Trade good for both sides

The Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre finally ended their drawn-out drama by the team trading Favre to the New York Jets. This is a deal that works for both sides. The Jets get Favre obviously at a late stage in his career but coming off a great season, the Packers get a draft pick that can escalate to a first round pick if the Jets reach the Super Bowl. Granted that is unlikely but the deal is fair for both parties. And we should all wish Favre well because the better he does the better it is for the Green Bay Packers.

I think if everybody acted like they did today and communicated with each other in the same manner, I’m referring to the press conferences by the Packers’ brass and now by Brett Favre, this situation would have been settled in March. It seems neither side gave the other a chance. There are about a million “if only” situations in this saga that could have changed things but it didn’t happen and as Al Harris likes to say “you know, it is what it is.”

Favre admitted he wanted to play for a division opponent so he could stick it to the Packers, but he said he got over it quickly. He did seem genuinely upset that he was not welcome back in Green Bay, though. A wound that will take years to heal. Don’t expect that number retirement for a long time. Packers’ head coach Mike McCarthy and even Favre himself said that Favre would still be a Packer forever and we know time will heal all wounds. Ted Thompson won’t be the general manager here forever, and that is Favre’s main rival in all of this. For whatever reason those two never clicked. It seems every year Favre was complaining about management not doing enough to help the team even though the team improved by four wins in 2006 to 8-8 and to 14-4 last year. What is there not to like about that?

Thompson admitted he was not comfortable as being “the guy who traded Brett Favre” and didn’t even want to sign the official trade papers, but he did sign and Brett Favre is a New York Jet. If Aaron Rodgers needed any further affirmation that he is the guy he just got it. The Packers commitment to Rodgers not only puts the jobs of Thompson and McCarthy on the line it also presents an interesting dilemma to the huge contingence of Packers’ fans that want Thompson and McCarthy fired. Do they root for their favorite team to lose? Do you boo Aaron Rodgers to help facilitate that? Like players always say “hard times don’t build character, they reveal it,” the true character of Packers’ fans will be reveled in the next few weeks.

Let’s hope there is more character shown by the masses than some of us, myself included, have shown in this blog during this ordeal. It’s over, and from now on my only subjects will be the members of the Green Bay Packers and what is going on during a season I hope can still  be successful. That doesn’t mean I’m going to be all warm-and-fuzzy when or if things go bad, you should know me better than that. When the football starts I have to call it as I see it, for better or worse.

Football starts Monday for the Green Bay Packers. Good timing in the end. It would have sucked if the Packers had to play tonight like the Jets do. My guess is it would have embarrassing on all accounts. Now the team has a few days to get ready without distraction and the process really begins. The players almost to a man said the team was relieved and practiced at a new level yesterday and today. As Favre said in his press conference, “we’re moving forward.” I couldn’t be happier with the deal, now I can root for both sides. Favre is in the AFC and will never play the Packers unless it is in a Super Bowl Wouldn’t that be ironic if that happened in Tampa Bay this year?

As Vince Lombardi used to say, “now we start the big push.” Let’s get it on and Go Pack!

More to come…

    The curse of the Brett’
GREEN BAY — For all those who loyally stood by the judgment of management against Brett Favre, did you notice it just got darker in Green Bay? That’s the national spotlight leaving, the spotlight that’s been on this city since 1992.

Brett Favre has been one of the five biggest names in all of sports for the past two decades because of his character and ability. And don’t undervalue how important that was to Wisconsin. That directly lead to the Packers’ ability to refurbish Lambeau, become a top 10 revenue team, and be a destination for free agents — not to mention the economic benefits for the state, TV stations, newspapers, etc.

Over the years, watch revenues decline, watch the nationally televised games disappear, watch free agents stay away, and watch the quality players disappear.
The only appeal the Packers ever had outside of Wisconsin was just traded to the Jets. The Favre era allowed a new generation to relive the ’60s in Titletown. Now a new generation gets to relive the ’70s and ’80s.

Just remember it was the judgment of Packers management that caused it. Just ask the Red Sox how long it took them to recover after they traded Babe Ruth.

  • Larry

Steven, I believe that a sold out stadium for 40 years or more provided revenue for refurbish. I do not believe team revenue will diminish as long as revenue sharing is in place. Most player induced revenue, like jerseys, etc. are league sanctioned. The spinoff revenue like parking and hot dogs will continue as long as the waiting list for season tickets exists. You can count on one hand the free agents who brought glory to Green Bay. I’m sure I’m not remembering so good other than Reggie and Woodson, but as I recall the biggest names ever brought in have been through draft and trade. This includes Favre. Besides DTV NFL option is available for any diehard GBP fan who wants to pay the price and lives beyond commuting distance. Please explain the economic benefits to the state, TV stations, newspapers, etc., I dont get it. As to the Babe, the ’70s, and the ’80s—pure and simple lousy teams. Besides, who said there wasn’t a Packer nation out there from ’69 to ’92?

  • TRIP

If anyone has a Brett Favre love affair its because they are appalled at how much morons like Al, who credit all recent success to TED THOMPSON, like he’s ever thrown an NFL pass in his life, totally discredit one of the Packers organization’s best players ever. I am a fan of the Green Bay Packers but I also am a fan of Brett Favre. This, “this is a Packers website go to the Jets website” bullcrap is ridiculous, idiotic. Brett Favre will be a discussion of PACKERS FANS FOR THE NEXT 50 YEARS, nevertheless a week after ballsy Teddy traded him.

Al: “Packers win, Favre loses, this game.” + Al: “Trade good for both sides” = Bi-polar!

The bottom line is, Ted Thompson’s move can be justified if Aaron Rodgers is a near-immediate success. It has to be nearly immediate because this team just went to the NFC Championship. A 2-3 season turnaround means a huge loss of opportunity from a team that could win the NFC this year. We’ll know how good of a decision this was in 5 months, but the bottom line, people are going to speculate until then. Goodness, all we read on this site is far-fetched speculation. To say that Favre is a non-discussion is crazy. I’ll move on and support my team, but I won’t forget, lol.

Al, you need pills. But maybe I enjoy your sick irrationality.

  • Michael Legat

    TRIP,

If we get back to the NFC Championship game in 2-3 years, it will be a rousing success. Since Green Bay hit the Super Bowl twice in 97 & 98 there has only been one team that’s made it to the NFC Championship two years in a row: the Philadelphia Eagles made it 4 years in a row and it took them until the last year to actually win the game. Outside of Philly, NO ONE has repeated an NFC Championship appearance.

Injuries and dumb luck play too much of a part of the game of football to expect an NFC title every year. If this team is a competitive, playoff-caliber team, then it’s all good. Remember, we are in the same situation that we would be in whenever Favre no longer played for the Green Bay Packers. It was going to happen eventually, and at least the team around Rodgers has proven itself capable.

  • Larry

Damn, Legat, another home run. My support for the team has never waivered since the 50s. I’ve criticized hireing Bart, with no coaching experience, but not Devine, with great college credentials. I didn’t like spending all that money on Reggie, but look how that turned out. The Hadl trade looked good at the time, but killed us for years. JJ what a bust, but Dickey OK. It was tough to let go of Lofton and Walker, but look how good drafting the “Gold Dust Twins” turned out; many, many, happy and sad memories. Through it all, win or lose, its something you can’t really explain. It’s not really support for the trancients like BF, MM, or TT, but for the organization as a whole that goes back to the ’20s and that legacy can never be taken away. Bad decicisions along the way, sure, but many good ones too. We’ll survive like we always do.

  • CheesyD

Now we’re worried about being in the “national spotlight”?

Winning games is all it takes to stay in the spotlight.

Besides, the Green Bay Packers are America’s Team. That doesn’t change just because Brett Favre chose to go elsewhere.

  • Jon

Michael Legay wrote: “Remember, we are in the same situation that we would be in whenever Favre no longer played for the Green Bay Packers.”

    That’s a truism.

What you and the tedophiles continue to ignore is that Green Bay is not in the situation it would be in IF FAVRE WERE PLAYING FOR THE GREEN BAY PACKERS: POISED TO MAKE ANOTHER DEEP RUN INTO THE PLAYOFFS – OR BETTER.

With Favre, Green Bay would be primed for a deep run into the playoffs; with Rodgers, that will simply not happen.

So basically, Teddy has thrown away a likely deep run into the playoffs this year for the challenge of developing a quarterback who has never started an NFL game.

The tedophiles can pretend all they want that Teddy has not thrown away a run at the Super Bowl, but the Green Bay players aren’t going for it. I have heard from reliable sources that already there are rumblings among some players about Teddy throwing away a shot at the Super Bowl (all so he can assuage his ego).

Watch for the fallout on the field. These players are young and emotional, and if you think they’re not affected when they see their own coach and manager throw away a run at the Suer Bowl, you’ve never put on shoulder pads (right, Al?).

This “situation” is indeed akin to the situation the Dolphins were in when Jimmy Johnson forced Dan Marino out the door. Actually, Green Bay’s situation is worse, because at least Marino had a terrible final season with the Dolphins and so Johnson had some justification. But look at all the success the Dolphins have had since they forced Marino out the door! LOL.

  • Jon

    Hey Allie,

When are you going to remove from your website the photo of Favre leading the Packers out onto the field?

It’s time for one showing Teddy running out on the field leading his boy Aaron and the other Packers.

    LOL.

  • Jon

    Mikey Legay,

By your own numbers, the past 12 NFC Championship games have seen a repeat team 6 times: Green Bay 2 times, and Philadelphia 4 times.

6 of 12 is half the time.

    That’s 50% of the time.

So stop trying to make excuses for why the Packers won’t make it back to the NFC Championship game this year.

Their failure to “repeat” will have nothing to do with how “rare” the feat is; it’ll have everything to do with the manager’s and coach’s decision to dump its best player – the quarterback, no less – for someone who’s never started a game.

    Reap what you sow.

  • CheesyD

“I have heard from reliable sources that already there are rumblings among some players about Teddy throwing away a shot at the Super Bowl”

    ROFLMAO!!!

    Such a silly boy.

  • http://orlando Mark

Boys we’ve got to stop this. We’re all Packer fans or we wouldn’t be so upset. What’s done is done, we’ll see the results in 3 months. I wish Brett well and the Packers. He said he’s getting over it, we should too.

  • Oconomowockid

I like the effort to keep lowering the bar for this team. If Favre was still on the team and we didn’t win the division and go deep into the playoff the same people would call the year a failure. Boys lets have it one way or the other.

Many of you state every day, we are a better team without Favre. No excuses, no steps backwards, no give Aaron Rodgers a couple of years to get experience. I will always support Aaron and the Packers but I don’t want to hear we have to give it a few years, because we didn’t have to. Lets win and lets win now.

I am sure Dallas is not sitting around saying if we make the NFL championship game in 2-3 years that is going to be a success.

    No excuses!!

  • Jon

Oconomowockid writes: “I like the effort to keep lowering the bar for this team.”

Exactly right. Green Bay was supposed to be better without Favre, but now that Favre is gone, Green Bay is supposed to be worse.

    LOL.

  • Michael Legat

Oh, Jon. If I were “Legay,” you’d be my bitch.

Trollboy Jon says “IF FAVRE WERE PLAYING FOR THE GREEN BAY PACKERS: POISED TO MAKE ANOTHER DEEP RUN INTO THE PLAYOFFS – OR BETTER.”

Somehow this is not also a truism.

Trollboy Jon says “So basically, Teddy has thrown away a likely deep run into the playoffs this year for the challenge of developing a quarterback who has never started an NFL game.”

Just like Bill Cowher did with Ben Rothlisberger.

Trollboy Jon says “I have heard from reliable sources that already there are rumblings among some players about Teddy throwing away a shot at the Super Bowl (all so he can assuage his ego).”

Your Brett Favre action figure does not count as a reliable source.

Trollboy Jon says “By your own numbers, the past 12 NFC Championship games have seen a repeat team 6 times: Green Bay 2 times, and Philadelphia 4 times. 6 of 12 is half the time. That’s 50% of the time.”

Wow, when you put it that way, I guess that it’s totally commonplace after all. (eyes roll deep into back of head). Plus, technically it’s only a repeat three times for Philadelphia and 1 time for Green Bay. The first time isn’t technically a repeat – this could be either a fact or a truism.

Trollboy Jon says “LOL”. A lot.

Assuming that Trollboy Jon is a 14-year old girl might be a truism.

  • packer_bob

If the Packers don’t have a successful year THIS year and it is demonstrable that is it is quarterback related, than the blame has to be layed directly at the feet of TT.

Let’s not kid ourselves here—the decision was made by the Three, with I believe Thompson as ringleader, that they did not want Favre back. I believe that to be a terrible decision for a variety of reasons, but these are the sort of calls these guys are paid to make.

The Packers were an incredible surprise last year and had Favre not retired the Packers would have to be a favorite to win the division and and at least considered one of the top five favorites to win the Super Bowl. If this decision to trade Favre rather than welcome him back backfires, than fans will have the right to look at the men responsible for answers.

Success for the Packers should start this season, and surely within two seasons, for this decision to be considered the correct one. If the results aren’t there, than TT et al should have to answer for it.

  • Reid

    packer_bob,

Well said and this is a great perspective on this whole mess. Maybe we should add that this will also be determined by how #4 does for the Jets. I’m fairly confident he will do well, but he’s going to be 39 and you never know.

No one can accurately predict whether Rodgers and Favre will prove this to be a good, bad, or indifferent decision. One thing is for sure, I’ll be rooting for the Green and Gold no matter what and I refuse to publicly criticize my team, it’s players, coaches, or management.

  • Dan

Let the analysis begin tonight. (The Bengals defense has earned the Bungles nickname)

    Aaron Rodgers
“They need to get on board now, or keep their mouth’s shut.”

  • JeffN

If you guys are still emotional you need to see a counselor. To those that can’t get over it please go talk to your shrink instead of venting on these forums so the rest of us can talk football.

  • Jon

“This will also be determined by how #4 does for the Jets”.

The Jets were 4-12 last year, not 13-3. No sane person expects Favre to perform the same in New York as he would have in Green Bay.

“I refuse to publicly criticize my team, it’s PLAYERS, coaches, or management”.

Then what are you doing on this site? Al has done little else than criticise a certain PLAYER.

  • Jon

    Jeff,

We ARE talking football. In fact there is not one post here about anything other than football. If you don’t like the football discussion, go beat it.

  • Reid

    Jon,

Have another Red Bull, your mom should be home soon to change you. You might not recognize her though because I shaved her back.

  • Roy Jamison

I am not the biggest TT fan, but I respect what he has done and what he is. He is a football man. He has all the credentials for detecting the machinery that works best for a football team and the parts he needs to order. He is a complete technician who tirelessly works to finish the product. Of course, he might have spent a couple bucks on becoming polished at public relations, but I don’t think TT wants to spend time on that. He didn’t take the easy way out. He knew he’d get a majority of the heat for the Favre mess. And he has. Even tho Lombardi’s quote about “winning is everything” might have been taken out of context, in TT’s case this is true.

  • Zach

Haha, Jon has been digging through the archives to come up with trollisms. Get a life dude. Get out of the basement and get some sun…the lack of real life interaction is very evident in your posts. You really need to find yourself some friends and start having non-e fun. Life is so much better when people actually like you. Try it, I dare ya.

  • Larry

Now, Jon, you cant have it both ways. One could interpret your last post as Favre only took us deep into the playoffs twice, thereby it follows he was an utter failure.

  • JeffN

Wow I put a post out there talking to everyone in general saying some people need counseling to get over their Favre issue not mentioning any names.

Jon responds to it acknowledging the fact that he needs help. Funny stuff.

And no Jon you are not talking football.. you are venting about your emotional issues about Favre. Which is why you use all the name calling. You really have some growing up to do.

  • matt

    Jon,

That certain player is a New York Jet now. See Jet’s forum ->

    Well,
The Enhanced fan behavior code is in effect tonight (Thanks Ted!! I wonder why?). So those of you who worship TT be on your best behavior. Realize, many of us are not worshipping on that alter, and may not agree with you on what a genius TT is. So don’t get upset tonight if you hear someone say they don’t respect Packer management. Everyone has a right to their opinion, as much as ” TRUE” Packer fans don’t like that. To all Packer fans be respectful to everyone, yet don’t be afraid to express your opinion.

    Go Pack

  • Larry

What he hell is this “worship” crap? The guy is a GM for God’s sake. We’ve had a lot of ‘em and we’ll have a lot more. Get back to football…….

  • Michael Legat

Oconomowockid, you express your opinion well, and though I do disagree, it is respected.

  • Zach

the enhanced fan behavior code is in effect for people like jon who will totally disrespect the packers, use foul language, and express their love for Favre (or hatred for the teams current QB.) If losers at the practice field and at the family night would not have been disrespectful and immature, the enhanced code would not have to be implemented. Thanks for making a mockery of Green Bay, anti TT and AR people. I heard the Jets tickets are easy to get. Go to one of their games.

    GO PACK GO!!!!

  • Michael Legat

Also, this enhanced fan behavior code is a league-wide initiative – has nothing to Thompson, Favre, Rodgers, etc.

  • CheesyD

Another anti-Thompson conspiracy squashed like a bug.

    Good job, Michael!

I’ll be wearing my Rodgers jersey tonight, watching the game in my living room after work. Hopefully the crowd acts like Packer fans and not Viking fans tonight.

    GO PACK!!

  • jeffn

Opinions are respected but obnoxious behavior is not respected. I’m not going to respect Jon’s 20 or more posts (too many) all of which are trying to belittle other people. I’m not going to respect Lew’s foul language and name calling throughout the blogs on this site. I have no respect for disruptive behavior.

I will respect people with well thought out intelligent opinions even if I disagree.

If you have issues or see that you are making more enemies than friends on this site then check yourself into Bellin Mental Health and Psychiatric Facility instead of blowing off your steam here.

And I do agree with Larry just because people who are giving TT a chance does not mean they worship him.

  • Steve

    9/15 1 TD 1 Pick

    Not exactly stellar numbers

  • Michael Legat

Give me a break, Steve. Don’t be that guy.

  • Oconomowockid

Aaron looked good. He looked in command of the offense and very comfortable. I don’t think the Bengals are that good of a team but that takes nothing away from his perfomance. Jones made a fantastic catch and run. The interior of our D line concerns me but that should get better as we get players back. If Aaron continue to improve and the receivers continue with their great after the catch performance things look very positive for the offense.

  • jeffn

9/15 but a lot of those incomplete passes were drops. Including the interception bounced off the WRs chest. Rodgers played good. WRs need to hang onto the ball.

  • CheesyD

You can’t be serious, Steve. Sheesh. Rodgers was great tonight! The INT clearly was not his fault… it hit the WR right between the numbers. Driver dropped a sure thing also.

Rodgers had excellent zip on the ball and was very accurate with his throws. Anyone with any objectivity at all cannot fault the play of Rodgers tonight.

The fans at Lambeau were awesome. The Rodgers era is here. Get on board or hightail it to Minneapolis.

The defense did not impress me in the slightest, outside of Barnett.

  • Steve

You know what CheesyD.. If I hear one more person on this board say “head to Minneapolis” I’m gonna get even more pissed off…. I can react any way I want to the performance of Rodgers… just as you can…

And as far as being a true fan… I dive 10+ hours a game to see 3 games a year in GB… and am forced to pay 6 times the price on the ticket because the pack has allowed a huge number of tickets to go to people who don’t even go to the game… So don’t anyone on here tell me to “not be that guy”.

I have been a fan since I was about 5 years old. I’ve been through good and bad with the Pack. The biggest reason I have been a fan is that I feel that they are different than most teams in the NFL, that it was more than about W’s, but after this whole Favre deal, I don’t think it is anymore.

    Steve

  • Jeff

“The fans at Lambeau were awesome. The Rodgers era is here. Get on board or hightail it to Minneapolis.”

I’m glad the Packer fans responded the way they did, but this line and its endless repetitions and permutations is just pissing me off.

Get it straight – I DISAGREE WITH A PERSONNEL MOVE MADE BY THE GM. THIS DOES NOT INVALIDATE MY FAN CARD.

Thank you for reminding me why I need to just go watch the games and get away from all this e-fan BS.

  • CheesyD

Discrediting the performance of Rodgers just because Favre is no longer here is childish. The behavior of some Packer fans remind of what I expect to see in Viking fans. Hence the wording in my post.

You have the right to react any way you want to.

And I call ‘em like I see ‘em.

  • Michael Legat

    Steve,

    Don’t be that guy.

  • Steve

    Michael,

    YOU… r that guy.

  • Michael Legat

Whatever, dude. Look if you want to pick apart Rodgers’ performance, you’re going to have plenty of opportunities when he actually does have a bad performance. You are entitled to your opinion, but if you’re just going to provide a pithy on-liner about last night’s statline and say “Not exactly stellar numbers” then, frankly, you are a jerkoff, and you belong on the foxsports.com message boards instead.

  • matt

    Steve,

I can understand your comment if you didn’t watch the game and only saw the stats. However, if you did watch the game, your comment is ridiculous and is worthy of ridicule. It also makes you seem desperate. CheesyD and Michael have summed up the rest.

If you can’t deal with anyone at qb besides Favre, then maybe you should take the season off and go fishing or something. Or maybe you should get on the next bus to Minneapolis, or New Jersey …

  • Jeff

And if calling them like you see ‘em means spitting in the faces of fans who merely disagree with a management decision, that’s just the way it rolls, eh? “Packer fans” indeed.

I had more civil relations with the Bear fans when I lived in Chicago. If I had a blasted brain in my head, I wouldn’t post this – wouldn’t bother to return. Clearly I’m just a brain-dead reactionary.

But I like talking football, and I’m hoping we can get back to that instead of debating who is and is not a “real” fan.

To that end – I thought Rodgers played well last night. Aside from the interception, he played as well as Carson Palmer. If that’s what he looks like when he’s all jacked up, I like our chances as long as he can stay healthy. Jackson had some good runs. Driver made up for his drop and showed some balls. I’m a little worried about the o-line which allowed too much penetration to a merely OK Cincy Dline. TE is a concern. DT of course. Backup QB? I honestly thought Flynn looked better than Brohm, but it looks to me like his arm strength needs work.

Good news – Carson Palmer was unable to completely shred our backup cornerbacks – a serious plus. I figured he would just roll.

  • Michael Legat

    Jeff,

I’ll be the first to apologize if you are feeling ganged up on. I can only speak for myself when I say that I completely understand yours and others’ frustration with the offseason and, let’s face it, criticism keeps this site more interesting. I think that when the criticism turns asinine (which doesn’t apply to you), folks here get a little testy.

  • Jeff

It’s one thing to get into a spirited conversation with an individual. That I understand – it’s quite another to plaster an entire swath of Packer fans with nasty epithets. I don’t accuse one side over the other. Those who supported Favre smeared folks as drinkers of management kool-aid and worshippers of Ted. Those who backed the management’s view of things made equivilent statements.

It’s gotten to a point where I walk away from Packer discussions at work, and that’s a bigger problem. I’m not simply pointing out posters here; I’m trying to suggest that this foolishness is actually destructive to the fan base. I am not a “Packer fan”. I am a Packer fan, and intimations to the contrary such as those made by CheesyD – though not directed personally at me – truly reduce the joy that being a Packer fan has always brought me. I know this will all eventually fade away; it’s just passingly frustrating.

Take it for what it’s worth, I suppose, but I’d be very happy to keep talking football.

  • CheesyD

“And if calling them like you see ‘em means spitting in the faces of fans who merely disagree with a management decision, that’s just the way it rolls, eh?”

I did not “spit” on anyone who “merely disagreed” with management. Disagree with the trade all you want. I couldn’t care less. My problem is with those who attack Thompson, Murphy, McCarthy, and Rodgers on a personal level for simply doing their jobs. The attacks against Rodgers are particularly annoying as he had absolutely no control over any of it. I also take issue with those who attack those of us who did not support Favre in the way has acted the past couple of months. Those are behaviors I would expect from lesser fans, such as those of the Vikings. Those in that category know who they are.

If you feel defensive about that, then that would be your problem, not mine.
