Packers becoming battle tested

The Green Bay Packers may only be 4-4 and by all means could have had a better record at the midpoint of the season. But considering all the turmoil of training camp and the injuries to the defense, and the fact they have played only two teams with losing records at this stage of the season and just took the best team in the league to overtime on the road, I’m not too worried. In fact, I’m kind of excited. This Packers’ team and new quarterback Aaron Rodgers are becoming more battle tested every week. Poor Rodgers, he has to play a first-place schedule in his first year as a starter as opposed to the third-place schedule the Packers played last year. No cream-puffs other than Detroit and Seattle thus far. Six of the the Packers’ eight games have been against opponents with at least a .500 record. To be .500 is not all that bad after that.

No matter what, the first half of the season is a learning process for the Packers and new quarterback Rodgers. For most of the first half of the season the Packers’ defense has been a sieve against the run, the last three games they have improved, but the early damage was done. If the Packers want to look at the game that they really blew in the first half it has to be the Falcon loss. The Packers might have been overconfident going into that game and even though the Falcons are proving to be a pretty good team, it was still a game the Packers should have won.

For his first eight games as as a starter, I couldn’t be happier with the way Rodgers has played and the fact that the Packers have amazingly found a quarterback to lead them for the next ten years hopefully. Rodgers, at age 24, is light-years  ahead of where Brett Favre was when Brett was 24. In this day and age of the NFL, quarterbacks who make mistakes like Favre did in 1992 and 1993 find themselves on the bench. The Packers finished 8-8 both years. I guess Favre couldn’t raise the level of play of Sanjay Beach to Jerry Rice level at that time. Don’t ask me why.

I don’t think the Packers will finish 8-8 this year. I think 10 or 11 wins are more likely. Ten will probably win the division and ten is what the Giants won in the regular season last year. Like the Packers of this year, the Giants started slow and lost tough games to tough opponents. Not only did they rebound, the rebounded by winning it all and now carrying it over to this season. They did it with a 27-year old quarterback. I may be wrong but I don’t think a 39-year old quarterback ever won a Super Bowl, in fact I doubt one ever made it there.

I think the way the Packers played against the Titans was a strong effort. If anything the Packers’ vaunted secondary had one of its worst games. Three dropped interceptions and gave up crucial pass plays to receivers who couldn’t make the Packers’ practice squad. One of those crucial pass plays was a linebacker mistake though when Chris Johnson was left wide open in overtime. That play pretty much won the game for the Titans. Rodgers was the first QB to pass for 300 yards on the Titans and running Ryan Grant had his best game, if not yardage-wise. The Packers should have used Grant much more in my mind as he was gaining huge chunks of yardage at times. After giving him the ball 64 times the previous two games, for some reason head coach Mike McCarthy went away from the run and as usually happens the Packers lose.

I know everybody is gripping right now, but lets see this thing play out. I am not concerned about 4-4, I am excited about the future of this team with the improving Rodgers at quarterback, not only this year but in future years. If Rodgers’ career would have started last year, the Packers might have won the Super Bowl. One thing is absolutely indisputable, Rodgers would not have thrown that lame duck in last year’s NFC Championship game. This year Rodgers is on pace for 10 interceptions while Favre is on pace for 26. I know who I want.

If Rodgers thought the Packers opening night game against the Vikings in Lambeau Field on Monday Night Football was a big deal, he hasn’t played in a big game yet, which in a way he hasn’t. This week’s game against the Vikings in Minnesota is the biggest game of Rodgers life. A loss to the Vikings and dropping to third place in the division could be disastrous, then again in the NFC North this year, who knows? Now I sound like Mr. Kimble. But falling below .500 will put the heat on like we haven’t seen since Mike Sherman’s last year as head coach. I don’t see it happening. Rodgers bounces back, the defense bounces back, Packers 34, Vikings 13.

Al: I don’t think the Packers will finish 8-8 this year. I think 10 or 11 wins are more likely.

Since when is it likely that a team that can’t win the close games are LIKELY to go 6-2 or 7-1. I mean, why so conservative, let’s “predict” 8-0! No one PREDICTED a surge from the Giants until it started happening. And it showed itself in the Giants’ play. Everything here is 100% talk.

I WANT this team to be a 10-win team. But it if were, it would have beaten the Titans and gone 5-3. Not continue to lose winnable games and amazingly come up with a 6-2 finish, that’s NOT likely. I pray I’m wrong. But the 4 best teams we’ve played this year are, the Cowboys (with Romo), Buccaneers, Falcons and Titans. And there’s one team all those teams have in common; they beat the Packers. We’ve yet to make a statement. And truth be told, when the Packers were stinking it up really bad, Al equated that with “Jon being right”. So it’s obvious that he is more concerned about being “right versus Jon” than being honest (with himself) about the team’s chances when we could very well lose to the Bears twice, again.

  • Larry

Therein lays the INT stat trap. W/O the 288 BF would have been the greatest of all time. Thats 288 times the ball was turned over to the other team. 288 times we didn’t score. As for the continuous starts who knows how many games we lost because he shouldn’t have? In all honestly who on that list would you rather have leading your team in their prime? Maybe you can exclude Fouts from consideration because he couldn’t play in the cold. In any case the comparisons are fruitless given all the factors that it takes to win consistantly.

  • Larry

Curious, why were Montana and Young left off the list?

  • Pete H

Larry and Al, please stop this ridiculous notion of trying to downplay what Favre meant to this franchise and what he has accomplished. It really makes you both look like football novices. Just the same as Jon, who has already proven that he truly knows nothing about actual football, but gets an A for fact finding. You guys are to the point now where you are reusing the same facts that you already have. I bet if I wanted to I could probably find 3 stats that tell me that Randy Wright was the best QB in Packer history. How pathetic is it Jon that you truly can only talk about Favre? That you apparently watch this blog day after day just hoping someone mentions his name in an unpositive light so you can spring in with the same stats you have already used that prove ZERO. Every QB on your “lists” has merits and is probably thought to be the “best ever” by many people in those cities.I am truly embarrassed for you.
Al, how pathetic is it that you try to curb the opinions expressed on this blog by asking for certain things to not be discussed here, and then, when it suits you, you bring it up again? Then, you don’t even use REAL facts! My God, you two sound like 13 yr olds going back and forth. If you really want to try to reduce what Favre has done because he didn’t handle a situation regarding the rest of his life in the greatest manner then so be it, but you had better point out how TT didn’t handle it very well either. Yes, he absolutely screwed up!!! He is a DAMN human!!! Paul Hornubng was kicked out of football for a year…do you despise him for what he did to this franchise? Wake up! For you to try to quantify what Favre did even last year with Rodgers’ performance thus far this year shows you to be football ignorant. You may love football and the Green Bay Packers, I don’t doubt that, but you certainly don’t know it. I mean really, did you honestly say with any real belief that there is no way Rodgers throws that pass in the Championship game? What the hell kind of statement is that? So you’re saying that Rodgers has yet to throw a faulty pass, or at least not in the clutch time of a game. I beg you to watch these last 4 losses. He has made some critical mistakes. As to be expected. He has performed wonderfully. No one, with any football sense Jon, could argue that with reason, but don’t put him on the field last year…he wasn’t, and they had a hell of a year…much because of Favre. You are still talking about last year and yet you implore people to get hyped up about this year. If you honestly think this team has as good as shot as last years team and his headed for greatness in the future then stop whining about what could have been last year!

  • Pete H

I cheered for this team just as loudly when Dickey threw a Td to Lofton and Coffman as I did when Favre threw on to Freeman or Driver….or Wright to Perry Kemp, or Majkowski to Query….and now Rodgers to Jennings or wohoever. When this team scores I cheer, when they win I cheer. When they lose I get pissed, when they screw up I get pissed. Whether it is Favre, Rodgers, Driver, Ivory, Jackie Harris, Paul Ott Caruth, Grant, Green, or Ellerson. I even cheered when it was Schroeder…most of the time. when I see a bad move made I question it whether it is MM, Starr, Gregg Sherman, Holmgren, especially Rhodes, TT, Wolf and so on. When they make a good move I applaud them for it. I willnot try to immaturely downplay what anyone has brought to this franchise in order to make a point about someone I like better. Grow up Al, Jon, all else

  • AllAboutThePack

    AMEN BROTHER!!!

  • Pete H

If you want I will find a flaw with every QB on your “lists”, as well as a “reason” why they are better than anyone else.

  • AllAboutThePack

Umm… that was for Pete… you guys post faster then Chuck Norris in a fist fight…

  • Pete H

Ahmad Carrol played football for many years, including college. I am just as sure that I know as much about football as he does as I am that I know more than you. Once again…useless fact

  • AllAboutThePack

Hey Pete, you do have to admit that Jon kinda keeps Al honest in most respects – I do have to give him kudos for that. Some of the ways he attacks might not be in the best interest of those on this board that want to talk football today – the here and now.

I think arguing with him probably isn’t in your best interest either – you’ve moved on just like most of us on this board accept for Al, Jon, Matt, RayL and a few others. Most of us post meaningful, here and now, stuff. Let them banter and lets move on with what’s happening today and where we think we’re going instead of harping on where we’ve been.

I think I’ve agreed with almost everything Larry and Pete have posted out here as of late. Now lets get back to the FUTURE of the Packers and where we’re going, not where we’ve been unless you want to analyze the first 8 games to help deduce what’s in store for the next 8.

  • Pete H

I do get your point about Al though

  • Reid

This season, AR will make $12.9 million – that’s $320,000 of his original $680,000 base salary already paid under his old contract plus $12.58 million in new money to be paid the rest of the season, a sum that is guaranteed.

It means Rodgers will be paid more this season than his predecessor, Brett Favre, who will be paid $12 million by the New York Jets.

That’s kind of funny. TT is sticking it to you Jon, Matt, etc. Enjoy.

  • Pete H

The next 8 lies in he hands of the Def. They have to figure out how to get off the field in the 4th. Time and time again this year they have failed down the stretch. They also need some red zone imagination.

  • Pete H

    Very well done, cap wise…

  • AllAboutThePack

Al, I would stick to your own requests as well – stop fueling this type of crap on your own forum or at least warn those of us that aren’t interested hearing about the “what if’s” that you’re about to drop a bomb out here to start a new argument so we can all wait it out.

I agree that at .500 we’re not in as good a position as we’d like to be but with that said, I think we can at least win 4 more games to stay at .500 to finish the season but would really like to see 10-6 to close out the regular season. With everyone back, healthy and practicing, I think we have a shot to really start showing some strength. I was happy to see that the reason Taucher was out was due to a reaction to medicine and not a injury – moved the line around and may have caused some of the problems up front. With the OL back at full capacity I think this week will be a good week. The Viqueens don’t have near as many weapons as we do and I think our DL is coming on finally. I really believe they will hold AP under 100 yards this weekend and force ol’ rubber arm to throw more then he’s used to.

  • AllAboutThePack

Hey AL!!! Wish we could go back and edit our stuff – something to add to my Christmas Wish List… :)

  • Larry

Darn it all, PeteH you got me again. I have no comeback since I agree that Randy Wright may well have been the best GBP QB of all time, except maybe for Jerry Tagge. C’mon guys this is fun. My only regret is the name calling and insults. In another sport we’d call it the Hot Stove League. So enjoy, means nothing in the long term anyway. None of us are smart enough to run THE organization.

  • AllAboutThePack

Oh, contraire there Larry, I’m smart enough to run THE organization – it may be into the ground, but I’m smart enough to run it… ;)

Jon Says: November 5th, 2008 at 6:06 am
Icky says: “If you can’t see the parallels between the Montana / Young and Favre / Rodgers dramas, it means you’re too young to remember 1992″
    ==========
If you can’t see the glaring differences between the Montana situation and the Favre situation, it means you’re Ted the Albino Barn Owl. Here they are, laid out nice and slow:
    1. Montana was injured and missed ALL of 1991 and VIRTUALLY ALL of 1992 (he played in ONE game in ‘92). He was traded because: (1) he was injured, and (2) he hadn’t played in two years.
    ==========

Jan – Please note that in my original comparison of the two situations, I pointed out that Montana missed 1991 and most of 1992 with an injury. Therefore, you’re ever so slowly informing me of something I brought to your attention?!? You also conveniently ignore the FACT that Montana elevated the Chiefs and made the Pro Bowl in 1993. He wasn’t traded for the two reasons you cite; he was traded because the organization had decided to move on with Steve Young. I’ll ask again: are you old enough to remember the Montana / Young situation of 1992-1993? I’ll take your silence as a “no”…

As for Pete & Larry, I don’t think any conversation of all-time Packer great QB’s is complete without mention of Anthony Dilweg. I was a big fan of Laverne’s grandson; too bad Lavvie never got to see him play in the green & gold…

Now, back to the future. Our much maligned d-line should be able to get some pressure on the stone-footed Gus Frerotte. Jared Allen has a bum shoulder and hopefully the NFL will make a ruling on the steroid-masking Williams tandem this week. I see a big offensive week in our immediate future…

  • Larry

-Like I’ve felt since the 3rd game, OL. If one wanted to draft for need it’ll be easy to figure. Dilweg good, but no Carlos Brown.

  • Larry

iccy I hope I give you a dose of confidence. Montgomery had a good game (sack, 2 no gains, and a deflection) and while Harrell didn’t play many snaps he did have a stop for a loss and good penetration. Pickett played as usual w/ a sack. I think that bodes well for the next couple of games regarding DL rotation. I’m now more concerned w/ the LB play which was never a concern until lately.

  • Reid

Larry – did Grant find out about Harrell’s “penetration” abilities? I hope not, or our O-Linemen are in big trouble if he takes some pointers from Harrell.

  • Larry

Wow, too much. Memo to those who think TT is a tight wad. OAK committed over 250 mil last off season, and who knows what WASH total was a couple years ago. I still like our approach to team building.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Larry, TT is a tightwad, particularly when it comes to aging players. Giving Rodgers his money using this years cap was a prudent move and I applaud it. But for some reason good older veterans are invaluable to championship quality teams. We’ve all seen veteran backup QB’s like last week that make absolutely critical contributions. Same goes for TE(Shannon Sharpe, Ravens), RB(Bettis, Steelers), our own Woodson at DB, DE(Charles Haley, Cowboys) etc., etc. We need to sprinkle in useful veterans by free agency or trade if we’re going to be special.

  • Larry

We’ve got (4) FAs on defense that I know of and (3) of them start!

  • Pete H

Using the Raiders and Redskins are poor examples of free agency. Noone expects them to go out and spend like the wind. I think that the majority of us have said that we only wished he would add some more contributable vets. For some reason I don’t think Frank Walker was the answer last year. Nor do I think that Brandon Chillar is the guy to put them over the top, as well as he has done.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Larry, I’m talking about somewhat older veterans who can still play. The way Sam Adams helped the Ravens or Kieth Jackson helped us.

  • Larry

Ok then, lets use Mark’s post as an example. Also, throw in the greatest pick-up ever, REGGIE and TO in DAL. (I’m not sure if TO was a FA) MINNs DL. My point is that of all of the magna FA signings they have contributed to about (6) SBs of (40) Everybody has FAs on their roster, so do we, but its the draft, draft, draft that builds winners and for that the extra picks give you the advantage. I repeat it can happen, again like REGGIE, but the odds are against you and in many cases you break the bank and can’t sign the home grown to extensions.

  • Larry

We have (17) FAs on he roster. There aren’t but a 1/2 doz. every year worth spending big $ on that become available to divy up between (32) teams. Sam Adams and Keith Jackson are great examples but I put them in the 1/2 doz category, not the streets like we have. My gosh, look what we got in Bigby!

  • http://Orlando Mark

My point is that Keith Jackson and Sam Adams didn’t break the bank.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Oh, and they weren’t wonderful or great but neccessary cogs to great teams. I should have put in our SB MVP of 1996 as well.

  • AllAboutThePack

So according to reports it looks like we have entire 53 man roster on the field, healthy and practicing. That’s good news when it comes to having all the pieces to the puzzle available during practices. Considering all the off field stuff happening with the Viqueens right now I think this could be a one sided blow-out. I think the Pack have a strong game and erase a few of those mistakes from last week and roll to lopsided win. I think from here forward this will be a team to be reckoned with in the NFC as they gain steam headed to the late part of the schedule. I might be a little optimistic, but so many teams are struggling it seems and those that aren’t haven’t had any significant injuries – yet.

Here is my short wish list for this team:

    1. Harrell picks it up and becomes the player everyone expects him to be.
    2. The OL starts blocking to the second level to give Grant some running room.
    3. The DL and LBs start disciplining themselves to stay gap sure.
    4. The DL starts putting more pressure on QBs – like last week.
    5. The playcalling and audibles at the line are more consistent.

Only a few things I’d like to see, I guess since I’m wishing here I’d better add that I’d like to see the Pack win the NFC North again and romp into the playoffs gaining strength as they go.

  • Larry

There you go! Now that the election is over we can get our heads together and solve the real problems. Chris Berman “best 4-4 team in the league”.

  • AllAboutThePack

Go Boomer!!! Speak that stuff… LOL

  • Larry

AATP #3 and modified #2 top my list; got to get the #1 OL on the field. A lot of #s, but isn’t this a #s game?

  • paul

It must be getting cold up there in Wisconsin as you all seem to be getting cabin fever. Everyone is invited down to my house in Arizona for the month of November/December as I really am concerned about your mental health. As it is Al’s blog, I still believe that no post should be deleted unless it is profane to the point of being offensive to what most people would consider over the top. I would love to hear some of you during a Packer’s game, if you are like my brother and I, there are no words off limits. Lastly, I am a Superfan with Direct tv, 60 inch tv, 3000 sq ft homel, hi def, the works….come on down and let some of that cabin fever, or cheeze melt a bit. Today it is 80 degrees and never any clouds…peace and love, Paul

  • AllAboutThePack

Similar stats all the way around here in Texas – on my TV is bigger… ;) Love the weather, hate the Cowboys and miss the snow sometimes… Hate watching Packer games down here cause we can never seem to pull out a game in this dump they call Cowboys stadium – maybe the new, overpriced, stadium they’re building will fare better for a Packers visit. Only I probably won’t be able to afford a ticket to see the game there considering face for endzone is somewhere around the $300 area. Would rather travel to Lambeau anyway to enjoy the game in a friendly environment where everything isn’t overpriced compared to here. :)

  • Larry

There can be danger in what you wish for; I’m only a 12 hr drive away……….

    AATP, PeteH, Reid, Larry-

    Matt Hayton Says:

    November 4th, 2008 at 3:46 am
Well…I’ve grown weary of the banter again, so I’ll just comment on the here and now. I agree with Jeff. I don’t see this team going 6-2…in the second half. I think 5-3 and 9-7 is a good goal to have. I personally still think we’ll end up being 7-9. I think the entire season comes down to the next 2 weeks, especially now with Kyle Orton being out. I really think we need to win the next 2 games to get into the playoffs. I think that is the difference between this team going 7-9 and 9-7, or even 10-6.

After 4 or 5 months of this going back and Favre/Rodgers, I’m done…and I too just want to move on and discuss the here and now.

I think this much can be said:
    1. I think there will always be division over how the Franchise handled the situation.
    2. In the wise words of TT(Yes I said that): “History will prove if it was the right decision or not.” And one side will be eating crow.
    3. Favre is one of the top 2 QB’s in franchise history (Starr/Favre) and one of the top 5-10 of all time (Elway, Montana, Unitas, Baugh, Marino, Staubach, Favre, etc.). Favre is in the conversation.
    4. Rodgers still has alot to prove, just like Favre did at this point in his career.
    5. I, contrary, to popular belief am pulling for Rodgers. None of this was his fault, and he deserves all of our support, just like any other Packer.
    6. And I’d rather be wrong and us win some SuperBowls w/AR, than right that he is a just a game-managing QB, that can’t get the job done and that we will be a good team, 9-7 and 10-6 for the next decade and never win a SB, which is what I think will happen.

All of this being said…I will focus on the here and now, moving forward. Which right now is the Vikings…tough place to play…we have to face the Williams brothers and AP…keys to the game in my opinion, are running the ball and stopping the run. We have to beat them at their own game…

I think we need to stack the box and beg Feret to beat us…I think we can go man to man and handle their receivers…And I think we need to bring back the 5-wide and spread out their defense to start the game to soften them up. I think they need to come out firing, just like NE did last year against them on that Monday night. And if we could do those two things I think we can win the game…GO PACK GO!!!!

  • Jake C

haha. i love jon. at least he got away from world of warcraft long enough to annoy most of us. i have nothing against productive debates, but i think someone should be able to admit they are wrong or be open to other ideas.

  • paul

    All about the Pack….

How big is your t.v.? I am feeling inadequate now. I know there is a 73 incher out there which will be my next purchase. Maybe overcompensating for something else, eh? Talk to ya later, Go Pack

PS I noticed you did not invite me to Texas to see your bigger one. (smile)

  • Roy Jamison

Still wonders why we can’t find an adequate TE like the NY Giants have. Since Chmura and Jackson, it’s been pitiful. The trade of KC’s Gonzalez would have been a nice move for a couple of years, but its strange that there are not competent TEs they could find in the draft. One such player may be Paul Coffman’s son the TE at Missouri.

  • Larry

He is probably on the roster now. BUBBA 6-6 252 4.66, athletic, goes to seam and agile cuts. FINLEY 6-5 247 4.76, athletic, can run routes and leaps in the EZ. Finley, in my opinion only lacks maturity since he is only 21.

  • AllAboutThePack

HA! Paul, there’s nothing to see in Texas, well at least not in the DFW area. The TV is one of those 61′ Samsung DLP’s – love the HD stuff on that bad boy.

Matt, as long as you agree to disagree I think the debates can be fun and healthy mostly cause we know there’s no winning the debates about the past since we really can’t change it. I’m cool with that kind of banter. And I also realize that it’s much like politics, not everyone is cool with the new president so why should everyone be cool with our GM?

Changing gears, has anyone heard whether the Williams boys will actually be playing this weekend? I thought I heard they were possibly going to be under suspension this week due to the drug charges or whatever their involvement was in drugs.

  • AllAboutThePack

Looks like Jared Allen, the league’s highest paid Defensive player, is out this week with a level 3 sprain in his shoulder – maybe we should all send him a get well card and some flowers…

  • Larry

+Latest I heard is that they both play because the league has 5 or 6 to deal with and cant get it done by the week-end.

  • Matt Hayton

Yep, I heard the same thing Larry…The cheaters get to play for another week.

Paul- 27″ Panasonic out here in Seattle…no reason to over compensate, here.

AATP – I agree, to disagree…and at the end of the day. I think TT is a better than average GM, top 10 in the league, but there’s a difference between being good and great in my book. Basically, I disagree with him on 2 fronts: one is obvious, and I won’t go there. Secondly, don’t get why he can’t compliment his excellent drafting with some suitable vets…DE, TE, or OL…I’m not asking him to be irresponsible…but I don’t think that a superbowl winning team can be built 100% through the draft…if he’d just open up the frickin’ piggy bank this offseason, his approval rating would soar in my book.

  • Matt Hayton

Being my own counterpoint. I actually think they cut KGB and resigned AR– using about all of their $20 million in this years cap, to free up cap space in next years cap, so that they can be in a good position to resign Nick Collins, Tramon Williams and Jennings during the offseason…and to make one or two moves in FA…to really be in a position the next 2 or 3 years to make a run at a championship…atleast that is what I read into the KGB move

  • Reid

Does anyone remember a few years ago in the baggie-dome, we were tied (I think) and driving at the end and needed a few yards for a field goal. Favre hard counted and the Vikes defense totally showed their hand, he looked to the right at a receiver (dare I say Javon Walker) with that “We know what they’re doing look” and they hiked the ball, completed the pass and ran it down inside the 10 yard line, kicked the field goal and won? When was that? That game was freaking awesome.

  • Reid

There’s only one solution to the problem with the Green Bay Packers:

    http://nicedeb.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/chuck_norris.jpg
