Things I think

I think Ted Thompson will surprise us all with the number nine pick in the draft. And judging on his first round history we will not be happy…

I think A.J. Hawk and Nick Barnett are going to be beasts in the new 3-4 defense…

I think Mike McCarthy putting an end to cross-training on the offensive will help big time…

I also think Jason Spitz is the starting center next season…

I think Ryan Pickett will do just fine at nose tackle…

I think the Packers need help at running back, either to push Ryan Grant or to replace him…

I think Aaron Rodgers needs to start 16 more games before he is completely off the hook on the injury rap…

I don’t think Ted Thompson will be a big player in free agency this year, there is nobody out there yet worth the money…

I think the Packers can compete in the post-salary cap NFL because the renovation to Lambeau Field gives them year-around revenue and along with the practice fields and training facilities,  the Packers have one of the finest organizations in the NFL…

I do not think Brett Favre will join an NFL pre-game show. How would you ever get Brett Favre in a suit and tie?

I do think Brett Favre will return to Green Bay this year to get his number retired and I will be standing and cheering the moment…

I think I am worried about the depth at cornerback, Al Harris and Charles Woodson are not getting any younger…

I think the Packers need to find a safety opposite Nick Collins no matter what it takes, Bigby can not be counted on…

I think it is too early to make predictions, but I like the Packers’ chances in the NFC North…

Finally, I think it is going to be a long month-and-a-half until the draft, you know the Packers’ history in free agency.  At least this offseason we have something to look forward to with the new defense and all the coaching changes. Don’t forget about special teams. One thing is sure, this offseason will not be like last offseason.

Larry. All I’m trying to say is that we were 6-10 last year after four years of Ted bringing in the talent. That does not inspire a great deal of confidence. We’re not even .500 in those years. One winning season. As a fan, I need to see some progress – is it too much to think that five years should be enough time to take a perennial playoff team to a point where it can compete for a wildcard?

I’m backing the team and know I’m just a putz diddling on the computer, but I’m very concerned about the condition of both the OL and DL, our age at CB, our mediocrity at LB, and what looks like a strictly receiving group of TEs. I think we have some good young DBs, but they’ve looked terribly sloppy at times. Even Collins who had some great results last year looked uncomfortably lost for a 4th year man at times.

As a longtime football fan, I think I have enough brains to justify saying those things even if I really don’t have the knowledge to pass judgement on FA procedings.

More than anything, I’m just pissing in the wind until football starts again – or at least until Northwoods Baseball.

  • JeffN

We can agree to disagree but what I am observing happening in Green Bay is just a different more longer term plan than what many fans want. There will still be a few FA mixed in here and there but the huge emphasis will be on the draft and resigning their home grown. Seriously tho just consider the possibility that the Packers organization is working on a longer term approach but one which will be more permanent once the team is completly built.

I know you don’t want to hear this but please just consider it.

  • JeffN

PeteH, you are going to be happy with how Sitton plays this season. He is going to be a good right guard for us.

  • Pete H

I get what you are saying JeffN, and I hope I am wrong in believing that, for the most part, what TT has drafted to be our future isn’t looking so great. Look, if after these four years he had shown an ability to adequately judge or develop offensive or defensive lineman I would have more faith, but the fact is that our best in both trenches are still leftovers from the dreaded Sherman era. That doesn’t say much. This isn’t to say that Sitton or whoever couldn’t be “that guy”, but we seem to have “that guy” every year in the draft. He has been very hit and miss in the draft so far, which would be fine if that weren’t the vast majority of his building mentality. He has struck gold a few times, but not enough yet to inspire me with the confidence to fall in line with his system. As I also said, I would be fine with it if it didn’t appear as though we were headed backwards, but this team all of the sudden looks like it has a lot more holes in it than it did this time last year.

  • Pete H

I do like Sitton, but I remain skeptical.

  • JeffN

I remain a bit skeptical about Giacomini but not so much Sitton.

  • JeffN

We have seen the gold from his earlier drafts come to fruition. The more recent drafts need a bit of time to develop.

  • Pete H

    I hope you are right

  • The Truth

This long term plan is the most retarded thing I have read. This is the NFL, there is a hard cap, every team plays by the same rules and teams turn around by being smart in a much faster time frame. No we don’t have the Jerry Jones/Snyder dollars behind us and that is fine. I am not asking to mortgage the future to succeed now. THEY ARE NOT 2 INDEPENDENT OPTIONS. The next GM (which will be in less than 2 years) will have a different philosophy than TT which may or may not be better. But I am sure most of you turds will think that is the right way then. Larry, your posts have no logic or reasoning behind them. Do you reach around TT with your right hand or do you give him the stranger?

Is it so much to want the team to improve and be competitive in a reasonable time frame? Of course not. Now I am just upset. I truly hope I am wrong but I certainly was not this year.

  • Larry

Pete H, note the quotes; not my words – TTs. JeffN we’re fighting a losing battle here I fear. Looks like we’ve separated the “Old Farts” from the “Newbees”. Man, I don’t care if its 5, 7, or 9 year plans I just don’t want to go back to the 70s and 80s when our hearts were broken over and over again with some big names, but no teams. Boy, if it was just as simple as some think. Its all a crap shoot now; Pete H, there is no REGGIE out there because as TT (Truth) says they’re all in it for the quick buck. In any case, great posts, pro and con isn’t it fun? Get used to it, this organization will never break the bank again, it can’t.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Instead of looking at Dallas or Washington the teams that are the measure of a great front office are Pittsburgh and New England. They go out and draft, trade or sign free agents they need. They don’t overpay for even their own players but they have a plan for the ones that they have to let go. It can be done even with the worst draft positions. I think it’s time to hold TT to a higher standard. Mediocrity isn’t going to do it for me. He’s got this year and no more excuses.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

I don’t know what guys like you, (the truth) for example, do for a living, but it’s too bad you didn’t put in the hard work and time to become a head coach or GM……….. because here you are stuck with all the answers and no damn place to use them. Maybe you could join a fantasy league and clean up!!!!! Don’t imagine any of them would stand a chance against you………………

  • http://Orlando Mark

DA, you’ll be happy to know I won my fantasy league. That was more fun than watching the Pack last year. That, actually made me throw up(I felt much better afterward). We all want to see us do better, Larry, the Truth, Al, everyone. Maybe TT is afraid of free agency but it’s a tool we could use. I don’t care if he uses it or not but I do care about results. We’re close to having a contender and I want to see TT bring the Lombardi Trophy back home where it belongs, or I want to get someone else who will.

  • Pete H

DA, why do you keep chiding people with the same remark about how we should all be GMs? We know who we are. What we are is capable of formulating our own opinions, not based on the philosophy of the current system running the team. We are capable of putting successive thoughts together as a possibility of what WE THINK is better way. It may or may not be….it doesn’t matter. Whether the Packers ever win another game again doesn’t really matter, but it is something that as human beings we get joy out of watching and participating in conversation about. That is one thing that separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. Now maybe you were born and raised as a lap dog, but please allow those of us who can think complete individual thoughts to do so.

  • Pete H

So do you tell people when they are having a political talk “you should all be presidents, you have all the answers…maybe if you played Axis and Allies you would dominate”…. or would you tell your pastor, priest, rabbi, shaman, whatever that they should be God because they have all the answers. Did Fascism take over the US and I miss it? Should I not have an opinion on whether or not the next tv I buy is worthwhile because they make a better one than I could, or that they have the title of television maker and that by itself invalidates my opinion?

  • Pete H

I welcome all those who have a different opinion than I do..thats what makes this fun, but for you to simply knock people for simply having an opinion, is just moronic, and when you do that I will make you know it.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Why do you guys piss and moan, day after day after day?????????? Always from a hind-sight sort of way that “WOW” maybe that should have been done different……. And actually, I really don’t want to get dragged back into this again, better things to do than sitting around typing up blogs all day. Really, I just thought “the truth” was a bit obnoxious and was going to throw a few comments his way……. You guys take care of the new boy!!!!

  • Mel e Mel

I contend that the current mediocrity is worse than the early the 80′s teams. There was no Free agency then. In the Strike year of 1982 we made the playoffs and beat the Cards before losing to the Cowboys. 1983 had a very entertaining team and no Defense. And who can forget the Cardiac Pack of 1989 (incidently thats when plan B Free Agency began and then GM Tom Braatz used to the effect of a 10-6 season)
Now we have off seasons were we Sign Jordy Nelsons Brandon Chillars and Justin Harrells. TT should sign Greg Jennings to a motherlode worth of money because this team would be nearly unwatchable without him. I am willing to give Hawk the benefit of the doubt because the old system made him passive and unsure. That dog wont hunt with the new system. I Think Mckenzie should be the new GM and TT should take a scouting position somewhere so he wont have to interact in public

  • JeffN

Devils Advocate I agree with and feel your sarcasm in relation to the newby (the truth). Basically comes on here talks about a bunch of stuff the rest of us have been talking about for the last year, then talks to us like we never heard about the stuff he’s talking about which is the same stuff we have been talking about and acts like he is going to enlighten us about a bunch of conversations he is behind on. Then has the audacity to call us names. Pretty childish and ridiculous not to mention naive. I’m guessing he is something like a 16 year old and reminds me of someone who belongs to some sort of extremist movement.

  • http://www.scotrstone.com Scot

TT now wants to bring in Kevin Burnett. He’s been visiting Oakland and San Diego. Any bet either of those teams will outbid the Packers? Sometime I feel like TT is just making the public feel like he’s looking at free agency to make the fans feel better, even though he really doesn’t plan to sign any free agents until after the draft.

  • Rocky70

The surprise pick at #9 could very well be a trade down. The Jets, Bears, Bucs, Lions & Vikings all need a franchise QB. If Sanchez is still around at #9, look for one of these five teams to trade up to draft him. GB would switch 1st rounders & receive an additional 2nd or 3rd. I’d do it.

Spitz will start at center. If GB drafts 2 or 3 OL look for Wells to be waived before TC.

The so-called ‘elite’ FAs haven’t been worth their contracts for years. Free Agency was relevant in the nineties. No more. Teams pay to keep their own first.

Pickett will do fine at NT. Brace (drafted) will rotate with him.

Favre will not return for his #4 retirement until the present regime is gone. That won’t happen in the next five years.

The NFL will add a game or two to the regular season schedule & reduce a like amount in the pre-season schedule. How the extra revenue is spread out will pacify both the union & owners.

GB will be 6-2 at the halfway point of season 2009. They will hold a 2 game lead over the Vikes (4-4). Drafted rookies will play a major role in transforming GBs defense to a top-10 level.

Call me a dreamer. At least my dreams aren’t doom & gloom.

Oh no. We’re going to go into this season without Colin Cole OR Chris Canty? We are doomed. DOOMED, I tell you.

    Idiots the lot of ya…#

Thanks, I needed that. A real belly laugh. Too bad 95% won’t get it.
