Packers not who I thought they were

If anybody wanted a true test of who the Green Bay Packers really are, it was yesterday in Lambeau Field. What I thought was a clearly inferior team, the Falcons, came into the Packers’ house and put a whopping on the them. So now one has to look the Packers and wonder how good this team really is. They did not look like the better team yesterday, especially on defense. In fact, this is without a doubt the worst defense in head coach Mike McCarthy’s three years here and since the middle of last season is one of the league’s worst defenses.

Offensively I think the Packers will fine. Ryan Grant showed some improvement Sunday and Aaron Rodgers has been excellent at quarterback. His second-half interception yesterday not withstanding. However, like the Packers of the early 80s, scoring 30 points a game doesn’t guarantee wins, like those teams I think this team is headed to 8-8 at best.

I don’t have a clue how the Packers can go about fixing the defense at this late stage. This is what training camp is for. I don’t know of any players out there that could help the Packers and nobody who has a good defensive lineman is going to trade him unless it is an offer they can’t refuse. Highly unlikely.

The Packers simply now have to go into every game knowing they need to score 50 points to ensure victory. If that means the run-and-shoot and or more gadget plays, whatever it takes. McCarthy has to adjust his coaching to his team and the Packers simply need to open up the offense early and often. Even with a sore shoulder Rodgers has proven more than up to the task, and with Grant still feeling his way back from injury, it only makes sense.

The Packers get no favors from the schedule makers, nor should they, this is the NFL, but with a trip to Seattle and then the Colts at Lambeau, two-and-five-at-the-bye has a real ring to it. Pray for the best but prepare for the worst.

Well considering that in the entire time Favre was here there was only one season under .500, I would say the answer to your second question is 1. The first question, I am not sure, but they started slow under Sherman an awful lot. Its noones team yet.

  • Matt Hayton

I’m going to the game in person this Sunday in Seattle…I’ll have a more intelligent answer on who’s team this is after Sunday…

BTW – I actually don’t think the season is lost if we lose this game. Put Favre on this team and I still think there is a good chance we lose this game. Seattle, since they’ve built there new stadium, is ridiculous at home. Very tough place to play. Most false starts by an opposing team in the last 5 years…just as loud as the metrodome…I swear they pipe in extra noise….

I think we would have gone 11-5 if Favre was the QB on this team and I would have guessed that they lose this game. If we can somehow win this game, it would be huge and I might start changing my tune about this Rodgers kid. I sure hope they can pull it out. It would put them back on track for that 9-7 season, which is my goal for this team, as stated above in my ’92 team post.

    Matt H –

I don’t envy you man – I now live in Dallas and have for about 12 years and have attended every Packer game here since the 7 field goals debacle when ol’ Jerry Jones decided to run the score up a little and pissed Reggie White off in the process (Monday Night Game). They do Packers fans no favors down here – there’s a reason for the joke “what’s the difference between Cowboys stadium and a Rose? At Cowboys stadium, all the pricks are on the inside”. But the seasons in between I made the trip to Lambeau to watch them beat the Cowboys by quite a margin – both times, not including a couple weeks ago. I think 9-7 is realistic but would hope for 10-6 or even 11-5. With the stats I posted a bit ago, seems we were 9-7 the first 3 years of the Favre generation before we ran after the Superbowl. Not that I like that idea mind you, but if we can back into a play-off spot, I wouldn’t be completely disappointed.

  • Reid

I think we would have gone 16-0 and won the Super Bowl if Chuck Norris was on the Packers and it wouldn’t matter what position he played. And, any player who tried to tackle him or one of his teammates would get roundhouse kicked in the facemask so hard that he would never play football again. Chuck Norris makes Brett Favre look like a pussy.

  • paul

Brett Favre a pussy with 250 plus starts…that’s a good one.

  • RayL

ALL about thePack – I will stand corrected! It’s TT’s team, that is definite. So I will re-phrase. Let’s see if A-Rod pulls TT’s team up or he let’s them sink in the quicksand that TT poured… the way BF “led” them to 13-3 last year. You get the drift? My argument isn’t with A-rod, it’s with TT. My point being…GB would have been a better team with BF and A-Rod and (Flynn or Brohm) than A-Rod, Flynn and Brohm(yes, this is a dead horse being beaten). The bigger point is – TT’s job is to field the best team possible. With that said he has failed miserably. The Favre saga…was just the icing on the cake. His apathy in Free agency the last 2 years is inexcuseable, and his draft choices are very suspect at best. It’s time to make some noise about it…maybe the board of directors will get the message…and fire this idiot.

  • RayL

    Reid – you’re completely lost!

Favorite Packers (that I personally saw play): Eric Torkelson; David Whitehurst; John Anderson; Jeff Querry; Paul Coffman – I once had a dog named “Tork” after the little-know RB from Connecticut! I root for the “underdogs”…

Least Favorite Packers (again, I had to see them): Jim McMahon – the sight of the punky QB wearing the green & gold made me sick; Ron Hallstrom (wasted #1 on Iowa OT); Ezra Johnson (hot dog stunt); Javon Walker (traded up to get a dumb & greedy malcontent) & Brent Fullwood (too dumb to learn basic plays).

I’m old (mid-40′s) yet familiar with internet Chuck Norris humor; are you unable to recognize a funny joke when it’s presented? Aren’t you supposedly a psychiatrist? Humor is the best medicine and all that….

  • AllAboutThePack

Reid – that was a good one… Chuck Norris rocks!! Shoot, who needs an entire team when you have Chuck Norris – he makes them ALL look pussy’s…

  • AllAboutThePack

Geez.. my grammar sucks today – I meant he makes them ALL look ‘like’ pussies…

  • Reid

IC – Thanks for actually getting the joke. Humor and reality seem to be missing from some folks’ equations. Chuck Norris has about as much of a chance of playing for our Packers as Brett Favre, but folks seem to keep pretending that “if Brett was our quarterback….” and, of course, assuming we would be a great team. Maybe we would be, maybe not, no one really knows and all we have are our opinions. Opinions are like assholes, everyone loves their own but thinks the rest stink (except Christie Brinkley’s after a good workout on the Total Gym).

By the way, a study was conducted at Mount Rushmore to possibly covert the sculpture of Grant into either Chuck Norris or Brett Favre and it was discovered that the granite wasn’t strong enough to support either of their beards.

I have faith in this GREAT organization to make an informed decision on Thompson, McCarthy, etc. at the end of the year. If it’s determined that he/they f’d up the entire Brett Favre saga and that put the organization into a downward spiral, proper action will be taken to correct it. Maybe we can hire Chuck Norris as GM, he’s always on top during sex because he never screws up.

Now, beyond door #2, we have more unrealistic thoughts….please continue.

I like your sense of humor Reid – good stuff…

  • Matt Hayton

    Hey AATP:

I added the first 6 games records to each of the Favre years:

Year W L T Pct. Finish Div. W L Pct. Title Head Coach
    1992 9 7 0 0.563 2nd NFC Central Mike Holmgren – First 6: 2-4
    1993 9 7 0 0.563 3rd NFC Central 1 1 0.5 Wild Card Mike Holmgren – First 6: 3-3
    1994 9 7 0 0.563 T2nd NFC Central 1 1 0.5 Wild Card Mike Holmgren – First 6: 3-3
    1995 11 5 0 0.688 1st NFC Central 2 1 0.667 Div Title Mike Holmgren – First 6: 4-2
    1996 13 3 0 0.813 1st NFC Central 3 0 1 Super Bowl Champ Mike Holmgren-First 6: 5-1
    1997 13 3 0 0.813 1st NFC Central 2 1 0.667 NFC Champ Mike Holmgren – First 6: 4-2
    1998 11 5 0 0.688 2nd NFC Central 0 1 0 Wild Card Mike Holmgren – First 6: 4-2
    1999 8 8 0 0.5 4th NFC Central Ray Rhodes – First 6: 4-2
    2000 9 7 0 0.563 3rd NFC Central Ray Rhodes – First 6: 2-4
    2001 12 4 0 0.75 NFC Central 1 1 0.5 Wild Card Mike Sherman – First 6: 4-2
    2002 12 4 0 0.75 1st NFC North 0 1 0 Mike Sherman – First 6: 5-1
    2003 10 6 0 0.625 1st NFC North 1 1 0.5 Mike Sherman – First 6: 3-3
    2004 10 6 0 0.625 1st NFC North 0 1 0 Mike Sherman – First 6: 2-4
    2005 4 12 0 0.25 4th NFC North Mike Sherman – First 6: 1-5
    2006 8 8 0 0.5 2nd NFC North Mike McCarthy – First 6: 2-4
    2007 13 3 1st NFC North Mike McCarthy – First 6: 5-1

So after a 2-4 start best finish: 10-6; worst 8-8
    after a 3-3 start best finish: 10-6; worst 9-7
    after a 4-2 start 13-3; worst 8-8 w/Rhodes in ’99, otherwise 11-5
    after a 5-1 start 13-3; worst 12-4
    after 1-5 start 4-12 in ’05

So being guaranteed a 2-4, to rebound and go 10-6 has been done before.

It will be interesting to see how this post-Favre team plays in November/December… since Favre has been around they have always played well in those 2 months (w/’99 and ’05) as the only 2 exceptions.

I really would love to see a winning streak in those months…boy would that ever be encouraging…

  • Larry

What the hell is going on, get back to football!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Michael Legat

    Matt,

A sincere thanks for doing the homework there. I was wondering about that very thing. The good news is that Harris, Bigby and even the dreaded Justin Harrell are expected to be back in the lineup by mid-month. Their presence within those three positions should be a HUGE difference defensively, assuming they quickly re-acclimate to game speed.

  • Matt Hayton

Harrell better produce or else, that D-Line is screwed, they just don’t have enough guys to handle the reps right now…

Williams has filled in admirably, but Harris would definitelt be a lift.
I didn’t think there was much of a drop off between Rouse and Bigby, but certainly there has been one, w/Peprah…

So, here’s to hoping that this team can get healthy and now steal a couple of wins that on paper they should probably lose…All is definitely not lost at this point in the season and I will reserve further judgment until we play the Vikings again.

I think they will lose the next 3 games (@Seattle, Indy, @ Titans), meaning that I expect them to be 2-5 when they go over to the dome, and that MN game looms large in my mind…big difference between being 3-6 and 2-7, with the Bears coming into Lambeau the next week…I think that if we can win that MN game it could be the trigger for a winning streak in Nov., or I think it could be when this team unravels and throws in the towel. If they win @ MN, I think they could still pull off 8-8, if they lose that game, I think they go 5-11 or 4-12.

  • Matt Hayton

oops meant 2-6 when they go over to the dome

  • Michael Legat

I have a very hard time imagining this team going 5-11 or 4-12. This team, as mediocre as they have played, is not worse than the Seahawks, Colts, Vikings, Saints, Texans or Jaguars. In particular, Hawks, Colts, Saints and Jaguars level of play has dropped off considerably this year as well, mostly due to key injuries. Granted, while we expect to get healthier, so shall all four of those teams.

I know all about Seattle’s home-field record, but that team is just an absolute mess. I don’t see Seattle beating us, and this comes from a guy who wasn’t surprised at all about Atlanta last week.

  • AllAboutThePack

Hey Matt!! Thanks a ton from me as well doing that homework… very encouraging information there. I’m with you Michael, I think we have a lot more talent than a 5-11 or 4-12 team. I really think this team can give a good run once everyone is healthy. I did read something a little distressful today, they are going to sit Clifton this weekend and rotate the OL again. Everytime they use those words, rotate the offensive line, it gives me the heebie jeebies.

  • paul

I just did not think the Charlie Norris reference was funny. Humor is subjective and I don’t think you are funny. Now TT and MM, they are funny.

  • TRIP

    Hayton,

Thanks for the history of Favre in the first 6 games of each season. But what “can be done” is not determined, we have no history of the present QB. I see your point, but simply put, #4 isn’t a Packer anymore, the Packer’s stats with him determine the possibilities now.

All I know, is they better play Seattle like Hell is burning over. Hasselback’s banged up and Aaron better start loving pain.

  • Matt Hayton

Agreed. I just don’t see them winning 6 in a row like Favre did his first year…and that is what it is going to take in order to save this season. Go back and look at that ’92 team. Sharpe and Tony Bennett, that is all they had, everyone else was just guys and somehow they won 6 in a row…this is my measuring stick for Rodgers, he’s got to get this team going…or he is who I thought he was. That is his job as the leader of this football team. Get them going…I don’t care about the excuses, just get them going and win some football games.

Great comments by Ryan Pickett today in the Journal Sentinel:
“It was a night-and-day difference than with the energy we played with last year, and the energy we’re playing with this year,” Pickett said. “It has been like pulling teeth out there. It has not been the same fun and energy that we played with all last season. Sure we made mistakes and stuff like that, but the energy we played with last year overcame a lot of mistakes that we had. We have to get that energy back.”

This is the Favre Factor. Cahnge it Aaron and make it the Rodgers Factor. I’m pullin’ for ya…make me eat my words that you are just a game manager, above average QB, that can’t win games on his own and rally the troops…I dare you. And let’s start this Sunday. A come from behind win in a very tough place to play could truly usher in the “Rodgers era”…let’s get ‘er done.

PS – I’ll be there in person waiting for it to unfold! Go get ‘em boys!!!

  • Matt Hayton

    Legat and AATP-

Do you really think this team is good enough to win 4 out of their 6 remaining road games and Indy at home? Wow. You fellas sure are keeping the faith. I’d love to see it happen, but I’ll take the under on that bet, any day of the week. You both really think they can beat all 4 of these teams on the road: Seattle, Vikings, Saints and Jags…on the road?? I just don’t buy it.

  • Michael Legat

    Yes, yes, depends, depends.

It’s not as much about keeping the faith as seeing the NFL as a whole. Green Bay has not cornered the market on disappointment. You may point out that a Falcon team that was horrible last year just beat us. I’ll point out that a Miami team that one one game last year just beat both AFC Championship teams two weeks in a row. The Chargers and Jaguars were both 11+ win teams last year – both are 2-3. The Seahawks won 10 games last year and this year are losing games by an average of over three touchdowns. The 13 win Indianapolis Colts are 2-2 and Manning has only thrown 5 touchdowns (and 5 interceptions).

Just about everybody right now is vulnerable. The Giants look great, but outside of a resurgent Redskins, they’ve played a 0-win Rams team, a 0-win Bengals team and a 1-win Seahawks team. The wheels are coming off in Dallas very quickly. The Eagles are worse than us at closing a game.

I’m not happy with the losses recently but things are tough all over. I’m not projecting losses on this team. I’m going to wait and see – they’ll either win or they won’t. Every week expert picks are proven wrong. Nobody knows nothing so there’s no sense in assuming the worst.

Also, paul seems to be kinda a dick.

  • Matt Hayton

what you obviously don’t know about the Sea-chokes:
They are awful on the east coast. Historically, they have only won 25% of their games on the east coast.

But for the last 6 years, since they have had their new stadium, they have won 73% of their games at home, 35-13.

They have been riddled with injuries, early-on and are just now getting healthy.
There backs are against the wall, if they lose this game, it’s their season.

So, I would disagree, if we win this game…it’s says ALOT about this team.

  • Matt Hayton

I’m just saying…don’t be surprised if they lose. They’re 1-1 this year at home and the game they lost to the 49ers, they started Courtney Taylor, Michael Bumpus both signed off the practice squad that week, and Billy McMullen at WR. They’ve played the whole 1st month w/guys like that lining up. And they still almost beat the 49ers. Now they are back to Deon Branch, Bobby Engram and, yes, Koren Robinson at WR.

Yes Hasselbroke is hurt but, word is he’ll play and be just fine, though. If he can’t go, obviously, that changes everything. I’m just saying they are better than a 1-3 team, should be 2-2 and maybe 3-1 (if healthy, they would’ve beat the 49ers and a bunch of crazy, fluke things happened to them opening day against Buffalo…)

  • Michael Legat

Branch is out again – and no, nothing would surprise me these days.

  • Matt Hayton

wheww…I looked that schedule again…geesh…they better win on Sunday.

    Indy at home
    Titans away
    Vikings away (must win)
    Bears at home

On paper, I’d say this game is the easiest out of the next 5.

  • AllAboutThePack

Jon says: “Remember, getting all worked up about beating bad teams is what happened after our first two games”

Yeah, and unfortunately, we didn’t even play the Viqueens that have won two games on the back of a different QB. Not sure we would have beat them if Ferret (haha Frerotte) was playing at that time. But, I am confident we ‘should’ beat a battered Seahags team. I also agree that it’s really not a good barometer for where we are at that point. It may give them the needed push to take on Indy the following week and maybe come away with a win. The Titans are going to be a tough one but will be the barometer for where we are and the Vikings with Ferret should give us a completely different look and could be closer than expected.

I’m going to be interested to see how much the refs play a part in this weekends game as well.

How about no FA out there worth persuing? I’m telling you w/ cap, player designation, and roster 53, FA acquitisition is dead. You might hope for a trade in the next few days or forget it; this will be your roster for the rest of the year.

  • TRIP

    Hayton,

Your Ryan Pickett quote is the ultimate case for the Favre Factor, I agree.

And no one who reads that can say that Favre’s presence isn’t missed.

Matter of fact, I’ll repost it for those who missed:

Great comments by Ryan Pickett today in the Journal Sentinel:
“It was a night-and-day difference than with the energy we played with last year, and the energy we’re playing with this year,” Pickett said. “It has been like pulling teeth out there. It has not been the same fun and energy that we played with all last season. Sure we made mistakes and stuff like that, but the energy we played with last year overcame a lot of mistakes that we had. We have to get that energy back.”

    Keywords: FUN, ENERGY, MISTAKES, OVERCAME

    Favre = Fun
    Favre = Energy
    Favre = Mistakes (INTs)
Favre = Overcoming many of the mistakes

Pickett wants that energy back, but a good portion of that came from Favre’s leadership, in my opinion.

And for all you people who have already thrown in the towel, you have no right to criticize me for bringing up the Hall of Famer. I was accused of having a love affair with him, but right now, that sounds better than a love affair with Ted Thompson. :(

Seriously though, our team hasn’t been magical these last 6 years, well last season was great, but we always had confidence that our squad could make that comeback (except Al, lol). I like A-Rod, but can he be more than just a good passer? Can he be that leader, at times, emotional leader to rally up the troops? We know he’s a good player, but let’s pray he can inspire this team.

  • Larry

Awful lot of time wasted on the past. How do you get leadership from a guy with his locker in another room? I suppose I’ll get 50 responses that go “on the field, Jerk” but this year is this year and we can’t assume that a trade will be done before the deadline.

  • Larry

Afterthought: It’s not TT’s team or MM’s team, it’s MY team.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Trip I loved #4′s leadership and love of football, not to mention his skill. But if we’re honest he was too emotional and carried too much of the weight on himself. Starr, Unitas, Montana and even Brady were cooler more calculating and more dependable. I don’t want Rodgers to try to be anybody other than what he is. And, if we had a better running game and defense he would be a Super Bowl QB.

  • Matt Hayton

Hasselbeck is out, nevermind about Qwest Field being a tough place to play bit. THIS IS A MUST WIN…If we lose to Charlie Frye, put a fork in them, they’re done…season over. They’ve gotta win this game. Should be nice to see a Packer victory in person!!! I think they’ll get it done.

  • Matt Hayton

As far as the Pickett quote- call it whatever you want, I’ll referr to it as the “IT” factor, every great team, superbowl winning team has one or two of those guys…and the good to mediocre teams don’t. Point blank, I don’t think AR is that guy…and until they get a guy that has that, we’ll just be ok. But I’m begging Rodgers to prove me wrong.

Look back at the late 90′s Packers – LeRoy Butler, Favre and Reggie…all 3 of those guys had it. I think this is a key missing ingredient for this team to be successful. I think the Packers need to draft defensive heavy the next couple of years and hope one of those guys can grow into that role. Probably not gonna find that via FA or a trade.

  • TRIP

    Mark,

To a point, yeah. But we don’t know Aaron Rodgers in the playoffs yet, so that’s still speculation. And sure, last season ended with a Favre INT, but he lead an imperfect team to a 13-3 and NFC Champ appearance season. Sure, the injury bug is a factor, but we had injuries last year, ENERGY on the field is missing. And in dire circumstances, the leader is missing. We’ve seen this team in this situation before and end up 10-6. Can it happen again? We’ll see.

    Hayton,

Agreed, but of those 3 players with the “it” factor, only one was homegrown. Favre was traded for and Reggie was a free agent. So maybe this team could get another impact player, if available. It’s not like we don’t have cap room. If we need more, cut Ryan Grant, lol.

  • Larry

Big mistake Ryan Pickett, should’ve been said in a private player’s meeting, you’ll greatly regret it being public. What great fodder for those who would rather tear this team apart to get rid of TT and MM than to support the organization – even if some mistakes were made. Everybody makes ‘em.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Trip, last year couldn’t have happened without #4. And like I pointed out, he did more with his young team than Brady, Romo and Garcia did with more talent. But like I also pointed out, the team isn’t as good as it was last year. Special teams, defense, O-line and that’s not #12′s fault.

  • TRIP

    Mark,

I’m not pointing blame on #12. I’m just making a (pointless) claim for #4. It’s no secret #12 has big shoes to fill, but that’s not his fault. If anyone is at fault, it’s the front office. I think Favre could have retired after this year and the Packers could have waited to get the back up QB they wanted.

It’s a very abstract argument, but Favre is missed. The Packers won many close games last year. And Favre made stuff happen. We had games last season like the TB and ATL games, but we won.

    Larry,

You are starting to sound like the establishment. Pickett’s comments weren’t T.O.-esque. He was just being honest. I know you don’t want anything said that could create controversy, but its not like Teddie hasn’t done anything to do that, himself.

It’s the same team as last year minus C. WIlliams but with another year of experience. They are supposed to be better. TT and MM without a doubt thought they would be better off without Favre. They are seeing now how much #4 meant to the team. The made their choice…and at the end of the year I predict TT at least will be “leav – ing on a JET plane”…..lol

Yep, we miss those run-stuffing tackles Favre made. Nobody could run against him. One of the finest d-lineman ever to lace them up. It’s like trying to replace Reggie White. You can’t do it. Favre was one of the greatest defensive players of all time. A legend. Without him the defense is a shell of its former self.

Yeah, poor Ryan Pickett isn’t having any fun making $5 million a year to play 16 football games. It’s like pulling teeth for him to have to put down that double cheeseburger and drag his fat ass out on the field and have some energy. Whaaaa, whaaaaaaaa!!!! I feel for the guy because, obviously, Brett Favre gave him that energy. That’s the only answer here. Brett made a really good cheeseburger along with being almost as tough as Chuck Norris. Be careful paul, Carlos Norris doesn’t sleep, he waits.
