Packers-Bears game blog

11:55 AM: The only thing I’m predicting today is the game starts in about five minutes. Go Pack!

12:10 PM: One thing still hasn’t changed. The Packers are the most undisciplined team regarding penalties in the NFL. A holding penalty on Donald Driver and a false start on Jason Spitz. Great start gentleman.

12:19 PM: Well, the defense only gave up one third-and-long, Bears actually had to punt. Let’s go now.

12:29 PM: Packers take the early leaad, 7-0. Nice little drive there. Rodgers off to a 7 for 7 start for 71 yards and a TD. But the best thing is the Packers being able to run the ball so far. Grant already has 55 yards. Too bad the defense looks about the same, bad. Some way, some how they have to turn things around. Very little resistance whatsoever.

12:40 PM: Looks like a shootout coming. The defense is again a no-show.

12:58 PM: Horrible play by Rodgers underthrowing a wide open Driver when Driver had coverage by Brian Urlacher. Terrible play and the Bears are fired up.

1:14 PM: The Packers new power-rushing game is taking control. Ryan Grant is back to Ryan Grant and the Packers lead 14-3. A long way to go but I am shocked. Although, the Bears still have a minute to go and the Packers had to take a timeout before the Bears even run a play because they forgot to put 11 guys on the field. Amazing. Things like that are inexcusable.

1:47 PM: Big stop by the Packers on the Bears opening drive of the second half. See if the offense can keep the running game going now.

1:52 PM: Offense couldn’t keep up its end of the bargain and the Packers have to punt. The offense can’t afford to that again. Asking the Packers’ defense to win a game is asking for quite a lot.

1:56 PM: Just one drive without a penalty. Is that too much to ask for? The Bears on the move.

2:09 PM: One very nice drive by the Packers and it is 24-3. What a great game by the offense. 354 yards in three quarters of play. Nice to have Ryan Grant back to full speed.

2:38 PM: If you only win two games a year, it better be against the Bears. How sweet it is.

Running the ball on the vaunted Bears! YEAH!!!!
O-line, I’ve been crankin’ on you all year – make me eat my words! YEAH!!!!

3 penalties already, but at least Frost finally did what he was brought in to do.

  • dd

they are going to half to stop with all the penalties

  • Jeff

Pass protection looks vastly better than in weeks past. If the offense can stay balanced and O-line can keep this up, we could run away with this one.

  • dd

    lets hope so

  • Jeff

Defense shows up and covers Rodgers. Run, Grant – all day long! Defense will always look a lot better when O controls the ball like that.

The touchdown run was just plain dominant. Yeah. That’s what I’m talking about.

First half they’re looking good – could this be an identity? Could this be an attitude adjustment I’m seeing right here before my eyes?

  • AllAboutThePack

Nice Defensive stand out of the box in the second half… I like to see the Bears punting… and punting… and punting… Go Pack!!

  • TRIP

My expectations are so low, I feel like we winning the SB!

  • AllAboutThePack

Haha… well TRIP, there’s still a lot of game left here…

  • AllAboutThePack

HOLY CRAP!!! They actually dialed up a REAL blitz…

  • AllAboutThePack

And then gave them the first down on two stupid penalties on the same play..

  • Dan

One thing is obvious from this game. McCarthy is finally listening to us.

Running the ball and rolling out Rodgers. Hopefully McCarthy burned the game plan he used the previous few weeks.

With the Packers remaining schedule, this division should belong to the Pack!!!

The Bears really suck!!! Vikings will fold like they always do!!!

  • AllAboutThePack

I’m with you on that one Dan… All we can do is hope this is the team we get for the rest of the season…

  • Dan

Bears are done, stick a fork in them.

    Remaining schedule for the Packers
Teams with a winning record: Panthers
Teams with a .500 record: Bears (still have no QB), Saints??? (guessing they will beat the Chiefs today).
Teams with a losing record: Jaguars, Texans, and Lions

Look out New Orleans, the Pack is back!!!

  • Dan

    It’s time for another homebrew.

Beer always tastes better when the Packers whip the Bears.

  • CheesyD

Good all around team effort by the Packers today. That’s what we need the rest of the way. Great job by the offensive line and by AJ Hawk. A-Rod had the one bad throw on the INT but other than that was very solid and managed the game well.

Vikes and Bears lose and the Pack wins. Doesn’t get much better than that.

First win by the Packers over Lovie Smith at Lambeau. Good job A-Rod. Brett couldn’t get that done.

  • cali cheeez

Great game!!! O-line did an awesome job,we finally spread the ball around. Even J Finley caught a ball. Just opened up a BIG OL’ CAN OF WOOP ASS ALL OVER THEM bears!!! GO PACK GO

  • zach

Lol. Just got home from the game. Second row behind the packers bench. Can’t beat a day like this…….go pack.

  • Tom

Is it my imagination or have the packers gotten rid of that crap zone/chop blocking scheme that never worked?

  • Matt Hayton

This win goes to the O-Line, D-Line, Head Coach, Secondary, WRs, Grant…everything but the QB, becuase Lord knows he hasn’t been at fault for any of their losses this year, so he ceratinly can’t be responsible for a nice dominating win. AR had nothing to do with winning or losing this football game! Could’ve won with anybody out there.

…Now doesn’t that just sound stupid? It sounds just as stupid when all of you nobs make excuses for the guy when they lose.

OF COURSE AR WAS A HUGE REASON WHY WE WON THIS FOOTBALL GAME!

Great, Dominating Performance by the entire team, including #12 who led the charge. Hats off to AR, hope for more of the same and Hawk sure looked like a beast out there.

Why is it that all you folks have such a hard of a time blaming AR when we lose, it co both ways. He played a great game…l,ooked the part and scored TD’s instead of FG’s! Great job!

  • RayL

Very impressive win for the whole team! Hats off to AR. The Line dominated on both sides of the ball. With the exception of the early penalties…. very solid and well played game, I hope we see more of what we saw today.

Don’t forget the play calling. I love the fullback up the gut a couple of times and the delayed runs out of the tight end in the backfield formation. The later is one of the formations that was so successful the last couple of years. Some good passes also out of that formation. Good to see it back in the rotation.

  • TRIP

    CheesyD is quite the spectacle.

  • Larry

Wow! Statement made; shows what this teams potential is. We now own all the tie breakers in our division given at the worst a standings tie at the end. Given da bearse and Vikes schedules this is entirely possible. The team has played three tough games in a row and come away with a 1-2 record. However, today shows what we can do when healthy and relatively error free. Does anybody want to put Hawk outside, or Colledge on the right side, or let AR only rollout to the right again? How about getting the TEs more involved? A TE in the backfield to block? That is coaching adjustments the kind of which we have been asking for! A bunch of little things that turn out huge like Jordy blocking downfield and Woodson’s blitz. Sure made a difference in team spirit that came thru the TV to me. A long way to go but it makes me feel a lot better. I guess that need not be said.

  • Pete H

Where the hell has that been? amazing what a little imagination can do. They used blitzes, ran both inside and out, threw to everyone short and deep. Imagine that, if you don’t run the same set of four plays on both offense and defense, the other team doesn’t know whats coming…….I still can’t believe that I am seeing some of you here talking about a statement made, or that the division is ours. This is still one game. They did the same thing against the Colts, and then crapped themselves for two weeks. There needs to be consistency. Here’s what I don’t get. Why does it take an injury for this team to blitz to get pressure? When Harris and Bigby were odown, they used alot more blitzes, and were successful. They both came back, it stopped. Barnett goes down, blitzes…success….good thing he’s done for the year. Also, can we please now stop with the Tony Gonzalez man crush now? Maybe after thise game you realize that it isn’t that the tight ends are bad, its that they didn’t use them inthat vanilla crap they had been playing. Nice Red zone play calling……still struggled against the run. They have to be better there…..upcoming games……Car. Williams, Stewart…..Jax, Taylor, Jones Drew….Hou. Slaton….

  • http://www.themissingrocks.com Tom from Delaware

They creamed the Colts, then played handely against the Titans, crapped themselves over the Metrodome. Hopefully the crapping is done.

  • iccyfan

This is exciting as they finally played the excellent all-around game many of us thought they were capable of. Let’s hope they can find the consistency we long for and make a strong end of season run.

  • Dan

I think the Packers have had this in them for most of the season. The two biggest factors in their loses have been giving up on the run (Grant averaged just under 5 yard per carry against the Vikings) and penalties.

Both come down to coaching. Coach McCarthy did a great job getting the team ready this week. Remember, MM’s only a third year head coach. He’s still learning and improving. This week he clearly aced his exam. The great ones put their players in position to succeed each week. One thing is clear, the Packers have the talent to be a top team. Looking forward to seeing this team finish the season.

  • paul

Now a good team will show some consistency. I love the win but if they lay an egg next week, it will remind me of the Packers of the 70′s, 80′s. I have reserved optimism as this is how 8-8 teams play. Great game, close game, lay an egg. I do not want to see another egg this year.

  • Oconomowockid

Great win for the Pack!! Nice overall team effort. This could be the type of win that could turn the year around. This was a do or die game. We should win this division if we can get some consistency.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Paul were in such a bad division 9-7 could do it especially if we beat the Bears in Chicago. Great playcalling. Hawk is an upgrade and Chillar makes TT look very good. I thought the O-line would improve this year, even with Wells hurt, and was disappointed. Who knows, maybe they’re finally in synch. A much better passing attack in N.O., if we get pressure on Brees and keep the ball out of his hands we’ll win. It should be exciting.

  • iccyfan

There’s still room for improvement on the “penalties” front, as the Packers carded 6 for 55 yards. Luckily for us, they weren’t of the drive killing variety this week.

For the season the Packers have 78 penalties (#2) for 710 yards (#1). #2 in the penalties “lost yardage” category is SF, with (77 for) 593 yards. #31 in both categories is New England, with 31 penalties for 308 yards.

In short, we’re losing nearly 12 yards / game more than the second worst team in the category, and a whopping 40 yards / game more than New England. I know you can’t quantify that in points, but for argument sake estimate a minimum of 7 / game taken off the board. Cut that in half and we’d probably have a two – three game improvement in the win column.

P.S. I know the Raiders were the most penalized team in the league back in their glory days; just trying to introduce a new topic to the conversation! :)

  • Roy Jamison

Wonder if Barnett had been hurt all year prior to knee injury. Nice to see a running game. Only 6 games to playoffs!

  • Pete H

What is the point of squeaking out a 9-7 ugly division win? I don’t want to see some up and down who knows factory that falls backward into a division title. We have seen that this team can play with, and in many cases, take it to anyone in the league. That will make a 9-7 sloppy finish all the more agonizing. I also don’t care that they played handely against the Titans, they eventually crapped themselves in the 4th and lost. The Pack aren’t going to run away and hide from teams in the playoffs like yesterday. They need to win games like Tenn. They should win games like Tenn. Full props to MM yesterday, but yes, the penalties are still an issue, as is the run defense.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

I was thinking at the half, “watch Crosby make this one, and it won’t factor into the game” cause at that point, it felt to me like the Pack’s day. If he missed yesterday’s and made the Viking game’s kick, the Pack would be alone in first place. Timing is important….. Didn’t miss Barnett, he’s looked bad all year. I thought they should haved replaced him for a game w/Hodge way back when…… of course I find out a few weeks back that Hodge had been released. Still some room for improvement, Grant needs to do better staying on his feet and making people miss. They could use more yardage from their dump-offs. O-line stepped up. D needs to improve tackling yet. blah, blah, blah

  • JeffN

This win goes to the whole team. Everyone played well. It was a team effort. You don’t need to give all the credit to 1 or 2 individuals for a win.

This is what I want to see more of from the Pack this season.

  • TRIP

Great things in the running game, but they have to be consistent. And went Grant can’t run for 140-some yards, he needs to get around 90 hard-fought yards.

    Pete,

I agree that I don’t want to see a 9-7 Packers team get owned in the playoffs, first round or something. But MM needs the opportunity to show he can lead this team in adversity (or will he buckle like Sherman) and he could give AR the opportunity to justify TT’s move. I want to see A-Rod in the big(ger) game.

What if, somehow, the Packers beat the Giants and the Jets, somehow, beat the Titans and we had that showdown in the SuperBowl? Just fantasizing.

  • Larry

Go ahead TRIP fantasize. What the heck, isn’t one of the purposes of this blog to let us coach a bit, if only in our own mind? This sure is a lot more fun to acknowledge that MM is doing what we tell him to do rather than his constantly ignoring all of our great suggestions.

Can we bring back that song, “The Bears still Suck” ?

The Bears Still Suck Polka Song
** Out dated in some ways but still funny…

    The Bears Still Suck Polka
    written by J.Krueger-sung by OTTO
How many times must we take this disgrace
Another Bears fan throwing insults in our face
The Packers are the greatest team to ever play the game
Even if from time to time they’ve been a little lame
How could you ever love a team with Jim McMahon
Not even Porky Pig was as big a ham
They got a reputation that’s mostly based on luck
    The Bears…Still…Suck
The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
They really really really really really really suck
    Yes the Bears…Still…Suck
If you drive to Soldier Field they make you pay a toll
For cripes sake they only won one lousy Super Bowl
They make fun of Wisconsin, but we don’t get upset
Where do you think that they’re all headed every chance they get
We don’t really hold a grudge ’cause this is all in fun
As far as football rivalries we’re both number one
Still we wouldn’t mind seeing Ditka run over by a truck
    ‘Cause the Bears…Still…Suck
The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
They really really really really really really suck
    Yes the Bears…Still…Suck
