Packers will set up showdown

The St. Louis Rams luck could not be much worse. They start the season by traveling to Seattle and getting shut out 28-zip, then they cross the country to Washington D.C. to lose to the Redskins 9-7. Next up they face a caged dog in the Green Bay Packers in their home opener. Since losing to the Bengals Sunday the Packers have been ridiculed nationwide and reduced from playoff contender to also-ran with no chance to compete this year. You have to love the NFL.

Fortunately for Packers’ fans the Rams are not the Cincinnati Bengals. The Rams are in stage one of a major rebuilding project and might be the next team to go 0-16. Other than Steven Jackson they have nothing, and I mean nothing. I hate to even use the word “if” but “if” the Packers lose this game I will officially be off the Mike McCarthy bandwagon. The Packers’ talent level is so far above the Rams it is embarrassing. The only way the Packers could lose this game is if MCarthy has lost total control of his team and the players are either questioning his leadership or have already quit on him. I don’t see that happening, in fact I see just the opposite. McCarthy has been very ugly this week and I have to believe his players feel a lot more of that ugliness than we do.

I can see the Packers’ running game struggling again because, well, that is what they do, but I think the o-line will give Aaron Rodgers enough time to pick apart a woeful Rams secondary. One thing former Packers’ head coach Mike Holmgren was so good at was adjusting his offense to the strengths and weaknesses of his players whether it was the result of injuries or just poor play. If there is one thing that scares me it is McCarthy’s inability to adjust in those situations. This week it won’t matter, but when the Packers travel to Minnehaha next week it will matter big time.

I think the Packers are mad as hell and I think Rodgers really called the whole team out when he questioned their practice habits and in turn their professionalism, something that was certainly needed. We’ll see Sunday how the players respond to their leader on the field, my hunch this time is an easy win. I was right last week when I told you the Bengals would not be pushovers, but this week I think the Rams will be pushovers, not so much because of the difference in talent, but because the Packers need to take some aggression out. Packers 37, Rams 16.

    the future?

  • packer_bob

    MH,

“The future is now, after all, isn’t it, or are we still building for th.” Matt, you cut off mid-sentence. Are you OK, or did Al put a word limit on your posts?

    (Just kidding!)

  • packer_bob

Still building for the future. Can’t you hear the hammers and drills at work as we speak?

  • Matt Hayton

Another possibility would be to trade Kampman…bet hell these moves would take balls, so TT will do what he does,w hich is stand pat and hope for the best from his guys.

  • packer_bob

    Matt,

I hear what you’re saying, but I think it’s a little early to give up on Kampman. He’s been a defensive mainstay for us the last several years, is in his prime and I believe leads the team in tackles.

The problem is who is going to give up a good tackle right now? This needed to be addressed prior to the season. In fact, TT/MM would probably say it was addressed and that they felt completely comfortable the line heading into this year. Only time will tell if they’re completely wrong or if the line is just not performing up to speed so far.

I’m not disagreeing with you, if there is a diamond in the rough candidate out there they should be pulling him in, and looking hard to make sure they’re not missing out on someone. I just think it’s most likely that we’re going to have to improve with what we already have.

  • Rocky70

    @ MH

Like I said earlier, you need to put your ‘Madden 2010′ in storage for the season. Trading players in the NFL is a rarity for many reasons. The only one you need be concerned about is simply this: “It takes two agreeable parties to pull off any trade at anytime, off-season or during the season.” This just doesn’t happen in the NFL to any great degree….. It never has.

    @ PB

” You guys can keep trying to put me in your box all you want, it won’t happen. ”

The truth is you need to be put in a box, a UPS shipping box destined for Minneapolis. ….. We all know where your loyalties really fall & it ain’t the Pack… LOL.

  • packer_bob

    Rocky,

Thanks for telling me how I feel about things. I was unsure where my loyalties lay or who I was a fan of until you reappeared to tell me. Perhaps next you can tell me what kind of music I like or what my taste in fashion is.

What I meant by “the box” is that somehow I’m anti TT or MM. I’m not anti-TT or MM per se, I’m anti looking like shit. But go ahead and continue to try to put words in my mouth, you arrogant prick!

    And welcome back!

  • packer_bob

Where you been by the way? Stint in rehab over? Electroshock therapy finally done? Did your ass to lips transplant go swimmingly? What?

  • Pete H

I am done with the MM, TT, for, against crap…the only thiong I want to say is that trades in the NFL are extremely rare as Rocky said. The only times trades happen are draft time

  • packer_bob

I’m for us winning, whoever can get it done. But unlike Mae Tse-Tung, I’m only in favor of one Five Year Plan, not Five Year Plan #1 and then Five Year Plan #2 and on and on in perpetuity.

This is the last year of the Five Year Plan. No winny, no stayee. Revolution time!

    There’s just no way you’re an adult…

Next time you want to give us a recap of your previous week’s high school history lesson, it’s Mao Zedong and Mae West…

  • packer_bob

It was Mao Tse-tung when I went to school. I’m familiar with the alternate spelling, just not the way I learned it. The “Mae” part I’ll grant you, typo on my part.

By the way, what was it like when Mae West was causing an uproar with her filthy, filthy mouth and unchaste ways?
Did you live in a Hooverville or were you lucky enough to have a job? Tell me about President Roosevelt, I heard he was a great man! Were gas lamps still standard or was electricity pretty well common place in those days?

    I keed, I keed.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_Tse_Tung

As far as Rocky goes, you obviously have no sense of humor. He goes out of his way to take shots at people, so I like to get little jabs in on him. (Don’t have to do much more than that, he’s knitting his own noose with his words, he’s just too warped in his hatred of BF to know it yet.) I thought the “Welcome back!” after the insult was funny. The rest was just my way of asking him where he’s been. Infantile, to be sure, but it was intended to be so.

Lighten up a little, there Iccy. This isn’t the United Nations and we’re not trying to solve issues of war and peace. Just talking bout the Packers, man!

PB, hope you are right on 35-10, but I’d take a W anyway we can get it… I think it will be more like 24-21 Pack. even with all the shit we have going on I think pride will kick in and we’ll pull it out.

Matt – for once you and I agree. But I predict 6-3 Rams, hoping I will be way off again.

Anyone else going to be at the game? Would love to meet for a cold one prior to kick-off.

  • packer_bob

Just consulted the ultimate authority, Iccy, my wife. She lived in China for two years. She says technically it’s spelled “毛泽东 毛澤東” and I believe she’s correct.

She also informs me that Zedong is the spelling in pinyin, which is simply a different way to try to convert indecipherable Chinese symbols into some kind of English. I wouldn’t argue with her if I were you, she’s really, really good at it. (Chinese and arguing.)

And now back to our regularly scheduled Packer Talk.

  • packer_bob

    Reid,

Blow the foam off of a frosty one for me. Hopefully you’ll bring us the luck you did last time to turn the season around!

And I stand by my prediction of a thrashing, 35-10.

  • Rocky70

    @ PB

I was working at a “BF Rehab Center’ as a volunteer. …. The center is designed to help those Favre Apologists who want to return to a somewhat normal existence & reality since BF was shown the door….. Some of these dudes are in rough shape…. They can’t even talk without BF this, BF that…. you know, like some of your posts. … This center does some pretty good work at rehabilitating these ‘sad souls’ & returning them to the Packer fold. …. Want the address ?

  • packer_bob

Funny, Rocky, I like it. God bless you for all the hard work, I like people that give back to the community like that.

Just a tad misinformed though. Read back through, oh I don’t know, my last 20 posts or so and tell me how many times I’VE brought up Brett Favre. You haven’t heard me clamoring for him and he is completely irrelevant to our current situation except when he’s playing against us.

Then read through your last 20 or so posts and see how many times you’ve brought him up.
    Might be enlightening for you.

But I was sincere in my welcome back, you make good points sometimes. For example, your assessment of our ability to trade our way into improving the line is spot on, meaning it’s not going to happen. We’re going to have to make our current players better, the time for getting better players is over. I guess we’ll see what kind of football players and coach we have over the next couple of weeks.

  • AATP

Ugh Rocky, PB and Iccy… Jeez…

  • AATP

Have we figured out who has the bigger dick yet?

  • Rocky70

” Have we figured out who has the bigger dick yet? ”

I’m Swedish. … That should answer this question.

  • packer_bob

Sorry AATP, I don’t fire on anybody that hasn’t shot at me first.

Let’s just hope we get on track tomorrow, surely we can all agree on that? It would be extra nice if the Niners could upset the Vikes, doubtful though.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net Larry

Quit trying to patch things up p_b; when you go after my girl Mae West you’ve gone too far!

There, obviously, are those who are after TT and totally ignored what he has done to improve the team as stated in my 1:23 this AM. They also continually berate his #1 picks so rethink. Rogers-starter material anywhere, Hawk-starter who hasn’t lived up to the hype but a starter none the less, Harrell-a disappointment in any senario and maybe the current day Mandarich, who knows yet(?), Raji-should be starting, Mathews-should be starting. In ’08, after the 13-3, what need evidence did we have (other than our QB wanting to retire) that we needed other than backups or depth? You don’t use a #1 on an interior OL unless its Superman. Our trade of the 30th pick that year got us Jordy, Brohm, and Lee.

The quote of the day was “Brohm falls into the Packers lap” he threw for 10K yds and had a 24-9 record in college. Lee is an unknown as yet but is a physical bump and run guy like Harris that we won’t now have for the rest of the year-bummer but will be a starter.

All I see is the constant diatribe about the OL (see 1:23 and read again), Wahle/Rivera who aren’t even playing anymore, Favre, and Bush. Lets face it, bad breaks will kill best intentions every time and we’ve had our share of bad breaks!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net Larry

And…..you young pups, I do remember the hand pump in the kitchen on the family farm, when they brought out electricity to milk the cows, and horse drawn milk and ice wagons in Chicago. Was just a lad but some memories stick. As for FDR look up and read his 2nd Bill of Rights speech of ’45 and tell me how great he was. While your at it think about whats going on today and see the similarities——but back to football.

  • AATP

I would really like to see a Niner’s upset of the Viqueens, that would probably make my day regardless of a Packer win or loss – would obviously prefer the win. My disgust of the Viqueens has almost bypassed my dislike for the Bears, not quite, but close. I think the Packers win despite AR being sacked 4 times and us turning the ball over at least once. I think the D will be all over Mr. Jackson but he’ll still get 100 hard earned yards. Packers win 17-10 and it may well come down to the last few minutes of the 4th quarter. I would like to be completely wrong and the Pack embarrasses them at home by shutting them out in a 28-0 win but I’m finding that highly unlikely.

  • packer_bob

    Keep keeping it real, Larry!

  • http://Orlando Mark

Larry, I don’t “totally ignore” what TT has done to bring in talent. But I don’t think you should totally ignore what he’s done to our O and D-lines. If you were his mother you couldn’t be any more worshipful. I don’t get that you don’t see how average he’s been. Where does your faith come from, wishful thinking.
As for FDR, he’s great compared to other presidents. You know, Herbert Hoover and your boy W. He mobilized the country to fight a great war and a great depression. Your boy W mobilized the country to give tax breaks to the wealthy. How has that worked out. Not to mention his not so great war. Let’s see who do you like better than FDR. Nixon, Bush senior, the soap salesman (Boraxo), I think he won the war in Grenada. There’s a reason FDR is on Mt. Rushmore, think about that.

  • Pete H

FDR is not on Rushmore…..MY GOD! Look if you all want to swing your dicks around and sound smart, at least be correct. Trying to compare greatness of presidents is like debating why a Bears fan is a Bears fan, Pack fan, BEngals fan etc. Its useless. FDR lied thru his teeth to get us into a war that basically the entire country didn’t want to get into….sound familiar. Bush is a cowboy who sounded like Roscoe from the Dukes of Hazard, protected big business, overspent a budget to a degree that made Pelosi blush, and couldn’t hold a book right side up. Point being, they are all politicians……..they ALL lie to us. They ALL cut breaks to those who support them. 90% of them cheat on their spouses…including Kennedy, FDR, Jefferson, Clinton ..and some have argued that perhaps even Lincoln, who had no intention of ending slavery until it became politically neccessary. Washington and Jefferson owned slaves. Reagan sold the Iranians and Iraqis weapons. Obama, the great deliverer, has promised overwhelming transparency, yet has allowed the public to view his bills for the promised 5 days exactly once. Spent gobs of money in bills that most of them still probably haven’t read 1/4 of…I could go on and on…..Anyone else got any “great” presidents. Please stick to football

  • Pete H

    Pack win 34-17

  • iccyfan

Pete H Says: “FDR is not on Rushmore…..”

Teddy, Franklin – they were distantly related…

While FDR was probably more deserving of Rushmore immortalization, he wasn’t even President yet when blasting commenced; he got a really nice memorial on the National Mall instead.

If there were a Mt. Packermore outside Osh Kosh, it’d have to include Curley, Vince, Don Hutson & Ray Nitschke (or maybe Starr)! I think the Pack will establish the run game today and win comfortably…

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net Larry

AATP, 3rd game of the season and we need outside help already. I predicted (6) losses so am safe there, but not one in the first (4) games – sobeit.

Your senario on SF/MIN could very well happen, but I’m usually not that lucky. AR cannot take (4) more sacks right now or he’ll be walked off the field like Tebow!

Don’t see Jackson getting (100) but didn’t see Benson getting it either.

Lot of opinion above, few facts, just like our football expertise. In the end I just sit back w/ the Grands and say, “I was there and lived it”.

  • Pete H

Yes, Teddy is basically there on a bribe. I hope Jackson does go for 100…have him in fantasy. I still see Pack winning going away…otherwise long long year. Back half of the schedule looks grim

  • http://Orlando Mark

So much for Mt, Rushmore. I stand by the rest of it and apologize for posting any political stuff. Next time I’ll let it go, sorry.

  • packer_bob

You probably should stick to football, Mark, but I kinda liked it. I don’t mind when the direction of the posts veers off course for a little bit. Heading into a game, there’s only so much to say then it becomes a broken record anyway, so the occasional dalliance with politics, the spelling of Mao Zedong (just for you Iccy, just for you) and the like to me is a bit of a relief. Plus you get a little more sense of what the posters are like that way.

So the Bears don’t play till 3, which normally means the Pack should be the televised noon game, but for some reason it’s not. So I’m off to the pub to see the game. Enjoy, boys, hopefully I can toast a Packers victory upon my return!

  • Mel e Mel

IS anyoner readying the Tar & Feathers for MM & TT

  • Mel e Mel

Well the O- is still terrible HMM

  • Mel e Mel

Horrible Dlineman all over the league are checking to see if the Packers are on the schedule so they can record multi sack games

  • Mel e Mel

IF the Pack doesnt get a score off this 2nd Turnover Mcarthy should be shown the door.

  • AATP

OK, Rodgers is ticking me off a little – overthrows a sure TD… Grant has no vision, the cutback is constantly open. I realize this is a one gap offense, but jeez, if Grant had some vision he’d see things open up on the backside…

The only completed pass in the endzone was whistled dead… First quarter is sloppy for the offense. The defense is giving us every opportunity to put this game out of reach for the RAMS… Our offense is doing nothing and is really pissing me off. They are making the Ram defense look like a bunch of pro-bowlers. HEY, Lee made a hell of a catch, all for nothing but another damn field goal.

  • Mel e Mel

Sorry the Fire McLardy is my new credo

  • AATP

Too bad there really is nothing we can do about that offensive offensive line – Rodgers needs to get rid of that damn ball when nothing is available… jogging around the field is getting him nothing but tired. He’s not even getting the needed positive yards. Of course, he has happy feet cause this offensive line isn’t getting it done. It’s all about pad level :) just kidding everyone…

Still think Stephen Jackson is going to get 100… we don’t contain on the outside very well and Jackson is a load to take down.

  • Mel e Mel

DID Bulger get knocked out of the game?

  • AATP

    Yup, Bulger got knocked out…

  • AATP

Holy DD coming through again… what a catch, that will be on the highlight reels…

  • Mel e Mel

Well I am sorry The Rams Gave up none of the problems are fixed.

  • AATP

Put a fork in the Rams, they’re done… I guess things could be worse for the Packers – we could look like the Rams… But I agree Mel – The offense is still offensive… That’s what happens when your defense spend the entire quarter on the field, they get tired making our offense look better than bad.

  • AATP

Ok, not too excited about us keeping this game under control… we got two turnovers and only got field goals, that’s going to come back to bite us I think… ugh… This game should be so far out of reach right now and they’re still in striking distance…

  • Mel e Mel

IF the Rams were serviceable they win this game but since they are pitiful we get a freebie. No wonder MM wanted to talk Rams rather than the Bengals. Detroit would have scored more in the Red Zone with that field position. Philbin MM and Campen should all walk the plank. Bring in the Chin or Shanahan.

  • AATP

Ok, Al’s score is looking more reachable considering the current score and fact that the Rams may have just lost a starting receiver… If we don’t blow these guys out of the water the second half I’d be very surprised… I’d really like to see our running game open up a little bit.

  • AATP

Huh? Apparently our D thought the Rams were going to lay down right before the half…

  • AATP

    Ugh!!!
