Things I think

I think the people bitching at me for bringing up Brett Favre are the ones who know I’m right and don’t want to hear it anymore. I don’t either, but Favre playing for the Vikings directly affects the Packers, unlike last year when Favre was in Siberia. Packers’ fans still wouldn’t stop talking about him and ripping Ted Thompson in the process, hence the moratorium on Brett Favre. Now that the storm has blown over, and I believe in my heart that Favre will stay retired rather than go through six months of pain just for the shot to beat the Packers twice, which is highly unlikely. So unless I’m wrong I’m putting a moratorium on myself regarding the waffle king. You do what you want.

I think the Packers are in serious need of a running back. The list of Ryan Grant, DeShawn Wynn, Brandon Jackson, Kregg Lumpkin and Tyrell Sutton do not exactly strike fear in the hearts of their opponents. Looks like Aaron Rodgers might be throwing 40 times a game this year.  I mean Grant is OK, but he needs to prove his worth this year or the Packers overpaid for him. Behind Grant, Lumpkin might be the best of the worst. Wynn and Jackson get hurt when the wind blows and Sutton wasn’t even drafted. The worse problem is there isn’t anybody out there to get. I hope Lumpkin’s injury last year wasn’t a career killer, as he is clearly the most talented of the backups.

I think I’m really getting sick of the talk about how hard it is to switch from a 43 defense to a 34 defense. The Packers have an abundance of linebackers to play the scheme and plenty of candidates to fill the three lineman positions. You have to wonder if this wasn’t the plan all along. The media is way off on this one.

I think it is going to be a uneventful June and July for the Green Bay Packers and I thank the good Lord for that after what we went through last year. What a joy it will be to just focus on the mini-camps and OTAs and not have to worry about that other stuff. I bet the players feel the same way and I truly believe the opposite of last year will occur – instead of a dark cloud to start the season, as Johnny Nash would say, “it’s gonna be a bright, bright, bright, sunshiny day.”

I think if the Packers do flop this year and Ted Thompson gets fired I would love to see The Big Show come back to Green Bay. Mike Holmgren has always understood the history and tradition of the Packers and returning them to glory for a second time might appeal to him. He could bring in Jon Gruden as head coach and it might be just like old times.

I think Nick Collins is an idiot. He is very replaceable and the Packers shouldn’t throw big money to a guy who is letting down his teammates by not being in town learning the new defense. Family issue my ass. Does he deserve a new contract? Maybe. But one good year out of four and you turn into T.O.? If it was up to me it would be so long and good riddance. With a new DC, everybody is starting fresh, which means Collins isn’t even guaranteed a starting job no matter what he did last year. Dom Capers will play the players who give him the best chance to succeed and with Collins staying at home he could very well be out of a job if he doesn’t wise up. Personally, I hope he holds out and the Packers replace him.

I think the Packers new practice field is going to be awesome. Finally we won’t have to look through a chain-link fence to watch the team at training camp. Can’t believe it took this long, but getting Lambeau redone was the top priority I guess.

I think I might not have much to say for a few weeks. Golf season is here. Baseball is boring. Minicamp isn’t until June 22. Take a break.

I think I’m going to have a cocktail now.

Barack Obama, Brett Favre, an old hippie, and an even older priest were all on a plane that was going down & doomed to crash. (the pilot had already bailed out)

There were only 3 parachutes which meant only 3 of the four would survive the crash. Which 3 would survive & how could they even choose who would live?? It was a difficult dilemma.

They decided that each would give reasons why they should get one of the parachutes & thus live to tell the tale.

Barack Obama spoke first. “ I’m the president of the free world. I am the most powerful person on the planet. Plus, I still need to fix the economy, stop Iran, fix the healthcare system, stop global warming, etc. etc. etc. ” – The old hippie, the older priest & even Brett Favre agreed with Barack Obama. -Obama then approached the door & jumped out of the plane.

Brett Favre spoke next. “ I am the greatest player in the NFL. All the football fans across the world love me. I’m rich, talented & a good ole boy. I still need to gain revenge against TT, MM & all those gullible PackFans across this country. – But most of all, I am the smartest QB in the history of the NFL. “ The old hippie & older priest agreed with Brett Favre. – Favre then approached the door & jumped out of the plane.

At this time, the old hippie turned to the even older priest and said: “Father, I have lived a long life & have done many bad things during my life. You take the last parachute & save yourself. “

The priest then turned to the old hippie & said: “ Don’t worry my son, the smartest QB in the history of the NFL just grabbed your backpack & jumped out of the plane. ”

    Lame, Rocky, just lame.

I think we lost both Sean Jones and Keith Jackson after that Super Bowl win over New England. I remember wanting to kill Gabe Wilkens that game. Was completely bummed out and sad for a week after. After stomping the 49ers on the road in the championship game I felt like that Packer’s club was going to stamp there name on history with back to back SB wins, but alas, was not to be.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Me too………. They should have told Wilkens just to play the run every down and leave the pass rush to REGGIE and the others. Maybe he’d stood a chance then?? Then again, probably not.
That joke looks craigslist familiar tonight, except you replaced the smartest man on earth w/BF. That’s a fair swap. Favre: “Why shucks, I thinks I’ll git me gun to shoot varments whilst I mow that there lawn” “Then I’llst go have a couple beerz by the cement pond with Bus and git to figuring out how to keep things stirred up real good like!!” Well, maybe not quite a fair swap…………

  • http://Orlando Mark

Pretty sad Rocky. You may have a lot of contempt for a guy that survived 18 years in the NFL but from your posts I don’t understand why. Did he take any games off, or did he go out there week after week and do the best he could. Maybe you could have done better, hell maybe you did do better and we just don’t know it. Please enlighten us.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Funny story about taking a game off. If I remember right, Lynn Dickey was supposed to play a rematch against the ’85 Bears(a great defensive team that sacked him 5 times 13 days earlier) but developed really bad headaches that week and couldn’t play. His replacement got his leg broken on his first pass and Jim Zorn(who still had some mobility) had to finish up. Now that’s what I call using your head.

  • Rocky70

Obviously, the Favre Apologists also have no sense of humor.

BF has turned into the butt of many jokes which includes the web, comedy clubs, late night television & even other players.

Don’t blame me. BF brought all this on himself.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Rocky, I thought that Lynn Dickey story was a lot funnier than your sad attempt at humor. The only thing #4 brought on himself was getting older and still wanting to play. I’ve seen a lot of athletes try to hang on and it isn’t very funny, well maybe just a little bit.

  • packer_bob

I have a sense of humor—just that re-tread of a joke was LAME!

Never heard that Lynn Dickey story before–is that really true?

  • http://Orlando Mark

BTW, three other QB’s lost to the Giants in the ’07 playoffs. No one talked about getting rid of Brady or Romo. Just #4 and Garcia and only because of their age. Warner was the butt of jokes going from team to team trying to earn a starting job and didn’t even get a contract to play next year till after the SB. Montana, Layne, Unitas, Namath you could make a long list and I’m sure getting old and wanting to play wasn’t funny to those guys.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Packer_bob, true story. Forrest Gregg was too rigid and old school to realize that at 36 Dickey’s arm was strong but his legs were gone. The Bears would have killed him like they did on the previous game. Zorn actually gave us a good chance to win the game and we needed Dickey for the rest of the season. I remember thinking at the time that was one of the smartest moves he ever made whether on purpose or not.

  • Larry

Another subject. It appears that one of the reasons that the Pack has been so patient with Harrell is that he really doesn’t cost us that much. I still think he has the potential to be great (read: extreme hope to prove my case that he might not be a total bust). Something about this whole senario just intrigues me.

  • Roy Jamison

Packer Bob, in defense of Gabe Wilkins, he was injured either before that game or during and the Genius had to substitute Darius Holland into that spot. The spot that Terrell Davis found time and time and time again. Interestingly enough, Holmgren could have activated a veteran DE for that game but chose not to do that. Maybe it would not have mattered, but Holland was brutal.

  • packer_bob

    Mark,

    Rigid? Old school? Intractable, even?

We can’t be talking about the same the Forest Gregg; I remember him being renowned for his flexibility and out of the box thinking, a truly innovative football mind with a common touch that endeared him to his players and fans alike.

HA! Of course I’m joking. I didn’t follow football back then like I do now but your description rings true. If I am remembering a story from “Mudbaths and Bloodbaths” correctly, he and Ditka despised each other to the point that they eliminated Packer/Bear pre-season games because both squads almost came to blows as the coaches were making it like all out war—in a PRE-SEASON GAME!

Roy, I think you’re right about Wilkens getting hurt in that game although I seem to remember players questioning just how hurt he was as opposed to having hurt pride from getting his ass kicked. I’ve never gone back and watched that game–back then I used to videotape all the Packer games and would often “break down” the tape afterwards, but I think that one got re-recorded over pretty quickly, so I wouldn’t bet much on my remembrances of that game.

I just know I was sick for a week afterward. I haven’t felt that bad about any game since although the wild card game against Frisco the following year and 4th and 26 against the Eagles were close. The years we lost to Atlanta and the Vikings at home in the playoffs I felt like I saw coming. Even losing to the Giants in the title game wasn’t as bad for me simply because we had so much of a better season than anyone could have hoped for.

I remember thinking that Davis could have run for 200 yards in the first half of that Super Bowl if he hadn’t had to leave with the migraines. Brutal, indeed! Our offense kept us in it though, so it was a great Super Bowl with the exception of the outcome of course.

  • packer_bob

    Larry,

Let’s hope and pray you’re right about Harrell. At this point, I’m not even looking for great, I’ll settle for serviceable and any kind of contribution. Not holding my breath though.

Excellent article. There are alot of nuances to this sort of switch that this article points out.

Like I’ve been saying, I like this switch but think it’s unrealistic to think the D will be gangbusters from the start. I hope our host is right about the easy transition but I’m skeptical.

  • Rocky70

IMO, MM is going to have to use the four pre-season games much different this year than in the past. If he attempts again to prevent injuries by not playing the proposed starters, then the D could start slowly. If he goes gangbusters in the pre-season, the D could fall into place sooner rather than later. It’s a chance he’ll have to take. Capers is known for demanding precision through repetition. Hopefully, he’ll want to see the progress before the ‘real’ games start. Capers has much more influence on MM & TT than Sanders could ever dream of. Drafting Raji & Matthews prove this out.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Rocky, I don’t usually agree with you but I think you’re right on all counts. Ditto for putting pressure on a starting O-line in the preseason.

  • packer_bob

I agree that they may as well use the pre-season games to get in all the work they can but 1.) I don’t believe McCarthy will do anything different than he usually does because it doesn’t seem to be in his nature and 2.) Even if he does go “gangbusters” the notion that you get that much out of pre-season is dubious to me, especially after the first half when almost all teams have pulled their starters.

Again, I agree–use the pre-season to get as many reps in with as many starters/potential starters as possible. If it accelerates the learning curve 1% it’s probably worth doing. I just don’t know how much of a meaningful leap forward it will provide once the season starts. I expect alot of growing pains no matter what, especially early to mid-season.

  • Larry

Forget my interest in McAllister; just found out he’s in the Williams’ league facing suspension. I’m really looking forward to QB School and the answer to “Do we have a QB backup?” One article I read pointed out the value of working against the 34 in practice since 5 out of Division games are with 34 teams, interesting. I suppose just getting use to the positioning in the pre-season is worth something more than the usual same-O, same-O. This is going to an exciting year I suspect.

  • matt

I think Chillar will replace Barnett inside, and Bishop will make a strong push for Hawk’s position. Chillar can cover the tight end and he is bigger. Plus, he proved he could rush the passer in St. Louis.
Bishop seems more aggressive against the run and better at shedding blocks. In the 4-3, he couldn’t cover, but he won’t be asked to do that much in the 3-4.

    What are your thoughts?

  • http://Orlando Mark

Seems like there’s no place for Poppinga. Hawk seems perfectly suited to play inside but he wont get a lot of stats. The ILB’s aren’t as valuable as OLB’s, one of the reasons why Maualuga and Laurinaitus went so low. Chillar might split time with Kampman or Matthews. We’re going to carry more LB’s either way but the backups have to be good on special teams.

  • Pack4life

In a 3-4 ILBs have to take on OGs and Cs. I like Barnett but I dont see that happening. Bishop Seems like a Natural there. We will know how effective the 3-4 is game one if we can cover the Bears TE position it will be good year for the Defense

  • Roy Jamison

Packer Bob, I love that word “serviceable” for Harrell. I’ve been a big critic of that pick. I always think I have to include an obligatory comment that I have nothing against Harrell personally, I just wish he was wearing some other color uniform, like purple or Lion powder blue. I have tried holding my breath, but started turning bluish-red and decided to quit.

  • Roy Jamison

Sometimes I get an itch I gotta scratch and this time I am asking for the guys on this blog to help. Ever since I read the book, “When Pride Still Mattered”, I got a deep respect for Jack Vainisi who was the personnel guy at the time for Green Bay. He probably had as much to do with Vince Lombardi coming to Wisconsin as anyone. After reading about him, I get the feeling his ability to judge talent, like Paul Hornung among many many others, was unprecedented for that time. But I am deeply puzzled why the Packers have not done something to recognize his accomplishments? Does anyone know?
There’s another article I’m leaving for those who make not know about this great man.

    Roy, great article.

How can Collins QB the D if he is not here to learn it?

  • Steve Cheez

I dunno. How can Collins QB the D if he is not here to learn it?

  • Roy Jamison

I’d say the best way would be for Collins to get the newest Madden NFL dvd and exercise finger controls. Pretty soon they’re going to get so realistic with those damn games they’ll play a better game than the real guys and no one will know the difference. Except maybe the officiating is better on video.

  • matt

    Fran Tarkenton is my hero!

  • MacCheez

Hear hear. Finally somebody with the balls to say what so many other people are thinking.

  • Reid

How’s everyone feel about ripping Nick Collins now?

  • Pack4life

Any Apologies or Condolences for NICK COLLINS FAMILY? He is tending to his dying father and all the local media take turns kicking him in the shorts. No Wonder Sterling wouldnt talk to these clowns.

  • Pete H

thank you Pack4life………oooops huh. Maybe some of you might give others the benefit of the doubt occaisionally

  • Larry

Whoa, whoa, whoa, guys. Who was kicking him in the shorts? He had a responsibility to be in GB for the OTAs, but Pack staff gave him a pass because they undoubtedly knew (again) something we did not. Good enough for me, tho I wonder why he was selective in that he went on the tailgate tour. Sobeit, all I saw in the media was that they felt, as I did, that he should have been there. Obviously, he had a damned good excuse so its water under the bridge – unless, of course some on this blog want to start name calling again just to stir things up and create grudges.

  • Reid

Larry and Pack4life – you are damn talented, logical, obviously die-hard Packers fans whom I would love to go to a game with and drink a few cold ones with. How’s that for name-calling?

  • Larry

Gotcha! Reid, lets not take ourselves too seriously……………!

  • http://Orlando Mark

Tarkenton is a jerk. In his 3 Super Bowls he was 46 for 89 1 touchdown and 6 ints. for 489 yds. Of course he lost all 3. He played 18 years like #4 and hung on too long, his last year he had 32 ints. If he blames #4 for losing to the Giants, how many games did he win when his team rushed for 28 yds? You can look it up. How does he figure Romo, Garcia, and Brady lost to the Giants with better teams and better playing conditions?

  • Roy Jamison

Fran’s got nothing else to do these days but change his Depends.

  • Mel e Mel

I hate to defend a Minnesota Viking but his Teams were beat before kickoff. Those 70s Viking teams went against the AFC teams of the decade. Steelers, Dolphins and Raiders each team has at least 5 HOFers, especially at the QB position. Its like Judging Elway by what he did in the Super Bowls (prior to TDavis).

  • Rocky70

Regardless of what you may think about ‘Fran the Man’ or how you may attempt to tarnish his SB record, it still does not diminish his comments about BF.

Who cares who the messenger is as long as the message is truth? In this case, Tark is ‘spot on’ with his comments. You Favre apologists immediately attack the messenger & say nothing about the message.

Why? Because the message is accurate & is indefensible by you or anyone else. Simply put, BF has been exposed & most can see it.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Rocky, the point I was trying to make WAS that he was the wrong messenger. Instead of defending the (you can look it up) indefensible Fran how about responding to my(you can look it up) defense of #4. How sorry was Brady to be on a team that went 11-5 without him, and having the best offense in history with him to lose to the lowly Giants. How awful was Romo to lose to the rotten Giants on a field where his team completely outclassed us. The Bucs weren’t as good as us but I bet #4 would have played better in that weather. How about responding to that. I would prefer to drop the whole thing but Tarkington has never said anything good about the Pack and he can go to hell.

  • Rocky70

Any approach you want to create to defend BF can easily be reputed using other numbers to paint a different picture. That’s the unfortunate crutch that Favre apologists have ultimately had to lean on. Their initial arguments from last year have largely been dismissed so they have had to resort to insignicant & meaningless trivial obscure numbers to support their unwavering adoration for BF.

    Case in point:
You talk about Brady, the Giants, Romo & finally the Bucs in explaining your case. If you focused more on the pertinent issues involving the Favre Fiasco you would discover that BF’s transgressions have to do with Favre & the Packers & the PackFans. You have run out of relevant points as all apologists have.

If you would ‘prefer to drop the whole thing’ then why do you even comment on it?? If Tark is irrelevant, then why do you respond to his tirade on BF?? Simple: your ‘fluffy feel-good’ illusions about BF have been shattered. BF has exposed his true nature & it’s quite disturbing. It’s not your fault or mine.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Rocky, I didn’t bring Tarkenton up on this post. How can anyone defend him over #4. How many wins did He have wearing a Packer uniform. The point about comparisons to the other teams the Giants beat in the playoffs is that Tarkenton and the haters blame #4 for our loss but wont blame the losses the other teams suffered on their QB’s.

I’ll put this to you as directly as I can. Do you blame #4 for our loss to the Giants?

  • Larry

I could care less about Tarkington’s comments regarding BF, so what? Say what you will about his records over all, but he drove us nuts. That little SOB ran our DL all over the place until we never had anything left in the 4th. Oh, man, it hurts just to remember him scampering all over behind the line. Regardless of the record he sure made us look foolish at times.

  • Rocky70

    @ Mark

A HOF QB leads the team to a game-winning FG in OT in the NFC Championship. BF was unable to accomplish this as a HOF QB. He threw another in a long line of ill-advised passes in his career that led to a loss & ultimate elimination from SB contention. You need to view the on-field picture of the pass & see what BF saw. You would draw this same conclusion.

GB would have had a better chance at defeating the Giants if AR had been the QB on that day. BF is old & he showed it again on that day. Sorry, but this conclusion is nothing I created. Most who have specificly analyzed that game say exactly the same. It is what it is.

  • packer_bob

I take it by these comments Tarkenton must have took a shot at Favre?

Wow, that tears it! All this time I was waiting for a venerable old totem to enlighten me with “the truth.”

Wait a minute, one did—his name was Paul Hornung, and he said Favre should play as long as he wants. Guess I’ll take his word for it.

  • packer_bob

    Rocky-

Was Favre old the week before against Seattle? Sure it was a bad pass, but his stat line in that game was virtually identical to Mannings. He contributed to the loss with a bad pass at the wrong time but do we lose it that game if we can run the ball AT ALL! Or what if Burress wasn’t catching passes on Al Harris all over the damn field?

Without Favre we probably don’t even get that to that game. You obviously have a chip on your shoulder if you want to pin the whole thing on Favre.
