Is Williams the better option at DC?

A new name emerged in the Packers’ defensive coordinator search and that is former Jacksonville defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. A day after interviewing Mike Nolan word was head coach Mike McCarthy was trying to coordinate a meeting with Williams. Both Nolan and Williams have plenty of experience but Williams’ defenses have had more success than Nolan’s have over the years. Williams’ defenses have almost always ranked in the top ten and his ability to devise schemes and be successful with  whatever talent he has  is his strong suit, which might make him a good fit in Green Bay.

I don’t know which way I’m leaning now other than against Winston Moss. I like Williams’ record better than Nolan’s but I wouldn’t mind seeing a 3-4 defense in Green Bay either, which is what Nolan would bring, maybe not right away but over time. Reports are Williams is a hot commodity and the Packers would have to move fast to get him, which kind of goes against McCarthy’s way of doing things, so while I think I would almost rather see Williams now, I think Nolan will still be the guy. And that is OK too.

Williams is the highest paid assistant that is available. He is known as a football purest. He will command top dollar which makes this hire highly unlikely.

I agree, when it comes to spending dollars, this organization has squeezed pennies and by doing so has lost dollars. By his actions, MM has admitted he screwed up in employing the Bates/Jimmy Johnson scheme. Or, another way you could read it is that MM doesn’t want to admit that his buddy TT didn’t supply him with players to run that defense. If Nolan is hired I think he would be flexible in using the best defense to fit his players and be able to adjust to that happening in case of injuries. It makes sense to have a system based on a stout point of attack and above average linebackers. We have a ways to go to get there, but let’s hope TT and MM correct the error of their ways. As luck would have it, this draft is full of above average linebackers.

There’s the impression that the Packers (ie Ted Thompson) are not willing to spend money. I don’t think that’s so. TT signed Charles Woodson when nobody else thought he was worthwhile. Sure he’s frugal and goes for value. I think that if he and McCarthy feel that Williams is the answer, they’ll be willing to pony up the money for him. It’s essentially Thompson’s decision. They don’t have to go through an owner. That’s the good and the bad of it.

    Next year will be telling.

They will spend whatever it takes because they both know their jobs are on the line if they have a losing record next year. Money is not going to be an object at this point.

People that whine about GB not spending sacks of money make me laugh. Look at the teams that spent big bucks this/last year Jets, raiders, browns, 40whiners are any of them in the playoffs? Giants got rid of players, Carollina traded Kris Jenkins,(by the way their last two games were the only ones missing any of their defensive starters they started the season with, they had the SAME guys all season!) most of the teams built their teams through the draft and added FAs to fill spots. Even the Pats added key vets that wanted to win a SB not big name FAs that wanted $$$ big bucks. There is a difference, Cory W. could have stayed here and still got paid but been able to make a SB run. That was just as much his choice to leave. I don’t recall anyone on here saying he was worth what he got paid, did we miss him absolutly. Injuries killed us this year, KGB not having any thing left in his tank hurt us also,(and how is that TTs fault?) we have some holes to fill no doubt. Smart teams don’t let their ELITE players go anymore just the ones that, like Dirty Harry once said are “legends in their own mind”. So I seriously doubt that Tenn. is going to let AH go.
As far as DCs go I know Moss is liked in the locker room but I don’t see him being qualified enough. Nolan would be a good choice because he has experience in both the 3-4 as well as the 4-3 and has coached under some great HCs. The same could be said of Williams, they are both good coaches. But what are the intangeables are they good teachers or good motivators. I guess we’ll find out eventually.

Cali, we could have used Jenkins. I know he was a big reason why the Jets were a lock to be in the playoffs until #4 fell apart. KGB had been dropping, literally for years. If you were the GM would you be counting on Harrell. Our 4-3 defense was built on a strong D-line. When that fell apart so did our defense. If we had a great running game like Carolina we could have kept the defense off the field and wouldn’t need someone like Jenkins. Hell, we wouldn’t even need a QB as good as #12. We are close to being a good team and I don’t want money to get in the way of us making the playoffs next year. Why did they redo Lambeau if it wasn’t to have money to compete.

Congratulations Cali. You have provided the most utterly astonishing post of the year so far. When people complain that the pack does not spend money it is because they NEVER sign free agents and also TT is too cheap to even use the whole salary cap.
The Pats have added big ticket free agents- due some research before making sh*t up. It was Cory Williams choice to leave? Really? Have you talked to him recently. Dude, he got TRADED because TT didn’t think he was worth the $$. We sure could have used him this year and had the $ under the cap to keep him.

Then you proceed with, “Injuries killed us this year, KGB not having any thing left in his tank hurt us also,(and how is that TTs fault?)”.

Really? First of all injuries are a shitty excuse. Second and more importantly IT IS TED THOMPSON’S JOB TO KNOW WHEN PLAYERS ARE DONE!!!! They paid him $6+mm this year for 3 games. That completely falls on TT. You seriously need to get your football knowledge somewhere other than The Replacements. Third, ‘anything’ is one word.

You seriously doubt Ten will let Haynesworth go? Really? Do you realize he is a FREE agent? When Ten put the franchise tag on him last year they agreed not to franchise him this year. IT IS NOT THE TITANS CHOICE. That said he may sign there but it is completely on him. We should offer him whatever he wants.

I am sick of utterly idiotic posts like the one by Cali. This blog needs more people who actually understand football and/or have reading comprehension. Cheers.

(FALSE)Truth, I believe it was ESPN that did an interview with rosenhaus, rosenbloom(TOs and #85s agent) what ever his name is. He was asked about his many differents clients goals in gettn’ paid. He said there are two schools of thought A) SHOW ME THE MONEY, GET ME ALL OF THE MONEY YOU CAN ,I DON’T CARE WHERE IT’S AT, I JUST WANT TO GET PAID. B) I like this team, locker room, where this team is headed so just get me a good contract. I want to stay here. C. Williams was one play from the SB, so in my OPINION a SB wasn’t a priority but gettn’ paid was. KGB had 9 sacks last year playing on passing downs plus that doesn’t even count QB pressures. He had surgery right before the season started not in March or April so how was TTto know he was done. We all knew he was no longer a full time player but he didn’t that fast of a decline last year. I don’t remember mr. truth were you on here last fall/spring saying KGB was done cut him or that C.W. worth all of the money he got paid. GB was able to use last years cap space to sign #12 to keep him here for a while, now wether or not YOU think that was a good deal or not that’s another debate(and reading your coments on TT I’m guessing not). AND YEAH I’m aware that A.H. is a FA, that doesn’t mean they can’t sign him to a good contract. AND IF YOU DON’T CARE FOR THE POST ON THIS BLOG THAN FELL FREE TO LEAVE AT ANY TIME! Peace out I have a canoe trip to go to.
