Chance for a high at the bye

The thing I hate most about the bye week in the NFL is the week before the Packers have a bye. Lose and you suck for two weeks, win and everybody is in a great mood for two weeks. At first glance it would appear that the Packers would have a hard time generating that good mood for two weeks because of the opponent they face Sunday. The Indianapolis Colts all of a sudden “found their stride” while beating the lowly Baltimore Ravens for their first win their new stadium and third overall. This after overcoming a 17 point deficit in the final five minutes at Houston the previous week.

Like the Packers, the Colts have beat a bunch of sissies in the Vikings, Texans and Ravens. Pretty much the same as the Packers’ trio of Vikings, Lions and Seahawks. The Colts and Packers are very similar to each other this season. Both have been hit with injuries and both have gotten off to slow starts as a consequence. Both teams have no problem passing the ball, the Colts are seventh in the NFL and the Packers tenth, both struggle running the ball, the Packers are 21rst and the Colts are dead last at 32nd.

On paper this game is dead even, the Packers are 20th on defense and the Colts 21rst, the Packers are 14th on offense and the Colts are 17th. It is hard to even pick a paper champion in this game. The Colts are the exact opposite of what the Packers faced last week in Seattle. The Colts can pass the ball but simply cannot run it. On paper, this plays right into the Packers’ hands. You would think the Packers defense would be able to stop the Colts running game. Of course the Colts are looking at the Packers and thinking this might be the week they can finally get some yardage on the ground. To me, this is where the game will indeed be won.

I think Aaron Rodgers will be able to keep pace with Peyton Manning in a shootout if it comes to that. I doubt either defense will be able to really stop the other. However, if the Packers can muster just enough of a running game to keep the chains moving a few times and keep Manning off the field, things would be much easier. Ryan Grant appears to be healthy, carrying the ball 33 times against the Seahawks, so all we need now is that breakout game he had so many times last year. Sunday would be great time for Grant to have his first 100-yard rushing game this year.

I guess I am nervously confident the Packers will prevail. Going to come out with the early prediction and say 27-24 Pack. Can’t wait to take me seat.

Keep those names in mind Jeff; thats probably your future OL and DL nucleous. I suppose we could pull a Ditka and go for a Bush but that didnt bring a SB to NO did it? Or how about a blockbuster trade like Hershal Walker/Minn which built the Aikman/Smith/Ervin Boys. Whoops! We tried that w/Hadl. I’d rather have 10 picks every yr than that #1 and the record that goes with it. As to trading out of the first rnd (with a good record) a high second is usually as good as a low 1st and a heck of a lot cheaper. Also, the 2 is extremely valuable as trade bait for that team looking for “that” player. Stay the course. I feel like Vince must have felt when he gathered a bunch of underachievers and said “Gentlemen, this is a football”. Well, it takes at least 22 to play – right on cheez, it takes a lot of luck (say lack of injuries) to win it all.

  • Pete H

I’m sorry Larry, but there is where you are dead wrong. That Super Bowl winning team was not built through the draft and midrounders. White, Brown, Dotson, and Jones all came from other teams. As did Robinson, Strickland, Mcmichal, Joyner, Beebe, Rison, Favre, Mcmahon, Prior, Cox, Wilkerson, Jackson, Howard. That is an awful lot of people who had major contributions to that team! TT and Wolf DO NOT do things the same way!!! As for mid rounders…Butler 2nd, Brooks 3rd, Dotson 3rd, Taylor 1st, Newsome, Henderson 3rd, B. Williams 3rd, Freeman 3rd. Those round are supposed to be starters. Look, I don’t mind when people say that we shouldn’t complain too hard about theresults TT has produced, but not for one second has TT done anything near the same way that Wolf has!!! No comparison

  • Pete H

I think some of you people forget how active Wolf was in the free agency market. Yes, he always drafted best player, but he filled needs with guys in the market he knew could play!

  • AllAboutThePack

Pete, maybe that’s the problem, maybe there’s no one available in the market at a reasonable price that can play…

  • Reid

Cali – good call, and funny. And for the record, I meant pay Pro Bowl salaries, a lot of the ‘girls just became Pro Bowlers last year. Let’s see how many of them they can keep when contracts come due.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

So let me get this straight……. No one would give the Pack a second rounder for Favre but a second for TG would be fine. All this after a deal was made for a third for him, paperwork drawn up and Kansas City re-nigs on their deal. Also Wolf had to be active in F/A cuase he couldn’t find a stud in the first round and about 50%, I think, were bust. Get ready for some 2-5 defense this weekend, I think we’ll see a bit more of that! Alot if it’s working.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

If you wanted to go a little farther back, let’s say the 90′s………….. Had Wolf been able to find a decent left tackle, all those play-off games at Dallas could have been in Green Bay. Then the 90′s may have been the Packers instead of Dallas’ decade. I remember them having a Brown (couldn’t block crap), then drafting John Michaels who busted, then they tried Wahle who failed miserably at tackle and half way through that experment they switched to their 2nd rounder Clifton and has bee there since.

  • Jeff

My bad, Larry. I guess the lines are just fine. My mistake.

I’m not suggesting we sell out the team to bring in talent, but I am beginning to wonder just how well we evaluate and develop linemen.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Some of you should keep drinking the Wolf, Wolf/Holmgren kool-aid!!!! You had a team all those years w/the best QB to ever live and the best DE to ever live along w/the mastermind Holmgren/assistant coaches, all on one team and all they got was ONE SB victory. Drink it up!

  • Reid

DA – you are really making a lot of sense to me. Have you been working out on a Total Gym and reading the new book by Chuck Norris, “Black Belt Democracy”?

  • http://Orlando Mark

DA, we were competitve with some all time teams and coaches. That looks pretty good right now. I remember the decades before Wolf!
To have the kind of dominance you mention with free agency you have to cheat like N.E. Who, by the way also got any number of veterans through trades and free agency. Or draft perfectly with very high picks like Dallas and S.F. and hold onto those players. By the way they went after special veterans too.

  • Pete H

Devil’s Advocate, cmon man, TG and Brett are apples and oranges. Everyone in the league had the Packers bent over a table when it came to Favre. Yes they struggled for a while at left tackle, but they couldn’t beat Dallas because they couldn’t stop Emmitt once it came to be the fourth quarter. That is why Dotson was signed, Koonce moved inside, and Robinson was signed. Wolf had one .500 season his entire tenure, the rest were above…..who’s kool-aid should we drink? Lombardi? Fine he was great, once in a lifetime, different era..You, quite frankly don’t make any sense. No other team in the league had a better record over Wolf’s span…..and just so you know, Wolf drafted a failure in Michaels, but he also drafted Taylor, Verba and Timmerman, all who left for more money, and then replaced them with Tauscher and Clifton and Rivera, and Wahle. Your argument is useless. Wolf’s one issue was not getting Brett a stud to throw to after Sharpe got hurt. I am also pretty sure that Holmgren has been to 3 total Super Bowls….I would say thats pretty good eh?

  • AllAboutThePack

Pete, I say good for them, it was great to have them, we have to see what these guys can do – if we give them the kinda time at the helm of GB that we gave Wolf / Holmgren, we might find we have something. These guys aren’t going to do it the same way but change isn’t always a bad thing. Based on what I’ve seen, so far, it isn’t terrible. I think if we go back a few forums here you’ll see that we dug up the records of the teams while Wolf/Holmgren/Favre were in the mix – the teams started out 9-7 for the first three years. I think everyone is missing the point that it takes a new regime time to put together the perfect mix – give it some time, if it doesn’t work it will be hard to hide. So far though, the records over past few seasons don’t give us the “bunch of losers” we are looking for. I think it may take a couple of seasons to figure out if we really ARE barking up the wrong tree.

Larry Says: October 16th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
“What we need is the OL healthy and just maybe, Harrell to be healthy. He (Harrell) didnt look bad to me when he was in there last year.”

As usual, I agree with Larry. We’d all like to see more of this (from packers.com):
At Chicago (Dec. 23), started his first professional contest, filling in for an injured Pickett (groin); set career highs with nine tackles and five solo stops
Started the regular-season finale vs. Detroit (Dec. 30) and posted five tackles (two solo)

Is it disappointing that he’s suffered injuries which have limited his availability for the past three seasons (college & two pro)? Absolutely! Will it be worth the wait if he turns into another Ryan Pickett, giving us a Williams-like tandem in the middle. I’d say yes! It’s not like his injuries weren’t legitimate; he required two surgeries on his back! It’s beyond me how people can call him a bust and compare to Jamal Reynolds or Ahmad Carroll. Those guys had ample opportunity and couldn’t play their way into significant roles. Let’s wait and see how Harrell does when he gets the opportunity…

  • Pete H

If what we hope is that he turns out to be Corey Williams then why trade Corey Williams and not an oft injured Harrell?

  • IC Cyclone Fan

Sorry Pete – I was going for the “Kevin & Pat” comparison, as in the pair of All-Pro’s over in the Twin Cities! I should have been more clear…

  • Reid

I doubt we would have gotten much for an injured rookie 1st round pick. Plus, Williams admitted after the trade that he wanted out of Green Bay If someone doesn’t want to be here, I don’t care how good they are, they need to go and let’s get what we can for them (Javon Walker, Mike McKenzie….) before they destroy the psyche of the guys who do want to be here.

  • Jeff

I’m all for giving Ted and Mike the time they need – hell, I grew up watching Bart’s teams and didn’t bail during the Gregg years. But we’re looking at year four here, and in that time, the only line acquisition who can really be called a significant success is Pickett.

Yes, IC. I agree. I’m still in wait and see mode on Harrell. It would be good to be wrong about him.

My suggestion is that perhaps we need some help off the field – whether that’s scouting or coaching is hard to tell from the couch. We’ve been waiting three years for a pair of serviceable guards, and as near as I can tell, we still don’t have them.

  • RayL

Yeah, we need some help off the field alright….like a GM who watches “the football part”

  • Roy Jamison

I’ve taken heat for saying a certain DT who was drafted number 16 a year before last is a dud. How long do you get to make it in the Not For Long football league? I hope I’m wrong but this guy has Jamal Reynolds or the infamous Tony Mandarich written all over him.

  • Pete H

My bad IC, yes the Williams boys would be sweet. Jeff, what about Woodson? Reid, I agree with you somewhat, but I will say that being here in Chicago I heard all about how Lance Briggs would dare play another down for the Bears 2 years ago……he’s a stud for the Bears. I realy don’t care that much if they love GB or not. Even the ones who love it are still going to go where the money is. Point is will they play like it?

  • http://Orlando Mark

Roy, Harrell doesn’t have to be great or even very good to be of some help. If we had a rotation of useful players like last year we can free up our LB’s and help our DB’s by keeping up pressure on the QB into the 4th quarter. If he can just give us whatever he’s got it could make a difference.

  • Jeff

Pete – I was focusing on the linemen. Yes, Woodson was a great grab. So were Jennings and Jones. Collins seems to be coming around as does Williams and Blackmon. I think Jordy Nelson is looking good too.

I’m not blind to the good things the man has done, but I listed the ten linemen he drafted between 2005 and 2007 and not one has really come alive yet. You could make an argument for Jolly I suppose, but he’s hardly dominant – certainly not a game changer.

I think Harrell gets at least until the end of his second year to show significant promise. If he isn’t doing serious damage by then, I doubt he’ll ever live up to his draft status. He doesn’t have to be a holy terror, but he needs to show us something. C’mon, Justin. Prove me wrong. Make me eat these words. Nothing would make me happier than to have you grow into a screaming stud of a DT.

  • Pete H

Sorry Jeff, you have complete agreement out of me. His line choices have left everything to be desired.

  • Larry

Pete H, thanks for setting me straight about the Wolf FA activity, other than Sean Jones I hadn’t realized the scope of it. It’s tough to admit I was wrong, also, because I’m such a draftnic freak. However, I don’t think its possible to FA with that fervor anymore in any case. The players just aren’t there and the player contract now in place lets the teams designate those they really want to keep. I guess I’m old school and need that $ in the bank for the development of what we have. I’ll replace the prior mistakes with the new draft and do that with extra picks. I think I have an advantage over the next guy when I have 3-4 more picks every year than he does. Its going to take several years of losing teams to prove TT wrong in my way of thinking. Oh well, its still the greatest game and the greatest team and the greatest fans going for me.

  • Pete H

Gotcha Larry. I appreciate his approach, as opposed to say Jerry Jones, I just hope he doesn’t continuously let his best go in order to forego paying anyone top dollar with hopes of always being able to find an equal replacement in the draft. Remember there were alot of people calling for Brunell when Brett wasn’t getting them to the Super Bowl quick enough. Some people, Brett, Reggie, Butler are worht the overpayment. I think that you’re right though in that FA is not what it used to be. I still contend that in some cases, I think I would rather have paid a superstar a ton of money who ends up ordinary, as opposed to an extra pick who ends up to be crap. Neither is worth their money, but ordinary still plays at least.

  • RayL

TT has the 1 dimensional approach and it ain’t working. end of story…bottom line. He’s a loser.

  • Larry

I’ll give it to you RayL, your hindsight is 100% accurate. What I don’t understand is why are you still here? If your answer is something like because I’m such a dedicated fan, did you critize other Packer management GMs like this one when their picks and trades didn’t pan out? Or is it just TT? I’m also wondering how long you’ve followed the NFL and which team or GM has had your backing. I think you should take your credentials and apply to Murphy for a job, we could sure use you in the front office.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

With the 53 man roster of today, it’s pretty hard to keep the needed amount of players that can play if needed and keep many to develope. Do the math and you’ll need 22 for the O and D. Another (3) for special teams. (2)-4 DB’s for the nickel and dime plus at least (1) back-up that can step in and play in case of injury, a (1) spare safety for injuries and (2) LB’s that can play in case of injury. Need one extra of each DT and DE (2) for the DL rotation and again for injuries (2 more). O-line (2) minimum for injuries, G and T, spare TE (1) and RB (1) FB (?). Need (2) WR’s for spread formations on O and a spare for injury (1), an extra QB (1). If you add all those up, that should be the minimum number of players needed every week to play…… and these would have to be guys that can play w/little drop off. That’s 43 for necessity and then they can only dress 45 for a game. That leaves 10 spots extra over the bare bones minimum and if you fill those spots with players to develope for the future and you have a few injuries at one spot, they’ll have to play. You fill those spots w/free agents………… you won’t develope players and will have to play the F/A market every year. Anyway, keep up the good work Larry!! RayL is past reason. Who says we have to drink the kool-aid?? I’m just waiting to see how things turn out……. A win today could be a huge stepping stone to a good year, certainly not the end if they lose. Sometimes winning a game like this or finding a certain play you can run even when the other team knows it’s coming will help a team take off for the year. And now we’ve hit the point of the season where a couple of the 6-0, 5-0, 5-1 teams fall apart and a couple of the so-so’s start their run. Let’s hope the Pack is one of them!!!!!!

  • Larry

A lot of this thread is devoted to Gonz but is he really as good as the stats would indicate? I’m thinking a two was too high. He has led KC in receptions three of the last six yrs with RB leading two and a WR once. The leading WRs averaged 1/2 to 2/3 of his total. There is only one ball! Which of our five top flight WRs would you take the ball away from when they can go to the same spot w/ a lot more speed after the catch. Gonz only averages something like 11-12 yds per catch and averages only five TDs a yr.

  • IC Cyclone Fan

C’mon Larry – Get with the program! A second round draft pick is nothing for a 32 year old with 12 seasons of NFL wear n’ tear and a salary of $11M / year! He did catch three passes for 17 yards in last week’s 34-0 Chiefs loss to the Panthers. Everybody except TT can see he’s the missing piece to put us over the top….
    ;)
