Pin these two losses on the coach

If the Green Bay Packers are going to turn their season around against the Chicago Bears this weekend, it will have to start with the head coach. For whatever reason, Mike McCarthy has once again abandoned the running game even though it has been successful the last two weeks. When the Packers were winning two-in-a-row over the Seahawks and Colts, they grinded Ryan Grant over 30 times a game even though Grant only averaged about three yards a carry. The last two weeks Grant averaged 4.5 and 4.7 yards per carry yet only touched the ball 36 times total. What the hell?

Sunday against the Vikings was a joke. Aaron Rodgers is getting killed by Vikings every drop back and Grant is busting 10-yard gains left and right, let’s see, what would you do? What better way to stop the pressure on a quarterback than to gash them on the ground? By refusing to run McCarthy takes the play-action out of his arsenal leaving no guessing whatsoever. Of course, when you go empty backfield on every third or fourth-and-one, what guessing is there to do anyway. I guess.

The Packers’ defensive line couldn’t stop a high-school running back and when you are playing Adrian Peterson, you might want to try and keep him off the field with a ground-control offense. But nooooo! McCarthy goes five-wide or empty backfield half the time and doesn’t adjust to the Vikings rush in any way shape or form. What happened to the tight end in the backfield for protection play? I think Sunday was the worst coaching performance of McCarthy’s three years as coach. It was pitiful and the icing on the cake was challenging the Vikings game-winning touchdown. Coupled with Will Blackmon catching a punt while in the endzone, I think I saw two of the worst decisions in the history of the NFL. Sure would have been nice to have that timeout prior to Mason Crosby’s game-winning kick. Instead of having to rush him out there to kick a 52-yarder, they could have called time out. Crosby would have time to calm the butterflies and considering the Vikings didn’t have a timeout, he knew they wouldn’t call one at the last second. But noooo! Out rushes Crosby, wide right.

And as Pete pointed out in the comments, when Rodgers does throw, it is time to go back to what was working early in the season and let Rodgers throw the ball downfield. There was a time when Greg Jennings led the NFL in receiving yardage. If Jennings can’t beat the double-team, then that’s another story, but I don’t think that is the case. here. Against the Titans Rodgers had some nice plays throwing downfield after breaking the pocket and throwing on the run. Rodgers’ strength is not the quick slant like it was for the previous quarterback. Just get the running game going and use those talented receivers the way they should and the Packers’ offense would be unstoppable.

McCarthy also needs to lay down the law with the defensive coordinator. Bob Sanders’ defense is not showing any signs of improvement or any kind of adjustments, just more of the same “gap control” bovine excrement. I don’t care who you have for players, and I don’t think the talent is that bad, you have to get better play than the Packers have gotten from their defense the last two weeks, and mostly that means run defense. You read about how the Bears shut down the Titans running game yesterday by strategically placing eight men in the box you wonder why the Packers can’t make adjustments like that. Yes the Bears lost, but with the cornerbacks the Packers have they could keep the Titans’ receivers in check much more so than the Bears, still with Rex Grossman at quarterback the Bears only lost 21-14. I remember former Packers’ defensive coordinator Fritz Shurmur doing a lot more with a lot less.

If you don’t think the coach makes that big of a difference look no further than one of the teams the Packers lost to you this year – the Atlanta Falcons. Other than the rookie QB, the coach was the big change and look at the results. Going into the season I thought the Packers had one of the up-and-coming coaches in the NFL, I’m not saying that isn’t true after nine tough games, well, seven anyway, but I’m seeing some of the same stubbornness that doomed Mike Sherman in the end. Let’s hope it is just growing pains associated with the tremendous pressure placed him this season, not only does he have to win the Super Bowl, but he has to do it with a first-year starter at quarterback. Good luck with that, and welcome to the NFL.

I do have confidence in McCarthy to get this turned around, but has he wasted too much time already? Only the next seven weeks will tell. A loss to the Bears Sunday in Lambeau would really give the naysayers strength. This week I will withhold my prediction for a few days. And for the record, Derrick Frost might be the worst punter in the history of the league to ever actually hold a job for as many games as he has. The guy is an absolute joke and if special teams coordinator Mike Stock wanted him you really have to wonder about him, not to mention Ted Thompson’s decision to give in. I’d like to know the real story behind that horrible decision. I would fire Frost and Stock if I could.

    Favre= 1,2,3 throw
    Rodgers= 1,2,3,4,5,6, sack, safety, etc.

Favre was hitting his receivers even when covered last night with his rocket arm. It seems as if Rodgers’ guy has to be wide open. Watching Farve again last night reminded me why he is a HOF’er and MVP X 3 almost 4, multi-time probowler, etc. The defense would not be so bad if Favre was back because the opposing team would be fighting from behind. Also, our defense would not be on the field most of the game. AND, the leadership was vintage Favre. He looks as good as he did in his 5th season. DAMMIT. He never gives the offensive line time to look bad. Bottom line, Favre affects a time in so many ways, statistics cannot explain…you just have to look for it and see it. Packers would be 8-1 with Favre now…no doubt.

  • Reid

Folks – this is never going to end is it? If Favre was here, if Favre was our QB, Favre this, Favre that, da, da, da, da, da. Favre doesn’t play for GB any more and he never will again. Please move on.

On that note, I would also like to say that I give up on this blog site. I’m going to read the article links and that’s it. I’ll even read the ones about Favre because I love the guy, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that he’s not our QB any more.

Now, I think I’ll go open a cold one and put on my Favre jersey, the Packers one of course.

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

Reid, I don’t blame you. Thanks for your contributions. I don’t even want to write anymore. If I even hint at Favre I’m a hater, it’s ridiculous. Why we can’t focus on this year’s team is beyond me. I have brought up Favre when talking about Rodgers, that’s part of football talk, like Ryan Grant compared to Ahman Green. But I would never post Jets stats on a Packers’ site and expect to get away with it. I’ll probably keep posting, I bleed Green & Gold. People just need to learn how to take the good with the bad. For some that is apparently easier said than done.

  • RayL

REID – excellent point about Keeping BF as the starter and getting AR some playing time, 1st draft pick a need instead of a WR, 2nd draft pick a need instead of a QB. A coupple of moves in Free agency and we are the favorite to win the SB. PERIOD!! That’s a no brainer! TT simply doesn’t have the vision to do what is needed. He was let his ego get in the way. This situation “should” have been handled like that. We would be 7-2 or 8-1.

  • RayL

By the way. Dustin Keller was selected by the Jets with the 30th Overall Pick which we traded to them.

  • Matt Hayton

Nice point, RayL – Ironic isn’t it…I remember around draft day that I was hoping the Packers would select Keller. Man this offense could sure use a TE.

  • RayL

All these excuses for TT and AR are really sickenening. I have heard…..It’s not AR’s fault….it’s the O-Line. It’s this, it’s that, it’s everyone elses fault excpet AR. The team was ready according to MM and TT. Remember the train leaving the station?

1 question for all you Kool-aid drinkers……if the packers were 4-5 with BF, would it be his fault? would you all be calling for him to retire? would you be chanting for AR? I think we all know the answer to that question.

  • RayL

I think I finally understand what the problem is…..”Our pad level is too low” thats MM’s standard answer for “We got dominated in the trenches” and we should have signed Faneca.

  • Matt Hayton

    Admin Al-
I will respond to your request…I agree we should move on, but it’s just tough when you bleed green and gold to see a game like that last night and not talk about it…anyways, back to this year…

Whole season comes down to the Bears on Sunday. We’ve got to figure out a way to slow down Forte. And I still think we need to open up our running game via the pass. It didn’t work last week, but I don’t think we are built to go an man-handle an opposing D-Line as good as the Bears, need to have them play us honest and start dropping the safeties back into coverage, before we can run the ball. I also think Chillar has a big assignment against Olsen, I think the Bears view that as a mismatch and they will try to exploit that.

  • Matt Hayton

RayL – that last point is the last nail in the coffin… That’s exactly right…if the Packers had kept Favre, the MMARTT lovers would ABSO-FRICKIN-LUTELY be calling for #4′s head on a platter- blaming every loss on his shoulders alone. As they should, why because there is nothing different from this team and last years. Case closed.

  • RayL

MATT – We could have picked Keller, but instead TT look at the TE he picked. Read below. He took a 3rd year Sophmore.

Pick Analysis: Finley has a lot of potential, but is somewhat immature and needs time to develop. He was an outstanding basketball player in high school and there is a tradition of tight ends with a basketball past becoming great players in the NFL.

It took the Longhorns coaching staff and even Jermichael Finley’s teammates by surprise when the third-year sophomore announced after the 2007 season that he was leaving school for a chance to play in the National Football League in 2008. While he is one of the more athletic players at his position, the league’s advisory board told Finley he projected as a fourth-round pick.

Based on his performance at the Combine, Finley is likely to fit in the back half of the draft.

  • RayL

MATT – did you have to remind me about OLSEN we drafted JH over OLSEN!!!

  • Roy Jamison

How many 39 year old qbs have gone to the Super Bowl?

  • RayL

ROY – We may never know because of TT’s ego. But maybe we will, I sure am pulling for #4.

  • Roy Jamison

How come uncle Bob didn’t pick Mike Reinfeldt to succeed him?

  • Roy Jamison

Defensive tackle Justin Harrell suffered a sprained knee in practice Thursday and was added to the injury report as questionable after sitting out Friday’s workout.

Injuries just seem to be like a magnetic force for this guy don’t they?

  • paul

    Roy Jamison,

No 39 year old is like Favre present/past. Don’t compare him to other washed up 39 year olds. He can outplay most 29 year old QBs and you know it. NEVER MISSED A GAME. ONE LOSING SEASON in 15 years. Yada, yada, yada.

  • RayL

Justin Harrell hurt? wow can’t believe it….he’s such an iron man.

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

    I can’t believe this…

  • Matt Hayton

Just saw on NFL Network that the Packers 6 defensive TDs this season is a franchise record…so NO QB in Packer history has had this much defensive scoring assistance ever…Wow!

  • Matt Hayton

    what can’t you believe?

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

    Just try me…

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

    What are you waiting for?

  • Matt Hayton

RayL – TT sucks, too busy trying to look like a genius instead of just getting good players in round 1.

  • Matt Hayton

    ok…I try you…

  • Matt Hayton

you can’t believe folks talking up Lord Favre or what?

  • Devil’s Advocate…

What Super Bowl are we on now??????? 42 or 43 maybe???? We have what, 3 of them…………….. Seems we have a certain group, having crazy fun tonight!!!! I ask, what the hell did we do wrong the other 40 seasons??????????? Ya’all wanna start from SB season three, seems you’ve got the answers this year. Damn, I was just happy to see Kampman get a hands to the facemask call last week finally…………. Watched the other night as Moss played basketball in the endzone for overtime. Didn’t even run a route, ran to the endzone, stood there and shielded a little and caught. And now we’re back to the Favre thing, yet again…… great , he wins the SB, your all right!!! Can’t argue w/that, though I imagine some of you will argue why he didn’t, if he doesn’t…. I have to give some thought to the Favre thing myself……………………………….. Seems to be a little better team w/him. Would he have won the SB w/the Pack this year, who knows.

  • Larry

Takes more than a QB. We didn’t get there until Reggie. Isn’t this somewhat akin to SF Montana/Young? SF had one WR and a TE, we have (3) Wides. They worked thru it we will too.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Ya’all realize that if Lord Favre comes through, we’ll be picking 4 of the best 60 players available in next year’s draft (Pack’s 1st and 2nd plus Jets and Browns 2nd). Not quite the great deal the Vikes gave the Cowgirls in the trade for Herchel Walker (or Allen to KC, two firsts?……+) but still, if TT hits on these, he’s got a team to be reckoned with. The girls made out quite well on that one. That helped them “big time” for those three SB’s!!!! I’d settle for a couple SUPERBOWLS!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’d put us at five!!! + how many NFL CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Devil’s Advocate…

PISS AND MOAN about what could have been this year, but w/a young team and add four good players plus (rounds 3-7), the future looks bright!!! I want a dynasty!!!!

  • TRIP

I live in Philadelphia and I know guys that are STILL pissed that the Eagles let Randall Cunningham go. I know I’m very frustrated, but this is nothing new. I don’t want to have a tender moment, but a lot of my frustration stems from the fact that I think that people like Al and others really went far out of their way to devalue what Favre brought to this football team. Al just mentioned taking the good with the bad (in reference to our badly performing team) but never seemed to use the same philosophy with evaluating Favre. Interesting… It wasn’t a good off-season for us Packer fans, but I was shocked to see the Favre-hatred at the extent it was demonstrated on this site.

  • CheesyD

Favre wanted to be a Viking. The Packers arch enemy. So many here seem to conveniently overlook that fact. He spit directly into the faces of the fans and the sheep here just lap it up off their faces and beg for more. Pathetic. For me, it is unforgivable.

  • RayL

CHeesyD – if the Mgmt treated you the way T treated BF, you would want to beat him every chance you got and with that, make him look bad. I don’t blame BF for wanting to play for the Vikings. He was run out by TT, who doesn’t deserve to be called a Packer or even be associated with this great organization. SO many of you TT Kool-aid drinkers are too blind to see what actually took place and the hate that TT has for BF. If you want to be truthful about the situation TT ran BF out by the draft choices he made nad the apathy in Free agebcy. Not resigning his two interior guards and allowing him to play with questionable rookie/young guards for his remaining years as a Packer sends a message to BF “TT doesn’t care and he hopes BF gets hurt” No other explanation is good enough. He set BF up for failure and he never dreamed that BF would lead the pack to a 13-3 season. TT is a back-stabbing, two-faced, politician and the devil in disguise. IMO!

  • Larry

DA to further bolster your argument: Remember the bashing TT got for the Jordy Nelson pick. Well, we’re not winnng like we would like but its sure not because we had JN available to come in for Jones when he went down. Also, JN has given new life to the return game.

  • CheesyD

RayL – are you on crack? Thompson wanted to get Favre hurt? LOL! If you will set aside your very convenient memory and realize that Favre retired… more than once. The Packers wanted him back but Favre retired. Three times Favre had an opportunity to come back and said he was retired. The Packers had NO CHOICE but to move on. The Favre has a change of heart, well into preparations for the new season already underway (draft picks made, offense designed around A-Rod, etc.) and Favre has the gall to demand to come back and have the team throw everything out just because of him. Then he cries like the baby he is and says he wants to be a Viking, knowing full well the hatred of the Vikings by the Packer faithful. That my friend, is putting himself way above the team and the fans. Give me A-Rods character any day of the week of that self-loving, me first, crybaby Favre. You can drool at the thought of carrying Favre’s jockstrap all you want. He sold out the Packers and the fans long ago. Why people like you can’t see that is beyond me.

  • paul

    CheesyD,

If TT treated me like he did BF, I would try to F#$k his girlfriend. That is why Farve wanted to play for the Queens. However, with TT, who knows, one may have to F@$K his boyfriend. (not that there is anything wrong with that)….old Seinfeld reference..

  • Larry

Ironic! Must gall a TT basher that every J-E-T-S win makes TED THOMPSON look smarter. If he didn’t have an ego he at least deserves a smirk.

  • CheesyD

    Paul,

Yeah, asking Favre to come back only to be told “No, I’m retired”, three times. How dare Ted Thompson then make plans to play the season without Favre! He should have known Favre would come back if asked a fourth time! The nerve of Ted Thomson!

    Sheesh.

  • RayL

Yeah flying down to MS to tell BF that he was going to send him his locker was really smooth, and bribing him with $20M to stay retired Nice way to spend the money on the future of the Pack. If he would have spent some of that $20M doing his JOB BF would have played a couple of more years. ANd this BOGUS argument that the packers have made all of these off season adjustments to gear toward AR, and it would be too late for them to change it back for BF is totally ridiculous and silly for anyone to believe that. The Jets had no problem doing just that and knowing that adjustment period would be much more difficult to learn a new system and for BF to build chemistry with the receivers, etc, so go sniff TT’s panties of you like…whiloe he destroys this team!

  • RayL

I don’t beleive that TT ever asked BF to come abck. Where did you get that information?

  • Matt Hayton

    Okay Cheesy-
Tell me which moves TT has made over his 4 years as GM to try and attempt to keep BF around and win a championship with HIM? He has been rebuilding instead of reloading, period. And everyone knows it.

  • CheesyD

On the night of March 27, Favre told McCarthy that he wanted to return. McCarthy then arranged for a private jet that would take him and Packers general manager Ted Thompson from the NFL owners meeting in Palm Beach, Fla., to Hattiesburg, Miss., for an April 1 meeting with Favre to finalize the deal.

“He mentioned several things where you could tell there’s always indecisiveness,” Thompson said. “He’s wondering if he made the right decision. I think that’s normal.”

But less than 48 hours later, Favre called McCarthy to say he would remain retired after discussing the situation extensively with wife Deanna. “Closure” was even a term Favre used in his conversation with McCarthy, a source said.

“He said he appreciated all the planning we were going to do,” McCarthy said. “But he felt that at this point, he had reached a point of closure, to use his words, and he was going to stick with his initial decision.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/8339456

    He’s created this mess himself.

As angry as Favre seems any time he talks about the Packers’ unwillingness to welcome him back to their family, he seems to keep forgetting that he’s the one who abandoned them in the first place. He walked away when they likely would’ve kept him. He’s the one who didn’t tell them he was coming back until just a few weeks ago.

And what did he expect? He is Brett Favre, after all. Green Bay legend. So he expected they’d dance with joy, throw money in the air and roll out the red carpet for his return. But how are the Packers supposed to do that when they’ve spent the offseason planning for life without him. Every move they made — personnel, salary cap, preparation — was made with quarterback Aaron Rodgers in mind.

And now Favre wants them to let him come back and push the 24-year-old Rodgers aside? Or, better yet, he wants them to release him so he can go play for the Minnesota Vikings, who just happen to be scheduled to play at Lambeau Field on opening day?

    http://www.athlonsports.com/pro-football/14085/vacchiano-favre-created-his-own-mess

This talk about retirement did not just start in March of 2008. It was about four years ago, when Favre first introduced the idea that he was thinking about retirement. During THAT post season, and during each post season SINCE then, Favre has held out with his decision until the VERY LAST SECOND –keeping both the fans and management in limbo, all along. Not only did he fiddle with the heart strings of the Packer fans during that time –but he also placed the team in a difficult situation each season, when it came to the NFL draft. –”Do we need to draft a quarterback, or address other needs?” That was the question that management had to face each season; and judging by his actions, Brett Favre could have cared less. We then drafted two QBs –and Favre responds by trying to un-retire? That is unacceptable!

    http://uradufuss.blogs.sportsline.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6181208/9700775

  • RayL

    Right on MattH!

He could have built a dynasty, very easily with a few moves, but he was too focused on running BF out of town.

  • RayL

They never had to plan the draft arounf BF! They drafted his successor in TT’s 1st draft, with the 1st round pick. When he should have been drafting BF some help. TT has had it out for #4 from day 1. TT’s apathy has proved that. IMO – BF felt it and that’s one of the reasons why he struggled with retirement each year. TT is a piece of dog squeeze!

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Losing Favre was not a good thing. While not bringing many SB trophies home, he helped keep the team winning consistantly, he brought little Green Bay national attention which marketing-wise was huge, dare say I maybe the Pack received a few more favorable calls during games. His excitement seems to be missed this year. On the other side, you hate to lose your QB of the future for a year or two w/Favre. No player is going to wait forever. Tough situation……… hardly think anyone could hate Favre, but he doesn’t deserve the praise of 3 time SB champions.

  • RayL

BF watched another off season go by with no significant move…only to wait for the draft which will in all likelyhod result in more head scratching picks that will not help the team NOW. WHy wouldn’t he be discouraged and fed-up? HUH ?? Were you? I know I was!

He signed Frank Walker and Brandon CHillar in Free agency the last 2 years. What does that tell you? If I were # 4 it would be crystal clear.

The drafting of Brohm and Flynn in the draft were nothing more than a statement from TT – a slap in the face if you will. I can’t wait for the day that he gets fired! It’s coming……

  • CheesyD

Brohm and Flynn were drafted because Favre had RETIRED. Good god man, use your friggin brain for a change. Go put on the Viking purple like Favre wanted to do.

  • Michael Legat

Agreed. Ray L, your last statement is dumb beyond words.

  • Michael Legat

The statement by TT was that we need more than one quarterback on the roster. Once again, everybody is enjoying this way too much.
