Packers should take care of business

The Packers get just the team they needed today to remove the bad taste in their mouth, now they just have to go out and do it. Go out and play the game like we know they can and send the Lions back to Michigan with their 19th straight loss in Wisconsin. I’ll be there, follow me on Twitter at packernetblog.

The Lions are not a good team even though they are better than last year – kind of like an old t-shirt I used to have said  – “Better than nothing, but not much.” The Lions only really have one A+ player in Calvin Johnson and he is banged up and likely won’t play today. Retread Daunte Culpepper will start at QB and while he did throw for almost 300 yards last week against Pittsburgh, he is not the same Culpepper of old as he can’t run a lick anymore, evidenced by his seven sacks last week. The Packers will likely open up a little on defense today and put some heat on Culpepper.

The Lions secondary is in a state of flux and the their defensive line is banged up. The Packers offense might find their groove a little today. After a dreary week in Green Bay, this morning dawned a beautiful fall day built for football. Lambeau Field will be rocking and the Packers will win 34-17.

  • DD

well I hope your right AL I hope your right

  • Mel e Mel

Johnson according to ESPN is out I did see Dante run for a couple of 1st downs against Pittsburgh. I hope Dante is running for his life.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

What the hell is with these penalties again, they’re killing us dammit!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Looks like they’re attacking Kampman and Barnett all day!!!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Contagious! Get your head in the game guys, 70 yds so far and the 2nd isn’t half over yet.

  • doug r

when do we give up on aj hawk?

  • Cody

the oline still has HUGE!!!!! problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMFG this is really pathetic! we are dominating this game, but we cant get in the endzone, and Rodgers has been sacked FOUR TIMES by the LIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God help us when we play good defenses in a few weeks…

  • Mel e Mel

Well the same problems havent been corrected vs the lowly Lions. Its safe to assume that they wont be corrected. Did Babre give up one or more the sacks? When will he be released? When will Campen be relieved of his duties? Aaron Rouse blows a coverage and takes a bad angle he is shipped out. Does acccountability only mean something on defense? The Defense is the only hope for the Pack this year.
We are begging a 10 year vet to help salvage the season what a state of affairs this is.
Meanwhile Minny is handling Baltimore. Go Falcons

  • DD

How can you let the lions get 4 sacks on Aaron WHAT IS GOING ON so far out QB has been sacked 24 times GOD I HOPE HE CAN LAST because if we lose Rodgers ITS OVER

  • Mel e Mel

One more thing Woodson speaks up and backs up his play. Who is leading this offense? Rodgers seems afraid to hurt feelings and sorry thats not going to cut it. With the uncapped year next year KC, Tampa even perhaps Oak should have a decent lineman to for a draft choice. Please TT I am begging for a real RT and maybe a guard.

  • Mel e Mel

DD this is what happens when you place all the blame on last year on Bob Sanders and act like the offense was all peaches and creme. 4 sacks in a half by the lions if Campen were a real man he would resign.

  • Troy

It is 26-0 and everyone is caught up on the negatives. Good grief.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Geez, 130 yds on 13 peepees, to say nothing of Jordy’s runback, runback!

  • DD

Its time to get rid of some people if you can’t do your JOB then its time for you to go and if TT and MM cant do there jobs and get us some good players then they can go also I’M SICK OF THIS MESS

  • http://Orlando Mark

IMO we should be happy with the win, the easy schedule and that #12 isn’t hurt. A lot to be thankful for. No one cares about style points. The young guys are showing improvement with game experience so who knows. It’s a long season.

  • Mel e Mel

All the bright spots are on Defense where a real coach is running the operation. TT made the wrong hire the right coach is in NO.

  • Ghost of Scooter McLean

What exactly did TT, MM or James Campen do to encourage Chad Clifton to incur four penalties? Is it because he’s too young and inexperienced? Is it because he’s never been coached on where to line up?

I understand fan concerns with reports that MM is tolerant of aggressive penalties, but that’s not what we were seeing today. Most of these were mindless lack of focus types and completely on the player. It’d be nice if a couple respected veterans convened a kangaroo court and started levying fines for penalties incured. I’d nominate Woodson and Clifton – Cliffy could fine himself $2500 for each of his transgressions and get the kitty started! At the end of the season, the pot could be donated to charity…

Other than the fact there were plentiful missed opportunities, we should be happy with a victory. If we want to be upset about anything, it should be with the Vikings escaping yet again. They should be 4-2!

  • Mel e Mel

Who really cares about a victory vs the Lions with Drew Stanton and no Calvin Johnson.
Detroit is a glorified UFL team. The week to week performance of the OLine is the job of Campen. IF the team commits a dozen penalties vs Detroit what will happen when they play a real team? There is a stunning lack of leadership on the offensive side of the ball.

  • Mike from Arizona

I know you take it one game at a time. With Detroit’s third string QB, the Packers seems to be coasting the last three quarters. Maybe they are resting or playing at 80%. If they were playing a payoff team with this effort today, they would have been destroyed. It would be nice if every player played as hard as Driver. What a professional.

  • Mike from Arizona

It would be nice if we could trade Hawk and Poppinga before the deadline.

If not, cut them after the season and take the savings (Hawk ($5.9M) and Poppinga ($2.8M)) and get some OL players.

I would also start playing Bishop, Jones and Thompson (when he gets health) more. I know they have more of a motor than Hawk and Poppinga.

  • roy jamison

Not good news with Cliffy down again. But a win is a win. Also noticable is the absence of Jennings in the offense. I didn’t see the game, but is he doubled teaMED EVERY play?

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

One really has to wonder if Clifton thinks he is indespensible! That was inexcusable for a ten year veteran. Man, I would be busting Lang and Barbre (s’) chops this week to prove to me that they are the future (make that now). But then again, I wasn’t too pleased with Clifton and Tauscher last year either……..!!!!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Mel e Mel you can’t be serious. A Division win; what are you implying it doesn’t mean anything?

  • DD

I hope rodgers can last the remainder of these games he has been sacked 25 times so far

    25 LORD HELP

  • Mel e Mel

A division win against team that may not win another game this year???? We are fortunate Culpepper got hurt. Turnovers and boatloads of penalties vs the frickin Lions.
The Lions are a given. Larry Tex maybe you dont remember they are the only non-expansion team to go o for the season. 3 points in the 2nd half vs the motor city kitties. Division games only mean something if another division opponent could actually lose the game. Its like tap in putt it only hurts if you dont make it. IF the Pack made some progress I would be very happy. Only the defense is making stride which is great but the offense is still a work in progress. Does anyone believe this team can compete vs the Saints or Giants?

  • Pete H

Good beating by the D. They did what they should against a rotten team like that….O line woeful Grant ditto

  • Steve Cheez

13 penalties, 2 turnovers, pathetic red-zone, 5 sacks. That just ain’t gonna cut it against an actual professional football team.

  • Mark Troy

    Was AJ Hawk even playing?
    Did he make any plays?

  • cdk4205

Cheez – that isn’t the point. It was enough against the team they were playing today.

A win is a win! At 3-2 GB would now be the #6 seed based on tiebreakers —- 10-6 is still a scenario I could see happening.

  • Dan

What bothers me is the Lions played without 3 starters from their defensive line and we still can’t protect Rodgers.

If the Lions had a healthy team, it would have been downright scary.

After watching the Queens defense look like a sieve in the 4th quarter, I’m grateful we have another shot at them. Need to use the Browns as a tuneup game and fix the penalties and sacks.

NOTE to MM. If the 3 and 5 step drop work early on, why not pull a Lombardi and stick with it until they stop you? These 7 step drops are turning Rodgers into a pinata.

  • Steve Cheez

Thanks, CDK. 1/2 full, right? At least Da Bearse lost!

  • PA PackFan

A win is great but Pack still has issues. Some can be corrected such as penalties – no need for so many of them. Wht do some of these guys suffer from ADD that they can’t stay focused. Sacks- more of a problem. Only possible fixes are to trade for good OL, plus Rodgers still holding onto ball to long. If no one is open – toss it out of bounds also as I’ve said before – go to shotgun more in passing downs or maybe try hurry up offense so opponents D can’t play situational football.

Run game really bad – contributes to opponents willingness to blitz. maybe it the zone blocking scheme that is to blame. Anyway, should win against Cleveland next week, but if Pack doesn’t get it together, jared Allen will be having Fasvre for dinner the week after.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

I’m just so damned upset! Not a doubt in my mind that if we had Faneca, Favre, Gonzales, Moss, Smith, Wahle, Rivera, Pace, Sharper, S. Jackson, R. Brown, Joe Thomas, Hart, Garcia, Birk, and Williams (wait, he doesn’t start at CLE anymore), Rouse (but again wait, we didn’t like him when he was here), or Tauscher (oh wait, we have him) and Sean Payton as coach we would be 6-0 and a shoo-in for a Super Bowl win. It’s so simple, why can’t TT see that? Wouldn’t we be just as happy as a whale pod heading north to mate?

And now look at us, 3-2, 2nd in Div 2 1/2 behind MIN, having the tie breakers against CHI but no hope. I guess thats all there is.

  • Pack4life

Larry Tex lets remember as Thanksgiving nears what we do have. We do have 25 we could give up 75 or even 85 sacks now that would be special.

  • just saying

I wonder how many sacks will we have at the end of the season? we already have 25 so far my quess 40 if not more I hope im wrong

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Yeah you’re right Pack4. Oh well, another year to set records, congrats DD. Wanted to separate him from the OL and the Specials, but all three could have records when its all over.

  • Reid

LarryTex: We could probably upgrade and bring in the Dallas Cowboy’s Cheerleaders too.

  • roy jamison

In the deals that never happen because they make too much sense…wouldn’t it be better for everyone if Kampman was sent to Tampa to reunite with Jim Bates? Having said that…it’ll never happen.
    http://blogs.tampabay.com/bucs/2009/10/bucs-may-not-be-done-wheeling-dealing-for-dl.html

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

There again, Roy, “too much sense”? I say it comes under the heading of “Things we don’t know”. If K goes for an OT its Trueblood (4yrs), Penn (4yrs), the starters or the backup Dotson who is a rookie. I would think TB would have to throw in a pick or two also, but they got burnt the other way last year when Kellen Winslow cost them a 2 and a 5. Think value and what K is worth; who really knows since no offers have been leaked? Could Kampy yet turn around and learn to play standing up? He sure was picked on yesterday, but seems to have survived.

  • Pack4life

Heres things I do know Kampman wont be back next year unless he agrees to pay for league minimum so get something for him. Either of the Tampa lineman are good but they are not Joe Thomas. PFW is reporting Cleveland is listening to talk for Thomas. In that case use a # 1 to get him.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Looks good on paper, but wouldn’t we have to give up K and a 1 for a 25yr old who could start for the next 10 years? I’d do it anyway if he is on the left side, not right.

  • ChrisAZ

I think we need to trade Kampman. His trade value is high and he just doesnt fit well in the 3-4 system. He played in his old position 12 times against the lions and responded with his best game of the year, but he cant do that every week, otherwise we might as well go back to a 4-3. I say trade him and get a decent running back or some offensive linemen.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Chris, we could easily go back to the 4-3. The only reason it didn’t work last year is we didn’t have the D-linemen. Jenkins was hurt, KGB was finished and we didn’t have Raji, who’s starting to get up to speed. Jolly is playing well and I’d like to see more of Wynn. Capers said he would use either defense.

  • http://Orlando Mark

The 4-3 might even be an unexpected change up like the wildcat on offense. Barnett is better suited to it when he has big tackles in front. Just a thought.
