Early concerns at punter, kicker, and QB

Only a few days into camp two areas of concern have quickly arisen. The two punters the Packers have in camp are a joke, neither is even close to NFL material. Who would have thought it was so hard to find a punter? The situation at backup QB is almost as bad. If Aaron Rodgers gets hurt the Packers can mail in any games he misses because they can’t win with Matt Flynn or Brian Brohm at quarterback. These are two areas that could doom the Packers in 2009.

The Packers can solve the backup QB problem real easily by signing Mike Vick. I mean, how often can you find a player of his caliber willing to sign cheap and be comfortable being a backup? Vick paid his dues and I believe he was taken advantage of by his hoodlum friends. I know he could have dumped them when he hit the big time, but like most of us lowlifes, friends are friends and you do what you can for them. Granted, I doubt I would have financed a dog fighting ring if I was rich, but then again I might do something even worse than that. Who knows? The good thing I guess is I’ll never have to make a decision like that because I will never be rich. The point is, Vick deserves a chance to work and the Packers can use him more than any team in the NFL. I doubt the Packers will do it because of the public outcry, but in this case the fans are hurting the team. Fans should be begging for Vick. You can argue if you want but in the end winning games means a lot more to me than the image the Packer portray. Winning hides everything. Just ask Manny Ramirez

The punting dilemma is a much harder fix. It still blows my mind that we cut Jon Ryan. That is hands down the dumbest move Ted Thompson has ever made. Much like Ron Wolf did when he let Craig Hentrich leave as a free agent, Thompson underestimated the value of a good punter. Throw in the fact that kicker Mason Crosby is missing everything in sight the Packer’ kicking game is in shambles, which means they need to bring a new punter for sure and I think a kicker too to provide some competition for Crosby. The problem is that will take up roster spots in other positions that shouldn’t have to be shorted. What a mess this has become in such a short time. It seemed like Crosby was headed for big things but then he had a average year at best last year when he single-handedly cost the Packers two wins. If there is one area that could cost the Packers big time in 2009 it is the kicking game.

It will be interesting to see how bad it gets at those positions before Thompson makes a move. All I know is I want Vick. The Packers need something to attract some attention to an otherwise boring training camp. Really though, Vick is the answer at backup QB, it would be stupid not to bring him in. I know nothing about the punters available, but an open tryout could probably find a better one than the two the Packers have. Same thing at kicker. No matter what, all three aforementioned areas must improve if the Packers are going to take the next step

Hope this is only posturing, but I just read Crabtree is prepared to sit out the entire season and re-enter the draft next season if he doesn’t get paid at least as much as #7 pick Heyward-Bey.

Obviously I could care less about Crabtree, just worried about how this may impact negotiations with Raji. In the bigger picture, something needs to be done about the way rookies that haven’t even played a down get paid. There has got to be a better way than this BS.

Agreed on the FA punter, Punk. If we could have had him for a year, assuming of course he is an upgrade over what we currently have, we should have snapped him up imo.

Disagree on the gunners and coverage making the punt team–it all works in concert with each other in that blown coverage can negate a good punt and a bad punt can sabotage potentially good coverage.

Look fellas everyone has an opinion and everyone thinks their opinion right.
The funny thing is there are a lot of folks out there that can’t respect someone elses opinion is it differs from their own.
If Vick can play and someone is willing to sign him then have at it.
I have heard people make the argument that Vick is a convicted felon and they make a wholly ridiculous comparison by saying “if he were an acountant, or a electrician, or a plumber etc he would have trouble getting hired.
Thats stupid just plan stupid. You have to put it in the right context which would be if he were one of the “best” “most talented” plumbers, electricians, accountants etc you can bet your ass he wouldnt have any trouble finding work, even if he is a convicted felon.
Jesus people I guess we should just send him away for life because hell according you you dweebs he shouldnt be abe to work!!! Oh i know what you’ll say “he can work, just not in the NFL or playing football because it’s a privledge not a right”.
WRONG!!!!! IT’S A GAME!!!!! And he was good at it. It’s all a bunch of envy, yoou folks can’t stand he makes millions and you don’t.
How many pro players and pro personel are bitching he shouldnt get a chance to play again?
He made a mistake a terrible disgusting one at that but everyone does and guess what it was dogs! People pay to watch HUMANS FIGHT boxing MMA UFC and there have been deaths!! There isn’t much difference. Racing horses are put to death all the time. Give it a break.

Crabtree is ridiculous. Anyone turning down 15 million dollars is several bricks short of a load. Stories are comming out of Texas Tech that he would reject the team meal and have someone go to a restaurant. How sad. Al Davis screwed the draft up by drafted someone who wasnt even 1st team all-ACC @ 7 then to make worst giving a 20 % raise over last years pick at #7. 7 is signed and 12 is signed. Wayne Weaver down in Jacksonville is a known cheapskate and he is at #8. The Packers and David Dunn should just average between7 12 and go with it

    Thomas L. ????

Another copy & paste troll. Go away.

I haven’t really read where anyone here made any of those arguments, Thomas L. Most people seem to think if some team wants him, fine, let him sign if he wants. The debate here is all because of a TT generic response and revolves around whether or not it would be a good move for the Packers. Sounds like this was never a real issue to begin with if you can believe Mark Murphy.

    Mel,

I don’t know whose more to blame, Al Davis’ stupid ass or Crabtree, but the NFL really should put some rules down about this.

The punt is one of those things that gets you wadded up in worthless stats. Whats the difference between a 50 yarder w/ a 20 yd runback or a 35 yarder w/ a 5 yd runback? A punt thru the EZ or a shank out of bounds prevents a Hester TD. Hang time and field pos. are what count obviously, and thats why I’m looking forward to a much better year on the exchange regardless who is punting. We’re probably going to have STs this year with only DBs, LBs, and FBs.

    One day later:

•Crosby made 8 of 9 field goals in the practice. He was wide right from 48. Made one from 53. It might be significant that Durant Brooks held on four of the kicks and looked very adept at it.
