Brutal homecoming for Rodgers

Playing behind a makeshift offensive line in front of his home crowd, Aaron Rodgers looked every bit the young inexperienced quarterback he is. It wasn’t all Rodgers fault, although he held the ball too long on three of his four sacks and seemed uncertain where to go with the ball at other times, his receivers are having a hard time catching the ball this year. For the second straight game Donald Driver dropped a perfectly thrown ball that hit him right in the hands, this one had six points written all over it. Not to be outdone, tight end Donald Lee dropped a perfectly thrown pass in the end zone after a Charles Woodson interception set up the Packers at the 49ers’ seven. Two plays that could have changed the game.

For the second straight week the Packers running games was a non-factor and on the other side of the ball the defense played well for a quarter but the second the backups come in the flood gates opened for the 49ers. The secondary and defensive line have to be areas of concern due to lack of depth, but nothing like the problems the offensive line faces. If head coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson can’t shore up that unit or find the right combination, it will be a long season for the Packers. I mean really, where is Jason Spitz going to start next week? Running back? Tight end? This is getting ridiculous. Darren Colledge couldn’t block my grandmother.

If the Packers wanted a wake-up call, they got it. The offensive line is horrible, the backup quarterbacks suck and the receivers can’t catch. Seems like the Packers miss Greg Jennings and Ryan Grant more and more each week. Getting those two back will help, but without an offensive line, it won’t be enough.

It is only preseason and by no means is it time to panic. Two more games to work out the kinks. Back to the drawing board after a lesson learned. This is what preseason is for, and judging from the tone of McCarthy’s voice last night, this all-around poor performance will be addressed. However, the Packers will be playing their third game in 13 games on Friday, so unlike most third preseason games, I don’t see this one as being the usual dress rehearsal for the regular season. Any nicked up starters will likely sit out again. I do expect Rodgers to play into the third quarter, however. That is if he isn’t maimed in the first half.

More to come…

  • Jon

“For the second straight week the Packers running games was a non-factor”

You mean THIRD straight week: 28 yards rushing in the NFC Championship game.

  • paul

The Packers miss Jennings and Grant? They miss Brett effen Favre!!! Only six practices with the Jets and he ran the offense extremely well. I know it is only pre-season but my 4-12 prediction stands. Also, I am really disappointed no one would take me up on my bet that the Pack do not better .500. I guess you all know that I am right.

  • He Who Is Right

Hope McCarthy cleans up the “pad level” and his inability to call run plays and the Packers can find the “best five” for the O-line (Are the “best five” even on the roster? Maybe Philbin should call Al’s grandma.).

  • Tom

WOW !! They went in and stunk it up so bad that wall paper is pealing all over packer nation. The need an offensive line and some depth on defense. Come on this is the third year that this is a concern.

  • Jack in Columbus

Relax everybody. It’s preseason — experimentation time with a fair number of subs replacing dinged up veterans. Plus, the Packers are not game planning for their opponents or opening up their playbook. Of course there are concerns when players to do not throw, catch, cover, run, block or tackle the way they are supposed to. But let’s not overdo it. Things are never as good or bad as they seem, especially in the preseason. This week, the team will focus on third down. Moving the sticks on O and getting off the field on D. I, for one, look forward to seeing improved play and have confidence that the team will deliver a better performance.

  • Jeff

I’m not gonna freak over it, but let’s be honest. When both teams were playing their #1 teams, our O-line and D-line did not look good, and this wasn’t exactly a championship caliber team we were facing. We made JT O’Sullivan look pretty good.

  • http://Orlando Mark

The best thing about the NFL is we get to see the results on the field, no excuses, no spin. All the Ari Fleisher’s wont give us a single point. The team was too concerned about a good showing against Cincy and relaxed. With a short week and pressing we probably wont do well Friday, but it’s a long season. The Vikes are coming to town and we better be ready.

  • He Who Is Right

After that Bloody Mary w/chaser, I’m very relaxed and do realize it’s preseason. I am, two, looking forward to improved play, but nothing I’ve seen so far has given me the feeling I can do so confidantly.

After waking and baking blueberry muffins and watching the game again, I’m left with little to cheer for other than Nelson’s return potential. The FUNdamentals gave me nothing to cheer for.

I believe it was Max McGhee (RIP) that made the comment about the shoulder-throw tackle, the one Bigby seeks in order to make the highlight film….never mind wrapping-up and bringing to the ground.

I think I’m finally glad Favre was begone-d. His presence masked, or made palatable, basic deficiencies in other areas of the team. Who cared, really, if J Bush gave up the lead, if Favre could get it back in one throw? No running game? No problem, we’ve got Brett.

From what the Packers told me, McCarthy’s “system” is predicated on strong, score-stifling defense and steady, game-managing offence. Individual players be damned, whomever the roster provides can be plugged in where they’re needed.

Yet Rodgers is apologizing for his lack of play-making. Which bus did he get on? He’s not expected, or wanted, to make big plays. His role is to NOT eff up, duh! The Packers enjoyed the financial ride Favre gave them, but decided that steadiness in the QB position is what could get them another Lombardi in the basement.

So, Rodgers, shut up and take the sack, throw the ball out of bounds, and dink and dunk and hand off your way to a paycheck. Get those gunslinger notions out yer head!

  • matt

    I’m not looking back…

  • He Who Is Right

matt, if you look back, you’re not moving on…ever.

  • Dra

Rogers is very consistent! In his last 3 games he played well in a loss to the Cowboys, played a solid game in a loss to the Bengals and now he looked ridiculous in a loss to the 49″ers. Rogers is consistent! He a loser! Just wait to the end of the season and count the losses yourself.

  • CheesyD

Very insightful post, Dra. I’m shocked you are not analyzing for ESPN. Shocked I tell you. That “He a loser!” line is an instant classic. Amazing stuff.

By the way, it’s Rodgers, not Rogers.

  • TRIP

Well, I wish RoDgers well. But I sure miss my ex-QB.

Not trying to hold on to the past, I just do. :’(

  • AllAboutThePack

I love these posts – preseason is the time to make mistakes, the time to throw a game or two by staying vanilla, the time to drop a few passes in the end zone, take a few sacks, throw your quarterback under the bus (or buses depending on how many people sack him at once). BF, BF, BF – those who have drank the BF cool aid really believe he could be the preseason savior. If you are putting that much stock in the preseason then you are ignorant. The last time the Cowgirls went to the SB (and won) they lost all four of their preseason games in glorious fashion – they looked like a bunch of third graders and the fans were looking for heads on a stake. Course, most of them don’t remember that cause the season ended the way it did.

We may not be any better then a .500 team this year, but most of these players aren’t going anywhere. Do I like waiting for a Championship? Of course not, but I’m also a realist – BF is not the answer to this team’s problems – not long term. It could be managment and the fact that they think having a large pocketbook is the answer to a winning team instead of the big name acquisitions, could be the coaching (nah, I think McCarthy is a pretty solid guy), could be TT picked the wrong guy to lead this team in A-Rod, but non of this will be answered until the completion of the season. So speculate all you like, but there WILL be big changes at the end of this season, you can bank on it. For now, speculation is a waste of time and energy. But this sure is a great place to let out our frustrations and vent a little isn’t it?

Regardless of what happens – and FYI, I still cheered my team through the 70′s and 80′s dry spells just like the rest of you – 4-12 or 12-4 or anywhere in between I say GO PACK!! We’ll get it figured out as fans and as a team – we’re just not spoiled anymore, that’s all…

  • Larry

AATP your right, this year will be all about solidifying new starters and finding out with all the 2/3 year guys the depth. Then we plug the gaps after we find out where they are. The foundation has been laid for long term….

  • CheesyD

Well stated, AATP. I remember finally winning a division title in ’95 after going without for 23 straight years. Those were lean times indeed, but it made that division crown in 1995 oh so sweet. Today’s Packer fans are indeed spoiled. But with the talent we have on today’s team expectations should be high. Would they be even higher if Favre were still the QB? Not in my opinion, but that probably puts me in the minority here. That’s fine with me. I still think Rodgers is the man to lead this team for years to come. Only time will prove me right or wrong.

    GO PACK!!

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

I still think the offensive line is the biggest problem. Even worse, the bigger problem might be trying to fix the offensive line at this late stage of training camp. One thing former GM Ron Wolf was always big on was drafting o-lineman whether you need them or not. “Without five of them you can’t play” he always said. Apparently that is one area that Wolf’s protege failed to grasp. Aaron Rodgers won’t bring current GM Ted Thompson down, but the offensive line might.

  • AllAboutThePack

Admin – well stated… After yesterday’s inability to keep Aaron off his back I was starting to wonder if they have any of the guys they need to create a cohesive group. Now, Aaron was slow getting rid of the ball a few times and the pocket collapsed completely, Aaron needs to throw the ball downfield out of bounds when he has that kind of time to sit back there and over think. I think the defense did everything it could to give the offense a chance to score, but that O-Line just kept getting overpowered on the run and the pass.

I believe I may have drank the same kool-aid as you CheesyD as I really like AR. Realistically, two drops cost us two touchdowns. He did put the ball where it needed to be but the guys just weren’t holding on to the easy ones. So the problems with our offense don’t start with Aaron alone. The team needs to pick it up a little and start using these preseason games to prove they can catch, block, run, defend and such. The O-Line, to me, is the biggest question mark on this team right now as well as our depth on the D-Line and in the secondary. This based on what I saw today watching the game on NFL Network. Hopefully the waiver wire will have some small gems available for TT to make a move on – it’s obvious we need the depth…

  • matt

Clifton LT, Barbe LG, Wells C, Sitton RG, Tausher RT. Colledge reserve LT, Giacomini reserve RT, Spitz reserve G/C. Cut Moll.

  • Roy Jamison

Maybe the waiver wire will have a quality starting quarterback. As Dick Enberg would say, “Oh, My!!!!”

  • Jon

We had a quality starting quarterback. But he wasn’t Ted’s boy. And that’s the bottom line.

  • Jon

    “the backup quarterbacks suck”

    All the quarterbacks suck.

    “the receivers can’t catch”

They – like the rest of the team – are just going through the motions collecting a paycheck. That’s what happens when you rip their hearts out by trading their only chance to go deep in the playoffs. Reap what you sow.

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

    LOL

  • http://Orlando Mark

Jon, I’m just as angry with TT as you are. But it’s over with. If it doesn’t work we’ll know soon enough. Meantime I’m a Packer fan and want what they’re doing to work. I don’t think the negativity helps. The coach and players deserve our support. The Farve haters blame him for the playoff loss even though Brady, Romo, and Garcia didn’t even do as good as he did (with the youngest team in the NFL, including the coach). Forget them.

  • AllAboutThePack

Looks like Jon needs a hug or something cause I think TT and rest of Packers management ripped HIS heart out…

It’s really time to move on dude, dontcha think? It just appears that you completely hate the Packers altogether – probably not true, but that’s what I’m reading from your posts.

You sure you’re not some kind of Packer Fan Assassin or something sent here by the Jets to divide Packer nation?

Just checkin’ cause you really seem terribly pissed out here about something that’s not going to change – maybe when the season’s over, you’ll get your wish, but for now, dontcha think it’s time to just back your team? Besides, I don’t think the receivers would have done any better regardless of who’s at QB. Another point to make about BF – the Jets appear to have a lot better OL then we do at the moment so he’s bound to look better when he has time to throw the ball. Our OL leaks like a siv (sp?). Hard for any QB to look decent with that kinda pressure – BF included dude. Not baggin’ on the man cause I really hope he has a stellar season as a Jet, it’s good for him and good for the GBP, but I’m not sorry he’s gone. I’ll watch him play and give him a cheer when something good happens, but my loyalties lie with the Pack.

  • Jon

    Mark,

I agree with you. I’m just responding to the Packers fans who are shocked at how bad we looked against San Francisco. I’m pointing out it’s really not that shocking. This is the same team (less one important player) that ended last season with 28 yards rushing, at home, in a title game, in running conditions, and whose defense in that game – especially the secondary – got shredded. Maybe we really had no business being in that game in the first place, and simply over achieved last year. I think we may have. If I’m right, we’re in for a long haul, because the guy largely responsible for us over achieving last year is now wearing green and white.

  • cali cheeez

Can we please keep the emotionally charged negative childish name calling and temper tantrums on this site to a minimal. I’ve had enough of the childish 3rd grade antics on other blogs. I know for all of us Packer fans the BF situation was very emotional and we all have our own opinions about it but it’s over and done. If you want to root for the Jets, than go. Last year it was, “no Randy Moss, 4-12 mark my words”, gimmie a freekin’ break. None of us knows or can read the future, how many of you made millions of dollars betting a 6th round draft pick rookie qb would take the Pats to a SB victory, that’s what I thought. That being said, I was at the game last night, 50,000 fans at a stadium that holds about 70,000. I guesstimate about 20,000+ PACKER FANS. It was rough but I know it’s just preseason. The SF fans, the most bandwagon fans on earth, thought they had just won the SB. Packer fans were tailgateing, chanting, partying, just carrying on Packer Pride and tradition, brats and beers. Look, the preseason is for ironing things out and getting expirence for everyone. Are we going to run the 2-4-5 defence on the cowgirls without trying it out first? Was I happy with the play of the OL, heck no, did I enjoy Bush getting schooled all over the place, sheeeeeit. Now we know why they’re trying him out at safety. Last year we started slow but we got it together as we went on to 13-3. I think it was last year the raiders went 4-0 in preseason and they sucked the rest of the year. We have the youngest team in the league and a very promising future. One thing is for sure, there woun’t be 20,000 SF fans coming to invade Lambeau Field like Packer fans do other venues. GO PACK GO

  • Matt Hayton

    Hey AllAbout…
the O-Line is the same one that Favre and the Pack went 13-3 behind last year. And apparently they “upgraded” over Colledge by adding Sitton. Only variable here is Rodgers…we’ll just see, it is only pre-season. The sky isn’t falling for me, yet…but it might be shakin’ loose…

  • TRIP

Jon, 13-3 was not an overachievement. We lost to the World Champions, #1 seed in the NFC and our hated rivals. That’s it. I could give you some real arguments for that, but I don’t think its too important.

AATP, it is hard for any QB to look good behind a sorry O-line, BF included. However, my only concern is, if this keeps up, will A-Rod withstand those sacks. We know BF could. I just pray that week 3 doesn’t roll around, A-Rod gets knocked out and Brian Brohm is our QB. LOL! That’s such a bad scenario at this point, its funny. But it’s not farfetched if the O-Line keeps this up.

  • AllAboutThePack

Yeah TRIP, you ain’t kidding… That scenario is definitely not a laughing matter at all. So far A-Rod has been holding up pretty well, but like you said, once the machine is turned on full speed we’ll just see what kinda punishment he can take if the OL doesn’t wake up and start playing with some conviction. If AR goes out, it’ll be a long season for sure – there is good news in all of this though – the Bears and Viqueens still suck!!!

  • TRIP

That’s the comfort I was looking for! :)

  • Larry

“PAD LEVEL”? 2 yrs Flag Football, 2 yrs Pop Warner, 4 yrs high school, 3-4 yrs college, and 2-3 yrs in the pros and they’re talking “pad level”? What were the coaches doing during the game; talking about where they were going to have dinner after the game? I’m a little embarrased down here in Texas.

  • Jon

    Trip,

If last year’s 13-3 team goes 8-8 this year, then 13-3 was an over achievement . . . due largely to the guy wearing green and white this year.

  • Reid

It’s kind of funny how it’s preseason practice (er, a game) when the team looks good but all hell is breaking loose, last year was an overachievement, and everyone left in GB is an idiot when they don’t win a preseason game (er, practice).

  • Jon

It’s kind of funny how when one quarterback misses it’s his fault, but when another quarterback misses it’s the receivers dropping balls.

  • matt

    Jon,

That isn’t necessarily true. No one player makes the team. If we win less games, it is because the team didn’t play as well, or the schedule is harder, or any number of reasons. Each season is distinct and stands by itself. Last year was last year, and this year is this year.

  • http://Orlando Mark

I agree with Matt. It was more important to have #4 last year when the team was younger. There are no excuses now. It is only preseason and these games mean nothing. When the season starts I don’t want to hear about how #4 isn’t here to bail us out. Rodgers is quite capable, and so is the rest of the team. It’s going to be harder this year but just as sweet when we win.

  • Dan

    I’m concerned with the offense.

We lit up the Bungles who were the 27th ranked defense in 2007. This year, they have a new defensive coordinator, so their defense should struggle for at least a few games into the season.

The 49ers were the 25th ranked defense and made our offense look terrible. Admittedly, Driver and Lee didn’t help things. Then again, we’ve dealt with WR/TEs dropping passes for years. (Just look at Bubba’s dropped TDs over the years).

Thank goodness it’s the preseason. Get it fixed quickly or when we play a top 15 defense, we’ll really be in trouble. Or worse when we play a top 5 defenses like the Bucs and Colts.

With the talent we have on offense, there’s no excuses. With Woodson, Harris, Pickett, Tauscher, and Clifton all getting older the team can’t afford to wait 2-3 years to get back to last year’s offensive production.

  • JeffN

Holding onto the ball too long a few times are mistakes we can expect Rodgers to make this year. Other than that he did pretty well with what he had to work with. The O-line is the biggest issue right now that needs to be shored up. I expect to see improvements in the O-line before the start of the season. Jennings and Grant will be back in the line up soon enough and that will get things rolling.

They will get it together before the start of the regular season. The Packers offense looked pretty ugly during the preseason last year to and they went on to be awesome during the regular season last year.

  • TRIP

Jon, I disagree with some of the guys disagreeing with you, lol. Last year was not an overachievement and this team stands alone. You CAN point towards Favre because Favre carried the team to a 6-1 start with hardly NO help from the running game, the pre-Grant stint. He had a great season, the O-Line was stable, Grant ran well, starting in week 8 or so. ANY TEAM IN THE NFL, can easily drop 4-5 games with a new, inexperienced QB, no matter how good his prospects.

In 1991, Steve Young inherited a 14-2 team, he got hurt and amazingly his backup led the team on a 5-game winning streak, the team still ended up 10-6. And my fellow Packers, I don’t think we have that backup, yet. A part of the prestige of Favre is, you get him for 16 games. We can’t trust that legacy with Rodgers, so we have to brace for anything.

If an 8-8 season is an overachievement due to the guy wearing green and white, that simple means 13-3 can heavily been attributed to him, its not an overachievement. It’s just a different way of thinking about it. We just have a different team because the leadership has changed from a 16-17 year vet to a 3-year pro with no starting experience. If Favre was still with the Packers, we would all be expecting another run deep in the playoffs, point blank. But just like Steve Young, Rodgers probably will start 4-4, even though I wish he starts 8-0.

  • CheesyD

Wow.. the Patriots are 0-2 in the preseason this year.

They must really suck. They’re toast. What a bunch of losers.

    /sarcasm off

  • Jon

The purpose of preseason is not to “win” but to assess individual and group performance. And individually and as a group, GB looked like crap – regardless of the score. So your comparison to the Patriots’ preseason “record” is moronic; right in line with your other posts.

  • matt

What are you talking about? The Patriots have looked horrible. Maybe you should watch the games and stop reading the stat lines.

  • TRIP

That doesn’t surprise me, Moss did say he was nervous.

  • TRIP

One thing I like about the Favre trade is that TT and MM have to really prove they are the genuises they think they are. Don’t forget, Mike Sherman had a few winning seasons, division titles, and playoff “runs” or chances with Brett Favre as his QB. 8-8 then 13-3 is great with Favre, but I’d like to see them earn their money now.

  • CheesyD

Ah, Jon… why am I not surprised that yet another point has sailed cleanly over your head.

    You never fail to disappoint.

    ROFL!!

  • CheesyD

Side note… the Bears have named Kyle Orton as their starting QB.

  • packer_Bob

I was out of town Saturday night so I didn’t get to watch the game, but everything I’ve read today sounds like it was a disaster.

It’s not right to read much into preseason. I didn’t get overly excited when Rodgers looked pretty good in the opener so I’m not overly down now that he had a poor game.
Concerned would be the best way to describe it.

Hopefully they fix the problems from Saturday night, but I must admit my expectations for this team do not involve another NFL championship game.

  • TRIP

Thanks for making a bold prediction, Bob. LOL!

  • Jon

    SleazyD,

Au contraire. I responded precisely to your “point”. That’s why you’re pithed off.
