Packers lose

I’m sorry. I don’t have the energy to defend my team any longer. It is a losing battle. It is one thing to be a fan with your friends, but quite another to try to appease the masses. I can’t take the heat any longer. Thanks for keeping Packernet around this long. Jon won. I lost.

See ya…

  • zach

thanks for keeping your blog this long, al. bad day in green bay.

  • Jack in Columbus

Relax everybody. Yeah, the Packers have a lot of things to fix. Maybe they get them fixed this year. Maybe they don’t. Injuries have hurt us. And we started out thin at several key positions. McGinn’s column on the ineffectiveness of the zome blocing scheme was intersting, although the Packers seemed to run the ball a little better today. The Pack probably wo’t be in the title hunt thi syear. But with expecttations having been lowered somewhat, we can still all look forward to an intersting season, seeing this young team develop and maybe improve. Let’s not be fair weather fans, huh? Imagine how hard it must have been to be a Bears fan or Lions fan over the last 10 years. Even the Vikings have never won a Super Bowl, although I believe they have appeared in 4 (none recently). Let’s all hope ARod heals quickly, an dthe Pack figures out a way to win soon with the guys we have.

  • TRIP

I’m not going to thrash him yet, but Ted Thompson is looking a lot less of a football genius. I must be honest, I’m tempted to thrash. lol

  • paul

    Packers 24 points
    Falcons 17 points
    Refs 10 points

  • stomps

    Good grief…..

    It’s a game Al,

Are you sure your not a Vikings fan as much of a bandwagon jumper as you are?

Yes… I have a feeling those of us that are Teddie bashers are more right than you, but… it’s still the Packers…. we survived the 80′s …. we can make it through 3 losses.

    Steve

  • Larry

What’s with the Special Teams? I have been raving about them last year and the 1st couple of games this, and now I’m somewhat embarased. The injury bug shouldn’t have hurt these units because they’re not usually staffed by starters anyway. I’m down here in Texas so can’t watch the games. Please help me, explain!

  • monkeon

    The train left the station.

Its obviously become the crazy train.

So tell me…was some off season drama worth having Brett on the field on Sunday?

I am not trashing Rodgers…but Rodgers willl NEVER have the “Favre Factor”

Its that factor that got us to 13 and 3.

TT and MM need to get the players to step up!

  • Matt Hayton

    Dear Al-

I’m sad to hear that you are through…hopefully you will recover and keep Packernet alive just like you did last year after the Giants playoff game….I truly love your site…

    Moving on…

Here’s the deal folks…Let me put my finger on what our problem is–
It is actually easy football economics…A great leader makes the players around him better. You take away that player and everyone doesn’t play as well.

If you have every played a team sport, at any level with a star player, you know this to be true. Why? Because you have confidence and believe that no matter what adversity takes place, you have a chance to win the game. It’s electrifying, energizing and contagious…

Without that player, though, you revert back to being mere men…no one plays, as well, I don’t know why, it just is what it is…Special teams, Offensive, Defensive lines, etc..you just end up playing with less confidence which impacts your ability to succeed. Welcome to the next decade people.

This why the 4-12 NY Jets from last year will be 10-6 or better this year and why a 13-3 Packers team from a year ago will be 6-10. It’s just simple football economics.

    AL,
PLEASE DONT SHUT THIS WEB SITE DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT’S THE BEST….AND I LOVE READING YOUR COMMENTARIES…YOU ARE MY FAVORITE BLOGGER! BIG FAN…..DAN

As for my view of the Packer situation…here it is:
It’s real simple!!!!we can’t stop the run and we can’t run….. until this running thing is solved we wont be winning games….What I saw out on that field today was pathetic…..to let them run on us like that was sickening… and Grant….he had a couple of runs that he did well…notice he was cutting left and right on those runs….all the others he did his patent head down and run straight for 1 to 3 yards. That annoys me to no end!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If Teddy and McCarthy don’t do something fast…this season will be done. This was at Lambeau and we got it handed to us…. Dont let the score fool you…we got beat bad! I give credit to Riodgers. He showed some toughness even though he was in obvious pain….but when the center hikes the ball over your head….don’t smile…get pissed and get in his face…..that kind of crap should not happen and the leader has to let that be known! I think that McCarthy has to switch to Jackson at RB…that’s a no brainer. and they have to shake things up on defense….change their scheme…3-4 to 4-3 or whatever …just something …cause what they are doing ain’t working and with only 16 games in a season…we are running out of time….especially with the Bears winning….they took over first place in our division….and with all the good teams in the NFC this year….the only way in the playoffs will be winning the division. I have this feeling its going to be a long season and with flex games….that probably means that we wont get many game on TV this year…. I’m sorry, but this is all Teddy”s fault….I know I sound like a broken record….but his lack of getting veterans on this team is finally catching up with him…. Its too late to bring anyone in now….but they better shake up the lineup and move players around …do something! and do it fast!!!

Al pulls this routine all the time. The writing was on the wall today. It’s going to get a little worse before it gets better. Frankly, a lot of our issues are NOT long term. This team needs to get on a run at some point.

With all due respect, Mr. Hayton, I don’t think confidence has anything to do with the performance the last three weeks. I find it especially encouraging that this team has stayed competitive and focused in spite of being behind the eight ball each game. Yes, they have all been L’s, but I’ve seen fight in everyone right up until the bitter end. The breaks will come, just later in the season.

  • cali cheeez

No, it’s not a losing battle. It’s the NFL. A league where people get hurt’ and we’re a hurt’n. That’s it, sometimes you go two years with few injuries and some years you start with injuries and that’s how we started this year!
Monkeon and Matt, he quit Brett “the great leaader” quit on “his” 14-4 team. He was not pushed out he left on his own.I love Brett as much as any Packer fan…….well maybe not as much as some of you, but when your leader says he’s done, he’s done. It’s time to move on. You can think about it, wish upon it, speculate about it, debate it heck the way some people talk about it they might even masturbate about it. FOREGET ABOUT IT, HE’S GONE !
On a positive, the offence opened up some. They must have opened up a new valve cause some new stuff was a flowin’. TE s got involved, Grant ran all right with no fumbles, the offense looked better than it has looked. Aaron made some bad azz throws. defence. had NO sacks, NO SACKS.It was a tough loss but there was some positives.
Just play four quarters, that’s all. Play four consistant solid quarters…….it’s not a losing battle …. it’s the NFL…………GO PACK GO

  • http://Orlando Mark

Matt and Monkeon our problem isn’t that #4 is gone, it’s that our D-line is gone. And, Cali, Farve didn’t quit his team, he wasn’t wanted by TT, ever. He is older and expensive and frankly wouldn’t have solved our bigger problems on defense. KGB is done, Jenkins is out and were down to three useful players Jolly, Kampman and Pickett. We could have easily won the last two games with our D-line from last year. This has to be put at TT’s door. Trade, draft, free agency(we’ve got $12 million extra by dropping #4) something. It may be too late for this year, but don’t blame the wrong people, Farve, Rodgers or MM.

  • Pete H

I agree. this has absolutely nothing to do with Favre or Rodgers. Rodgers was heroic. He just threw a bad ball…like Favre did often…when it counted. I will exact some of the burden on MM. This team is not playing fundamental football. The penalties, thats coaching, especially after last year. The depth, that is all TT. What pisses me off is they were in all of these games, and with just a couple people who could play a little they may have won at least one of them. We have no depth and yet we have a billion dllars to not spend on anyone who can F@#$@$ing play! I am so sick of habing these unproven raw talents backing every single position up. The problem with those guys is that the only purpose they serve is replace someone who is good when their contract is up because they aren’t ready to play full time now. This is not being fair weather, this is not “hating” on my team. This is loving my team enough to where it pisses me off when I see unfolding exactly what I was worried about unfolding in the offseason. You can talk about injuries all you want, but losing one defensive lineman should not cripple a team the way it has. Thats bad prep. Besides, Jenkins was playing well, but its not like he was Reggie or anything. The other thing I will put on caoching is why wasn’t Woodson covering Roddy White? Michael Jenkins really? That guy has one pattern…deep. Sanders is getting schooled out there on a weekly basis.

  • Pete H

I backed Favre all offseason, but what MM said was that Brett was not able to let it go and be a Packer again, not a football player, but a Packer. I love Brett to death, and I do watch him every week, but this isn’t about him.

  • Larry

I’ve noticed a lot of TT venom regarding Favre and Williams. Well, a little early I’d say. Cleve gave up a 2(Brohm) 39m over time w/12 guaranteed. Jets had a 30-0 lead at half, score 48-28 when #4 throws his 6th TD w/ 7min. left. He should not have even been in the game at that point. Cheezy! I dont think Cleve and NTJ fans agree they pulled the wool over TT’s eyes. Face it there’s no free agent out there like Reggie (who was really responsible for our last hurrah). Further, which FA would prevent 9 penalties? MM has his work cut out for himself to turn this around, and while I’m at it who has a better GM or coaching staff out there? Jets? Cleve? Pats? How about the Titans w/ Fisher are they still unbeaten?

  • Pete H

WHat difference is that Jon? An offensive line that can block? A defensive line that ca withstand a HOFer retiring, and losing their best one? A running game? A lack of penalties?

  • Pete H

Larry, Just to set the record straight…..you don’t pull a QB just because he could have a really big day. The Cards were keeping themselves just enough in the game to warrant throwing the ball. Just look at Indy yesterday! Second, the idea that because there isn’t a Reggie in free agency we shouldn’t sign one is ridiculous!!! There isn’t a Reggie in the draft either! So why do we keep stockpiling a billion picks? I have said that I like the best player idea. I have said that I don’t mind keeping an eye on the future. This team, though, has 2 types of player..starters and guys who should be able to play in 3 years, or when the current starters contract comes up! I am not asking them to go get Reggie White, What I said was go get Steve Mcmichael, Seth Joyner, etc. Guys who can play serviceably for a couple weeks in case of those “rare” injuries. this team can sustain an injury at WR…thats it! Every other position is a train wreck if an injury happens. The whole point of TT’s off season philosophy is to provide depth and sustained competitiveness. Where is it? I do agree that this season is remarkably similar to last season. No running game, struggling with the o-line, sloppy, etc…That, again, is the point! This team should not have to do this every year! With this current philosophy this will be the case every beginning of the season.

  • Doug R

The offense scored 24 points and probably could have more if their defense could get off the field. Our problem is not at QB -it’s at d-line which as of yesterday ranked 26th in rush defense.

Atlanta came out and marched right down the field to score. The fundamental problem is their D-line. They get no pressure on the QB with their front four (even when Jenkins was there). Matt Ryan barely got touched yesterday. When Sanders does blitz, if it’s picked up, they get burned down the field. Teams are running right at them and running over their d-line. It seems like a victory when the other team only gets a field goal. Sanders needs to create some clever ways to get the blitz home. I’d rather see them give up the big play on a pass and get it over with than keep the D on the field for 8 minutes at a clip. It’s demoralizing and doesn’t give our O a chance to get into rhythm. The other option is to only rush 0 to 3 guys and put more d-backs out. What’s the use of wasting an extra guy if you can’t get pressure anyway.

With the remaining schedule, I think they will be very lucky to go 8-8 this year. This team suddenly looks and feels like the 1980′s teams.

  • Pete H

Hey Jon, I showed you 4 things that make the Giants and Packers different. Look Jon,I backed you all offseason, and I still think keeping Favre would have been the best move. I think there have been some situations where it definately made a difference, but as a whole, there are a billion more problems that this team has. Yes, Favre could help conceal some of them, but simply put, this defense is getting shredded. The Favre mess is just a microcosm the TT philosophy of having a bunch of young kids who are cheap and raw. He looks like a genius when they pan out…and these guys that are playing now might still pan out…they show flashes, but they are not ready now. TT has no emphasis at all on now. He fixes the problems of last year with a guy who’ll be ready in 2010! It can work as long as there is some transition players…..again, Mcmichael, Beebe, Ingram Robinson etc. These guys aren’t Reggie White’s, but they were critical cogs. This team has Brandon Chillar as the only guy on the bench, who when he steps on the field, has actually been there and done a little that! And for Gods sake, cut the F#$%ing punter!

  • CheesyD

Anybody who thinks Favre would have been the difference on Sunday is an idiot. The QB position was not the problem. The problem was a defense that could not stop the run, special teams who couldn’t make a tackle, a punter who can’t punt, and an O-line that cannot stop taking penalties.

Favre retired three times. The team has moved on. Too bad some of you are incapable of doing the same.

  • EastCoastPacker

If Rodgers was the biggest problem the Pack has, we’d be 4-1.

The problem w/ GB is that they sat on $$$ and did not improve the team. TT trades a starting DT and drafts a QB, and does not fill the spot with a FA. He’s counting on Harrell, Jolly and Cole. All question marks.

Without a very good DL, the linebackers are average at best. It would be nice to be able to get to the QB, other than shaking his hand after the game. The D is giving up almost 200 yards a game on the ground, pathetic. Bob Sanders is clueless!

Does Ted personally get to keep the cap money he doesn’t spend?

Next, the OL is a disaster. I’m not sure how Favre was only sacked 13 times last year.

Special teams are not very special, the punter TT and Mike Stock had to have, stinks!

Maybe MM is not the coach we thought he was. 3 weeks in a row the team looks unprepared, the last 2 weeks against very beatable teams. 8-8 would be a miracle this year.

  • Pete H

Don’t let him get your goat CheesyD. Look Jon, don’ts say facts when it is fact … singular. For you to think that that is the one difference between the teams is assenine. I agreed with you on most things this offseason about Brett, but for you to just show up after some losses, and try to make a reference that it is all Brett is also assenine. If Rodgers had been awful, you would have some validity, but he has been every bit as good as Brett was last year…to this point. As you say look at the stats…they don’t lie. If having to mention Favre’s name as much as possible is how you get off then thats fine, go ahead, pleasure yourself all you want, but you will eventually run out of people who will answer you. It really gets boring after a while. The more you blab on and on about Favre and only Favre as the SOLE reason for this teams struggles the more you show a simple lack of basic knowledge of football, which is a shame, because you have a lot to say, and I agreed with you on some of it, but now you are just embarrassing yourself. Too bad..

  • Bob

One thing that worked last year with a crappy o-line, was that Favre would roll out a lot, Rogers feels pressure and steps right in to the sack, Rogers moved well the 1st two games, I thought it was a shoulder injury not leg, The difference that I see between Favre and Rogers is that Favre would do anything it took to win games, no matter how bad he looked, Rogers is trying to be to perfect. The one thing that I been waiting top see on this board but haven’t is that The Packers have a divided locker room over the Favre plot. And if that is so we are in a lot of trouble for years. I predicted this would hurt future free agents(If TT would ever try to get any) of wanting to play here, While Teddy has done some good, His ego is going to destroy the Pack for a long time. And for all you Favre bashes wake up! Why was it that TT AND MM were begging him to come back for years, but not this year? Answer Because Rogers wasn’t ready in thier minds until now. So other words they used Favre our legend. Put yourself in Favre’s spot, and you would feel crapped on too! This whole thing is not about just the Qb Spot we now have truley seen how many holes we have to fill. By the way TT sign me for the punter job I will take the money and do just as bad!!!!!

  • AllAboutThePack

Jon, boy, when you’re right you’re right… We could be 5-0 right now with Favre at the helm and with a sloppy offensive line, a defense that looks like swiss cheese, a punter with a rubber leg and a starting running back that wears blinders most of the time. He might have been able to score one more touchdown to give us a couple extra wins but then we’d be right where we were last year, we’d have a bunch of wins that we could tag on Mr. Favre’s back but no Superbowl cause this team just isn’t good enough with all the problems we have right now. I really don’t think #4 could fix the problems we have right now. So with that in mind, facts really don’t speak for themselves. The facts are – we’re decimated in our starting lineups and it’s showing. Unless Favre were the GM of the Packers and made different decisions then TT did, he’s basically useless to this team. AR is a good quarterback, needs to be a better leader (sometimes leading by example isn’t ALL that needs to be done). Playing hurt showed the team he has some brass hangies, but it doesn’t make him a veteran leader of this team. He’ll get it, it’ll take a little time, but he’ll get it.

I think fundamental football has been thrown out the window and I think MM is doing all he can with a lineup that TT gave him to work with. They look great one moment and then they look like crap the next, that’s the inconsistency that comes with the immaturity of this team. Hopefully these fill-ins will mature quickly over the next few weeks before it really IS too late.

  • http://Orlando Mark

People want to compare the Giants to us. Their d-line has 11 sacks ours has 4 by Kampman period. Even Tolefson a guy we dumped has a sack for the Gmen. If our line had 11 sacks we’d be 5-0.

  • AllAboutThePack

Bob, I really don’t think the locker room is divided anymore – I think in the beginning the media made a bigger deal out of that than it really was. There were players that understood Favre’s take on what happened, but that doesn’t equate to a divided team. I think the team has really rallied around the new QB as a whole. The mistakes have nothing to do with AR. That has everything to do, in my opinion, with the maturity of this team. Being the youngest team in the NFL is not always a good thing and when you have as many injuries as this team does, the immaturity stands out. We have the MOST false starts on our offensive line of any team in the NFL, that’s not on AR, that’s the maturity of the OL. I think they said we have 15 in all and 10 of those were by the young guys like Colledge and Barbre, guys that were fill ins last year or were rotated in. How many good plays were averted by OL penalties. AR has done a great job only to have a first down or touchdown called back because of an immature play by the OL. That has nothing to do with the locker room and everything to do with immature mental mistakes by the youngest team in the NFL.

  • AllAboutThePack

MM will get this young team on course at some point, hopefully sooner then later. It will come around and IF TT is around for next year, maybe he’ll see some of the squandering he’s done by trying to be a penny pincher and either sign a few veteran backups or a couple big name starters for the DL and OL – how ’bout a decent punter to with that as well?

  • Matt Hayton

Mark, cali cheez and Mr. Legat,

My point isn’t that Favre isn’t a solve all, heal all. He certainly wouldn’t have played Defensive line. My point though is that everyone plays better with a known, trusted, all-pro leader. None of you addressed this point…do you agree or disagree that this team is playing worse this season with the absence of Favre? If you disagree with this point, then what else is the problem with this team? He is clearly the only difference between this team and last years!!! Someone argue this point, because I think it is rather interesting that you have an entire team that is the same as last years that started 4-0, except for 1 player…

As far as injuries on the defensive line, you all seem to forget that Cullen Jenkins was plagued injuries all year long last year and was a shell of himself, recording only 1 sack the entire year and that Ryan Pickett was out for a game or two, and that we had NO RUNNING GAME until week 8 when Grant emerged and still somehow we went 4-0 and 7-1 out of the gate! So don’t give me some BS about injuries.

So last year we had issues on the defensive line from an injury standpoint (although we had Corey Williams in the rotation, which I believe not having an effective replacement – Justin Harrell, is a large factor for our D-Line woes). Last year we couldn’t run block the entire first half of the season and had no running game, yet still, somehow, we were unbeatable, save the Bears game which MM gave away with his conservative playcalling after we jumped out to the big lead…

If it isn’t Favre, what is the difference? Someone please explain?

Furthermore, TT is an idiot…no back-up QB, no depth on the defensive line and an O-Line that sucks all falls squarely on his shoulders and drinking his own koolaid (A-Rod, won’t get injured because he is my boy. Justin Harrell is our answer for D-Line depth, it’s okay to trade away Corey Williams and not bring in Jason Taylor. Darren Colledge, Jason Spitz and Tony Moll are the answers for our O-Line because look at how well we ran the ball the 2nd half of last year…and my draft picks are the answer for everything! I’m TT, the GM of the year, I can do no wrong!!! Fire his sorry butt!!! Koolaid drinker!

  • paul

Do you guys agree with me that the refs are really bad this year? You cannot always blame the refs, but I have Direct TV superfan ticket and can watch all the games (I live in AZ via Eau Claire, WI). I have seen at least four games already that the refs have determined the outcome on really questionable calls. Yesterday, Lee did not interfere which kept Atlanta’s drive alive resulting in a touchdown, and the holding on the fieldgoal happens every play in every game. (10 points). The infraction should be completely obvious and have an inpact on the play before it is called. DAMMMIT!

  • AllAboutThePack

You’re right Matt, TT hasn’t made some of the best moves, but to blame this teams inabilities on AR is ridiculous. AR has done all he can do to put points on the board only to have them removed time and time again by stupid penalties by an immature OL. This doesn’t fall on the shoulders of AR it falls on the shoulders of MM but even more so on TT since he’s the one that left us in this state. Doing the last year to this year comparison is also preposterous, year in and year out the NFL has proven that a team, with the exact same players and the exact same coaches can come out and win, win, win and then the next year finish the season with a losing record. So you can’t use those comparisons as your benchmark for proving this team is better with one player then another. This team could have been just as bad if not worse with Favre at the helm considering the crap that went on prior to him coming to training camp. So please don’t give that crap – however, I do think TT’s got more then just koolaid in that glass, I think he may have added some Vodka to that mix. :)

  • AllAboutThePack

Paul, I agree, I have the same package and was watching the game with a couple of my neighbors who are Cowboys fans and they called it out as well. They obviously don’t want to see us win but they agreed that those were bullsh** calls and probably changed the face of the game. Course, we can’t blame it all on the refs now can we? But they are definitely adding a dimension to the game this year.

  • Jeff

Rodgers is not the problem – his lack of NFL game experience is a problem.

Anybody who thought Rodgers was going to step in and do the things Favre did was just not being realistic. Favre was (at the very least) a solid 17 year vet; he knew how to lead a team, he knew how to break down a defense, he knew how to change on the fly, he knew how to move in the pocket.

AR is a good QB – at times he looks like a very good QB, but you just can’t expect him to come in and do those things with virtually no NFL game experience. I backed Favre all the way – still do actually, and even I have to say Rodgers has played about as well as can be expected given the situation. He has frequently exceeded my expectations by a wide measure.

Yes, I am becoming an Aaron Rodgers fan.

There is NO reason for this O-line to have slipped from the point when we were a couple first downs from the Super Bowl. These same guys battled the future Super Bowl champs to a virtual standstill – they need to step up.

On a happy note – did anybody else jump up and yell when Tory Humphrey ran that seam route? Maybe we’ll finally get to see why they’ve kept him around.

  • Jon

    Pete,

First, it IS “facts” – not “fact”. The fact that the Giants kept their quarterback, and the fact that the Packers ditched their quarterback, comprise two facts. Hence “facts” is correct.

Second, the Internet is not the place to be correcting grammar or spelling. None of us are secretaries (I presume).

Third, you really shouldn’t go around pointing out perceived spelling or grammatical errors by others when you yourself write “don’ts” and “assenine.”

  • AllAboutThePack

Pete and Jon, can we play nice please? Anyway… I have to agree with the fact(s) Jon has given… The Giants kept their quarterback, but I don’t think that was ever going to be a question, the Packers did ditch theirs, but for the past few years that’s been a question over and over again. The fact that the Giants are where they are is a tribute to the strength of their team continuing to grow and not being hit with the injury bug early this season as they were early last season. Now we (Packers) get to play favorites to the injury bug. In fact, if my memory serves me, didn’t the Giants start out with a similar record and didn’t the analysts have much of the same dialog concerning that team early last season? Anyone? Anyone?

  • Larry

I guess it’s come full circle. MM and TT are idiots. The OL has no talent, the two tackles are so past their prime. The Defensive backs stink, and the DL has no courage and won’t rush. Linebackers a joke, missing tackles all over the place. Worst Special Teams in the league. The refs have been calling the games right, the players and coaches are just spoiled babies after last year. I really think I’m going to become a Jets fan because they at least have a QB thats going to be there the next 10 years.

  • Jon

    Pete,

I have never, ever said the Packers’ failures are due SOLELY to Favre’s absence. Football is a team sport.

However, when this year’s team is identical to last year’s team save for the absence of an ALL PRO at the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT POSITION IN FOOTBALL, it is delusional to claim that the All Pro’s absence has NOTHING to do with the team’s failures.

It is indeed comical to observe how so many of you who pinned the NFC Championship loss last season SOLELY on Favre are now saying that football is a TEAM sport and that our three consecutive losses cannot be pinned on Rodgers – despite his poor play in the first two losses and his game-changing interception in the third loss.

In other words, when we lost with Favre it was always his fault; when we lose with Rodgers it’s always the offensive line’s fault, the defense’s fault, the specialty teams’ fault, the guy who forgot to put mustard in McLardy’s cheeseburgers, etc.

  • AllAboutThePack

    Larry, I hope that’s just sarcasm… ;)

  • http://Orlando Mark

Matt I agree we’d be somewhat better off with #4. If nothing else we’d have great depth with #12. He was great at avoiding sacks. But our defense and special teams were better last year. You can really see the lack of coordination by our D-backs w/o Bigby and Harris, and w/o pressure from the D-line we’re in trouble either way. If we had a good running game it would help the every phase but special teams. But so far we don’t. I really expect our O-line to get better maybe even punting but I only see our D-line getting worse.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

I can only go by what I see on the field. Blocking and tackling are a big part of football and if you can’t do those things pretty well, your not likely to win alot of games. As for Favre and Williams, I don’t know what the thinking was, cause there’s so much that goes on in the locker room we don’t see. My guess is that Jolly had taken the starting spot and they didn’t want to pay starters money to a back-up (and from indications, he looked like he wanted the pro-bowl bucks). In hindsight, they didn’t know Harrell would get hurt and Jolly hasn’t batted down any passes. Farve wouldn’t make the difference right now (in my opionion), though a few more calls would go the Packer’s way w/him on the team. The pass interference call in the second quarter was another horseshit call that probably wouldn’t have been called against most teams but what are you going to do about it. MM better start making some noise!!! Maybe by game 12, Favre looks like he’s ready to go back to the warm weather in Miss. and ride his tractor, I just don’t know. Maybe Rodger’s indicated he was going to move on if he didn’t get to play pretty soon, I just don’t know. What I do see is KGB is not getting the pressure like in the past (maybe they need to bring five rushers to get one on one blocking, Jolly’s not batting down passes like in the past, Barnett has totally disappeared and when he does flash, he’s missing the tackle. I think it’s time to pull him for a game and put Hodge in there to shore up the running game. I see the LB’s bunching up and waiting to react instead of shooting through the running lanes for the tackle (if they can actually make the tackle). I can’t hardly count the number of times I’ve seen three players there to make a tackle and one blocker takes a couple of them out and the third guy can’t get around his own players to make the tackle, they’d better space themselves. 3 yard loses have been turning into 7 yard gains. I don’t know how you stop the pile pushes that the other teams have been doing so sucessfully, but if one of the defensive players has to fall to the ground to take out the legs of the blockers, they’d better start doing it. Coaching/play calling has been terrible, way too many penalties. Some of it the Packer’s fault, some ticky tacky refs….. But it’s about points and MM better start calling some slants and go’s with a pump fake. Same with the quick pass to Jennings on the left, cause the DB’s are getting up there to stop it… They’d better do more shovel passes and throw in a TE or WR screen cause the RB screen isn’t working too well. Some people believe you need to be able to line up and execute but I think the intangibles are the difference. Go to the hurry up if the offense is bogged down, work on drawing the D off-sides, strip the ball when an opportunity presents itself and put some helmets on the ball when tackling to force some fumbles. I’m still seeing d-linemen coming in unblocked, how is it DE’s are left unblocked. They need to create themselves some breaks and get things rolling again. One big game can turn the season around sometimes. If they’d get out of their own way, they might win a few games. Personally, if I were coaching, I’d be running a reverse about every 5th kick return and telling my gunners on punts to try and push the blockers into the punt returner or towards where the ball is in hopes you can get them to touch it and recover it. They need to start making some of their own breaks…. Hell, I couldn’t even tell you today whether Poppinga or Chillar started and played the most. Hawk is the only LB I’m noticing…. If they can keep things close playing as bad as they are, they’ll be fine when they figure out who to block, who to cover, tackle properly and get a few less penalties. They can’t get much more of anything right now except better. But like I’ve said, I’m sure none of the 32 coaches go to the fan sites to get ideas, so this is all for the sake of arguement on our part.

Wow, great post DA. This is more like what we want here Al.

Paraphrasing a football great…football is a simple game…blocking and tackling…neither of which the Pack have done in the past 3 games….

It’s all coming full circle now… TT, MM, and MM did nothing to improve the team through free agency and the draft was suspect at best the last 3 yeasrs. BF pleaded to improve the team. YOu mean we could’nt use Alan Faneca? ANd letting Corey Williams go? Are you kidding me? Justin Harrell is a bust at # 16. They added Frank Walker and Brandon Chillar in 2 years of Free Agency…What a joke. TT could have built a dynasty with or without BF if he “looked at the football part” of training camp/practices as stated in article by Bob McGinn JS online dated Sept 3rd, 2008. Yes he actually said that…he does however watch the interaction of the guys coming off the field…WHAT? look it up….he is a pathetic GM. And remeber if you are not getting better you are getting worse.

I’m sure I’m seeing and sensing all the same stuff as you guys…….. and like you all, I’m just as helpless to do anything about it. None of us can just pick up a phone and share our thoughts w/MM. Then again, I’m watching from the comfort of my home and have the close up shots from the TV and MM has to make it all happen amidst all the chaos of the game and sidelines…. He should make some comments about the reffing and acccept his fine. It might give the team a spark. Wait too long and the season may be over….

Actually, I’ve been losing interest in football over the years. Over the years I’ve watched as Madden set up camp in Dallas for the 3 o’clock game year in-year out (still doing it), 20 camera shots a game of the femmy Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft (some years it was hard to tell if there was actually a football game being played), taking away the defense from games (I enjoy a good defensive gane), and the introduction of the new offensive play of pass interfence (run your WR 50 yards down field and bump into the DB), not to mention allowing the O-linemen to hold, etc. They’ve made it so easy to score points that w/one penalty and a change of momentum that a team can play 50 minutes of good football and still lose.

They have repeatedly lost in the trenches.

    Two positives from yesterday’s game.
    1) McCarthy finally realized he can’t abandon the run like he did the previous two losses.
    2) Rodgers remembered that Driver is has been one of the best WRs in the NFL for the past few years. Up to this point, it’s been Jennings first, Jennings second, TE third.

The games have been lost in the trenches.
    1) When will we solve our Guard problem since Wahle and Rivera left?
    2) Our d-line isn’t taking up the blockers. As a result, our LBs aren’t free to make the tackles. TT played LB, so he should know this. When is TT going to address the problem (not trading solid players and drafting injury prone players).

The fact is that the 2008 Packers are just not that good. Many of the folks on here (me included) put what may be too much stock in the #4 v #12 debate. And while I think it is clear that we would be a better team with Favre, I think the issue is more systematic. Thompson has not put the pieces together to win and one of these poor decisions was to jettison Favre. I am sick of fans blaming injuries and/or the refs. Those excuses affect every team and are complete bogus. What Thompson supporters always claimed was that this team was a lot deeper than in the past. I even believed this last year when there was no injuries to note or evidence to support. However, it is clear that this teams backups are not close to starter material and this team is no deeper than during the Sherman years (although at least there is no cletidus hunt contract….yet). Meanwhile, Thompson continues to stockpile low draft picks so that he can cut his picks from previous years, signs no veteran free agents to backup/provide leadership, and leaves a ton of money unspent.

Honestly, who on our bench do you see as a solid starter down the road? And to add insult to injury it looks like our tackles our old and done so now we need 5 new starters on the o-line. Awesome.

I really want Sanders to go away except we all new who the new d-coordinator will be next year. Yup, Winston Moss. So get used to medicrioty boys- that is what the future has in store. McCarthy is now 27-26 and like the DJIA is falling fast.

I’ll agree to an extent that they’re losing in the trenches but I’ll also point out that execution is a good part of it also. They’ve had plays where they’ve had the ball carrier stopped and surrounded only for him to break out of it for a gain. They’ve had many plays where they’ve blocked up the running lanes in the middle only to have the RB cut back to the outside to find our DE blocked inside and the LB or safety comes up and whiffs on the tackle. Our O-line is just one guys mistake from a gain or loss/sack. One guy misses a block and they all may have as well. The O-line has proven they can play well enough to get to the championship game. The 50 million dollar question is why they can’t this year, they should have improved a little bit if anything. If the D could get off the field on 3rd down that’d help a bunch in opportunities and field position…….

So most of us sit on one of two sides of the TT/MM/AR-BF fence here…and admittedly so, my posts often look in hindsight. Please hear that I’m just pissed that we are 2-3 and without a stream of good luck we are going to be 2-5 going into the bye. FYI -That’s my motive. I’m just pissed we are losing, that’s all. And now we have to go on the road at Seattle, where I live… it is a dang hard place to win a football game. AS mentioned I live in Seattle, and they are billing this game, as the Seahawks season here. They can’t go 1-4, this is a must win game for them and Quest Field is just as loud as the metrodome (seen Packer games at both stadiums). And I’m going to the game on Sunday, too. But I have concerns we can win this football game and then Indy at home is another tough draw…

    2-5 is to be expected.

So instead of looking behind…I’m looking ahead.

Where do we go from here?

I think TT and MM, should get one more season to prove themselves…but the evaluation from all Packer fans should begin right now. They need to show some urgency ASAP!

TT make a trade right now to shore up the D-Line or O-Line…open up the pocket book this offseason.make a move in the draft next April to get a blue-chip player.

MM enough with the ridiculous vanilla play-calling. Take some risks… Start Brandon Jackson. Make a move on the O-Line…It should be balls out moves at this point.

My issue is primarily with TT, but they’ve both got to make some moves here before this house of cards crashes in on them. I feel like there is no urgency there. And that needs to change if they don’t want their heads to roll!!!

  • Devil’s Advocate…

    Lew,
Why are you still beating that dead horse. No one is complaining about the QB play. The Pack are simply a team that are their own worst enemy right now. It’s blocking, tackling, and penalties that are killing them…… They can’t get out of their own way. They’ve had two significant injuries that will cause major problems for most if not all the teams in the NFL. Do you think there’s alot of players in the NFL sitting on the bench that play as well as the starter, and if there are do you think they’re all sitting there real happy like, knowing they could be starting instead on another team? As for the Packer’s last year, most would say they over acheived. The difference is that they won’t be sneaking up on anyone this year……

At least we haven’t had to wait 100 years for a championship like those lovable losers, known as the Chicago Cubs.
