I’m not too worried about it

With a day passed since the Packers’ season presumably came to end in a 31-24 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, I have decided to give the team one more week. I knew the Bengals were to going to be tough, I just didn’t think they would be that tough. Cincy is now my team of destiny – the Arizona Cardinals or Miami Dolphins of 2009. As for the Packers, their big turnaround has taken a slight detour, if they fall to the Rams next Sunday you can say they are officially lost.

The Packers glaring weaknesses are offensive line and running back, and both areas of concern are areas where the Packers’ brass has continually overrated the Packers talent. I think the problem is head coach Mike McCarthy’s goofy blocking scheme that requires smaller more nimble offensive lineman who are drafted to block the zone-blocking scheme but are getting killed in pass blocking. At least so far this year they are. I still think the Packers should have left Wells at center and Spitz at right guard instead of putting two unproven players on one side. Now with Clifton out the Packers are in deep doo.

Of course some of this wouldn’t be so apparent if the Packers had a running back. Ryan Grant hasn’t been the same since the Seattle playoff game two years ago and injury or not he no longer has his explosiveness and his penchant for fumbling reared its ugly head again yesterday. Grant shouldn’t be catching the ball out of the backfield anyway and the Packers idiotic decision to cut Tyrell Sutton even though Brandon Jackson was hurt is coming back to haunt them big time. Jackson has basically stolen money from the Packers since he joined the team and I know if the Packers cut him tomorrow he would never play another down in the NFL. At the very least Jackson should have been put on IR.

I was much more shocked at how bad the Packers defense played Sunday. They can shut down Jay Cutler and Matt Forte but let Cedric Benson and Carson Palmer pick them apart? Go figure? I’m going to give the defense the benefit of the doubt on this one because it was only their second game in the new scheme, however, this isn’t baseball, you don’t get 162 games, this is the only pass they will get from me. To be honest, at this point I might have more confidence in Dom Capers than I do in McCarthy. You guys have mentioned that McCarthy might have hired his replacement and that certainly could be the case if the offense doesn’t pull its head out.

The Packers have some major problems but they can only correct them from within. At this stage of the season rosters are set and only a trade could bring help and who do the Packers have to trade? A.J. Hawk maybe? Johnny Jolly? Pickings are slim and who would even have an offensive lineman they can afford to get rid of? Finding someone who could help right away would probably require too much in return. The Packers better stoke the fire under Mark Tauscher, they need him badly as it appears he was the heart and soul of the o-line.

The Bengals are twice the team the Rams are and if the Packers struggle under the Arch they are in big trouble. The fact that they have the Vikings the following week doesn’t help matters which makes this a perfect trap game. Had the Packers won yesterday I would have been more worried about the Rams than I am now, I expect a bounce-back victory setting up the showdown for the NFC North lead a week from next Monday.

OK, “super-sales”, you have valid points but you sure don’t support and encourage. A while back I believe you boasted of making 200% of your ’09 goal by mid-year. If this is true you either; 1) had a terrible year last year, or 2) don’t put much reality into your goal setting. Hence your all or nothing attitude toward the TEAM you supposedly think should reach the playoffs every year. It ain’t gonna happen! Wouldn’t it be more pleasant for you to just support the winner every year since you, obviously are so goal (ie, SuperBowl) oriented?

We’ve had these continuing arguements with one side pointing out all the mistakes, and the other pointing out all the positives simply proving the unknown nature of the game. There are a lot of very good football teams out there that are 1-1 right now. Just maybe we’re one of them?

PS, Matt, thanks for the use of “then” in your first sentance. Har, har, har, har!!!!!!!

My company sets 4 million dollar quotas for their sales guys. We did 6 million last year. And 3 months in have hit 4 million. (I said we were on pace to be at 200% of our number, BTW) I don’t set the number, I just hit it. That is my job.

Larry, we’ve gone to the playoffs one year with these clowns out of 5 years with TT. Before that we went 14 out of 16 years. And, I don’t think it is going to happen at this point because of moves, that TT has and is again failing to make. We are extremely vulnerable at the secondary position because TT cut Anthony Smith, which we were all bitching about 2 weeks ago and it is now biting us in the ass. He cut the number 2 safety all throughout training camp, based upon Bigby and Rouse staying healthy and playing well, neither of which has happened since they’ve been here (Bigby- healthy, Rouse-playing well). He brought in a FA that made alot of sense,a nd then cut him to go with his own guys. If you are going to do that shit, why bring him in in the first place?

The O-Line is in shables, yet TT refuses to go away from the guys he drafted. I made a statement on Sunday or Monday, that if they didn’t bring in an OT by Wednesday that he should be fired. The line MAJOR issues! Only Wells and Spitz have more than 2 games starting experience in the NFL at their respective positions. Why in the Hell hasn’t he brought someone in to shore things up? Make a trade, do something but you are just asking to end AR’s season by not going and getting some veteran help.

This is AN OBVIOUS move and again for whatever reason he again refuses to do it. I just don’t get it.

I am literally furious with the guy at this point. I have loved the Packers since the 1970′s, that is as far back as my memory goes, and it just pisses me off when I see someone on multiple levels making piss-poor decisions to train wreck a team. There are very good pieces on this team, but we’ve only had 1 winning record since he’s been here. That falls on the GM.

You said you think we are a good 1-1 team, I agree that we are but again TT’s gaffs are going to limit what we can accomplish. In the NFL teams, relentlessly attack your weaknesses.

St. Lousi will blitz the shit out of us, to attack our O-Line deficiency and play alot of 4 wide-receiver sets, run crossing patterns that require safety’s to switch and use alot of seam patterns to their TE.

I still think we will win on Sunday, but not convincling, and if they do win in a blow-out, that is what they should do against the Rams. It proves nothing. I had them at 9-2 before Thanksgiving and I just don’t see that happening becasue we are signing street free agents at safety two weeks into the season and our O-Line has 3 positions with only 2 games NFL experience starting at those positions. And at both Tackle positions.

TT should have had 5 OT’s in here and signed the best 1-2 he could find. But hell no, he has to continue to stick with his drafted players. It sickens me. Why in the hell isn’t John Runyan on this team, yet?

And how can you call yourself a Packers fan if your expectation isn’t for this tema to go to the playoffs this year? They have had4-5 years to get a playoff team ready. I have been harping on this as the goal, this year. Everyone else had that expectation last year, after our 13-3 season, when I thought we’d go 7-9.

My playoff expectation is that there are no excuses left for these guys. It has taken them 4-5 years to do what many teams (Baltimore, Falcons and San Fran all come to mind) have done in 1 or 2.

If they don’t get it done this year, they need to be fired. If you can’t see that, I don’t understand why you even care about this team.

Perhaps I can answer your 700 word rebutal in one sentence. Stacy Andrews (hurting) is the only backup PHI has on the right side and still they don’t call Runyon back!!!

  • Matt Hayton

More of a vent than a rebuttal. I’m just frustrated that’s all.

    I hear that!
