Bittersweet day for true Packers’ fans

When Brett Favre signed his contract today with the Minnesota Vikings he also signed away any chance he ever had of returning to Green Bay as a hero. He is now public enemy number one and if the Packers only win two games this year they better be the Vikings games. I have never hated a former Packer more than I hate Brett Favre. You say hate is a strong word, in this case it is a weak word. Brett Favre is dead to me. I have more respect for Jim McMahan.

Judging by his press conference today it is clear that Favre has no respect for Packers’ fans. To think that a true Packers’ fan would embrace him playing for the Packers’ most hated rival just goes to show how stupid this man is. Brett Favre has no clue what a “true Packers’ fan” is. He should never be allowed back in Green Bay after he retires and certainly never allowed in the Packers’ Hall of Fame. His accomplishments on the field merit induction, but his hatred for the Packers should keep him out of this city forever. I would never welcome him back. All the things he said to disrespect the city, the organization, and the Packers’ fans cannot be brushed under the rug. The guy is the biggest baby I’ve ever seen play in the NFL, except for maybe Ryan Leaf, but it is a close call.

One thing I really liked hearing today was the Packers’ players were pretty much saying they can’t wait to kick his ass, linebacker Nick Barnett made it perfectly clear he was coming after him. The Packers certainly have nothing to fear in Brett Favre, in fact, they have everything to gain. Favre is a shell of his former self so his signing with the Vikings pretty much ends the Vikings’ playoff hopes and pretty much puts the division in the hands of the Packers and Bears. Contrary to popular belief the Vikings are not a quarterback away from winning the Super Bowl. This is a desperation move by Brad Childress to save his job and everybody knows it. The beauty is it cost the Vikings $12 million to boot. This move is just another in a long line of losing moves the Vikings have made over the years that makes them a laughingstock in the NFL. We all remember how they paved the way for the Dallas Cowboys to win three Super Bowls in the 90s.

The Vikings’ coach, and their owner, blatantly lied to their players and fans during the process and one can only wonder how that plays in the locker room. Chilly wasn’t exactly a lovable character to begin with. I guess, at this point, neither is Favre. This is going to be a joy to watch as it is a train wreck in the making. I feel like I’m watching Gomez in the Addams Family.

Finally, when Favre says the Packers’ choose to go in a different direction he is so full of shit it is simply unbelievable to hear him say that. The Packers didn’t cut Brett Favre, Brett Favre retired. What were the Packers to do? Not play a quarterback the next year? And to think that Favre thinks the Packers treated him like shit is just proof of how stupid this guy is. The outpouring of goodwill the Packers’ fans gave to him made him a star. When his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer the Packers and Packers’ fans were instrumental in starting the Deanna Favre’s Hope Foundation and proof of that was a total pink out at a game shortly after her diagnoses. After hurricane Katrina Packers’ fans made huge donations to the relief fund mainly because it hit so close and even destroyed Favre’s family home. To say the Packers and their fans did nothing for Favre is a joke and Favre owes more to us than we do to him.

If the Vikings beat the Packers this year, which I think is very unlikely, head coach Mike McCarthy is 7-1 against the Vikings and his only loss was a missed field goal at the buzzer last year, than so be it. Where the two teams are at the end of the season is all that counts and the Vikings will have a fading 40-year old QB leading them while the Packers will have one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL leading them. You can’t find a valid argument anywhere to say Favre is better than Aaron Rodgers at this point which probably is why the Packers and their fans won’t lose any sleep over Favre joining the Vikings on the field. They may not hate Favre like I do, but they are smart enough to know this is a good move for the rest of the division.

  • Rocky70

The Favre apologists should just concede. …. Your arguments have always been weak, error-prone, emotional tirades that lack any logical level of intelligence. ….. Even now when reality slaps you in the face, you refuse to accept it.

BF has always been about BF………… The NFL, the Packers & the fans have just been props in BF’s own ego-centric stage play.

The apologists will continue to be ballwashers……. But do us all a favor….. Wipe off that BF DNA dribbling down your chins…… It looks disgusting.

  • packer_bob

Does anyone here remember Muhammed Ali retiring and unretiring about 35 times in the last 4 or so years of his career?

When they talk about Ali today, they don’t show highlights of him getting his ass beat by Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick, in fact it’s barely talked about. Ali made his decisions, MJ made his etc., Favre is making his own decisions about his life and I don’t blame him for not worrying what some fans or pundits think.

  • packer_bob

Yeah, MJ wasn’t in it for MJ and Ali wasn’t in it for Ali, they were mostly worried about what crusty old farts had to say.

Guess what, when I work, I’m mostly in it for me. Hilarious to me that you think the Packers and NFL have been used. The Packers got what they wanted out of Favre and NFL execs are probably thrilled to death, so wipe your own chin, it’s drool.

  • Rocky70

Notice how packer_boob is always the first to respond to an ‘apologist’ post.

Ummmm….. now what could that mean ? An admission of guilt ??

PB would give BF a free-pass even if he ran over his poodle a half dozen or so times…………Now that’s a loud LOL. ………… You have been slayed packer_boob but not by me, by BF himself……….. Another LOL.

  • http://Orlando Mark

That’s the point Rocky. #4 didn’t run over anyones poodle. He just wants to play in the best situation he can get. No substance abuse, no losing on purpose or shaving points, no wife beating, no drunk driving homicide. You know, just playing football. He’s our enemy when he’s in the other huddle and when the game’s over he’s not.

  • Rocky70

The ‘great one’ is not even remotely in the same classification as MJ or Ali.

They were/are icons in their sport. …. BF is just 1 of 53 players on an NFL roster. All of BF’s records will be broken soon & his ONE SB victory in 19 seasons will relegate him to a status of just another QB from yesteryear. ……. I’m not making this up……….. It is what it is.

  • packer_bob

I posted something two minutes after yours, dumb ass. How could I miss it?

In your seething hatred for Favre, anyone that doesn’t care to act like he did something to them personally is an “apologist.” Obviously I qualify as an apologist in your book and we’ve gone back on forth on this many times. That’s why I responded.

I don’t know what free pass you’re talking about, I wish this situation weren’t taking place. But I don’t look to highly paid athletes for fidelity and then piss myself when they have other ideas. Maybe you just do that anyway, dunno.

  • Rocky70

    @ Mark

You know you’re right…… BF hasn’t put out any hits on anyone, he hasn’t had an illicit affair behind his wife’s back, he doesn’t use profanity. I bet he even closes the door when he uses the bathroom. ……… You can mention all the things he doesn’t do but you can’t hide from this fact……….

BF has been dishonest & openly deceptive for well over a year now….. What was obvious to most is now obvious to all….. Accept it. …. You know this to be true.

  • packer_bob

Rocky, the point about MJ and Ali was in comparison to their in’s and out’s regarding retirement. We could pull up how many examples from over the years? The point is sometimes players have time tables of their own, it’s their decision.

If you think Favre 20 years from now is going to be just another QB in league history, you really need to have your head examined. Yes, regardless of where he sets the bar it will be eclipsed sometime but Favre will be spoken of as one of the all time greats for a long, long time if not forever.

  • packer_bob

“BF has been dishonest & openly deceptive for well over a year now”–Your interpretation, you don’t know what’s in his heart. Substitute wishy-washy and I’d agree.

  • Rocky70

You have been slayed packer_boob but not by me, by BF himself……

Calm down, PB. ….. Can’t deny that you were still the first to respond as usual.

Someday BF will be forgiven for his bad behavior & so too will the apologists. (maybe) LOL.

  • Rocky70

” All of BF’s records will be broken soon & his ONE SB victory in 19 seasons will relegate him to a status of just another QB from yesteryear. ”

BF will probably be remembered most in 20 years for his dismal exit from a professional sporting career….. How he took a dump on his fanbase……. And how he used deception & lies to feed his own ego.

Why deny the obvious ? ……….. You’re embarrassing yourself again.

  • packer_bob

I don’t know about you Rocky, but I’m not on this blog 24/7. I’m on it now, you’re beating your drum to death as usual, and I have a problem with stupidity going unchallenged, so I’m going to respond.

What is this “you have been slayed” shit btw, you’ve been saying that alot lately. Is that the catch-phrase of one of your heroes or something, like “It’s clobberin’ time” by the Thing from Fantastic Four? It’s stupid as hell, fyi. Try “Up, up and away” next time. That wouldn’t make any sense but would fit well with the usual gibbering you do.

Just a little reality check for ya—you haven’t won anything by announcing it is so. And neither myself or BF is in need of any forgiveness, least of all from the likes of you.

  • Rocky70

Gotta go. Can’t waste anymore time dealing with the ‘apologists’. I’m too hyped about season 2009.

Try this article for a look at 2009 & beyond at AR. …. You know, the present & future at QB for the Pack.

” Rodgers Making Fast Progression to Elite QB ”

  • packer_bob

“BF will probably be remembered most in 20 years for his dismal exit from a professional sporting career….. “—Like Ali? Or wait a minute, does Ali’s greatness grant him a pass you won’t give Favre cuz he ONLY won one SB.

Don’t like the Ali analogy? Ummmm, Willie Mays, Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, OJ Simpson, Franco Harris, Sugar Ray Leonard, Emmitt Smith, all guys that finished on other teams and over stayed there welcome. Dismal exits, I say, and the last thing that comes up when talking about these guys now.

One last thing—–It’s coming——–”You have been slayed!”

    See how stupid that sounds?

  • Rocky70

Gotta go for the last time.

——–”You have been slayed!” ….. I like it. It’s short, simple & to the point.
“It is what it is.” ….. Again, direct & to the point.
” What’s obvious to most is now obvious to all “. … Another direct hit.

packer_boob …. feel free to use any of these if you so desire. …. They would certainly spruce up your mundane posts. ………

  • packer_bob

Didn’t respond to the points, as usual.

I don’t know about the “slayed” BS, but the other two are already in the Hall of Fame for Over Used Expressions, so I’ll decline, ty so very much for your kind offer!

  • http://Orlando Mark

P-b, I think we have to agree to disagree with Rocky. These arguments are getting a little circular. Reality is the Bills Saturday night. It’d be nice to look forward to an even more exciting season where the deception is clever ball handling and fake reads.

  • Rocky70

A little lockerroom issue with the Vikes ??

” That reality gives the situation in Minnesota a familiar feel. There is already an undercurrent that some veterans aren’t happy the way Favre’s courtship played out. ”

    Or this:

” But that’s the rub. Favre’s high-maintenance offseason antics one year ago came with that same price tag. If the Jets made significant strides, it would have all been worth it. If they rode Favre to the Super Bowl, it was a fantastic gamble. But one year later, it looks like a complete failure. The team missed the playoffs. The coach was fired. And the player who was supposed to have brought it all together isn’t on the roster anymore. ”

The Vikings……… Another flame-out mastered by BF ?? … Sounds plausible.

  • Matt Hayton

Why in the hell are you all not grinding your axe into Pedro Martinez or John Smoltz. Same deal as Favre. Retired, changed their mind. Came back after the season started? Did you beat the shit out of Randall Cunningham or Vinny Testeverde or Warren Moon? Or how about Michael Strahan or Reggie? Who, by the way, called up Wolf and Harlan in the middle of training camp only to be rebuffed and cut, which was much different than how current management handled Favre.

You all are so passionate about this because your hero did the unthinkable, he played for whoever would take after the Packers didn’t want him anymore.

If this isn’t the case, someone tell me why you care so much to waste time on this blog bitching about it so much?

  • Mel e Mel

Brett has already started losing, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of MN has said he wishes the Vikings well but this does not affect the new stadium. Brett will eventually have this team in the NFC West. City of industry California is building a new stadium. When Favre mania crashes and burns California here we come will be the new Vikings theme song.

  • Rocky70

    @ MH

” If this isn’t the case, someone tell me why you care so much to waste time on this blog bitching about it so much? ”

It’s not what BF did, it’s how he did it. ….. Most people have issues with dishonesty & deception….. Maybe you don’t……

MH – the shit that is sitting on top of your head came from BF……. You & people like you have been duped….. Admitting to this is the 1st step in recovery. …. Good luck.

  • packer_bob

MH, the people who have a problem with Favre will always have a problem with Favre. I think most of them had a problem with him for years and are just getting out their emotional issues now. There’s no sense in bringing up rational, reasonable points.

Can’t talk sense to a turnip.

Rocky, is that quote from the same source that thought McNabb wasn’t happy about the Eagles signing Vick? Funny thing that, I heard right from McNabb’s mouth that he suggested it shortly after reading that litte bit of gossip.

If you want to be taken seriously, perhaps you should research your quotes better instead of buying into everything you read on the internet. There’s quite a bit of information available, problem is not all of it’s true.

And there’s no Easter Bunny, either.

  • Punk

As I understand it StarCap is a masking agent for the real ‘roid stuff. From what I have been led to believe thats why its banned. Why then, would the Williams boys be taking the SC? Was it to cover-up the ‘roids? If it was, and SC can be detected so they can’t use that anymore, then it follows that they can’t get by with using the ‘roids either. Does it also logically follow that their performance will slip w/o the performance enhancing ‘roids? The match ups really have changed with our beefing up the middle of our OL and the MIN DTs no bigger than our guys, and now without their little goodies. Then we get to the Cutler/Favre comparisons which extend to personality, tendencies, and mind-set as well as arm strength, smarts, and discipline; so since they’re both on new teams why should we be more concerned about either than any other QB we face this year? I’m still stoked!

  • packer_bob

“P-b, I think we have to agree to disagree with Rocky. These arguments are getting a little circular. ”

The arguments have been circular for over a year now, but I have a problem with “agreeing to disagree” with someone that tells me 2+2=17.5. I’m just hard headed that way, I guess.

  • packer_bob

    Punk,

My understanding is that the Williams boys were using Star-Caps to try to shed weight. I guess we’ll never know if they were using it for other purposes, I believe it can also be a masking agent, but I’ve never heard anyone make a case that they were hiding steroid use.

Still, if it’s a banned substance so be it, like when Jim Miller was suspended when he was with the Bears. No one thought he actually took steroids either.

Guess that’s what lawyers are for.

  • CheesyD

If Favre came back for the 17th time (lost count) just because “he wants to play football”, then why didn’t he stay with the Jets? He was still under contract until he “retired” again.

His decision had nothing to do with “playing football”. He wants to get back at the Packer organization and he’s more than happy to walk all over the Green Bay faithful who stood behind him for 16+ seasons to do it. That’s how little Favre thinks of all of us.

I wish I could attend the Packer-Viking game at Lambeau just so I could boo his ass. I’ll have to settle for farting in his general direction and laughing at the Vikings as their season crumbles around them when The EGO destroys their hopes with interception after interception.

  • Richard Krause

I think the Packer fans hold the out-come of the Nov. MN game in their hands.

When Holmgren left for Seattle he came back for an in-season game in GB. We just had to beat him but the Packer fans were too polite to harass the Seattle Offense and GB lost that game.

We’ll see how much the fans scream and disrupt BF and the Queens Offense.

    Deek

  • packer_bob

Favre has retired and come back twice. Twice. If you can’t count to two without losing count, you have my condolences.

As far as the Jets, he did retire with a shot arm. Perhaps at that point he really thought that may be it. Also, it was pretty clear the Jets and Favre were a shotgun marriage forced by TT, at least from Favre’s end. It was his best available option. After the way last season ended, they probably both wanted out.

The revenge angle is speculation. People can talk about it all they want, but I take Favre at his word. It’s a long season to come back for two revenge games. If you look at all the other positives from Favre’s perspective (personnel, coaches he’s familiar with, offense he’s familiar with, domed stadium, the fact that the Vikings would pay him that kind of money) they add up to alot as compared to the revenge factor.

  • roy jamison

So I guess this means that number 4 won’t be retired this year?

  • CheesyD

Number 4 will be retired, and then unretired, and then retired, and then unretired, and then retired, and then given a reality show on the CW.

  • TRIP

I’ve come to the place where I don’t blame Ted for moving on. And I don’t criminalize Brett for wanted to play. He is right about it being his own legacy, for him to choose. And I respect that, but seeing him in purple hurts. I don’t hate him like Al, the unruly child, but I wish he could have stayed in the AFC. Unless he becomes the first QB to win it all with 2 teams, there are no winners. Just a bitter (no sweet) day for TRUE packer fans.

  • Matt Hayton

    Trip -

This is absolutely the best comment on here. I agree with you completely.

  • PackerBacker65

I also agree with Trip. I think alot of people forget that this is entertainment. It is not life or death. It would be different if the Packers were left without a good QB but Rodgers will make the ProBowl this year and many years to come. Favre has the right, as any american, to work. If he can find someone to pay him $12 million dollars to do a job I can’t fault him for that. Im sorry it turned out to be the Vikings but to look on the bright side, the Packer/Viking monday night game will be the regular season game of the year and its nice for the Packers to get that attention. He helped give me some great years of entertainment and I will not wipe all that out. I wish him well except when he plays the Pack.
