Favre, Cutler have one thing in common

One has to look hard at the problems the Denver Broncos are having with star quarterback Jay Cutler and wonder if the agent isn’t the problem. The agent, Bus Cook, was also the agent of the greatest soap opera in NFL history last year when he led the Brett Favre comeback. Seems like making everybody feel sorry for your client is a Cook specialty. Like a little kitten, Cook’s clients need to be petted, hugged and kissed. They need to feel the love, but this is the NFL, the Not For Love league.

If Cook couldn’t get the Packers to give in to Brett Favre, what exactly does he expect from playing the same “woe is me” game with Cutler? Obviously now it comes down to more money. Cook doesn’t have a stable of clients like some agents, and while he made a ton off of Favre, he still needs to feed the family. My guess is this game of emotion comes down to more money. One more big bonus for Cook and an extension in Denver for Cutler.

Bottom line is it was clear early on last year that Cook was pushing Favre to come back thinking he could get a trade to a team Favre wanted, in the end all Cook got was a trade to “Siberia,” and those are Favre’s words, not mine. If I’m Favre, I’d have to be wondering am I mad at the wrong guys?

I was glad to hear Packers’ president Mark Murphy say the Packers were still committed to retiring Favre’s number and it will just be a matter of time. In other words, the ball is in Favre’s court. I hope Favre doesn’t wait until Ted Thompson is gone because I think that will be a long time and that is not right to the fans who where down with Favre from the get-go.

Bus Cook needs some love. How can we help?

Well put Larry, lets just all try to keep in mind that insults that are more intelligently constructed than others are still insults…If you throw one out there it will get responded to.

  • Pete H

As far as the draft, I don’t really have a “guy”. I don’t think trading down some is even such a bad idea this year. If there is a tackle, DL, or LB that can be had later in the first, and they could pick up an extra pick, I would be all for it…..just not another WR.

  • JeffN

I’m going to wait until after the draft to get into another rukus. Don’t get me wrong I love the rukus just want it to stay clean.

I already gave my 2 cents on the pre-draft discussion but just to refresh your memories.

R1) BJ Raji – he probably won’t be there so we probably end up with Everette Brown by default. If there are any takers for a trade up or a trade down I think that will happen in preference to taking Brown. If we trade up it will be a 3rd and a 4th to get Raji, if there are no takers they will attempt to trade down and pick up an extra 2nd, if no takers we end up with Brown. Yes Raji is important enough for even TT to trade up for.

R2) Jaron Gilbert or Tyson Jackson – I think one of them will still be on the board when they pick. Probably and preferably Gilbert.

Still haven’t heard from most on pre-draft. Would love to read it.

  • Lew

Wow poor little JeffyN got offended by language. You are on a football blog bro,. quit being such a pussy

  • Pete H

You are on an internet blog, quit being such a dumbass

  • Larry

For the life of me I could not find that guy Lew recomended on the potential draftee list; certainly not a 1st rounder. Maybe he mis-spelled the name.

  • Boothie

Great comment Lew. We’ll be sure to respect your opinion on things.

    Good Night.

  • Jeff

I’ve seen mocks that show both Brian Orapko and Raji being available at #9. As I pay very little attention to college ball, I tend to keep my mouth tight about the draft. That said, I did manage to see both of those guys play last year and would be happy to see either one in Green and Gold.

Larry – if you really want to hear about why I’m a Packer fan, I will get more detailed for you, but I don’t want to do it here and now. Drop a line to jaybee@gbpackersfan.com, and I will write you a heartfelt essay. As an alternative, perhaps Al would be so kind as to furnish you with the email I use when I post here.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Wishful thinking but my guess is that we miss out on Raji, so we’ll trade down. We have a chance to get either Tyson Jackson to fill a DE spot or Larry English as a pass rusher and still could fill the nose tackle position in the high second round with Ron Brace.

  • Monty

More from Europe. Good news baseball is just a week away…bad news…the draft is still a month a way…so here are some rumors for you to ponder about the GBP’s.

Packers are thinking about making an offer for OT Levi Jones.

If on the board Green Bay will not pass on NT B.J. Raji.

Green Bay will and or are listening to teams asking about QB Brian Brohm who if in this draft would be ranked ahead of Josh Freeman.

Green Bay has spent a lot of effort viewing OT’s in the Pro Days workouts they go to.

Green Bay says they are pretty set with the DB units and at LB but the need for an inside DL and a true 3-4 (5 technique) DE is real.

Green Bay is extremely interested in CB/FS Mark Parson 5-10 1/2 194 (Ohio U.)

Any other rumors for us to ponder? Please post, and if you all really have to get into this personal he said she said bs about name calling etc take it to another board. I prefer to read factional statements and/or opinions on the Packers and what we think they should or shouldnt do then listen to some of you immature dolts arguing about name calling. Post intelligently or go visit your mama.

  • Pete H

What you hope is that in transitioning to a 3-4, MM is thinking that the Packers have players that are already better suited for a 3-4 than a 4-3.

  • Larry

Was reviewing some NFL Pro-Day film on RBs and was blown away by the moves, quickness, and speed of a few of them. Don’t know what the #s were regarding times, etc. but just watching they looked incredible. I realize that tryouts don’t equate to game, but is it off the wall to think TT might go there at 2nd RND especially if we were to trade down and pick up more picks? Grant seems to be the kind of back that fits the old DEN running scheme with one cut, but Jackson hasn’t developed into that change of pace guy that can go outside. To counter Monty, I do think a good coach alters the scheme to fit the talent you have or else you’re faced with starting all over again and you can’t do that with 22 people quick enough. The change to 3-4 had to be based on talent on board, then bringing in Capers to run and teach it. If our guys are any good at all in it its got to raise havoc in the rest of the NFC North just preparing for it. Back to running the ball our stats weren’t as bad as they looked on the field to the naked eye; we did lack the speed though in my way of thinking.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Monty, that was a well thought out article. This season will reveal whether TT is a good GM, mediocre or incapable of bringing in the talent needed to support the coaches schemes.

  • Larry

Optimism: We got a QB at 24th who’s stats were top ten, a starting RB for a 6th Rnd pick, young OL averaging 2yrs exp. with playing time in, short on DL so are going to 3-4 to utilize our LB strength, a 1st RND DT who is fresh w/ no wear and tear on him, 2 Pro Bowl DBs, 3 safeties who can move and hit, K and P with distance; best team in the NFC North. Oh, did I mention the best WR corps in the NFL. Our concerns; TE, DE, NT, age at CB,OT? How about 4 in 84 or more if we trade down? Still some value FAs out there I’m sure. If we took a high WR do you think any of our current WRs would be worth something in a DL trade?

  • Pete H

There is optimism there, but who is this 1st rnd DT with no wear and tear? Also, best WR corps in the NFL? Fitzgerald, Boldin, Breaston? Awfully good three…we may be deeper, but man thats tough to stop. Tell you what though, I like what I saw from Finley. I also like Jackson…he is not so much an outside change of pace, but he definatley brings more speed and agility than Grant between the tackles. I would still like to see what Jason Taylor has left in the tank…I’m telling you 1 year removed from a defensive MVP award, on the Dolphins no less, where he played that OLB spot that GB needs to fill. As far as what Wrs might be worth something, I don’t know, other than Jennings. Driver is pushing the age , Nelson is still unproven, and not a ridiculous talent that can’t be found in the draft or on the open market, and Jones has been hurt too much…and I don’t want to let Jennings go for nothing. Its way too hard to find a WR who is good and not a prick.

  • Larry

Yeah, you’re right, but isn’t Driver the exception because of the shape he keeps himself in? The reason I didn’t consider AZ was I’ve heard two stories coming out of there; 1) Fitz was willing to give back to make Boldin happy, and 2) they didn’t get along, who really knows? Taylor worth a look and a try, but I hate to bring in guys for a year only. Didn’t he want to go to LA and be a movie star ala Jim Brown in his prime? Harrell, I’m not aware if the back was a football injury. Like your take on Finley, ’cause I didn’t see him down here in DAL/HOU country. Same with Jackson, I don’t read many posts that like him and a lot don’t think him worth the #2. My real concern, I guess, is at OT, but when you get a good one it seems they’re there forever.

  • Jeff

I always thought Jackson looked more like a power run game back than a cut-and-go kinda guy, but there were times that he looked very good last year. I’m actually pretty hopeful about our RBs. My hand-wringing over the Oline has already been done.

The article Monty posted raised a solid point about going to a scheme you don’t really have the talent for, but Capers said right up front that the 3-4 was a goal and he was going to be making a major effort to scheme for the players he has rather than try to force them into a straight 3-4. I was very happy to read that and have some reasonable confidence that Capers can walk the walk.

  • roy jamison

Monty, thanks for the article. There’s plenty of food for thought in those words. The modus operandi for the last four years has been, “If it ain’t broke, fix it anyway.”

  • Pete H

My thinking on the one year deal with Taylor is to use him as a transistion piece. Maybe guys could learn from him until his replacement turns up. Sometimes a stop gap can be very beneficial. Fitzgerald isn’t giving back, he will renegotiate, which simply means more money up front and guaranteed….Harrel may not be worn and torn from football, but he seems pretty worn and torn in general. I just haven’t seen Jackson do anything poorly….he catches, runs through some tacklers, shows a good burst…I think he mostly gets left behind because of the way Grant took off. Could be wrong though

  • Monty

Hey Guys, glad to pass an article that pretty much summed up what I think is wrong with the current leadership of the Packers. Like all of you, I just want us to have a sound foundation and future to win. I know sometimes I can get emotional (isnt that our right as fans?) but I try to stay focused and just want what is best for the best football team in the NFL. I just think that one first has to have a sound football plan and not just go with what is trendy at the moment. Of course the NFL is the biggest copy cat league, but to me it just seems that we have not established a solid O-Line for a strong running game. Again I make the point (and I am quoting Thompson here) because we play Packer football in December (outside cold in the mud) if you are gonna make it to the post season you have to be able to run the ball. On the D side of the ball you have to be able to stop the run. Its one reason we couldnt put the Giants away in the Championship game in 07. Now I might be in the minority, but I just think we do not currently have true “3-4″ players. Thompson has taken 4 years just to build our line to what it is today for the ZBS, he really doesnt have the time I think to build us to a true 3-4 defense as the article I posted stated. I really think that if we suffer another losing season, then Big Mike is looking for offensive coordinator positions, next year and Ted gets one more year. I mean come on this is his 5th year and I do not feel confident that we have what is needed to put a winning team on the field. You know after Bart Starr retired, we had a couple of QB’s that played ok, but they couldnt win. Thats my fear, we had such a nice run, I mean 13 years of winning seasons, it was GREAT. As everyone has said its just the beginning of the new season so lets see how things look in August, one cant really determind how your team will play in March. Go Pack!!

  • Matt Hayton

    JeffN-

I apologize for the namecalling…no, if’s and’s or but’s…hopefully the hatchet is buried and we can move forward.

  • Matt Hayton

    Larry-

you referenced me making long posts after midnight…fyi – live ont he west coast, only 10:30pm for me.

As far as why I am still a packer fan…I find this question to be ironinc. You state yourself as a loyal fan and are choosing to see glass as half-full w/the current management. I see the glass-half empty. But isn’t it just as loyal, to disagree with some element of an organization and still support the team, in spite of not seeing eye-to-eye with the powers that be? I for one believe that disagreements are the ultimate test of loyalty…it’s easy to support an organization when everything is going well and you agree with every decision, but when you don’t disagree, your loyalty is challenged. A person of character and integrity remains loyal (all-be-it, merely sports fanhood, in this case), even when you disagree.

From a patriotic standpoint, if I would take this approach, I would have moved to Canada in late January. Just because I don’t see eye-to-eye with the current President, doesn’t mean that I lose hope in the nation as a whole.

  • Pete H

What, you don’t like taxpayers financially supporting companies that have no business being around anymore? (pun intended)

  • Larry

In reflection, Matt, I was being pretty disrespectful and didn’t give you credit for the thought behind your comments. We who don’t think the sky has fallen get frustrated too when mgmt doesn’t get credit for trying to do the right thing, albeit even if mistakes are made. Just think the good outweighs the bad, but I’m falling into that PAST trap. You can be damned sure Pete H that I could care less about 1% of the banks failing because of bad management, even if Freddy and Fanny are govt entities they can’t go under because congress would feel obligated to prop them up. Wrong post, perhaps, but you can bet the owners are going to cry poverty because of the economic situation in DC. Hell, these words don’t belong here, damn it!

  • Pete H

I know I know, just wanted to see if I could get people more riled up than we do about TT..

  • Pete H

We open at home against the damn Bears. Good, lets go squash those bastards on national TV

  • Matt Hayton

Good call, Larry. I think if we sat down for a couple of beers, we’d probably agree more than we disagree …Pete H, finally something we can all agree on…drilling the Bears, to open the season!

  • JeffN

I’m fine to move on at this point.

Just for the record I wasn’t specifically questioning whether or not anyone was a fan or not. I was just more asking why people wanted to be if they hated everything that was going on. Maybe people’s passion got the best of them and they post worse that what it actually is? (kind of like yelling at your dog when it trashes the Christmas tree or chews up some of your favorite family pictures) I’ll take that as an answer but will stand corrected if someone tells me different.

  • Kelly

    Admin….
Thank heavens I never paid money for this site. I’m gone for good (not that I’ve been around for the last year anyway). Favre rules….always has…always will….No one will remember Ted Thompson in 10 years, except as the man who threw Favre under the bus (and not just on one occasion).

  • Jeff

    JeffN –

There is a lot I like about this team. I focus on the weak points because I believe that’s how you improve. If I gave the impression that I hate everything that’s going on and am generally miserable as a fan, I was really barking in the wrong key.

I was miserable back in the years of Charles Martin, Ken Stills, Mossy Cade and the Hit Towels. During those years, I really didn’t enjoy being a fan. It was, quite honestly, embarassing. Today’s team is nothing like that – we’re just going through a rough patch.

Personally, I think Ted Thompson is part of the problem, but I recognize that opinions vary. It’s a new year, and the team Mr Thompson is putting together can prove me wrong and win me over pretty easily. (Larry, was there a problem with my metaphor of passing the white sauce so I could eat crow properly? I can’t imagine having crow with a marinara . . . a nice cheese sauce maybe . . . )
