Packers-Saints Game Blog

Here we go. I will predict 27-21 Packers.

7:43 PM: One play into the game and I want to punch Tony Kornholio right in the mouth. Take Jon and have a threesome for God’s sakes.

7:45 PM: Typical three-and-out by the offense to start a game on the road. Does not bode well.

7:56 PM: What did bode well was a three-and-out by the Packers’ defense. Set up the Packers for a short field after a good punt return and it is all of a sudden 7-0. Sweet. Another three-and-out by the defense would make a statement. Ryan Grant looked good on the touchdown drive and the Packers should ride their horse. One play looked like a variation of the wildcat with Rodgers flipping the ball back to Grant on the snap, and on the touchdown run they kind of faked the same thing but the other way. I like it.

8:00 PM: The 7-0 lead lasted all of one play. Simply unbelievable. Atari Bigby burned. 7-7. Confidence just took a huge hit.

8:07 PM: The Packers are in big trouble. Three-and-out again, short field for the Saints because of another bad Frost punt. 14-7 in about five minutes folks, that is if the Packers defense steps up and holds them to two or three plays. Not good. Frost is the worst punter in the history of the NFL. I can do what he does.

8:15 PM: The Packers’ defense is getting shredded, going to be a short blog tonight. I guess the Packers thought the Saints were going to grind it out on the ground. Who would have thought they would throw on us? Go figure?

8:26 PM: A nice long drive by the offense tied it up, but the defense is atrocious. The Saints are already at the Packers’ 15 because the Packers can’t stop the pass. Drew Brees is not Kyle Orton. 21-14 Saints. Over and out.

8:48 PM: I would love to punch Tony Kornholio in the mouth, and given the chance, I will. Just get a room and be done with it. Call me the hater, because I hate Tony Kornholio. Punch it in Rodgers just to stick it to this f?ckin’ blowhard.

8:59 PM: The Packers special teams goes to sleep after Rodgers does indeed punch it in by running it and now the Packers are down 24-21 at the end of the half. Good job defense. It is like everything that could go against the Packers is going against the Packers. At least Jaws told Kornholio to shut the f?ck up about Favre. The Packers’ defense better regroup at half because they are getting killed. The Packers’ offense has held the ball for seven minutes more than the Saints and still the defense gave up 24 points. I hope Rodgers can keep up.

9:39 PM: Al Harris said they were the best in the NFL. 31 points in 35 minutes. Oops 38, (thanks to Rodgers), bottom line Al, Saints win, you lose, this game. See you later this week, unless Rodgers pulls off a Frank Reich. Not likely with no defense. See you next year. I certainly don’t have the energy nor inclination to put up with the crap that will come the rest of the year. Win or lose. I guess I wasn’t cut out to be a blogger. See you in January with a recap.

I hoped for the best and got the worst. Oh well. The Packers are still my team and I will be in Lambeau next week cheering them on. Been fun, I guess. See ya.

Wow! Last night brought me back to thinking about last year…I kept on thinking last year that we were a mediocre team that won 4 close games via Favre and Jennings. Last night confirmed this thought in my mind. This has been a mediocre team now for 3-5 years now, which underperformed when it had all those injuries Sherman’s last year and overachieved Favre’s last year.

Our D-Line sucks. Hawk looked like a beast last week, but played slow and missed assignments last night. Chillar could hold a stick to Shockey…D-Line providing no pass rush and LB’s missing assignments and being exploited, was why we couldn’t stop them…

O-Line again was very ordinary…and Rodgers makes 2 bad picks (sorry, the first ball would’ve been intercepted even if Jennings was on his feet, AR never looked the corner off and he had a heckuva break on the ball…didn’t matter that Jennings fell down).

I’d like to point out that AR had a perfect opportunity to have his coming out party last night and he blew it, again. Pack was down 31-21 on the road, if AR drives the team down and scores then to make it 31-28, and wins the game, we’d all be sitting here this morning commenting on how the Anointed One is the next big cheese, but he couldn’t get it done. This could’ve been Rodgers version of Favre’s ’92 Bengals game. But Rodgers has shown a propensity to lose games instead of winning them, en the outcome hangs in the balance. He has not won one game that “he shouldn’t have.” On paper last night, Brees and the Saints “should’ve lost that game”…banged up defense, Packers have the best secondary in the NFL, but somewhere they blew us out. Rodgers couldn’t do to a lessor defense, what Brees did to ours. Sure the Packers defense sucked last night, and you can pin the loss on them, but Rodgers was playing against a far worse Saints defense that was super-banged up by injury and he couldn’t pull it out. Not a good sign, what if that was a good defense last night? Would we have lost 51-7?

I can sum up this game in one sentence.

“The Saints offense is a lot better than our defense, and our offense is better than but not good enough to make up the difference against their defense”

End of discussion. I don’t see what all the talk is about this game. It’s just as simple as I just stated. Now get back to work everyone.

  • Pete H

I think it might be a bit early to say that Rodgers has a “propensity” for anything yet, but you are right about the Jennings pick….thats all Rodgers.

  • Michael Legat

Agreed. I’m reluctant to call Rodgers a liability in any ways that aren’t reasonably expected from an above average NFL QB. He is not Favre, but that second half reminded me of those occasional Favre games where we’d fall behind so quickly that we had no choice but to go one-dimensional just to try to make things happen. Out of fairness, you should probably either excuse both quarterbacks for those performances or excuse both, just for consistency’s sake at least.

This is all on the defense. Until our O was in desperation mode, we were moving the ball extremely well.

  • Michael Legat

Excuse or bang on both, I meant to say.

It isn’t even a comparison…as Trip put it…here is Farve’s resume, many on bad to mediocre teams. Favre was a second year pro and look at his first season. Let’s see the comparison after 15 years of Rodgers’ play!

    1992- 9-7
    1993- 9-7 (won a playoff game)
    1994- 9-7 (won a playoff game)
1995- 11-5 (won two playoff games)
    1996- 13-3 (won a SB)
    1997- 13-3 (won a NFC Championship)
    1998- 11-5 (playoff berth)
    1999- 8-8
    2000- 9-7
    2001- 12-4 (won a playoff game)
    2002- 12-4 (playoff berth)
    2003- 10-6 (won a playoff game)
    2004- 10-6 (playoff berth)
    2005- 4-12
    2006- 8-8
2007- 13-3 (bye and playoff win)

Paul – “Let’s see the comparison after 15 years of Rodgers’ play!” That is by far the most intelligent thing said on this blog this year. Let’s wait 15 years and compare. It is the only fair thing to do. Please post the comparison then. I’ll be here.

No you won’t. Nothing shows we are at that place in development to build a solid team. In 1992 we were DEVELOPING. In 2008, we have a GM that doesn’t believe that we should revamp any area of the team except WR. In 1992, we were on the ASCENT. Now, we are on the DESCENT. TT didn’t realize this would happen, if he did, he would have used some of that cap room to help the OL or special teams. But I’m just SURE that we’ll look back and say yeah, TT was right. All we needed to sustain this team was Jordy Nelson and Justin Harrell. HA!

And nothing that you’ve predicted with this team has turned out right, Al. You are the Ms. Cleo of Packers football? It seems that way. And now of course you want a 15 year grace period to find another excuse for the TT mismanagement!!! We are were highly confident that we’d been back in the hunt. If were weren’t in the NFC North we’d be a game or two from elimination from the playoffs.

    This blows my mind!!!

  • TRIP

After a 13-3 season you have the nerve to try to justify a 1st round pick being more desirable than a shot at the Super Bowl??? What kind of fan ARE you?

  • AATP

Hey TRIP – I wasn’t referencing that Favre was always frustrated, but you could see the frustration on his face the 4-12 year and he was tossing the ball up into coverage like a free for all that year. He was visibly frustrated with the way the team was headed. The 8-8 season of 2006 there were times you could see on his face that he just wanted to take cover. Both those years he was also having issues with management according to some articles I’ve read. So his frustration was not only with the team but also with the management of the team. And you could see it in his face when the losses were coming. So basically it was those two years 2005 and 2006 to which I was referring.

I like what Paul said about giving Rodgers 15 years to see what he can or can’t do. One year certainly can’t and won’t equal a 15 year career. But in 15 years I think we all have the right to judge this new QB and stack him up against the HOF’er he replaced.

  • AATP

TRIP, I don’t think we’d be headed any closer to the super bowl then we are now… but then again it’s all speculation and really has no place in conversation for this season. As pissed as Favre was you really think he was going to be focused on a SB with this team? You really think he was going to overlook the issues he had with teh management and take one for the Gipper? Bullsh&t… He would have played half-assed and that’s why he decided to go to a team he really didn’t care about either way. Turns out it may work out for the best for his new team and for our team in the future. Like I said earlier, TT will be judged come the end of this season and if ol’ BF gets to the SB and the Packers continue to fail miserably, we get a first round pick and the possibility that TT looks for a life preserver to float on outta town. Then again, maybe not, maybe TT sticks around for another year and we’ll be right back on here pissed and wanting his head on a stake – but we’ll still be hoping this team wins regardless of whether BF retires after this season or not.

  • AATP

To be clear – given the choice between TT or BF? I’d a taken BF, but that wasn’t one of the choices and popularity votes didn’t count. So it is what it is at this point. I’m sick of mediocre as well and I’m perplexed that we fell apart that bad in the second half. It appears that New Orleans adjusted and we didn’t. Then, on top of that, our Special Teams couldn’t stop their returner and our punter couldn’t kick his way out of wet paper sack.

I like Aaron Rodgers – I think once this team gets some OL folks up front and we get some DLs we should be fine, but if the Albino Barn Owl decides to draft nothing but receivers and/or running backs in the first two rounds I’ll be convinced that TT has no interest in saving his QB’s life or helping the defensive line out.

  • TRIP

I like Aaron too, for 2009.

Anyways, a first round pick, if the Jets go all the way, still doesn’t signal a win for us. All we’ll do is trade down and get a Brohm, a Nelson (when we don’t need him), or stay in the 1st round and get the jackpot, a Harrell.

    Please help me, someone!

  • Michael Legat

Would you like an anti-psychotic prescription, TRIP? Would that help?

I don’t know what happened, but you’ve turned hysterical in the last 24 hours, assigning this awful, awful loss way more implications than it warrants. This is not the end of Packer football.

  • gopackgo

You are right its not the end of Packer football but it sure seems like this is a team on the decline if they don’t get better offensive and defensive linemen. The Pack has weapons on offense and defense in skill positions but not a lot of meat and power on the lines. This needs improved if the Pack are too improve at all next year.

  • TRIP

The meds might help you Legat, if any, read with more clarity. I never said this was the end of Packer football. We are on the decline, but all I’ve pointed to is the obvious, and the obvious shows the end of the 2008 season. If I’m hysterical, that did it.

13-3 to fighting for 8-8? Get my anti-depressants ready then.
One way for me to cheer up real quick is for the pres. to ball up and kick TT out of town.
