Packers certainly in position

Considering all that has happened since late June, and the schedule the Packers have played, I am more than pleased with where the Packers are seven games into the season. The Packers have already played four teams that made the playoffs last year and another, the Vikings, who were many pundits pick to at least win the NFC. It may not have went according to script, I think I predicted they would be 5-2 at the bye, but I am by no means disappointed.

The Packers have overcome injuries to starters Al Harris, Atari Bigby and Cullen Jenkins, and the defense still had their best game of the year last week against the Colts. All of a sudden safety Nick Collins has emerged as the playmaker he was expected to be. The thing with guys like Collins who come out early and start right away, if you stick with them the reward could be huge. In the case of Collins, the Packers might have hit gold. He still has nine games to play, but I think his play this year has been the surprise of the defense.

Having said that, I feel like I slighted Charles Woodson in a way, but I guess we set the bar is higher for Woodson. After seven games the Packers’ defensive MVP has to be Woodson. He has taken leadership of this defense from the start of the season and because of that the Packers have been able to bounce back from the injuries and are showing what they are really capable of.

Offensively everything begins and ends with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Greg Jennings. These two seem to have found the same niche that former QB Brett Favre had with Donald Driver. That doesn’t mean Driver is not part of the offense, in fact, Rodgers spreads the ball out very well, it is just that Jennings is the bigger talent at this stage of their careers. Driver is an inspiration to the whole unit and his presence should never be understated.

Those who doubted Rodgers’ ability to replace Favre should be feeling much better at this stage. Rodgers has been stellar all year and also showed his toughness in playing through an injury to his throwing shoulder while still playing at a high level. His accuracy is astounding with only four interceptions and two of those were not his fault. He never throws into triple coverage which has resulted in a few more sacks, but fewer game-changing interceptions. The decision to go with Rodgers continues to prove itself each and every week. If Rodgers stays healthy, the only thing he hasn’t proven yet for a full season, the Packers are a playoff team. With the declining Favre, who already has eight interceptions in one less game than Rodgers, the Packers would not be 4-3.

With running back Ryan Grant starting to show some signs of life and head coach Mike McCarthy’s willingness to give him the ball 30 times a game, the Packers are a team to be reckoned with. The defense was mostly responsible for the three game losing streak, and while might be a little harsh, they have redeemed themselves the last two weeks and that shows how good the Packers can be. The Packers’ offense is for the most part much unstoppable, they will get their yards and points, when the defense helps with points of their own, it results in wins like last Sunday. Before I rant about Favre, I will predict Packers 24, Titans 9. Hey, the early prediction worked last week.

Now, since at this point in time, two days after the story broke, it has become clear that the anointed one, Brett Favre called the Detroit Lions to offer tips on how to beat the Packers. Why am I not surprised? Favre has acted like a baby during this whole ordeal. Going on Greta? Come on? Ripping Ted Thompson? Come on? All Thompson has done was turn the team from a loser to a winner. Sorry for that Brett. The fact is the Packers are clearly better with Rodgers at the helm. Favre has looked pathetic since his six touchdown aberration a few weeks ago. His two interception, three fumble performance last week in Oakland I think signals a slow decent into hell. And when former teammate LeRoy Butler says this is only the tip of the iceberg, that there are “other stories that are going to come out” about Favre, Packers’ fans have to be feeling extremely betrayed. And you think I am emotional.

Brett, you’ve gone away mad, now just go away. How sad this is. Favre may not be in the Ring of Honor in Lambeau Field for a long time, and in my mind, should have to wait a year to get in to the NFL Hall of Fame. He has disrespected the game, there is no honor in that. I wish big Irv was around to kick him in the butt. How sad for Packers’ fans and Favre’ fans alike. But how many old time stars have we seen end their careers in disgrace? The list is long. Ad #4 to it. As Vince Lombardi once said “it takes years to build a reputation, but only an instant to lose it.” Brett just lost it.

  • http://orlando Mark

Way harsh. Crowing about the disappointment of a player who gave everything he had for 16 years. I remember Bart Starr being fired as a coach and his bitterness at the time. If it’s true it’s sad and if it’s not it’s pretty viscious. Al you sound more hateful and vengefull than Farve could have been and you’ve been that way since the interception in overtime.

  • Larry

Here again, lets talk football. It really pains me to go thru this BF crap all year because like a lot of you I had a big #4 poster on the wall too. He’s had it and has for a couple of years. I’ll trade those AR sacks for BF ints any day. As Woody Hayes used to say “when you pass only three things can happen, and two of them are bad”. Bart was fired because he was a bad coach, and I seem to remember he was extremely disappointed not bitter. In any case I think the season starts against the Titans and the past (7) games were an extention of the pre-season because of the play of the benchers.

  • cdk4205

Brett made a mistake in OT, the well publicized photos show that, any other target would have likely had a better result. Its fine to be disappointed, but Bart left with class….I don’t believe he could “trash” someone ever. Brett’s ego was / is lots bigger and he is definitely bitter. That final single play is not what he wanted to be his last Packer memory. It always will be his last memory, but it shouldn’t be the defining memory!

Bart knew he wasn’t able to get over the hump as a coach (he wasn’t bad, just average – lots of 8-8 years), doesn’t take anything away from him as the Packer QB with the most titles (apologies to the 1930′s teams), but I don’t think bitter could ever describe him!

It will take a while for Brett to be accepted into the ring of honor…at least five or six years after retirement….if the team tries to do it earlier, it may not be as well received as it should be….but he does belong there and will be enshrined, no matter how he finishes out as a player.

  • cali cheeez

All I know is BF owes me $100 for all of that retirement crap I bought. Plus the more stuff that’s being put out there, the less my other collectables are going to be worth. WTF? Sh!t I’m still POd because I drove 3,000 miles to watch BF play catch with Urlacher, let alone the int in OT. I don’t agree with every thing TT has done or every play MM has called, and I wear a #15 jersey. When BF retired ,his playing and everything else was done, period. I believe he left as a grown man and made decisions as a grown man. Knowone forced him out, they, the best of the best all have huge egos other wise they couldn’t have made it that far. If TTs drafting of AR hurt his ego than oh well ,he needed to understand it was for the future of the Packers. If he was a team player he should’ve done every thing he could have to help the GREEN BAY PACKERS “after” he was gone but he didn’t.
My dream would’ve been (other than winning the SB last year)for him to have turned the offence over to AR and then be a real team leader, leader by example and mentored the team from the sidelines, in case he was needed. IMO the Favre fanatics that think he can walk on water are just blind. They have put Brett above the Packers, to say the Packers would have a better record now w/BF than w/AR to me ARe blind and foolish.
The 16 years with BF have been quite a ride, but I’m ready for the next 10 or so w/AR or MF.
Everyone has been cryin’ about TT not spending money on f/as but now we have money to pay Packer players. Our core guys that have been through the fights with one another.I wish Cory was here but he left for big money. The Titans have been building, the Jags, the Giants (remember when the O-line sucked really bad) have been building for the future and present. The teams that blow their wad for big name f/a ie: cowgirls, skins might start out good but fade in the end. Injuries take there toll. I’m here for now and future. Enough with BF, he’s the past(good or bad). You win the SB in the end not in week 6 or 7. GO PACK GO (man a couple of brews and you start to ramble)

  • cali cheeez

No GM is perfect how many GMs missed out on Chuck Norris?

  • Larry

Very interesting. When BF left the way he did w/ the comments in print and on Gretta, I think we know who had the ego. All the greats did: YA, Norm VanB, Otto, Bart, B’way Joe, Terry, Marino, Montana, I give Aikman a pass because he was in his prime but his bell rung too much. They all had great ego and played too long, so now its BFs turn. Unfortunately the controversy has now pushed the great 16 aside and my thoughts turn to the Strahan dive (my eyes dont lie), lack of support for Clifton’s cheap shot from his buddy Sapp, and the lack of mentoring ARod (“Its not my job”) as well as the moaning over Moss. Probably the biggest mistake MM/TT, or whomever made it, was putting his locker out of the main room; I’m sure that made him feel even more special and above.

  • Pete H

Well now I have alot to address here. Let me digress into my teenage years so that I may be able to respond to the bulk of you who, as I pointed out in the last comments, are wanting reasons to throw people under the bus! Why is everything so black and white with some of you? Do any of you actually think you know the entire story of anything that you have all been blabbing about? It absolutely amazes me that so many can think that whatever happened is entirely one-sided……be it TT or Favre. Yes, I disagreed with the move, but I was never so delusional as to think that Brettt had every right, or any right to act as he did. None of you sat in a room with TT or Brett so you just don’t know, but are all willing to make assumptions based on a story from the press…….any story from the press. Noone waits for any proof of anything….either side. Al, don’t you dare EVER say a respectful thing about Favre again. You have now proven yourself simply to be a vulture when it comes to Favre, and have lost any credibility you might have had left when it comes to the subject with all of your nonsense back and forth slammings followed by adorations when the feeling subsides. It’s childish and ridiculous! Also, what is with the “facts” when it comes to how we would be with or without someone. Really? Thank you Nostradamus. Get real. Can we speak in reality for a little while here.

  • Pete H

From earlier….Reid, my glass is half full…difference between you and me is that rather than jump for joy and ramble on and on about how great my half full glass of water is…I try to figure out how I can fill it! Cali Cheeze, thanks for you third grade input, but maybe if I could run a 4.4 40 I would…..What kind of logic is that????? So, if I see a movie that I don’t like I should just say “man, I couldn’t do any better so thatmust have been really good” DUH….Maybe I shouldn’t vote because these guys have two completely different views, they are both more versed than I am in the subjects, so there options are better than the ones I could come up with. MAKE SOME SENSE!!!!

  • Pete H

Do some of you out there really want to talk about this team?…this season? Or do you just want to make Super Bowl reservations when we win and plan for the draft when we lose? Good grief!!!! I’m happy with where this team is..It has great POTENTIAL, but right now they are 4-3 in an anybody’s race NFC. Just so everyone knows, they have lost to Dallas, TB, and Atl….thats alot of tiebreakers to lose right there. This team HAS to get better still. If this last game had been the rule rather than the exception I would sit around here and get the “warm fuzzies” with all of you, but it hasn’t. They have up and down..sporatic….Al, really…offense unstopable? What 7 games did you watch? They are good, sometimes very good, but I wouldn’t go putting them in with the Pats from last year or the Colts of recent memory. They have often stopped themselves. When Grant puts up a 2nd 100 yd game, not against the worst run defense in the league, we can talk about unstoppable. Lets be happy about where this team could be, but are we really going to make wanting to improve off of a victory a taboo subject and rail on anyone who does as a traitor, a TT basher, not a Packer fan? Get over yourselves….

  • Larry

Well, Pete, your last couple of posts do make SENSE. Its just that as rabid fans (we must be if we can’t even sleep) the frustration level gets so darn high we lose sight of the big picture. Lets face it, we, as Packer Fans are going to have one of those roller coaster years. Yeah, while I’m hopeful, we do have the tie breakers past and the schedule ahead against us. It’ll be tougher than last year thats a given, so I’m one of the 1/2 full crowd and find myself looking forward to the draft already 1/3 of the way in. We’ve beaten the dead horse to shreds so I’d like to propose we concentrate on what we have and what we can possibly do in the future. I do think we start a new season with the TENN game, win or lose. You’re right, lets get over ourselves.

  • Reid

Pete H – I agree. I’m happy at 4-3 but definitely not satisfied. I’m happy the defense played so well the last couple of games without 3 starters and the offense is finally moving the ball via the run. This team can, and I think it will, improve even more. I think Ryan Grant is figuring out that running into the back of his blockers doesn’t get you very far. I think AR is improving his game management because he now has 7 full games of live action and seeing defensive alignments and calling the right plays and check-downs. I’m happy that many of our back-ups have gotten some good experience now as starters and we are still over .500 in spite of all of the injuries. And, we are now getting injured folks back. The glass is getting fuller.

  • Reid

And, Larry, I have to correct you from earlier. Chuck Norris is not “one of” the greatest guys you’d ever meet. He “IS” the greatest guy you’d ever meet.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Pete H(good posts), Larry, CDK, for the record I did not throw Starr under the bus. I think he was the greatest Packer ever. I just wanted to point out that even a great man can be bitter when he’s given his heart and soul to a team and gets dumped. He wasn’t a bad coach, particularly on offense but he was a bad GM, I’m glad the jobs have been separated.

  • Pete H

Why do I get drilled then when I bring up a poor play, game etc..that a player has had, or for wanting to see more before I get comfortable with this team? They can beat Tennessee, but as with the Colts, they will need their complete A game, but in a completely different way. The Titans are going to bruise them with the running game and their D-line. These are the two biggest questions abouth this team. That line (both sides of the ball) is going to get assaulted and they better have an attitude with them. Grant is going to have to run someone over and find every hole that is there when they are there. That D-line is going to get a mouthfull of White and Johnson, speed and power…they need to be angry.

  • Reid

Pete H – I agree again. You’re probably just getting caught in the wash of the other negative posters who want to blame all of the world’s problems on 1 person and think this team has very little going for it. Do a few pull-ups on your Total Gym and you’ll be amazed how much better you feel.

I’m anxious to see if Josh Sitton gets some more time. Early returns before he got hurt were good. Maybe move Spitz to LG and Sitton at RG? Colledge seems to be whiffing a lot, still.

  • JeffN

Wow what a circus, can we stop talking about Favre?

Al, can you please never bring up Favre in one of your blogs again?

Please I beg of all of you stop talking about Farve!

  • stomps

Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah Blah Blah…

Even I’m getting sick of it… Al move on….

  • snyz

They’re still mediocre. Indianpolis sucks bad, I’ve seen all their games. To say were “in position” because of this game is insane. i agree they looked great but come on, the micro-analysis week to week doesn’t make sense. One week we suck, the next, were great. Guess what? We’re neither!

  • Michael Legat

If the Pack are mediocre, they join 24 other teams in this league, with Tennessee, NY Giants, and Pittsburgh qualifying as above mediocre (and based on their SOS Tenn and NY Giants may very well be mediocre as well), with KC, Det, Cin, SF and Oak all consistently lousy.

The “We haven’t beaten any great teams” card is played out – you can make the same argument for all 32 franchises.

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

I don’t bring up Brett Favre, Brett Favre brings up Brett Favre.

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

Yeah, it is too bad the Packers can’t just play the 16 toughest teams from the previous year every season. Then we would know how good they are.

  • Pete H

    poorly played AL

  • Michael Legat

    How so, Pete?

It is yet again the elephant in the room. I’ve said my piece and don’t need to rehash, but it’s a little hard to talk Packer football right now and pretend the Glazer report and Favre’s presser today don’t exist.

  • Mel e Mel

    YOU DONT KNOW DEFENSE!!!
The Defense picks off 3 passes runs one back for a score in the 2nd half at Tampa and somehow thats the Defenses fault. Ryan Grant Fumble on the 1st possesion vs Dallas and that becomes pivotal late as Offense cant generate points in the Red Zone?? The offense is not able to Generate 27 points Vs the Falcons ?? This is all on McCarthys Doorstep. Where is Donald Lee and Tory Humphrey???? The saving grace is that the vikes are a Mickey Mouse outfit and Detroit is glorified Big 10 team. The Bears at least know what they are doing but are more banged up than the Pack.
Does anyone believe this team as currently assembled can go in the Meadowlands and take the NFC back??? The acid test will come against TN. A total opposite of the sissified colts. They play a manly game much like the Giants but hardly any passing.
Daryn College is going to block Albert Haynesworth ?? with perhaps a double team from little Scottie Wells? I can tell you if we dont Get up early on TN you can turn the game off at half time because it will be over.

  • Pete H

It just seems like we are speculating….again….based on incompletes. Glazer said that Favre called the Lions, Favre says Millen called him and they talked for what 20 minutes? What’s the truth? One reporter, known for trying to be the guy with the scoop, makes a big deal out of a story that many “in the know” people don’t seem to care about. There are some that it caught on with, but there always are and thats how scum like Glazer have jobs. Its not like this is something rare in journalism these days. Maybe this does happen alot. Maybe its only because its Favre that Glazer knew he could make a story out of it. All I am saying is that its all incomplete, and from a sensationalist “journalist” and yet many are just waiting to toss the guy under the bus any and every chance they get. Al does not wait for facts, nor circumstance. He simply drills the guy, and it hasn’t been just Favre, then decides to think about it, hear things out, and soften up. That is irresponsible. It accentuates this type of crap, papparazzi style, sensationalist journalism that has now become the norm rather than just buying an issue of the Star, and has pervaded every aspect of “news”. It sickens me. I know for fact that I have heard plenty of times somebody calling somebody before a game for some advice about them. They blabber about it all the time on TV and radio broadcasts. It is now because it is Favre, with a couple of truths twisted that it becomes “The Big Betrayal” Honestly, he’s gone now, what does he owe this team? For his time here he gave everything he had and thats what he owed them. You think Edgar Bennett didn’t help out other teams when he was gone? Levens? Freeman? Reggie?

  • Pete H

Who are you talking to Mel?

  • Pete H

Tell you what, I’ll answer anyway. It is the defenses fault when they serve up 30 pts to a one trick pony like Tampa after getting three picks, and 27 at home to the Falcons. It is, however, not solely the defenses fault. That’s been pointed out.

  • Reid

Like the Packers, I am taking the rest of the week off to work on my roundhouse kicks and spend some time on the Total Gym with Christie Brinkley. I’ll see you all next week.

  • Larry

As I was originally against the $ outlay for Woodson, a great mea culpa is in order. I think the D spark has been ignited by the DBs and I think Woodson is the match. The last couple of games clips I’ve been able to watch and focus on #21. I’m not there but it seems to me he’s helping Collins with the calls and he’s sticking to his man like glue. If only BF would have been as interested in AR. Sorry to bring that up. Looks like Woodson could play well into his late 30s as well. Mea Culpa!

  • Matt Hayton

I’m growing weary of all of this Favre, TT banter. think I’ll just focus on the future of this team. As it has been stated the Titans are a big test. I think it is possible for this team to go 5-0 in November, but I also think it is possible for them to go 0-5. Think they will either get hot and get on a roll or get their rears handed to them by the Titans and the Bears and go on a skid…first 2 weeks out of the bye should determine the rest of the season.

My biggest concern is how our O-Line can hnadle the D-Lines of both the Titans and Bears…think the games will be determined in the trenches, which is the weakness of this team…if somehow the O-Line can pull things together, this team can do alot of damage, if they can’t, think we are in trouble. I’m still gonna say 7-9, but hope for the best.

  • JeffN

    Mel e Mel said

“the vikes are a Mickey Mouse outfit”

That is the best line I have heard on this forum ever. You deserve credit for that… and it’s so true!!!

  • Larry

Matt I cant agree with the 7-9, but do agree we could go 5-0 or 0-5 in Nov. However, I think too little has been given to the impact of Well’s injury. That fact alone has had everyone playing out of position. Also, I think Clifton has been playing with more serious an injury than has been let on. Grant is a one cut back and thats the way the Bronco system is designed and if the Olinemen dont get out of his way hes going up their back. I see through my rose colored glasses that the injury bug has left and we will finish like we did last yr. What the heck, they’re the same guys on O and the D is better. Keep in mind we’ve had at least 3 or 4 starters out evey game and 3 or 4 starters that have played through it haven’t been anywhere near 100%. Thats the way I see it!

  • Larry

Like we were last year, Titans have been playing over their heads. I dont think they’re that good. Couple names on D, but we’ll handle the rush. Kearse isnt what he used to be and Haynesworth is just a run stopper that cant do it all himself. AR with a “career” day and even Jones will be back.

  • JeffN

Well in those games we lost it was the O-line that was the bane of the D-line. The lack of O-line kept the D-line on the field too long. So I agree Larry that now that the O-line is playing better the D-line will get much stronger also leading to a much better team. The improved O-line play leads to the following things:

    1) better running game

    2) better passing game

    3) more play action oppurtunities (watch for this closley in the next weeks)

    4) better D-line

    5) better D-line leads to better secondary and more picks

So yes the injuries on the O-line affected all the above things big time! They should all be back to 100% after this bye week. although it would be nice to have the type of depth on the O-line that we have in the secondary.

  • Larry

True. However, the backup Olinemen have gotten a lot of playing time just like the backup DBs. My confidence level regarding the bench has increased a great deal. Thats why I think this team is better than last year.

  • Pete H

I would agree with you Larry, but those backups on the O-line have been there long enough that they shouldn’t need playing time. From earlier, Woodson is an absolute stud. Though I have had my opinions about some TT moves, that has been one of the better signings in football in a while. These DBs are getting better and I am excited about a long future that we could have there. I don’t know how good the Titans really are, but they are extremely physical and big. Thats why I say they are going to need to bring an attitude with them. Part of what makes them who they are is just brute force, not neccessarily talent. If you can push people around all day long, talent will often get pushed away with it.

  • Larry

Yep! What I meant by the experience factor of the OL was more about the “out of pos.” aspect. Oh, you’re so right, the Pack has to bring their “A” game and show some life.

  • AllAboutThePack

I’m excited about this game from a the perspective that it could be a huge turning point for this team and for the fans this season. I’m apprehensive about the game because if we lose, it could bring a lot of worry to those currently ridding the fence on what the identity of this team is. I think they’re on the cusp of figuring out who this team really is and what they can really do. I’ve seen enough to believe they have a legitimate shot at the 5-0 Matt and Larry are talking about. But like them, I also believe, if they loose this next game there’s a chance they could lose that momentum going into December when it’s needed the most. I probably am putting more on this game then I should, but I think this game is the turning point. On paper they’re not that good, but they DO have a lot of confidence coming in as the only undefeated team in the NFL right now. So that confidence makes them dangerous. But I also believe, if we beat them, you’ll see them spiral out of control and probably lose a majority of their remaining games. We’ve felt defeat already so I think we’re the better team at this point in the season.

  • RayL

Great win, but after watching Indy, boy do they stink. We will see..the next 2 games will tell alot.

Tony Gonzo has 16 1st downs, our TE’s combined have 10. Ya think that TG would be a weapon? especially with our receiving corps? Pick your poison…he would be shredding defenses and moving the chains…

  • Dan

The Titans haven’t played anyone with a winning record. It’s easy beating chumps like the Chiefs, Bengals, Texans, Vikings.
Only reasonable teams they beat are the Jaguars and Ravens.
3-3 Ravens, have beat (Cleveland, Cincy, and Miami). No decent teams there.
3-3 Jaguars appear to be the only real team the Titans played. Jaguars have at least played some real competition and have a win against a team with a winning record.

The AFC only has 5 teams with winning records. Clearly, the AFC is down.

The only fear factor with the Titans is their running game can control the clock. With an extra week to prepare, the Packers should be able to stuff the run. Put 4 LBs out there is you need to, the Titans are among the worst passing teams in the league. It’s the same as facing the Vikings, only the Titans have a better defense and a coach that knows football.

  • Michael Legat

Modern litmus test for determining quality of other teams:

Team A beats Team B: Team B stinks anyway.

Team A loses to Team B: Team B is average/overrated/stinks and now Team A stinks more.

Wins are wins in the NFL. The Titans are for real. (Not to say they aren’t beatable.)

  • Pete H

    Amen to that

  • snyz

Reid! nice comment on the total gym!!

  • iccyfan

paul Says: October 20th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
IC cyclone,Let’s see some consistency before you blow your wad. We got beat by Atlanta and tried really hard to lose to Detroit until Kitna refused to let us lose. Lastly, your head is on the top of your body and your a** is on the lower half as it seems as if you are having difficulty telling one from the other…bit*ch…..Go Pack

It appears as if I’ve gotten into the self-proclaimed psychologist’s head! :) Such venom for a simple Richard Simmons bait is hilarious…

  • Pete H

    what exactly is your point?

  • Pete H

first you babble about what Paul said about consistency, then you bring up 2 games? out of 7? How’s that consistent?

  • iccyfan

Pete – the entire first paragraph is paul’s rant directed at me; it would have been more clear had I enclosed his writings in quotations. My response is only the final two sentences, wrapped around a “smiley”. paul scripted the profanity-laced tirade…

No point really – just poking fun at a self-proclaimed Packer die-hard who hates TT, has claimed he’s a psychologist and predicted the Packers to go 4-12 earlier this month.

I usually stick to discussing my opinions on the Packer team but got side-tracked into a spitting match with paul because we’ve got a two week lull. I’ll cease and desist. I believe that TT is doing a great job and trading Brett Favre was the right thing to do given the options he had, but that argument has long since ceased being interesting. I’ll quit poking the bear by baiting those who think differently.

  • TRIP

Al, you sound a lot like your description of Favre.

For once, make a VALID argument to why Rodgers was an upgrade? There are plenty, but all yours suck. Firstly, you really can’t compare what Favre is doing now in an entirely different offense on an entirely different team to the MVP-caliber season he had last year. Once again, your anti-Favre HATE means nothing because you are not objective, you have HATED Favre from the beginning. For the last 4-5 years I’ve sat here and read the same anti-Favre gibberish. And now you think you’ve made a point, HA!

Al, I don’t want to be personal, but its annoying. You don’t have 2 legs to stand on. You are as bi-polar as it comes. You have no lasting convictions. When a bad week comes around, you lie down in defeat because your only argument is Favre sucks, Thompson rocks! LOL! Give me a break! Come up with something better. You do NOT know how Favre would fair this season with the Packers, if given the opportunity. We all like Rodgers, that’s not the question.

But a point is made when every time something happens not in your propaganda’s favor, you start screaming LET’S TALK ABOUT FOOTBALL. But when it suits you, you continuously bring up some guy playing for the Jets. Accusations are just that. But for you, you don’t question it, if makes you look good.

Though I like A-Rod, I think we could have beat ALL the teams we beat with Favre. Even the Colts, they were pathetic. I hope it was a sign of a rebound, but who knows who the Colts are this year. They played as bad as the Seahawks. And Favre probably could have helped us to wins versus the Hawks and the FALCONS. Who knows? It’s all speculation.

With that, how about I steal your line. “Let’s talk about football,” and why this team is/is not for real! GO PACK!

“For once, make a VALID argument to why Rodgers was an upgrade? You really can’t compare what Favre is doing now to the MVP-caliber season he had last year.

    ===========================================

I’ll play along, just for the sake of some bye-week fun.

Through 7 games in 2007, the Green Bay Packers were 6-1 and had scored 161 points. Brett Favre was 166 of 250 (66%) for 1875 yards (7.5 yards / attempt) with 11 TD passes and 7 interceptions. He rushed the ball 13 times for (-4) yards (-.3 yards / attempt) and 0 TD’s. He was sacked 12 times.

Through 7 games in 2008, the Packers are 4-3 and have scored 194 points. Aaron Rodgers is 145 of 221 (66%) for 1668 yards (7.5 yards / attempt) with 12 TD passes and 4 interceptions. He has rushed the ball 30 times for 113 yards (3.8 yards / carry) with 3 rushing TD’s. He has been sacked 13 times.

    +/- Synopsis:

Favre Positives: Packers were two games better in record last season at this point. Favre had passed for more yards (207 yards on 29 more attempts) and was sacked one fewer time.

Rodgers Positives: Team has scored more points (+33). AR has more TD passes (+1) and fewer interceptions (-3). He is +117 yards rushing and +3 in rushing TD’s.

“Wash” Category: They have the same completion percentage (66%) and the same average yards / passing attempt (7.5).

Conclusion: Aaron Rodgers is having a better statistical season (thru seven games) in 5 of 8 pertinent categories. He is having an identical season in two others. Advantage Rodgers!

More Data for those wishing to continue the Favre versus Rodgers argument (for fun during a slow bye week):

Through the first seven games of 2007, Brett Favre only faced three teams which would eventually participate in the playoffs, namely the Giants (yet to find themselves), Chargers & Redskins (pre-Todd Collins resurgence).

Through the first seven games of 2008, Aaron Rodgers faced four teams which were playoff participants the previous season, namely the Cowboys at full strength, Bucs on the road, Seahawks on the road and Colts.

TRIP (and other BF lovin’ TT haters) – you wanted a “valid argument” as to why some might consider Aaron Rodgers an upgrade to Brett Favre, who by your assessment, had an MVP-caliber season in 2007. I’ve given you such, using pure statistics and facts as opposed to opinion or emotional speculation.
