore. What makes anyone think Grant is any different?

Here is another one:

“Every time I called for 5½ months, there was another reason why they weren’t ready to begin,” Herman said. “(Serious talks) started a week ago Friday, and they finally make me a proposal with less than 24 hours before training camp and it has a total of $1.7 million guaranteed, I said, ‘Russ, are you kidding me?’ I’m going to make a six-year commitment, and you’re giving me $1.7 million. You gave $3 million to Poppinga, who you indicated is going to be a backup player.”

So, I guess a two-year starter in Brady Poppinga should get paid less than a eight game starter in Ryan Grant. I don’t think so Alan.

It gets better. Check this out:

“I have really nothing to say to the Packers at this point because I’m so astounded,” Herman said. “I can tell you that I will not be calling Russ Ball. When he’s got something that resembles making sense, I’ll be happy to talk to him.

“All I can do is go back to my original proposal. As a matter of fact, I should probably up my proposal based on what Devin Hester just got (from the Chicago Bears).”

OK, Alan, you think Grant is better than Hester? Wow. I’ll take an even trade any day of the week. The bottom line is Ryan Grant has no options and is getting bad advice. The Packers have already replaced Grant with Brandon Jackson, who by all accounts has had a tremendous offseason and even running backs’ coach Edgar Bennett said Jackson has the ability to be an every down player.

Just when you thought things could not get any more bizarre in Green Bay, under the radar, they have. Simply unbelievable. I can guarantee you the Packers will not have a problem replacing Ryan Grant. Jackson is the future at running back in my mind and the sooner it happens the better.

Grant may have already lost his job, and that’s fine with me. Maybe he can catch passes from “the man who used to play quarterback in Green Bay” in Mississippi to keep in shape. Good luck with that.

And what about this Alan Herman? He is the biggest crybaby of an agent I have ever seen. Frankly, I would be embarassed if he represented me. Alan was burned this week because he was talking about a monster deal with the Packers during the entire off-season. Wah! Wah! Wah! Let Ryan Grant play for more than eight games before he gets a huge deal. The Packers said they take care of their own and they demonstrated the manner is which they do that this week: they signed Poppinga to a contract extension after he has been manning the trenches for four years. I can’t believe Herman has the nerve to compare Poppinga’s signing bonus to a player that has only played eight games for the Packers! Does Aaron Rodgers have the right to demand a new contract because he had a great game against the Cowboys and has shown leadership this off-season? No. Give me break! The employees have a tremendous opportunity to make a king’s ransom to play a game. Suck it up, play consistently for another year or so and some team will take care of Grant. Whatever happened to earning your keeps!

I don’t want to hear it from the whiners.

Go Pack and Say Yah to Da UP Eh!

Well Al, I finally agree with you. What a putz! Now see, this reminds me of Javon Walker’s punk ass. Someone tell Grant to remember his playoff performances. Yes he recovered well from 2 fumbles in 3 touches to have a monster game, but that doesn’t happen if he isn’t picked up by his team. He then followed that up with what 20 yards!! on a day when we absolutuely needed him. FUCK HIM! Jackson showed some real progress as the season went on. Maybe Grant should go ask Walker what he would do if he could go back in time. Either that or he can go play with the fucking Raiders with Walker

I had been on Grant’s side for most of the off-season, but this is just stupid. No player can sit out training camp when there is a good backup for there position on the field and seriously think that they will keep there job. Come on Grant, I thought that you had more class then that..

Ease up, its just posturing. No 25yr old RB with 8 games experience is going to get anywhere near what hes asking. He probably cant get long term over 4 yrs because of his age anyway. Dont sweat Grant. I liked him too, but just like Arod, I’ll give Jackson another chance.

  • Dan

Let Grant sit. The NFC Championship game, the Giants were dropping their LBs into pass coverage. Grant should have put up big numbers, but had one of the worst Packers running games in Packers playoff history. In that weather, the Packers needed Grant and he was no where.

This is falling perfectly into McCarthy’s 2-back attack plans.
Jackson will perform in the first preseason game and Grant will cave in. After that, we can alternate the two. Then, give the ball more to whoever performs on that day.

  • monkeon

    The Packers should cut him.

    Who needs him?

  • Zach

Ryan Grant…..lol. Pack your bags, buddy. Will miss your fumbles.

  • CheesyD

This is just Grant’s agent trying to take advantage of the Favre mess. He must figure the Packers are getting so much pressure on the Favre fiasco that they would cave to Grant just to shut him up. Looks like this agent guessed wrong. Here’s hoping TT maintains his stance on Grant, and on Favre.

  • Travis

Wow. I can’t believe how much the posters on this board know what’s what. Nice job. I stand with you peeps and TT easily on Grant, and with a lot more sadness on what Favre’s become. Toronto says …. Go Pack Go !!!

  • TRIP

One thing about TT, he doesn’t seem fazed by the turmoil. I like it, I think you need management that’s willing to manage from their best perspective (which obviously isn’t emotions.) This Ryan Grant case makes me upset because of his potential with the the Packers. There is no Ahmad Green, there is no Dorsey Levens, and with the new QB coming in, Grant was in position to continue is insurgency as a part of this new era in Packers football.

Now, I understand that these players get hurt bad once and they get cut from the team and you never hear about them again and that’s why they want to get paid, NOW! But Grant, you don’t have contract leverage after a half season. One really good playoff game backed up by one really bad game doesn’t show the Packers your guns when we needed a playmaker to make a game-changing play.

As for his representation, he MUST be a moron. This guy, Alan Herman, sounds like a washed up agent, Drew Rosenhaus-wannabe what wants to cash in for his own ailing career, himself. Grant plays like 10 games and he starts comparing him to established Packers and elite players around the league? Give me a break! Does Grant not know that he got his opportunity to play when someone got hurt? Does he think Brandon Jackson will not take advantage of his contract whining? If this continues, I hope TT finds a way to keep this team focuses and sits all the distractions on the bench. Don’t release anybody!

    Well…. He got paid.
