Another dominating performance

This is getting scary. The Green Bay Packers’ first-string offense looks unstoppable, and the new 34 defense is coming up huge in two preseason games. We all know we have to look at these games with knowing the outcome of the game means nothing, the main focus is to evaluate players. The Packers’ first string offense doesn’t need much evaluating, they are in mid-season form, in fact, they are on fire. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is looking better and better and now he might have another huge weapon in tight end Jermichael Finley, who along with Greg Jennings and Donald Driver make this passing game almost unstoppable.

When Finley made that first catch for a first down he used the classic Keith Jackson first-down motion that brought back great memories. The Packers’ offense is on their way to something special I think. Like the past 18 years in Green Bay if the quarterback doesn’t get hurt the Packers are going to be in the hunt.  The Packers have so many weapons on offense it is ridiculous. There isn’t a receiver on any other NFC North team that would be a starter on the Packers. Greg Jennings, Donald Driver, James Jones, Jordy Nelson and Ruvell Martin have to be one of the best receiving crews in the NFL, if not the best.

I know, I know, it is only preseason, and like head coach Mike McCarthy said, “don’t strike up the band”, but how can we not be excited about what we see? Maybe because the Lions went 4-0 last preseason on their way to 0-16? We all know how the preseason works, but the Packers’ ones against the opponents’ ones have been a mismatch. The next two preseason games are on the road so it will be interesting to see how those games play out, but the foundation has been laid.

Certainly confidence is high, Rodgers is looking great and with the weapons he has around him the Packers are only a defense away from greatness. I’m not a patient fan, and when former defensive coordinator Bob Sanders was fired and Dom Capers was hired to bring in the 34 defense, immediate improvement was expected. The Packers’ defense in two games has been great, however, they have faced to horrible offenses, so write home to Momma just yet.

My concerns about the offensive line are still valid. I am not sold on the right side of this unit. Rodgers has praised his line and I love that, but the only weakness of the offense is still the o-line. I guess if that is all I have to worry about on offense I shouldn’t lose a lot of sleep. Rodgers is capable of breaking every passing record in team history, expect one or two of them to fall this year.

You always fall back on W-L records. (you know 6-10, 6-10 etc.)
You must have something to say about these facts.
    _____
    Ron Wolf’s 1st 4 years as GM in Green Bay —– 31 – 33.
    Ted Thompson’s 1st 4 yrs. as GM in GB ——– 31 – 33.
    _____
Your problem is simple. ……. You don’t know the facts.
I’m sure Al will allow this link. ….. PFR is great when one wants to state his argument based on factual information……….. It’s a great site if you like numbers & history.

here’s another one for you if wanna go there: Wolf had ZERO and I repeat ZERO losing seasons as the GM in 9 seasons. TT already has 2 in 4 years. Wolf had 6 playoff apperances, TT has 1, thanks to Favre & his 4 comeback wins in ’07.

Here is what I have against TT: No Adrian Peterson or Randy Moss on our roster today. He had chances to get both in ’07, which would have given us a much better shot to win a SB that year and in the future, but he didn’t have the balls to make either move.

And don’t give me that hindsight is 20/20 BS. Draft day ’07 I and others were clamoring for either one of these moves to be made.

AP would have cost us: Justin Harrell (’07 #1), Aaron Rouse (’07 #3), Jordy Nelson (’08 #1) and maybe Brandon Jackson (’07 #2). I’d take AP for this group, anyday, and so would the rest of you. Especially since Aaron Rouse, Harrell and Jackson are not locks to even make our opening day roster this year.

It would have been a risk to trade up for AP, but so was standing still. By the way, this was very doable on draft day ’07 it was widely known that Arizone at #5 was looking to trade down into the teens… Could you imagine an offense of AR, Jennings and AP for the next decade? But no instead, we’ve got to face him twice a year with old what’s his name handing the ball off to him.

Moss would have cost us Barbre (’07 #4)…Again I take Moss over Barbre hands down!

The guy cost us our best opportunity to win a SB in a decade and moving forward by not having any guts to take a risk and get a difference maker. And how the rest of you aside from PB can just ignore this fact and make excuses for the guy, frankly, causes me to question your fanhood.

They need to go 9-7 and make the playoffs or I think they both need to be fired on the spot. If that doesn’t happen, can someone please explain why we’d give MMTT another year. They’ve had 4 and 5 years respectively to get the job done…

To me, this is a now or never year for them. And hey if we start winning and going back to the playoffs, I’ll shut up, say I was wrong and be happy as a clam watching playoff games and hopefully a SB or 2!

Rocky, I don’t know where you get 31-33. 9-7, 9-7, 11-5, 13-3= 42-22. If you count that he was hired in the middle of the season where he had no input you’re not kidding anyone here.

  • Rocky70

    MH

Your post is pure borderline ridiculous…. No, it’s absolutely ridiculous.

You are viewing everything in hindsight…….. You’re taking the easy way out……. Anyone can view the world after the fact & claim intelligence……. I knew all about MicroSoft in 1988 …. therefore I should be a multi-millonaire at this point…. not hardly.

Please don’t insult anyone’s intelligence with your revisionist history lessons.

  • Rocky70

    Mark

You’re correct. Ron Wolf was hired in the middle of season 1991. ….. He was GM & the Packers finished the season 4-12…… You can attribute the season to whoever you wish……….. Not much different than TT taking over for the Pack just prior to 2005 where the Pack finished again 4-12…… You’re dealing with pure technicalities based on whatever biases you may have….. A GM with ‘no input’. I’d like to see that.

  • Reid

    Punk,

Let me clarify by saying that I think TT is doing a pretty good job. If I had to choose a side, which I don’t, I would be on his side. That said, I think the Favre situation could have been handled better by TT from the beginning. His communication skills either are lacking or he intentionally doesn’t communicate anything. I felt this was a case where he should have opened up a bit. He allowed too much speculation and too much negative propoganda to take the place of open and honest communication.

This issue divided Packer Nation and, based on this blog, may never die. I was just wondering what the effect would have been if they both got canned. No one would have a side to choose that would matter for squat because neither one would be a Packer any more. It would have been one hell of a statement.

  • JeffN

Hayton, the only thing is if we would have traded up and drafted AP then Favre might have stuck around and we would have lost Rodgers to free agency. That would not have been worth it. I’ll take Rodgers over AP anyday. QB is more important and RBs only have like a 6 year life span. I expect Rodgers to be in the Green and Gold for at least 10 years minimum, it could be longer.

Legat, I don’t see all kinds of question marks around you or 98% of the other postors here. Also you don’t make the kind of waves talking up a storm like PB so I can cut you some slack. I’m just all about calling people out when they get out of line and you’re not one of them.

And I apologize if I offended anyone who lives out of state for missing preseason games. Still tho I would encourage you guys to step it up a bit, look for ways to watch the games online, at a sports bar, or offer to bring a case of beer to anyone you know who might have NFL network/Sunday ticket.

  • http://Orlando Mark

TT got rid of our starting gaurds and put in people that couldn’t play. Wolf had to ride out the last two months of a season that was blown. You know it and so does everyone else. Of course it’s like all your arguments. How do you then explain years 5 through 10. No losing seasons once he took over period. I know it is stupid to argue with you but your twisting history to prove facts not in evidence should at least be pointed out. You want to believe Wolf and TT are the same for whatever reason, have at it. Just don’t expect anyone else to go along with it.

  • Rocky70

    @ Mark

I rely on facts & stats. ……….. Although I have opinions……. I only post when I know I can support them with the real facts…………. You should try it sometime.

TT is not done in GB…. He is still the GM now & will be for many years….. Only a clown would try & compare a GM after nine years & another entering his fifth season….. 2005 was a lost season because the team was in shambles due to salary cap hell & little talent on the roster due to Sherman’s ineptness as a GM…… It has taken until now to clean up the mess……

Do some research…… You’ll be able to post more intelligently in the future.

  • Michael Legat

    Hayton,

If Thompson was the GM of your fantasy football team and didn’t take Moss or Petersen, then you’d have a right to be upset. Seeing as how we are better than fine at offensive skill positions and have been for the past three seasons, I think your complaint is laughable.

Best chance at a Super Bowl? I just have this gut feeling that AP will be out of the league in two years with injuries. And Newsflash: Moss was on the team with the best single season record in the 1990s and an undefeated team two years ago. And how many rings is he sporting? We got as close to winning a Super Bowl with Moss as without. Get over it, dude.

  • http://Orlando Mark

This is really simple Rocky. With your stats and facts do you belive from all your research that TT is just as good a GM as Wolf?

  • Michael Legat

Also, how exactly did the league’s best cornerback get to Green Bay?

    That’s right.

Do you people realize just how boring the non-stop bash the G.M. argument is? It’s a new season, for crying out loud.

    LET IT GO, PEOPLE!

  • Rocky70

    @ Mark
Now we get to the meat of the whole conversation.

“This is really simple Rocky. With your stats and facts do you believe from all your research that TT is just as good a GM as Wolf?”

I’m saying it’s too early to draw any solid conclusions…… It’s like belittling your 5 yr. old child because he hasn’t lived up to your ten-year old child……

Why are you idiots still harping on Thompson? Running out of topics I guess. You always have to go back to Favre and Thompson. If I were a shrink I would be targeting you guys big time. You all need major help.

  • Rocky70

    Al,

You have to write another blog to redirect our attention.
We became bored with the RT story so just naturally went on to bigger & better.

As far as needing help, you should re-read some of your blogs. …. Maybe all of us should schedule an appointment….. Calling us ‘idiots’ certainly won’t increase your hits, IMO. ……. You ban people for less…… Can we ban you?…. LOL.

Reid, before I jump to the next thread I have to clear something up. Reading your 8:27 makes me wonder if I totally misread your 3:51 and if so I owe you an apology. I do take offense at the language and characterizations in many of these posts. The use of terms like hate, man-love, kissass, got me in a bad mood and my damned water supply here has been shut off for two days. What you explained in your 8:27 makes sense to me because “wondering if” is totally different than “should have”. We all have our favorites in Packer Nation. Mine are Lombardi as coach, although Holmgren might have been better in today’s environment, and Wolf as GM. But the jury is still out on MM and TT, and while I’m willing to give them the benefit of doubt, I’m sure not ready to give them the exalted status of the aforementioned. I’m convinced this is a good to excellent team and ’07 and ’08 no longer interest me as the game now is only ’09. Thats not to say I don’t think we don’t need a backup QB better than Brohm, or a better RT, or a quality backup for Clifton, or even a better DE/NT than Harrell. I’m just very patient and am willing to let these guys play themselves off the roster. I tend to think we spend entirely too much time trying to play “gotcha” than discussing the merits of this team as it is constructed now. Who we didn’t get 1-2-3-4 or 5 years ago means didly squat, its who we’re going to battle with now that counts. Thanks for letting me vent. I’m moving on to the next thread.

  • Matt Hayton

You all harp on me for talking about the past but yet not one of answered my question about the future. What if we miss the playoffs again? Do they deserve to keep their jobs? Please defend them, I’d love to hear how you cna support your management that has gone 4-12, 8-8, 13-3, 6-10 and hypothetically 8-8 or worse in 2009.

If they win, I am fine with them, but they need to get it done this year. Isn’t this smething we all agree on? Or are you chumps ok with losing every year…I’ll still be a fan like I was during the 70s adn 80s but geesh, out with old in with the new if you can’t get it done after 5 years…That is an eternity in today’s NFL.

  • packer_bob

I’m still harping on Thompson because he can’t handle his liquor! You can read English , can’t you!

But seriously, when a TT team wins a SB (yeah, I know Rocky, ONLY ONE, one more than we’ve ever won since the Lombardi era) then you can start making comparisons with Ron Woolf. In the meantime, he’s just another guy to me.

MH, well said and DOBA, as usual. Mark, ditto.
