Can I get a little help?

I have to admit it, I don’t feel like doing the research. Can any of you out there tell me what free agent the Packers passed up or lost out on to last year that made a huge impact in their new team? I’m sure some must have, or this outcry over the lack of moves by the Packers would not be going on. The fact that nobody comes immediately to mind makes me even more curious. Free agency is a farce in the NFL. Pure and simple.

Each and every year you have maybe one player who has forced himself out his current team that warrants big money, beyond that all players available are either backups looking for a starting job or aging veterans looking for one more signing bonus. Every team in the NFL has enough money to keep the players they want to keep, especially with the salary cap no longer in effect after this year, so for 90 percent of the players available, the team they are leaving no longer had use for them or simply didn’t want them.

I certainly can see the Tennessee Titans wanting no part of paying $100 million to a guy who spiked an opponents bare head on purpose during a game. The guy has never played 16 games in a year and is one play away from a suspension every game. Good luck with that Mr. Snyder.

Everybody says Chris Canty is the you-know-what. Sure, I wouldn’t have minded signing him at the right price, but if Jerry Jones thought he was worth the money the Cowboys would have found a way to keep him. This is Jerry Jones after all. It didn’t take the Cowboys long to give big money to Keith Brooking, ah, money that could have kept Canty. The Packers tried, but it appears Canty wouldn’t visit Green Bay which means he didn’t really want to play in Green Bay. So you can’t give money to a guy like that.

Maybe because of the lack of moves he makes he gets a bad rap, but Thompson has hit on more free agency signings than he has missed on. There are no Joe Johnson’s or Cletidus Hunt’s on Thompson’s resume.

What bothers me is that the Packers haven’t already done deals with their own guys like Greg Jennings to start with. Maybe the impending uncapped year has something to do with that but Jennings and I think guys like Daryn Colledge and Jason Spitz could be had at a decent price right now. At least make a move with your own guys to get the ball rolling.

But anyway, just give me a guy or two who was worth the big bucks last year. I know they are out there. But no research allowed, this is a pop quiz. Results will not be held against your semester grade.

I wouldn’t waste your time Larry. Have any of these soooooooo soooooo passionate fans called M. Murphy to get him to see the light??? Nooooooo. Do they have anything but a win-win argument? Noooooooooooo. Do they have anything they can do about it? Noooooooooooo. Enough said.

  • Larry

tt, the world is made up of titles and job descriptions. Now I know why you became a fan; because everybody else was. Sorry DA, couldn’t resist, because he isn’t insulting me as much as people with real problems. I would like to negotiate a contract with tt because he is so easy to set up for your own desired result. He really is making a fool of himself!

The Truth is no more. If you abuse it, you lose it. Go find Jon somewhere and have a party.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Wonder if Admin. Al caught a dooooozy headed your way Larry. Jon went on quite a while before he pulled his plug.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

I think what I find interesting are the guys that aren’t happy with the direction of the team. So right or wrong, they want to lead a mutiny. Apply that mentality to the team and imagine the results. Can you imagine 53 players choosing their own way to play each down? Cause you guys are basically saying not to follow the plan if you don’t think it’s good. Harlan picked Wolf and he picked TT, live with it. If TT is indeed driving the Titanic, then go down w/her or get on a different ship, but quit pushing people overboard to make her lighter.

  • Larry

Like the Titanic, DA, dont you think that MM/TT/MM saw the iceberg and changed course? Hence, the 3/4 because of the 1) adjustment every other team in the Div will have to make to react, 2) the impact of more LBs and Ss available on the STs, and the disappointment in performance of the DL. Unfortunately, like the T you dont turn the ship around on a dime and we’ll have some pain associated with the change. For their sake I hope they are successful right away or I think the hook will be out. This could be another factor in not being more active in FA with the individual FAs not being convinced its going to work. I’m not convinced that a FA moves just for money; those guys have to have some pride in their work and team. Just maybe (or should I say hopefully) the change is more compatable with the talent we have. Sure hope so!

  • Rocky70

    Larry-
You may have touched upon the key to GBs approach to free agency. GB may believe that they already have several of the pieces in place to an improved defense. Personally, I believe the key off-season change for GB is the hiring of Capers. GB’s defense lacked versatility & the ability to change based on their weekly opponent. Capers brings the week to week game planning that Sanders was unable to provide at a high level. The talent’s already there. Now, so is the coaching.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

I hope he changed it simply because he looked around and noticed that the teams that are doing consistantly well, are teams running a 3-4. And from planning the offense, he knows which is harder to play against. Still need a creative mind to think outside the box and make the 3-4 all it can be. I suppose you give up some of the power football from the 4-3. That’ll have to be replaced by creativity and finesse. And without good fan support willing to accept creativity and calculated risk, the DC may not be willing to call some of that, if he’s going to be shit on. It looks like he put together a pretty good D staff that will bring some attitude. I’m curious to see how it turns out.

  • Matt Hayton

So somehow…everyone ignored my post on going after Orlando Pace, the first time around…can anyone give me a good reason to not go after him? He’s only a 12 year vet and 33 years old…

HOF lineman like Bruce Matthews, Gary Zimmerman, Jackie Slater, Forrest Gregg, Mike Webster, Art Shell, etc. were all 15 year plus vets…

The guy probably has 3 good years left in him…why not atleast bring him in? What harm is there in bringing in a future HOF tackle?

He came back and played 14 games last year, so health really isn’t a concern, after missing all of 2007…by adding him, instantly that O-Line has depth and another veteran presence in the locker room, to help keep AR off his backside!

Pace – LT; Clifton (either RT or LG, if he didn’t want to switch sides); Wells, Spitz – Center; Colledge/Spitz, Sitton – RG; Tauscher – RT…plus you could still draft another Tackle prospect and then cut the worst OL-man in camp…

  • http://Orlando Mark

Matt, I didn’t ignore your suggestion. Just pointed out that TT won’t go after him unless he can get him cheap. Say, for what he would have to pay Taucher. TT also likes going for youth and down rates NFL experience, where you see teams like New England go after that. As for anyone else showing interest, just look at the level of intellect in the previous posts. D.A., scheme is important but so is talent. Do you think the down linemen are adequate for the job?

  • Larry

Makes sense to me Matt, and you know how tight I am with the $$. Pace is that kind of guy you make the exception for. We seem to be concentrating so much on the D I hope we don’t lose sight of the fact that the O needs trench help too.

  • Larry

Mark, I’m on the cheap-0 side usually, but on this one I’d take the chance. Is there a valid comparison of Taucher/Pace? I’d think not, but do either have anything left? Wow, this hurts.

  • Larry

Is there a trade brewing between a team that needs a 4-3 DE and one who would like an experienced 3-4 OLB?

  • JeffN

Sounds like The Truth (aka newbie) admits to hiding behind different user names on here. What a coward!

  • Devil’s Advocate…

I don’t know what to think of our D-line. Yesterday I read that Pickett had chronic knee problems last year……. that was news to me. Then a few months ago I read an article or two suggesting how deep the draft will be for D-linemen. Now it’s weak. And there’s still a draft to come. I don’t know what TT is thinking D-lineman-wise?? The whole Pace thing involves ALOT of IF’s………… If Clifton is willing to move to a different spot, if Pace is willing to come (he knows Clifton has held that spot for years), if he’s affordable, if he really does have two or three good years left………….. Sure I’d like to have seen them get Canty but I imagine they feel they have guys who can play as/almost as well as him and are way, way cheaper. I believe they’re counting on Harrell again this year and for Harrell’s and TT/MM’s sake, I hope he comes around, cause patience is getting short for all their jobs.

  • Larry

I didn’t think Canty an improvement over Kampman. Neither can play straight up at end and they both would be vieing (?) for the same OLB spot, wouldn’t they? Why spend those kind of $$ to rotate a guy? Pickett knees new to me too, in any case we need another body there.

  • Pack4life

I dont what to discuss involving players available. TT seems to believe good players grow on trees. We have holes on both lines and the draft doesnt comfort me in light of Jordy, and Justin.

  • Matt Hayton

Sorry Larry… Canty did play as true down in Cowgirls scheme, in fact, he was guy who ate up blockers and freed up DeMarcus Ware to score 20 sacks last year…can’t tell me that guy wouldn’t have helped Kampman coming off the edge in the new scheme…

DA – regarding your IF’s about Pace…”If Clifton is willing”, doesn’t matter ask Brett Favre, and “If he’s affordable” – is it affordable to leave AR at risk without any depth at both Tackle slots?

Here are some IF’s for you: What If Clifton gets hurt? What if Tauscher can’t make it back or isn’t brought back due to his injury…Packers don’t have 5 NFL starting caliber lineman on there roster today and to bank on adding more guys through the draft, who what IF they don’t pan out like other TT draft picks: Barbre, Coston, Whitacker…just doesn’t seem like a good enough reason to not atleast take a look at a HOFer?

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Favre was talking retirement for a few years. And OK, so Clifton isn’t happy about it and wants a trade and gets it. Now you’ve still have no depth at tackle spot once again. That said, it’s worth a look. And if Poppinga was the LB behind Canty last year at Dallas, is it safe to say then, that Poppy would have had 20?

  • Jeff

I’d think the only real question is whether or not Pace has a couple years left in him. If he does, I think he’d be a very valued addition. Clifton really struggled at times last year.

I wonder if Ted wasn’t getting cute with his O-line picks and trying to go for a particular type of player as opposed to just going and getting the best player out there. Philosophy question I suppose – set the scheme and try to get the right players or get the best players you can and build the scheme for them?

  • Larry

    -
I stand corrected, Matt, thanks for setting that issue.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

I don’t wanna sit around and type “what if’s” all day. Forget the Titantic. Let’s go football. I’m saying it’s about code and ethics. Just like you don’t flirt w/your best friend’s girl, there’s 3 billion of them, go get your own. We seem to have this vocal minority of you guys out there that are saying if you don’t agree with things, you change it to your way. I say you follow along in support til it’s obvious. Let’s translate it to the football field. Let’s say your one of the eleven players on offense. Coach sends in the play and it’s a run to the left. But you and maybe a couple others don’t agree with the call and feel a run to the right would be better. Now the ball gets hiked and three of you go block for the play you would have liked. How’s that going to work??? Better yet, go back to the huddle and tell everyone “see, that was a bad call” after you’ve left eight guys to try to block the eleven defenders on defense for the play that was run. Mark has played some ball. Did they block the plays that were called or did they block what they wanted ran? Did they quit blocking half way through the play if they didn’t like the call. I’ve just been saying that if you don’t like the play that’s been called and your not going to going to block for it, get off the field and let someone else go block it. Go be a Jet’s fan til TT is gone………. Trying to seperate the fan base will not do anyone any good.

  • Jeff

So, if I don’t think our team is doing well, I just bite my tongue and stew? I don’t like the way current management is doing its job, so I just go cheer for another team for a few years??

Are you serious? Disagreeent = treason?

I think disagreement among fans is part of the enjoyment. Granted, it think that enjoyment is diminished when the debate turns to verbal assaults as it has sometimes happened here. But thinking people will disagree – where’s the problem with that?

  • Jeff

Or is it more a question of degree?

  • Larry

We have 8 OLinemen that average 2.2 yrs exp., excluding Clifton and Taucher. Meaning that they were thrown into combat last yr due to the injury situation without much experience. Are we being fair to criticize them as much as we do without their really having time to adjust to the NFL game speed other than in practice? Granted the optimum would be to draft NFL ready players every year, but is that a practical expectation? I hope that last year was a wake up call to get their butts in gear quickly and I’m willing to give ‘em a chance. The other fact I’m considering is that we haven’t had a real All-Pro in that group to show them the way; we’ve had journeymen at best. We just might be selling our own short.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

What’s wrong in rooting for the Jets? They, unlike TT have done all the things you guys want. They got a stud D-lineman in Jenkins last year, as well as a stud O-lineman in Faneca and a HOF QB in Favre. They are wheeling and dealing again this year. Their salary cap is maxxed! Now they’ve got a new coach and GM(?). They were/are set to win the SB.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

At least they’re trying. You know TT is not going anywhere for at least this year. Why drive yourselves crazy with aggrivation???

  • The Truth

Larry, by saying Canty and Kampann play the same position in a 3-4 you truly showed your football knowledge. Idiot.

Al, if you are unwilling to accept dissent on your blog, why even have it? Super weak.

I will be back and you will never even know it.

  • Matt Hayton

DA you logic on fanhood is the most unAmerican take I’ve heard in a long, long time…sure glad you weren’t in the boat when Washington was leading the boys across the Potomac, or on Lincoln’s cabinet when he was attempting to end slavery in this country, because adhering to your philosophy, we’d still be Englishman with slavery!

DA – you seem to ignore the fact that the JETS WON 5 MORE GAMES more than they did in 2007 and we LOST 7 MORE GAMES than we did in ’07…it is with this banter that you are trying to make a point?

As far as Poppinga, no he wouldn’t have had 20, but maybe he would have had 5…which si 5 more than he had playing behind Justin Harrell, oh wait, I meant Corey Williams, oh wait, a combo of Jolly and Cole, that’s right…

That’s okay becasue next year he’ll be playing behind Colin Cole, oh wait, let go in FA, Corey Williams, oh wait – sorry, wishful thinking, Johnny Jolly, oh wait, he could be doing jail time…oh wait, Justin Harrell, wheewww! So if Harrell, performs and plays well, does anyone on this blog think he’ll somehow kill the injury bug that plagued him last year, the year before that and all throughout college? Because clearly DA this is the wise and prudent course of action…better hope Raji is there at #9 or our D-Line is gonna suck and they better hope he isn’t a bust like all of TT’s other picks in the trenches have been, over the last 4 years!

  • Larry

Hey, tt, I don’t think Peppers an improvement over Kampman. Neither can play straight up at end and they both would be vieing (?) for the same OLB spot, wouldn’t they? Why spend those kind of $$ to rotate a guy?

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Peppers to N.E. Cheaters???……… that’s not good. Not that TT would do it, but I’d offer a second and another pick for him. Then if they could swap their first throwing in another pick and move up for Raji, that’d put them in decent shape for the year.

  • Pack4life

    Peppers would be opposite Kampman

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Yeah, and that’d be pretty!!!! With Raji as anchor in the middle. Grab another D-lineman with their 3rd rounder.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

I’d be happy to see the Pack get Grady Jackson for a rotation w/Pickett if it doesn’t work out the other way. Pick a stud LB for opposite Kampman. I remember a few years back how the D was a sieve against the run w/Grady out and then they were decent w/him in. He’s probably only good for a year though….. he’s getting pretty long in the tooth.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Maybe the Pack could get the Gravedigger out of the mothballs for a three man rotation??? Grady, Gilbert and Ryan!!!!

  • Devil’s Advocate…

They’ve all played enough ball that they wouldn’t need practice. That’d keep them fresh all year. Just give them enough summer camp to learn the D and just have them do condition work and run throughs during the season. Send them in to give a 110% on their downs, crash through and wreck havok on anyone and anything……….. and yes, I’m just farting around.

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

Hey DA, I bet the Jets do better without the IM. They must be thanking their lucky stars IM called it quits. Maybe I should start Jetnet. Excuse me, I have to puke.
