Can I get a little help?

I have to admit it, I don’t feel like doing the research. Can any of you out there tell me what free agent the Packers passed up or lost out on to last year that made a huge impact in their new team? I’m sure some must have, or this outcry over the lack of moves by the Packers would not be going on. The fact that nobody comes immediately to mind makes me even more curious. Free agency is a farce in the NFL. Pure and simple.

Each and every year you have maybe one player who has forced himself out his current team that warrants big money, beyond that all players available are either backups looking for a starting job or aging veterans looking for one more signing bonus. Every team in the NFL has enough money to keep the players they want to keep, especially with the salary cap no longer in effect after this year, so for 90 percent of the players available, the team they are leaving no longer had use for them or simply didn’t want them.

I certainly can see the Tennessee Titans wanting no part of paying $100 million to a guy who spiked an opponents bare head on purpose during a game. The guy has never played 16 games in a year and is one play away from a suspension every game. Good luck with that Mr. Snyder.

Everybody says Chris Canty is the you-know-what. Sure, I wouldn’t have minded signing him at the right price, but if Jerry Jones thought he was worth the money the Cowboys would have found a way to keep him. This is Jerry Jones after all. It didn’t take the Cowboys long to give big money to Keith Brooking, ah, money that could have kept Canty. The Packers tried, but it appears Canty wouldn’t visit Green Bay which means he didn’t really want to play in Green Bay. So you can’t give money to a guy like that.

Maybe because of the lack of moves he makes he gets a bad rap, but Thompson has hit on more free agency signings than he has missed on. There are no Joe Johnson’s or Cletidus Hunt’s on Thompson’s resume.

What bothers me is that the Packers haven’t already done deals with their own guys like Greg Jennings to start with. Maybe the impending uncapped year has something to do with that but Jennings and I think guys like Daryn Colledge and Jason Spitz could be had at a decent price right now. At least make a move with your own guys to get the ball rolling.

But anyway, just give me a guy or two who was worth the big bucks last year. I know they are out there. But no research allowed, this is a pop quiz. Results will not be held against your semester grade.

  • Pack4life

Paul you are on to something. TT runs the Packers like an actuary, which would be great if Green Bay was a major market. The only time TT has moved with urgency was the trade with the Jets. I lived in Chicago/Twin Cities now Florida. Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren recruited Reggie and gave up a #1 for Brett Favre. Bold and decisive moves. I love Wisconsin but the current hip hop generation doesnt understand the charm of cheesland.

  • Roy Jamison

    LOL, thanks D.A.
    here’s number 9
Would love to live inside a giant block of ice, located in the north pole, with holes open to face that winds gusting up to 100 mph blow thru.

  • Jeff

Didn’t Robert Brooks once say it wasn’t so bad – long as you didn’t mind dating white girls?

  • Jeff

Sorry – that might be perceived as a bit out of line. I think the story actually was that his mother said that when he told her he was going to Green Bay, but my memory sucks.

  • Larry

Well, Paul, nice fodder for debate. I’m sure you’ll stir up a hornest’s nest with that one. This post is made up of “win at all cost” vs “GBP community integrety”. We have bounced ALL-PROs with character problems. I’ll take the 6-10, 8-8, and 9-7 any day to be a Packer fan, than winning with those who only want the night life of Miami, San Diego, etc. I can talk with pride about my team no matter what the record and don’ t have to hang my head in shame and say “but, but, and but”!!!

  • The Truth

Are we trying to make excuses for why TT can’t get free agents? Give me a break fellas!!

Not don’t get me wrong, all other things equal and GB is in trouble. If you were in your 20′s and 30′s with fame and millions in the bank where would you like to be?

But things are not always equal. People are looking for money, a chance to start, money, winning, coaches they respect, money and MONEY! TT is cheap-that is why we don’t get free agents.

If you pay them they will come.

  • Larry

Little tt, you have no appreciation of the organization of which you claim to be a fan and have absolutely no class to make a post like that. Go do your homework!

  • The Truth

Larry, with all due respect, you are retarded. How’s that for class?

Do my homework? On what? How old are you dude?

This is the NFL-every team is “Win at all Costs”. The difference is that a lot of teams, including GB, think the best way to win is to bring in players with good characters. Even teams like the Cowboys are realizing that you can’t just bring in talent if they are all a bunch of attention seeking a-holes. But please don’t pretend that GB’s players are somehow unique to the NFL. The team is, but the players are all the same. And most of them would rather be in Miami/San Diego/etc most of the time IF you were only talking night life. But depending on many other factors they may like it in GB…but in December don’t try to pretend they wish they were somewhere else at times.

Larry, name an all pro that we bounced for character problems not related to contract disputes? Waiting…waiting….right, there is none. And that is very separate from character issues. Actually now that I mention it, did we cut lofton after he got elevator head? Maybe…

What Super Bowl winning team do you think fans hung there head at? Answer: none. So quit telling me you’d rather lose than win. Give me a break. If that is true you are the shittiest Packer fan I have ever conversed with. Seroiusly.

  • The Truth

And don’t ever question my fanhood. Just because I am not a shit eater does not make me less of a fan.

Please complete this: Winning is not everything…

  • Larry

You answered your own question, DUDE! Not gonna, but I could give you 11 since St. Vincent and (3) were All-Pro, albeit not when they were booted out. Further, there are teams with character who hire coachs with character. You can name ‘em yourself. I’ll submit the teams are in it to make money, not win at all costs. Its some fans who want to win at all costs.

  • Larry

Should have stated “including” St. Vincent not since, oops.

  • Larry

Oh, didnt see the last post; the ending is -the effort to win is, or words to that effect. Those who didnt live the history must look it up, I suggest you crack open a book once in a while. Besides its the first part of the quote that you screwed up, not the ending that matters.

  • RayL

    TT is making his bed…

  • Reid

Yeah, the name-calling is really douchebagious. Especially when he shows up what, 2 weeks ago or less, and starts trashing someone like Larry who’s been posting here forevah. Maybe little tt can read that book “How to disagree with someone without being a douchebag”, I think it was written by Chuck Norris.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

I was just thinking, what might have been fun last year, would have been to see the Pack get Kris Jenkins to team up w/Cullen Jenkins…………………. though it would have been short lived w/the injury and who even knows how well they get along. Maybe there’s a little sibling rivalry going on for all we know???? Then again, I suppose some of you have already tossed that idea around, I probably missed it.

  • Pete H

James Lofton was an all pro who was booted for trumped up allegations….as for Taylor. when he won the MVP it was outside linebacker. That is a chance I would love to see them take.

  • Pack4life

James Lofton’s incident was one of a series of unfortunate events i.e. Mossy Cade, Charles Martin, and Fridge VS George Cumby on MNF. Ron Wolf Came and changed the culture. I submit the franchise under TT is in the middle of a major identity crisis.
If I am a Free Agent why would I come to the Packers?

  • JeffN

You guys shouldn’t argue with this guy that calls himself The Truth. He is behind on all the conversations we have been talking about for the last year, calls us childish names, and acts like he is 16 years old. Do we really need that? Just ignore him, he doesn’t have the report coming on here like 2 weeks ago (like Reid said) and trashing all the Packernet veterans like he is. Besides he probably belongs to some sort of extremist movement or maybe he is Jon. You really want to interact with a guy like that? Who knows, but if you don’t add fuel to the fire he will go away. Please just ignore this guy.

  • paul

To continue my point, I frankly don’t even like the summers in the Midwest as I come back each year to visit the inlaws…And I was born and raised in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

  • iccyfan

We get it – you don’t like the midwest. Fortunately, TT isn’t trying to sign you to play DE in our new 3-4 defense!!!

I won’t pretend to know what motivates NFL players, but I’d wager the opportunity to gain playing time and participate on a playoff team probably trumps potential nightlife (or climate). If it doesn’t, the player probably doesn’t have his head in the right place and wouldn’t contribute anyway.

I don’t get the gnashing of teeth over having failed to sign one of the available FA D – Linemen thus far. I don’t think anybody believes Haynesworth or Canty were worth the money they were guaranteed, and I’d never even heard of Kevin Burnett before this offseason! Igor Olshansky is a career underachiever; who wants a piece of that? I’m confident the pieces will fall into place thru a combination of existing players, draft and lower-priced FA’s (maybe Tank Johnson at a discount).

  • Pack4life

Tank Johnson A bona-fide criminal just what the doctor ordered :-(

  • Jeff

If we were one piece away from serious title competition and there was strong reason to believe Canty was that piece . . . I’d say go for it even at his price.

    We’re not there.

This team needs serious building on both sides of the line, youth at cornerback and a playmaking linebacker at a minimum. Get that in place, and maybe we can look at a marquee FA or two to put us over the top. In short, I think this team needs to get good before we worry about getting great. I’m not sure Ted is the guy to take us there, but I don’t see us making a leap from 6-10 to Super Bowl contention next year.

I do think Olshansky would have been an upgrade on our line, but that isn’t saying much. Tank just needs to be in a state with liberal firearms laws – and no bars. Maybe Wisconsin isn’t the best place for him.

  • Matt Hayton

    Jeff-

it’s fine to say that you don’t think we are that close to superbowl contention now, if you weren’t one of the many on this blog who thought we were still superbowl material back in August….

Most of the guys on here thought we were gonna be 10-6 to 14-2 on this blog before last season began (I predicted 7-9), because of the team surrounding AR…

You are admitting here that the 2007 team overachieved with Favre at the helm…and that really, we’ve been far away for the last 4-5 years…take Favre off of this team in 2003 and the last 5 straight seasons would have all been losing records.

Fact is 5 years ago: we had a dominant offensive line, a dominant running back, a very good defensive line (young Kampman, Grady in his prime and KGB) adequate linebackers and an adequate secondary with McKenzie, Harris and Sharper…

But over the last 5 years we’ve lost pieces to the puzzle at every position group and all we have really added, that have made their positions better than they were before they arrived, were Woodson and Jennings (Pickett for Grady Jackson was a wash)…

TT inherited a perennial playoff team: let numerous players go/retire, failed to fill those voids vai free agency and elected to draft almost, exclusively to replace them, which has not panned out and instead, it has turned us into a perennial losing to .500 squad.

Add yet the TT apologists on here believe his strategy is successful and the best course of action, yet he has single-handed thrown this team into the shitter!

  • Matt Hayton

And Larry, don’t give that “good character guys” B.S. There are plenty of teams out there that have high character guys: Gaints, Steelers, Patriots and Colts to name a few, that are winners with high character guys.

The only difference is that their football players are better than ours…not their character.

  • Michael Legat

    Evening, Hayton.

Just wanted to check in and say hey to everyone.

My take here is obvious, but I still enjoy reading the debates. Frankly, I don’t have the energy to argue what may happen and acting like it will happen. I know there’s no such thing as a true offseason anymore, but for me there’s no upside to living and dying following business transactions. (My portfolio agrees with me right now.)

Can’t wait for the season to start though. I’m optimistic – feel free to flame away all.

    Go Lakers!

  • Larry

Thanks Matt, glad you agree with me on the character issue.

  • Pete H

yes, my portfolio has become a part-folio. What does anyone else think here about Jason Taylor? He won’t be crazy priced after last year, he played that OLB spot on the Dolphins for his MVP, and thats what we need. Just my thoughts

  • iccyfan

Pete – I certainly would be excited if Jason Taylor were to become a Packer but I don’t see him as Option A either. He was reportedly cut by the ‘Skins because he wouldn’t participate in off-season workouts. He’s not entertaining any suitors for a month as he weighs his options, including an acting career. If football is still on the front burner for him, he’s got the flame turned down to 5!

My Tank Johnson comment was tongue in cheek, as I don’t even know where he’d fit into a 3-4 set. Even so, he’s only 26 or 27 and I’m pretty certain he behaved himself in Dallas; it would appear that he learned from his youthful indiscretions…

Two years ago, the Pack carried 9 D-Linemen on the final roster as TT thought they had too much quality to cut and nobody would offer a reasonable trade. Last year he traded Corey Williams in what I always felt was again a “numbers game”. We fans don’t know roster numbers for every NFL team, but it’s Ted’s job and I hope he’s identified potential acquisitions from teams which are “over-stocked”. I’m with Legat – optimistic that it’ll get done and glad we’re not throwing money around like the Redskins, Chargers & Cowboys…

  • JeffN

With Tank Johnson it all depends if the Packers front office think his character issues are behind him or not. Guys like us don’t have a good enough look inside to know whether or not he still has character issues. If his character issues are in the past by all means sign the guy. He is a good player and could play NT for us and rotate with Picket. If they think he still has character issues by all means don’t sign the guy. It’s sort of a Koren Robinson situation, maybe it work could work out maybe it wouldn’t.

Jason Taylor doesn’t seem like he is even sure if he wants to play football. If he does want to play OLB by all means sign the guy, if he wants to go do acting by all means don’t the sign the guy. Simple as that.

I think guys like Jason Taylor and Tank Johnson probably won’t get signed until sometime during training camp when teams know what they have in their 2009 draft picks and injury status players from 2008 and use these type of guys as fill out your rostor stop-gap short term type guys.

  • Roy Jamison

Parcells made the right call on Jason “Dancing with the Stars” Taylor. Jason Taylor playing in Green Bay would be as successful as Jim Taylor playing in New Orleans.

  • Roy Jamison
  • snyz

182 posts on this entry and they mind as well all read the same ‘we have character in green bay, yay us’

you guys jump on little tt but i have to agree that being proud of an 8-8 team because they have fewer arrests just baffles me.

i mean, after we lose a game, do you say to yourself, as you crack your miller lite, “well, at least AJ Hawk is still ugly.”

i tried to start a thread discussing the executive committe, the future collective bargaining agreement, etc. ignored. too much to chew there, i guess. let’s discuss the stats of the lombardi era some more…

  • Pack4life

Online the Denver Post is reporting Jay Cutler has put his house for sale. Speculation he is going to the Lions. That will change that team overnight. I am not comfortable with the thougt of Cutler in our division.

  • Roy Jamison

snyz, I don’t think anyone can be proud of an 8-8 team. GB is a unique market where people will support the team no matter the record…much like Cubs fans. As far as the CBA, yeah I have brought it up myself. Hopefully, some sort of the cap is retained or teams like GB will be at a big disadvantage.
But, sports is a business. Where are all the big bucks? In LA or NY or Dallas. What big company exists in GB to buy the luxury suites they will be selling in Dallas? Or the luxury suites in the new Yankee stadium for that matter? The notion of no single owner for a franchise is a blessing and a curse. Before uncle Bob Harlan, the Packers simply stunk for a long long time. Bob had a vision, much like a single owner would. He ran the show much like Clint William Murchison, Jr. He let Wolf run his part of the puzzle, and Holmgren was allowed to run his part. The common thread was they all were dedicated to winning. Murchison let Tex Schramm run the show in Dallas and Schramm let Landry be successful. Those are proven models of running a football business. TT has a little bit different set of circumstances to deal with than Wolf. While I don’t question his dedication to winning, I wonder if his ineffective communication skills will ultimately be his downfall.

  • The Truth

The Packers are in the upper half in revenue every year. How many shares of “new” stock would every fan buy if it meant keeping or losing the team? Seriously, how many thousands would you spend? I would spend many. QUIT USING MONEY AS AN EXCUSE.

You can all trash me and pretend like I am new here when in fact I have been posting under multiple user names over the course of a few years. And no, I am not Jon. I have never been as aggressive before (well sort of with the fiasco last summer), but I am fed up. As everyone on here should be. So you can ignore me or not, but I will continue to point out the stupidity either way. Larry, I know you’re reading this. Someone needs to express outrage. What we are seeing is ridiculous and this team is WAY more than TT. I could not give a shit about him. If he wins I am happy, if not he is bad at his job. What happens if you are bad at your job? I guess at your places of employment everyone sits around and tells the shitty worker how good they are.

I’ll bite Snyz. Can someone give me some insight into the exec committee? How often is there turnover? They basically just get pushed through I assume?

Don’t worry Larry, one day I will disappear. Only to reappear under a different name. Like magic.

  • The Truth

    This will be fun.

Assuming Curry, Crabtree, Stafford, Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe are gone who do people think would be a good draft choice? My top 2 are orakpo and raji but there is a good chance they are both gone also.

If all of the above are gone who do you take? Me…Andre Smith. Ok, monkeys throw the banana. He is one of those high risk/reward players with questionable attitude. Oh, and he likely will be by far the most talented player available and would start immedietely. Don’t worry, it will be a cold day in hell before TT takes him. For the record, he will have a better career than whoever the packers take (if it is not one of the top 7 above).

Who do you think the Pack will take if none of the first 7 are available? I will go with Clay Matthews. Yes that’s right, the highest rated white player left on their board. Football family. Great character. Mediocre talent at best.

  • The Truth

Please, please don’t match Jarrett Bush’s offer sheet.

  • Larry

Roy, after reading “all of the above” I sure would not be proud of 8-8, but would consider it an improvement over the 6-10 even if a great disappointment. However, I still would be proud of the Green Bay Packers. The TTs and the MMs come and go, so they really dont matter, but the record from year to year doesnt put me on a roller coaster either like some of the young pups.

  • The Truth

Larry, I could not have said it better myself. Old fans ate shit for over 2 decades and became complacent and uncondionally “proud”. This is ridiculous and thank Christ the team has fans who won’t settle for mediocrity.

My love is unconditional but my pride certainly isn’t. For instance, I bet Joe Philbin loves his rapist son, but do you think he is currently proud of him?

Or should we run them out of town due to bad character?

  • The Truth

By the way Al, I know you can do better than the current poll question. I do hate TT, but that is not the right choice to the question. ARod is the QB and this is old news. You can come up with something more thought provoking than that

  • jonnyfootballhero

The current Packernet Poll is the dumbest question I’ve seen asked on this site so far. Come on man, come up with something better than that!

  • RayL

It appears that TT, MM are sticking to their plan of trying to build through the draft/find a diamond in the rough. If after last season, they still think they can stand pat and not go out and make some Free AGency moves then they are incompetent. I mean it is blatantly obvious that they are lost in the sauce. ANyone who paid $85.00 to hear TT speak about their plan for the future of the Packers and are in agreement with them, well then you are part of the problem not part of the solution. It sickens me to watch this arrogant asshole be in charge of the Pack. Where in the %^$## is Murphy in all of this? Who put these clowns in charge and why aren’t they doing anything about the apathy of TT. If he thinks he is gonna make a serious run for the SB with this team he is nuts…I have been patiently waiting, giving him every chance to allow his plan to develop. I’m sorry but his time is up. If at the end of the year, they make it to the playoffs and make a serios run for the SB then I will eat crow. But. I seriously doubt it…

  • Larry

I cant imagine why these descentors are Packer fans, why? What is it about the history, current ops, or future that keeps them following the team when they dont support it, encourage it, or like anything about it? Please, just one of you, explain why you’re Packer fans.

  • Roy Jamison

Larry, I think we need to watch that movie “Hud” for the answer.

  • Larry

Oooh, Roy, thats severe; Ruthless young men who like to destroy everything they touch? Not my original comment, I had to look it up.

  • paul

You old fuckers need to get over this “I’m proud shit.” Or I would rather lose with character than to win with thugs. One can be a fan and be pissed off at the team, management, players, etc. I have been passionate about the Pack since I can remember and the worst years were the 70′s and 80′s when we would say “We’ll get ‘em next year.” Never missed a game, never strayed.

The character comes from the top down. Randy Moss in an undisciplined system like Oakland sucks, under the expectations of a class team like the Patriots (whom I hate by the way), he is productive and character is not an issue. It is from the top down how your players act…for the most part…also, many people call me an old fucker too….but they are in their 20′s.

  • Jeff

Matt – I’m actually close to your camp on this one. The 2008 season had me very worried due to the O-line, D-line, DBs (aside from our starting CBs) and the lack of QB experience. I don’t recall exactly who did it, but somebody gave me a pretty thorough trashing over that position telling me how foolish I was being and how good all the young d-linemen were going to be. Might have been CheesyD.

I had hoped for better than 6-10 but wasn’t particularly shocked.

I do think we overachieved in 2007.

I’m a Packer fan in spite of being unhappy because that’s the way I was raised. I haven’t always been proud over the years either, but I’ll tell you this much; I was far more embarassed by our team back in the days of Ken Stills, Mossy Cade, and Charles Martin than I was last year with a 6-10 record.

Paul makes a reasonable point about leadership, but at least some of that leadership has to come from your players. A team full of louts with a class organization above it is still a team full of louts. Changing it around would require more than just a change in management.

As for eating shit and liking it, I’ll speak my peace, but I have no delusions about anybody listening to it. I’ll tolerate a couple losing seasons and still watch the games on Sunday. However, if we went back to some of the garbage we were forced to watch back in those Forrest Gregg years, I’ll vote with me feet and let the fuckers know why – just like I did back then. Sometimes disgrace is worse than losing.

    /rant

  • The Truth

This “what is a packer fan” discussion really needs to stop. I will watch 16 games a year every year. I have season tickets starting this year and although I live too far away to get to every one, I will be at several. MY LOVE IS FOR THE TEAM, NOT MANAGMENT. Hell, I am not in love with that many of the players on this team, but I love the TEAM. Fuck the management. And fuck you Larry if you are too stupid too understand the difference. I have friends who are always optimistic (until someone gets fired/trades/cut, then hindsight is always 20/20), and we can have passionate, meaningful discussions about the team. But you assholes who think criticism means someone is not a fan…hell I don’t even think it is an age thing. I know plenty of people in their 50′s and 60′s who are fed up with TT’s BS…it is more of a intelligence thing.

  • Larry

tt, you cant answer the question of WHY you are a Packer fan by saying you are a Packer fan! I understand passion, and know what a meaningful discussion is, but why do you bother if you dont know why? Isnt that just HABIT? (not unlike an animal)

  • RayL

I love America but hate Barack Obamas decisions and views and I love the Packers and hate TT’s decisons and views…….he will be gone in a year or 2
