Thompson shows another side

Was that really Ted Thompson pulling the strings for the Green Bay Packers this past weekend? Even the Thompson bashers have to be fairly happy with what transpired in 2009 NFL Draft. The Packers ended up with two first-round picks who in my opinion will be starters on opening day. In B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews the Packers have the cornerstones for their transition to a 34 defense and when you add in Nick Barnett, A.J. Hawk and Aaron Kampman, the Packers’ linebackers are looking pretty damn good. With Raji, Ryan Pickett and Cullen Jenkins up front, the Packers are ready to make the switch with immediate results. Of course , improving over last year’s sieve won’t be hard to do.

I think Thompson was just doing what he always said he would do. He used the draft to build the core of the team and when that was done he was ready to make a bold move like the one to get Matthews. One thing about Thompson is he believes in what he is doing, he doesn’t BS you and he is not afraid of the consequences of his beliefs. Thompson  believes last year’s record was not because of a lack of talent on the team and thinks the Packers are going to be a contender. Thompson won’t say it, but we all know last year’s Brett Favre fiasco was a huge distraction and I directly contribute it to the team’s record. This offseason is the complete opposite.

Sure there are question marks about both Raji and Matthews, but there are question marks about all first-round picks. If you dig that deep into somebody’s history, you will almost always find something. Nobody is perfect. I like these guys and I think they both have Pro Bowl potential and will be with the Packers for a long time. One thing is sure, the Packers, Thompson, and head coach Mike McCarthy need them to be just that or the later two will likely both be looking for jobs in a year or two. I think they got it right this time and I can’t wait to see them on the field.

Day two of the draft was even more a sign that Thompson has changed his thinking toward this team and the draft. It was all need picks. Offensive lineman T.J. Lang will be given every opportunity to replace Mark Tauscher at right guard and I think he might even be the front-runner based solely on his competition. I think the same can be said for fullback Quinn Johnson, a bruiser who is unselfish and is a good fit for the west coast offense the Packers use. He loves to block and is a much more physical presence than any of the fullbacks currently on the roster.

A couple of other guys I like are Jamon Meredith, the offensive tackle from South Carolina and the d-back from Cincinnati, Brandon Underwood, just a hunch on the later. Nonetheless, it was a good weekend for the Green Bay Packers. Their NFC North rivals shored up on offense and the Packers shored up on defense. I like it. Hopefully some of the venom for Thompson will wane a little bit in the next few months so we can focus on the team and get ready for the 2009 season.

Even with rookie camp this weekend and OTAs and minicamp still to come, it is going to be a long three months waiting for training camp. But all of a sudden things aren’t so glum in Titletown. The offense is already in place with a young soon-to-be star quarterback in Aaron Rodgers and superstar in the making in Greg Jennings at wide receiver, a good running game and an improving offensive line. If the defense follows suit, good things are ahead for this team. You gotta’ believe.

    Michael Legat – well said.

I do submit, however, if the Packers were to sign Chuck Norris the Lombardi trophy would return to where it belongs.

Michael, good point. However getting rid of Wahle, Sharper and Rivera and replacing them with Klemm, Whittaker and Roman doesn’t sound like a winning strategy. More important right now is keeping together the best talent in the division(courtesy of TT). Do you think the contracts for Jennings, Collins, etc. will be done in a timely fashion or be allowed to fester to the last minute like with Grant. With recriminations about greedy players and awful agents and the rest of the PR crap?

  • Michael Legat

I would be completely gobsmacked if Greg Jennings isn’t given a contract fatter than Raji and Gilbert Brown combined. I imagine there’ll be a bit of a game of chicken with Collins, but since he’s a potential long-term anchor for this defense, he’ll be handsomely compensated as well.

  • Matt Hayton

Michael, I would agree I would dismiss anyone who said X moves would guarantee a SB victory, that is just foolish. I was careful to say making those moves would have made us “Super Bowl Caliber team”…and given us “the opportunity to win an SB”.

There are no guarantees in the NFL, I get that …’02 Rams, ’03 Raiders and ’07 Patriots, all come to mind as teams this century that should’ve won the SB- were clearly the better team, but didn’t get it done. But that is also the very reason why I thought letting all of those guys walk and replacing them with a bunch of no-names was pretty foolish in the first place. Any given franchise only gets so many opportunities to win a SB and when you are close, it’s seems to make sense to me to do everything in your power to get over the top to get the job done…

Legat, I have to respectfully disagree, Raji isn’t really that fat. He is just thick and wide with only a small gut. This guy is almost all muslce which really impresses me. Gilber Brown yes he was fat. Raji is Gilbert Brown with quickness and speed.

Hayton, while I see how passionate you are about your opinions… your dislike for TT has made you talk yourself into thinking that the later part of Sherman managed era was just several players away from a superbowl. From a personel perspective that time period was the lowest point this team was at since the 80s. Quit torchering yourself by talking yourself into that kind of stuff. Your dislike for TT doesn’t have to be a big deal. Take it easy man.

  • Matt Hayton

But, alas, enough dead-horse kicking…I am actually very excited about the moves TT made in the draft and am looking forward to ’09…which is alot funner than could’ve, should’ve, would’ve in ’06-’08…

Like our team much better now, still think they are probably 2 years away from competing deep into the playoffs, but I’m hoping for a wildcard or sneaking away the division in one of the last weeks of the eyear.

And if any of you are wondering…if Favre puts on a Vikings jersey, that to me would be vengeful and selfish and as much as I think he was wronged by the Packers, that is far worse to hold onto a personal vendetta and make 52 guys subject to you settling the score with your former GM…I hope we beat the hell out of him and the queens…

Loyalty? Let me know when you find it.

The consensus on this draft here is that most think this draft is going to be huge and produce huge results. I agree with that. I think within the next 2 seasons we are going to see 3 to 4 starters out of this draft maybe 5 if both Lang and Maredith start but I think only 1 of those 2 will end up starting which leaves us with Raji, Mathews, and Quin Johnson all as guys who will not only start but are expected to have big impacts as starters.

One thing I think is important to keep in mind. Don’t expect this big of a draft to happen every year or you are just setting yourself up for disappointment. Not only should we not be drafting any higher than 25 in the next years, things fell perfectly in this draft for us. We were drafting high and got lucky with the way the chips fell. Although every once and while a high calibur draft comes along. In 2005 we got Rodgers, Collins, and Bigby. In 2006 we got Hawk, Jennings, College, Spitz. But this 2009 draft is going to take the cake IMO. We will see for sure over the next couple years.

Anyone that think the roster was a cpl moves away from winning a S.B. or ANYTHING else when MR. Thomspson took over as G.M. needs to has his eyes OPENED.

Shermans last year as GM yes they made the playoffs, BACKED IN by having he Viking lose a game.
With the 10-6 record that team DID NOT BEAT A TEAM WITH A WINNING RECORD!

Shermans TOTALLY REDICULOUS Drafts and TERRIBLE cap moves is what KILLED the team and lead to having to have it REBUILT.

Wahle was made the HIGHEST PAID GUARD EVER in the NFL with his move to Carolina.
Packers were in the RED, OVER THE SALARY CAP.

What made the Packers make the change to Mr. Thompson was Shermans TOTAL MESS of the core players on the team and Salary cap.

The team was heading to a 4-12 season at a break neck speed, it was as close to dead as you can get.
But Green and Gold glasses keeps Favre fanatics and the Mr. Thompson haters from seeing it.

What you have is a bunch of spoiled fans with little realistic views of what was really happening.

The team needed to be rebuilt top to bottom.

I really love the players in there PRIME post. Look at what all those players that were released or traded REALLY did at there other teams and what they did while still with the Packers.
Green NOTHING, Rivera NOTHING, Franks NOTHING, Hawk and Poppinga not better then Diggs and Lenon?
Ferguson? That one REALLY kills me.
There is a Difference betwen OLD and NEVER HAVE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Waiting for Favre to be gone? REMOVE your lips from Favres butt.

Favre HURT this team with his I might play I might NOT play YEAR after YEAR.
And then when he is doing it he pulls a fit because Mr. Thompson drafts a QB. He had his own Locker room, His own Parking space IN THE STADIUM.
And had the gall to say TT took away HIS team.
His EGO got to big that he thought himself BIGGER then the team, BIGGER then the Packers.

The PACKERS board did what was needed to be done, REMOVE Mike Sherman, Get the Salary cap under control, REBUILD the team for the LONG TERM Life of the the team, Bring in a coach that was NOT going to kiss Favres butt and TRY and get him to play the game as a TEAM player.

Mr Thompson and MIke McCarthy gave Brett Favre the BEST CHANCE to win a Super Bowl since Holmgren was there.
And he THREW IT AWAY with ANOTHER of his MOMENTOUS STUPID passes and RETIRING when he was offered ANYTHING he needed to make it easier for him to return to the TEAM that took him to the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP game the year before.

ONLY to have his HUGE DIVA EGO change his mind one month later and was OK’d to come back and then CHANGE his mind again and say I’m staying retired.
THen wait UNTIL training camp to change his mind again and demand the team drop EVERYTHING the rest of the players had done in the off season when he was retired.

WAKE UP and LOOK at what has REALLY gone on, without your Brett Favre Jersey on without your Green and Gold glasses.
