Packers-Bears game blog

7:42 PM: False start. Give me a freakin’ break. Just piss-poor coaching.

7:51 PM: Another flag – this time on special teams. Pure coaching. This is just sick. No accountability on this team this year.

7:55 PM: I was just going to say pass one, run two and punt, but the Rodgers actually got a first down pass to Martin. But because of the penalty on the return the Packers are not even to where they would have started the drive. The little things kill you, and they have again this drive. Blame Tory Humphrey for this drive.

8:14 PM: That was horrible. A tipped pass interception. The Packers were on the move, to. It’s a given the Bears will be leading in one or two minutes, the only question is 3-0 or 7-0. The Packers’ defense hasn’t stopped anybody three straight times since Reggie was here. At least it seems that way.

8:30 PM: A fake punt! Holy cow. Who is coaching this team? Please finish it off now.

8:35 PM: Finish it off they did! Rodgers to Jennings, 7-0 Pack. Wow. 91 yards in this weather. Very impressive. Can the defense does its job?

8:38 PM: I’m sorry. I forgot about our horrible special teams. Same story as every game this year. Offense does the job, the defense and special teams give it right back. I wish I could be mad, but it is like a bad marriage, same crap, different day. It is hard to care at this point.

8:59 PM: The Packers put together a sweet 58-yard drive to take a 14-3 lead. Of course, scared to death they kicked the ball out of bounds and gave the Bears the ball at the 40. My guess is 14-10 at half.

mm will get me more year. They will draft high, get AR back after a year of real experience, and get guys healthy. If another fiasco he will be gone.

  • AATP

Doug, I agree, but he need to know how upset we Packer fans are so next season he takes coaching very seriously – we have very high expectation for next year and he should know this…

  • AATP

You know what the worst part of that damn game was? That spot for the Bears on 4th down was horrible, that should have been our ball at the 4 yard line and the game should have been over at that point. Just my thoughts…

  • dd

we better win more than 5 games next year

  • dd

    aatp your right

  • AATP

I’m checking out for the night but I have to say, I’m dejected in ways I can’t even explain – the Bears had no right winning that damn game at all… Even the announcers are saying they had no right winning that game and had way too much luck on their side…

  • dd

The bears coach was even shock that they won the game how crazy is that

  • NashvillePackerbacker2

We have witness a total collapse of a football team. One word “coaching”. We have none. We hear MM saying week after week we need to get things”fixed” and doesn’t get “fixed”. This one really hurts. Total domination for 3 quarters until it counts. And then we collapse like a house of cards. Unbelievable. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

  • Mel e Mel

This is the great genius of TT, he trying to improve the draft position! He needs the ammo to trade down!

  • AATP

Nashville, we dominated the entire game but a couple lucky turns kept them in the game… The offense did it’s job to get us in position to win in the final seconds of the game and the incredible but flabbergasting happened once again. So at least this week we can’t say that AR didn’t do his job to get us in position to win in the final seconds of the game. This time it was all on special teams. The coaching that failed once again was the defensive play calling and the special teams did us no favors… but then again, this was also a HUGE game of luck for the Bears tonight… This isn’t all on the team, two weird bounces game them 10 points and two dropped INTs by Collins hurt a little too.

  • AATP

Ah well, screw ‘em all… The Bears are as done as the Viqueens regardless of who gets into the playoffs… neither team is good enough to do anything of substance come the playoffs so I don’t even care… Like I said, I gotta hope someone does well in the playoffs so I can enjoy football into the playoffs so I figure I’ll back the Dolphins and their story until this season is over. Then I’ll be like all the other naysayers here on Packernet watching everything TT, MM and the other MM do here in the offseason with the utmost scrutiny.

  • AATP

I hope we’re Superbowl contenders by 2011 as the Superbowl is here in the new Dallas Cowboys stadium in Arlington. Would be absolutely awesome to be able to be a part of that whole thing… So my vote is 2011 we’re in the Superbowl :) Yeah, yeah, it’s the alcohol talking now, but I’ll pay the big money to see the game since I’m here anyway…

  • TRIP

There is no way we’d lose this game with competent coaching.

    Cowher for Head Coach ’09!

  • TC

Oh geez, so this is what I recall circa 1992. 5-10 and might be looking at a humilating loss to the Lions in Lambeau. So what, who cares, right? It’s just a game. For all of those younger folks here get ready to witness a good 15-20 years of blah football. This team is missing a LEADER. He is in a Jets uni. Too bad…

Ted Thompson you are my hero. I worship you for basically alienating a great player. Those types of players, especially QB’s don’t come by very often.

13-3 and a game from the Super Bowl to 5-10 and pure apathy. I don’t care anymore. I will be able to turn the page and reconcile my grief once that jerk, Ted Thompson is led out of town.

    A heart-BROKEN Packers fan…

?????????????????? …..snatching defeat from the jaws of victory….

  • http://Orlando Mark

Hello, I found something to add from last nights game. Of course special teams couldn’t be overcome again. The Bears are good at them and this year we’re especially bad(even our new punter shanked a punt). I just want to comment that Finley looks like he’s improved to give us some hope for next year. Of course rookies except for running back take time to learn and adjust. Exceptional rookies can come in and play well if they are sprinkled in with good veterans, like Nelson was. But not with the “youngest” team in the league. So for those of you that are waiting for some savior in the next draft you should take a moment to realize the importance of tested veterans. Who we, or someone else, might have taken the time and trouble and losses to teach.

  • Pete H

Well I can’t even discuss this crap anymore. I’ll be back in Feb. or March for our annual lack of free agency talk. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night…except you TT

  • http://Orlando Mark

Pete, I had to turn off the game at the end, before the Bears tied it to go and throw up. When I turned it back on to watch the OT loss I was a lot more relaxed and objective. Must have been something I ate? Merry Christmas.

  • paul

I have never felt this way before. I know I am going to root for the Packers next week but if they get beat by the 0-15 lions, I think that may not be such a bad thing…if you know what I mean. I have never seen so much talent abused like this in my life. The coaching is horrific. I did not think special teams could get worse and speaking of that, Crosby had a chance to win two games this year in the end. I remember Longwell was close to a sure thing every year, he just could not kick off deep…until he got to the Vikes, must be coaching…I’ll shut up for now, I can go on and on forever about how we could be at least 11-5 this year if we had a coach….but he went to NY. FUCK Merry Christmas everyone. Remember, it is only football.

“the Bears had no right winning that damn game at all… had way too much luck on their side…”

I watched the game and I know what you’re saying, but I’m tired of hearing about “bad luck” in connection with the Packers weekly give-away promotion. Most every game we’ve lost this season has hinged on one or two plays. If one of our guys steps up and makes a play, the outcome is different. Maybe Nick Collins (who played pretty well last night) just catches the ball rather than thinking ahead to his “return”. Maybe A.J. Hawk gets out to tackle his charge in the flat. Maybe the FG unit O-Line holds the d-line for two seconds so Crosby can get his kick off. The other teams make plays when it matters…

My 2nd rant point involves the continued pathetic play calling during crunch time. McCarthy continues to tie Rodgers hands rather than give him a chance to win these games! Run the ball into the line & throw to WR in flat, expecting him to make somebody miss on that field! Somebody needs to tell him we were 5-9 and didn’t need to play it safe, settling for a FG.

My summary is that this team plays in the image of their HC; he’s set precedent that “playing it safe” is the way and his team follows suit. Other teams get after it and that explains our last four losses of 4 points, 3 points, 4 points and 3 points. If McCarthy doesn’t get fired, I hope they at least mandate him to bring someone else in to call the plays….

  • Laurence

Couldn’t have said it better Paul.

  • jeffn

Stand strong guys, we are all Packer fans we have been through this before. We will be right back up there next year.

  • Michael Legat

Hallelujah, I have seen the light. I have zero confidence in this coaching staff. Zip. Zilch. You can say what you want about the talent brought in, but if they are good enough to a hold a lead or tie in the fourth quarter of all but two games this season, they should be good enough to win more than five games, for crying out loud.

A dozen different excuses every week = no excuse whatsoever. Send ‘em all packing.

  • Roy Jamison

Have we gone from the worst of the Best teams to the best of the worst teams?
BTW, I would be happy to ask TT at season’s end, “You fired Sherman for having one losing season, now that you have had two losing seasons, one even season, and only one winning season during your 4 years here, when would you consider firing yourself?”

  • Roy Jamison

Another BTW, the “Special Teams” coach Stock should resign, effective immediately!

  • Matt Hayton

Welcome to the dark side, Legat. May the force be with you.

Here’s my basic question? Could MM’s playcalling been that much diferent than it was last year? Doubt it. We are all creatures of habit. Favre made MM’s playcalling look lightyears better than what it is. No fault to Rodgers, but he hasn’t played in the league 16 years and seen every defense like ol #4. Favre regularly audibled at the line of scrimmage last year, in fact he audibled more last year than I ever remember him doing in his entire time here. Hindisght being 20/20, that says an awful lot about MM’s playcalling. Favre’s physical talent at this stage in his career is inferior to AR, but not his mental ability to lead an offense and change the play at the line of scrimmage.

I am seeing a key difference emerge between the 2 players: Favre would kill drives w/picks, but he’d also make the great play. AR kicks FGs instead of scoring TDs because he has a tendency to lock in on a receiver. He did again last night, it was 3 and goal and James Jones was WIDE OPEN in the corner of the endzone and instead he tried to fire it into double-coverage to Jennings in the middle of the field. Favre would’ve scored a TD to Jones there…if he hadn’t thrown a pick on 1st or 2nd down.

Bottom line we lost this game due to Special Teams (Wow, that was awful – Stock has to go!) And becasue our offense only scored 3 points in the second half.

And don’t worry I know it was Aaron Rodgers fault, it was defense. They only had 2 interceptions, should have had 3 or 4 and Woodson or Collins should have scored on one of their 2 picks. That God-awful defense…what are they thinking, they gave up 212 yards of offense? They should have held them to 50 yards. Then and only then would it have been Aaron Rodgers fault.

God-forbid it be his fault, he shoulders no blame, it’s ABSOLUTELY 100% the guys around him. It’s the Head Coach, it’s the O-Line, it’s Special Teams, it’s the Defense, it’s the refs for god-sake: did you see that horse-collar penalty in OT? Should have never been called!!! This team is 0-8 in close games and absolutely none of that blame gets pinned on the QB, who touches the ball more than anyone else on the field in a given game.

That’s ludicrous, if you actually believe that. 0-8 in close games is inexcusable as QB in the NFL, I don’t care how bad the team around you is. You should be able to make plays at crunch time win atleast 2 or 3 of those games. Last night, I actually would agree that AR wasn’t at fault for losing the game. The blame really should fall on MM for taking the ball out of his hands again and the horrific special teams play, but AR wasn’t the answer AGAIN last night.

When you are 5-10, everyone, including the QB is at fault. In my honest opinion, balme for this season rests, in this order: TT, MM, Defense, OL, AR, Special Teams.

Last night late in the 4th quarter they needed to run the ball down the throats of that Bears D for a winning TD, from the 35 yard line!!! And they could not do it. And that comes down to O-Line, previously, the D allowed a tying score because Forte ran all over the place on that last drive. Capping it off with a 2 yard TD run. They did exactly what we needed to do, but couldn’t get it done.

Haynesworth and Birk and a Top 10 draft pick, gives this team atleast 2 more wins next year. AR putting together a few GW drives should be worth 2 more victories and a new D-Coordinator and Special Team Coach should be worth a game a piece: 11-5
sounds about right. Hopefully TT spends some money, some heads roll andTT doesn’t trade down for 4 7th rounders!!!! This team is a score away in every game from being 13-2 right now. There’s some glass is half-full for you!

  • Jeff

Playing for the field goal at the end was punk-ass crap. We’ll never know if Rodgers would have been good enough because MM didn’t give him the chance. We had them down – should have gone for the throat. O-line played relatively well most of the night. They should not be able to stand up to our receivers especially with Brown out, but we don’t even take that shot. Not even when we have nothing to lose. Just played safe for the f-ing field goal. Honestly, I’m happy that big fooker blocked it just so Coach Mike didn’t get away with his bullshit, weak-ass play calling.

  • Roy Jamison

Why is Jarrett Bush always in the wrong place?

  • Roy Jamison

I could coach a Pop Warner team that would hold that stinkin’ Bears offense to 200 yards. They really really suck.

  • Pack4life

Let the cuts begin. Tony Moll, John Kuhn (Daryn Colledge must move to LT and Chad Clifton cant possibly rehab his injuries. The zone blocking scheme. Ruvell Martin.

  • Jeff

I’d agree with Moll. I have to wonder about the converted linebacker experiment with regard to Kuhn. If Colledge can move outside and we can get a solid RT and LG, maybe Spitz would be OK? Can we hope that much?

How ’bout the D line? Kampman and Pickett are solid performers, but I think everybody else has a lot to prove.

Why Ruvell Martin? He seems as good if not better than other #4 or #5 receivers out there? Hell, at his size, he’s almost another TE. What am I missing?

We don’t really have a prototypical #1 wideout – Nelson and Martin bring some of that don’t they?

  • Pack4life

If this wasnt Martins Breakout year when will it be. He has been on the roster for years Jordy Nelson has contributed more than him I think we can use that roster spot for a lineman.
The only thing that can fix the line is a stud draft choice ( I wouldnt bet on it) or
we really need to go after Haynesworth and draft some guys to develop.
Its sad how this has gone from strength to weakness so fast.

  • Pack4life

Since ReAlignment in 2002 only 2 Teams have won the North. GB and da Bears. TT and MM have screwed up this arrangement. The Pack has won it 4 times the Bears twice. Wolf and Sherman focused on winning the division period and moving on from there. Remember when the Bears under Jauron had the luckiest season in the history of Mankind and the Pack was still a better team? We are about to be surpassed long term by the VIKES and that didnt need to happen.

  • Roy Jamison

The Falcons coach today said one of their goals was not to lose two games in a row. That way, he said, they’d be in the hunt at the end of the year. Maybe we should focus on winning one in a row?

  • Roy Jamison

I think Longwell developed better pad level in higher ground Minnesota. Too close to water level in GB for that.

  • Roy Jamison

Things to be Thankful for in 2009.
    1. Won’t have qb thinking about retiring.
    2. Despite Jerry Jones outrageous spending on new stadium, Lambeau is the greatest place for football in the world.
    3. Plenty of salary cap
    4. Really really unexpected high draft choices.
    5. One year of development for backup qbs.
    6. A punter not named Frosty
    7. Eggnog lots and lots of eggnog
    8. Cheese, lots and lots of cheese.
    9. Fine breweries
    10. Al’s blog. Saving the best for last.

  • Pack4life

TT goals looking like Peterman from Seinfeld. MM goal is to make Dunkin Donuts profitable.

  • Roy Jamison

I think Holmgren left several dozen donuts in the Packer freezer when he left. I do have a question; where does MM put his pen when he has a stocking hat on instead of the baseball cap?
