Packernet on Twitter

I’m going to try and send some tweets from Lambeau tonight. You can follow me at packernetblog. Not good at texting, so don’t get your hopes up.

Go Pack!

  • dd

this is going to be a good game GO PACK!

  • dd

    why mason why

  • packer_bob

Disappointed in the missed field goal, but at this point, I’m still thinking they can run but they can’t hide. And Cutler’s throwing 3 picks tonight.

We’re a Rodgers overthrow and a missed FG from being up 10-0. It’ll come.

  • zach

    no sweat al.

  • dd

At 1st I didnt think mason was going to make it but he proved me wrong

  • dd

    this is not looking good

  • zach

    relax dd

  • http://Orlando Mark

I guess Barbre isn’t serviceable. I hope he doesn’t get #12 injured. Great defense!!!!

  • dd

its time to get barbre out the game

  • zach

    yeah time to start sweating….

  • packer_bob

Nothing like live play to bring you back to reality. We got 3 Cutler picks in the first half and we’re still struggling? Sick, but I’m still confidnent.

  • zach

    hope you’re right pb

  • dd

what is going on with rodgers he is way off tonight I HOPE he can get it together to win this game

  • dd

wow 4 picks look like jay was about to start crying

  • http://Orlando Mark

Great game and the defense didn’t sag at the end like last year.

  • iccyfan

    Sweeeeeeeet!

We had a couple weak officiating calls in that fourth quarter (phantom holding call on Sitton to negate Rodgers’ scramble for First Down, phantom illegal contact on Harris for Bears First Down) but than didn’t phase the fellas and we drove when we needed it! I loved what ARodg had to say after the game (humble almost apologetic) and hope this late game-winner silences a few of the critics! Nice win…

As for the Bears, Cutler evidently thinks he never makes a mistake and it’s always on the receiver. Here’s hoping he can’t “eat” his feelings and points some fingers thru the media…

  • CheesyD

Barbe is going to get Rodgers killed…

    Great game by the defense.

Nice pass by Rodgers for the winning score.

Any win over the Be*rs is a good win.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net Larry

Didn’t get home until end of 3rd qtr, but it looked like I lost alot of cred tonight. I expected more than 10zip at the half. One thing for certain – this year the D is going to win us some games. What I did see was some lousy officiating. In toto ARs #s don’t look so bad, but I guess he had a bad 1st half?????

  • Matt Hayton

Okay, major props to one AR! That pass to Jennings was clutch, loved seeing that from #12. 1-0 in close games this year, love that! I’ll gladly be the doubter proved wrong! Huge win tonight.

Loser here is now chasing the wildcard only…IMHO, have fun bears.

Concerns…OL and Running game are piss-poor. Barbre is gonna get AR killed! Hopefully, MMTT still have Tausch’s # on speed dial…if there is good value in round #1 in the 2010 draft, LT/RT will be an easy selection…very concerning that we now don’t have book-end tackles…

Still think TT was stupid for cutting Smith, fortunately Rouse was serviceable, although way out of position 2 or 3x, but it didn’t kill us.

Love that D. It’s fun to watch those guys play!!!

Stoked about the season…see a fast start in our future, which we need in order to make the playoffs due to the brutal second half schedule!

  • Matt Hayton

Iccy, totally agree on Rodgers demeanor…love both Rodgers and Jennings after the game. Feels good watching the game with your kids and having them look up to those 2 men. Class acts, win, lose or draw- love that!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net Larry

After looking at the stats I feel a lot better. Obvioulsy a very tough game. 17/28 isn’t shabby considering Barbre’s first half. The D sure did their job – 55 for Forte w/ about a 2.2 average, and under a hundred for Hester. Crosby makes a 52 and misses a 49, so-so I guess. Rather than give the D credit for the ints, it was all the inexperience of the receivers….we still ain’t got no respect!

  • http://Orlando Mark

Larry, respect isn’t as important as a W. This was a big game.
We did better against the run than I expected and took the Bears out of their usual game.
Every other team is going to see RT is a problem and the only way to help Barbre is to develop a real run threat to slow down the rush. The FB’s did a good job but I’d like to give Johnson a try, I think he can be a force.
The kicking game should be given some credit as well.

  • Mel e Mel

I never thought I would live to see the Pack outplay the Bears Special teams. If we are even on D and Win ST there is no way they can win.

  • Mel e Mel

Lovie Smith maybe a bit smarter than McCarthy. Fortunately Dom Capers is Smarter than both of them.

  • Michael Legat

    Few thoughts:

If Lovie Smith is smarter than McCarthy, then he sure didn’t show it tonight. The two challenge flags he threw were the most laughably desperate, timeout-burning mistakes I’ve seen a head coach make. From a personnel and scheme adjustment standpoint, he still may have outcoached Mac tonight, but from a clock and game management standpoint, he was too clever by half.

As a whole, the running game could have been better, but the effort by Mr. Grant was very encouraging to me. I saw flashes of 2007 Ryan, and I have a feeling he has some monster games coming.

I will leave it to the coaching staff to determine over the next two days if the Chicago pass rush was THAT GOOD or our protection was THAT BAD. I suspect that this will be the best front seven defense we’ll see this year outside of Minny and Pittsburgh, maybe Baltimore, so things should look better, but will simply better be good enough, I wonder, to take us where we want to go? This has the makings of a pretty fantastic squad, so if new roster acquisitions are needed, let’s get it done.

  • AATP

There was much I liked and much I didn’t like about this game, but I always expect the unexpected when we play the Bears so to come away with a win is a plus. The Bears could be down and out but always bring an amazing game to Lambeau. With that in mind we may have seen the best D in the NFL last night. I Minny is fine and Pitt is fine but the Bears, when healthy, are probably the most physical of the three – my opinion. I also believe A-Rod was a little rattled last night, call it first game jitters, over amped or whatever, but there were some points left on the field last night. I think he’ll get a little more comfortable as the season progresses and those missed opportunities become scoring opportunities. I just see a lot of good things. I think if Barbre can’t pull it together they will have to start running pass plays away from him or stacking that side with help – something, anything is better then what we saw last night. I guess we’ll see. I’m keeping my optimism that this team is better then what we saw last night.

  • Richard Krause dic

I watched the game in Chicago, when Charles Martin body slammed Jim Mcmahon. He didn’t get away with that hit but Urlacker REALLY hit A-Rod after that incomplete pass and was never called for it. I hope somebody took care of Urlacker for us.

How in the world can an officiating crew come into your house and make them type of moronic calls or non calls? Maybe because we’re owned by the public. Do you think Jerry Jones would stand to have Romo take a hit like A-Rod took and not at least make mention of to the Commish?

    Deek

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net Larry

North Central D, and we’re the best of 3. Held Forte to 55 after 64 and 73 last year; we can hold AP in week 4.

Nice job Slocum, your Daddy taught you well (ahem, A&M).

Deja vu, Starr to Dowler – 3rd and 1 = 50 yd TD, ghost of Lombardi overhead.

I’m feeling so much better, but wouldn’t surprise me if Taush came back when healthy.

  • cdk4205

unlike last year when the horrible officiating calls happened, the Pack still was able to get points or at least hold the opponent to a field goal. Looks like we will have to get used to not having the officials to help the qb from getting hit this year (the urlacher shot on ar early – he put his head down and drilled him in the ribs) and the two guys who hit him on the slide. McNabb went out with a marginal late hit as well (all three would have drawn flags if BF had been getting hig). Collinsworth didn’t seem to understand that if it was ruled a slide it should have been a 15 yard penalty – if it wasn’t, the ball gets marked where his was drilled not where he started the slide. refs were at least consistent on one thing.

  • packer_bob

OK, after the whirlwind roller coaster ride of last night, I’m going to try to settle down and objectively assess what I saw.

First off, if there can be such a thing as a must win game in your first game, last night was it. If we had lost that game, at home, with all the advantages we had on the Bears, I would have seriously freaked. (Plus lost alot of money.) So we held serve, so to speak, and got the W we desperately needed.

Second, our defense showed that the ball hawking in preseason is not a mirage, it’s for real. I said before the game Cutler would throw 3 picks, and he did in the FIRST HALF. So mega-props to the D, and didn’t they look so damn different from last year!

But if we can’t do a better job than that of protecting Rodgers, we have got some serious problems. I don’t think Ogunleye is even that good, and he manhanled Barbre so bad, if it had been a boxing match it would have been stopped early. Rodgers overthrew a big one, underthrew another TD, took a bad safety and in general did not look like he did in pre, but I’m Ok with that. With that kind of pressure anybody’s going to get a little rattled and he hit the big one that mattered when it was needed, so props to him and I agree totally that he and Jennings are great football players and fine human beings. We have many years of watching them grow together ahead of us and are blessed to have them.

But we won the turnover battle last night 4-0 and still barely eked out a victory at home. Maybe my expectations were too high, and I realize it’s the first game and that you NEVER know what you’re going to get when it’s Bears/Packers, but we have some things that need to get fixed. Thankful for the victory, but I was sweating bullets the entire second half and had that sinking feeling in my gut. Glad we pulled it out, but to me it was relief rather than joy that I was experiencing.

  • Michael Legat

    Richard,

Looks like Karma took care of Urlacher for us.

  • roadking

what is concerning is that cutler threw 4 picks and we had to win in the last minute
    we should have stomped them

  • Pack4life

The Green Bay Packers Special teams are special. The athletes now matchup with anyones group, they are aggressive and hard nosed finally some positives on that side of the ball.
Dom Capers is the coach we have waited for since the departure of Fritz Shurmur, possibly even better.
Brady Poppinga has to go in a game like that every other member of the front seven had highlights under the lights. He continues to look lost and its time to get Thomspon or Matthews going.
Raji,Jenkins,Pickett,Jolly that combo will be down right frightening, Bring on the Williams Roid Wall!
Al you were right about Babre he is a joke has to go, I never thought I would be asking for the services of Tony Moll but he never was destroyed like that. Babre got to a point where he didnt compete. DLineman beat OlLineman is a fact of life but it at least has to be a fight that was a massacre. John Runyan and a whole group of Journeyman Olineman are available. Cincy likes to bring pressure so TT do the right thing and get an NFL RT.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net Larry

I really have to laugh at the reviews today in that its all CHI. Tiny references to the Pack, its all how the Bearse gave it away and why they lost. How the WRs didn’t run routes, the TEs weren’t in the game until too late, the bone-head direct snap in punt formation, highest int total in a game – ever – for Cutler, and how he needs more work with his WRs.

After disecting the shortages on O they then jump to how great the D was, but they just couldn’t contain Jennings when they had to, they had to play 3 qtrs w/o Urlacker, the corners just didn’t get the safety support behind them, and lastly, how tough the rest of the year will be w/o their team leader.

Thats what I meant by “no respect”. MIN “proved” they were the team to beat in Div, but nobody talked about how they were behind CLE 13-10 at the half. Dilfer even went on a rant about how Orton, last year, was such a good game manager compared to Cutler. Oh, well, back under the radar and maybe thats not all that bad.

  • roy jamison

Al, as much as I hate to say it, you were right and I was wrong. Altho, with some protection, maybe those two long incomplete passes wind up as tds. But I give credit to the Bears defense. They played tough all game even with the losses of two linebackers. They Pack defense gets the credit for this win. They did enuf to send Cutler to a shrink. We can only hope the O-line improves. As mentioned by many, the obvious mismatch of Barbre can’t go on. And credit Grant too with good key runs. With Urlacher out for the year, the Bears are not going to be quite the same.

  • packer_bob

“Al, as much as I hate to say it, you were right and I was wrong. Altho, with some protection, maybe those two long incomplete passes wind up as tds.”

I concur, Al had it called right and I blew it. Exhibited a little too much irrational exhuberance. Was counting on plays like those incompletions you referred to get put together and they just didn’t, if they had it might have a been a totally different story.

Larry, did you watch that Minnesota game? Cleveland had some serious mometum going at home, ahead at the half, and the Vikings came out and cut their hearts right out in the 2nd half. I think we can beat the Vikings, but I wouldn’t be so dismissive of what they did on the road yesterday.

  • Reid

Yes, some mistakes: Barbre beaten all night, Woodson got toasted twice, Nelson, Driver, Wynn, etc dropped passes, Rodgers not getting rid of ball for safety. BUT, this team already looks a heck of a lot better than last year. The defense change is like from night to day. Instead of dreading the defense coming on the field, I was actually looking forward to seeing them on the field. At times, it looked like we had 13 or 14 defenders out there.

Looked like things we could fix as the season progresses and I’m looking forward to next week.

Oh, Bigby is hurt again, a shock. Some guys just can’t stay healthy.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net Larry

p_b, did not see CLE-MIN, but MIN did what I predicted they would do against us; dink, dunk, and AP. I already admitted that Crow doesn’t taste very good, but we learned we can survive mistakes this year. Bigby loss hurts, as does sub-par play of Barbre, but AR didn’t get careless, Bush made a hell of a play at the GL as did Swain. Geez, we even survived lousy calls by the zebras. I have to be more concerned about the penalties than anything, but we should have Raji from now on, and Mathews lived up to his billing.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Garcia to the Eagles. Just reinforces what I’ve said before. The Eagles want to win this year and we don’t. We could have had a great backup just as easily as the Eagles. But TT doesn’t want to spend the money this year because, like the rest of us, he doesn’t think we have a chance to go to the SB like the Eagles do. Kind of like baseball at the trade deadline. Where the teams fighting for the playoffs give prospects to the teams that are out of it, for expensive players, to make a run.

  • packer_bob

I agree, Mark, we should have gotten Garcia. Not sure why Garcia seems to get treated like chopped liver, he’s had success as a starter wherever he goes and surely would suffice as a quality back up.

After some of the shots AR took last night, I am worried now more than ever about the possibility of AR missing some time.

  • Michael Legat

Yup, you’re both right. I’m already moving on to basketball preseason. It’s all over, folks. Pack up the tents.

  • http://Orlando Mark

MichaelL, I expect an exciting season of highs and lows. Possibly a division title. But the SB, no way. If you were the GM how much chance would you give us to get there?

  • brutus

” But TT doesn’t want to spend the money this year because, like the rest of us, he doesn’t think we have a chance to go to the SB like the Eagles do. ”

This has got to be the dummest statement written in 2009. Could anyone post anything dummer ?

  • Reid

    brutus – well said.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Brutus, Reid and Michael, just answer the question. If you were the GM what do you think the odds are that we’re going to the SB? Or, how else do you explain the Eagles getting Garcia instead of us. We have a greater need for a backup QB than they do.

  • brutus

At this time of the year there are 32 teams that ALL have a chance to go to the Superbowl.

If a GM doesn’t believe this then he shouldn’t be a GM.

The last I looked the Packers had 3 QBs. Why would they need a 4th?

  • Reid

Saying that not going after Jeff Freaking Garcia means our GM doesn’t want to win is idiotic. How many SB’s has Jeff Freaking Garcia won? If Tom Brady was on the market and we didn’t go after him, then maybe. Not Jeff Garcia.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Brutus, we have backups that no one would pickup on waivers. Reid, Garcia was the best available QB. It’s obvious, at least to me, that the Eagles are pulling out all the stops to get to the SB this year. And, it’s just as obvious that TT isn’t.

  • Reid

For Garcia to clear waivers there had to be 31 teams not claim him. I guess there are now 31 teams, including the Raiders who cut him, who have a GM who doesn’t want to win. I guess we just give the Lombardi Trophy to the Eagles and move on to next year.

  • http://Orlando Mark

It’s not that TT doesn’t want to win, everybody does. The question is what is he willing to sacrifice to win NOW, this year. I’m not even saying he’s wrong if you look at the big picture. But to say that 32 teams have a chance to go to the SB is a joke. In that cold brain of his, TT is giving us less than even odds or he would have paid up.
