Packers-Broncos live blog

First impressions look good. Rodgers shines, Double-D gets the TD. So far so good.

Second impressions so-so. Defense did hold them to three, but did give up two 22-yard plays.

Packers 7, Broncos 3.

The Packers’ defense all of a sudden looks horrible. The Broncos started at the one and are at midfield now. Ugly. But 50 yards to go.

This is a horrible drive for the Packers’ defense. Nick Collins and Atari Bigby are out with injuries, Charles Woodson left with an injury but did return. But this is the Packers’ worst nightmare. Confidence is not high.

Ninety-nine yards on the Packers’ defense? And quarterback is what we are worried about? That was a punch in the mouth by Broncos to the Packers’ defense. Wow. That was very discouraging.

Does depth at cornerback worry you at all?

All in all, a great bounce back game for Aaron Rodgers. 16-of-19 for 178 yards and touchdown is pretty good.

I love McCarthy. A great non-interview interview to start the second half.

Who would have thought the quarterback sneak would ever be a part of the Packers’ offense again? I love it. No offense to the great one, but that looked pretty simple. Rodgers leaves with a 20-17 lead. 18 of 22 for 193 yards, a touchdown pass and a touchdown rushing. Not too shabby.

This was our last view of Rodgers this preseason. His next real appearance is for all the marbles. Yeah, he may take a snap or two next Thursday, but we saw what we needed to see tonight. And I like what we saw.

I’m out. Good night now.

Not looking very good. If anyone is to blame, it is the big D.

  • snyz

ok, i like using the QB sneak to keep the drive alive, but wouldn’t it be great to challenge the offense on a straight lead run on 3rd and short? colledge is a backup, looked terrible. otherwise trying not to complain.

  • CheesyD

I haven’t seen the game yet as it won’t be on the NFL channel until noon today here. But I read this and it sounds pretty good to me…

“Rodgers led four scoring drives in his five possessions and was 16-for-19 for 178 yards against the Broncos’ starters, including a 10-yard touchdown to Donald Driver on the game’s opening drive.”

  • Roy Jamison

Will the real Aaron Rodgers please stand up?

  • matt

Some thoughts regarding the Broncos game,

Chillar can’t tackle or get off blocks. Why is he playing with the starters? Bishop looked much better even if it wasn’t against the starters. He deserves an opportunity to start.

The fullbacks looked horrible. The missed several blocks and stopped moving their legs upon contact. Powdrell had one nice block.

I wouldn’t keep Morency. He is weak at the point of attack. He simply crumbles. Lumpkin looked much better and hungry. Herron was average.

The D-line played high again. They need to correct it. At this point, Harrell looks like a complete bust. I really liked him, but he has to play the next game. The fact that he hasn’t even practiced yet is alarming. If he goes on IR, he may be too far behind to ever make an impact.

The secondary is really jellying. I hope Bigby’s injury isn’t serious.

One more week guys and Jon leaves for the J-E-T-S, Mark goes to DA BEARSE, and Lew splits to the Queens. Hang in there. You know why we have not looked good in the Pre; its because we’ve played more back-ups than ever before. Remember we’ve got a lot of 2/3 year and some 4s that have had their chance to make this team. What we’ll be left with is probably better depth than ever and with the usual nicks and scrapes we will need them. If Atlanta can start a rook I can live with ‘em as back-ups.

  • Dan

I thought the o-line played their best game of the pre-season. Just felt like the o-line finally was communicating. They finally picked up stunts and late LB blitzes.

Defense looked terrible. There’s plenty of injuries, but we’ve been through them before and at least looked respectable. Line, LBs, and secondary all stunk it up.

Matt, don’t plan on Harrell being on the field anytime soon. He’s going to another doctor for a second opinion. Maybe next year he’ll step up. Harrell’s reminding me a lot of Kenny Peterson. Potential doesn’t mean squat in the NFL. Produce or we’ll give you an opportunity to seek employment elsewhere.

  • Reid

I’m looking forward to the real season so I can actually watch the games. The last 2 were not on where I live, but watching play-by-play on NFL.com Offense appeared to be energized by Jennings coming back. Maybe another notch with Grant back too?

Every GM has their major screw up 1st round pick. Harrell is headed toward that honor for TT, he was put on the PUP list today. My apologies to Ron Wolfe but he did pick Jamaal Reynolds and, for now, at least Harrell has a legitimate injury, not just because he’s not good enough to play in the NFL. Hopefully he will get healthy enough some day for us to determine if he’s NFL caliber.

  • Larry

    How true, dont forget Mandarich!

  • http://Orlando Mark

Hey Larry, don’t forget Jordy Nelson, our first pick this year. BTW I’ve been a Packer fan since I watched Lombardi’s teams ln Milwaukee. Just because I’m not a TT kiss ass doesn’t mean I don’t support the team. I actually hope he’s right and I’m not, I just don’t like the way he got rid of #4.

  • Lew

    Here, here Mark.

Larry, I go to the Queens? Not hardly- I will always cheer for the pack. Does that men that you have to agree with every decision? Of course not. Quit being an idiot. I have consistently said that I don’t care about pre season performance. I care as little about the good Rodgers this week as I did the poor rodgers the week before, i.e not at all. We will see shortly….Although at this point are D and O-line have to be just as large of concerns.

  • Larry

OK, you two, glad to have you aboard. Remember, to be admited to this club you’ve got to support the Pack regardless who the GM and Coach are. I, too, have been with ‘em since the 50s and let me tell you, that was no picnic before Lombardi.

  • Reid

I don’t understand the Jordy Nelson comment, he hasn’t even played an NFL game. He was an All-American in college with huge stats, 6’3″, 220 lbs and never hurt. Technically, he wasn’t a 1st round pick either. Please explain, unless you are just relentlessly Ted-bashing as usual, then don’t bother.

  • Jeff

I think reasonable people could disagree on the selections of both Brohm and Nelson, but I’d hardly put them in the same catagory as Mandarich, Reynolds, and now possibly Justin Harrell. We could tack Antwaan Edwards and Ahmad “Hands” Carroll onto the list if you like.

While it’s early, I have good hopes that all three of our second rounders will show us more than these first rounders did.

  • Larry

Right on Jeff about potential mistakes, however, Reid has it correct. I was given to believe that Jordy has been progressing rather well, especially on special teams.

  • Jeff

I like Jordy Nelson a lot. He has the size but also seems to have a better burst than either Jones or Martin. I’ve read that he’s very smart about his football and is a very, very hard worker. That should be a winning combination. If I was going to place a bet on either Harrell or Nelson as to who is going to have the biggest long-term impact on the team, I’d bet on Nelson without hesitation.

Brohm is a little harder to work out, but it’s hard to tell where he and Flynn might be in a couple years.

I was only suggesting that reasonable people could disagree with the Packers drafting them where they did – not that Jordy could possibly be listed as a bust or even a notable mistake at this point.

  • Reid

Good pionts guys. Maybe someone could show us a list of all of the Packer’s 1st round picks since 1990 or so?

Jeff – I respect anyone’s opinion to disagree with the pick. Saying he’s a bust when he hasn’t even played a regular season game and Mark’s getting a little overboard with the TT bashing with that one.

    That list sucks… lol

  • http://Orlando Mark

Reid, I like Nelson alot but we really need Dline help. I wanted Calais Campbell. Harrell never showed anything when healthy, we traded a good DT and KGB is slowing down. These things are not surprises. Trade, draft, free agent, something. The Vikes are coming to town and they run the ball. Our linebackers have to be active and Rouse has the speed to be starting.
