Packers-Browns Game Blog

12:03 PM: Here we go. Penalty on the first play. How can hitting the pylon be out of bounds when if you touch it running the ball it is a touchdown?

12:20 PM: The only team that can beat the Packers is the Packers. Failure to convert on 4th and inches is not a good start. And now a wasted challenge costing a timeout. It was close, but I wouldn’t have challenged, not enough evidence to overturn – you couldn’t see the ball. We need a turnover now.

12:50 PM: Wow, Spencer Havner? A 45-yard TD pass and the Packers are out in front. Nice defensive stand but another special teams penalty. 12-men this time. Hard to believe, now the Browns have a first down. That is pure coaching. 10 bucks says the Browns score on this drive now.

1:02 PM: Sweet! 71 yard TD pass to Driver! The veteran Driver didn’t have the flat out speed to get in the zone but his savvy got him all the way. A great stiff-arm got him just enough distance to score. Packers 14, Browns 3. Not quite game over, but close. Nice game plan to run the ball the first quarter, opening up the passing game. Why didn’t I think of that?

1:31 PM: A solid first half – 21-3. No shutout though so there is room for improvement. Rodgers needs to work on his accuracy, two imcompletions in the first half. We get the ball to start the second half so lets pour it on.

1:55 PM:  Here comes the penalties – cost the Packers points. Lee with an illegal contact call and now a dropped pass. Browns have great field position after a missed 55-yard field goal. Bad call there, the Packers just gave the Browns life.

3:22 PM:  Finally, complete and total domination. The Packers best game of the year. Two shitty teams but we beat them by a combined 57-3. The Packers ran the ball well, passed the ball well and did what they had to do. Bring on the Vikings.

MM’s playcalling netted 460 total yards with 202 on the ground………. No sacks…………… No turnovers ………..

Credit the players but just maybe the playcalling had something to do with it……… Ya think? ………. PeePee …….. you’ve embarrassed yourself again…………

  • Steve Cheez

Cincy up 28-0 on Da Bearse. This day just keeps getting better and better.

  • PackerPete

rocky save the name calling, get above it.

I asked for better play calling and when I saw it I acknowledged it.

I will repeat… I simply want to see the Pack dominate, if it means TT and MM moves help, I will acknowledge them.

I will also comment on less than perfect things I observe.

so… keep the comments on the Pack and save the personal stuff for when you can meet me in person.

  • PackerPete

I took Miami as my upset special this week…

but I also took the bears. never felt so good about being wrong…

  • Oddball

Coach Mike gets the same credit everybody else gets. They went on the road and firmly whipped a professional football team. Most importantly from my perspective, Rodgers had protection. I don’t think there’s any doubt that we’re a good football team. We’ve been good for a very long time.

The disagreement comes when we start talking about what it takes to become a great football team.

  • 4205

I guess MM knew Clv was pathetic and that’s why he started so conservative.

Can’t nap like that early every week, but defense held – great game from Hawk!

  • 4205

Bores get FG – can’t have everything, but 31-3 is close!

  • Rocky70

    PP

    Tough guy………. LOL.

Your best bet would be to ask Al to delete your early posts……… Calling for a coach’s head in the first half of a game that ends up 31-3 has to be an embarrassment …………. To read your rants & raves is a waste of everyone’s time ….. Please clean it up & I’ll consider reducing the PeePee reference…… LOL.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Realize MIN tougher, but start for the OL kids. Hawk, Barnett, Bigby, and Kampy, may have been up against CLE but they did the right thing regardless. Penalties still too much, but do you really want to complain too much; ie, weren’t they agressive in nature rather than stupid?
I would think that if nothing else was gained today it was confidence. Tough opponent next week, we’ll see.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

I know it was CLE but Rodgers was a 155; as of yet no one else close today. Concentration in practice this week guys………..!

  • Rocky70

Looks like Da Bears have alot of work to do after today………. They look pathetic…….

  • Mel e Mel

Saw the Vikes Game. Favre was really the only thing the vikes had going. They dared Peterson to run. Vikes oline is dirty, Backup TE Dugan leg whipped James Harrison. Favre absolutely went queen on the fumble return touched the and spun the other direction. Pitt could have put the game away early but Mendinghall Fumbled at the goaline. Mendinghall never saw the field again after that play. Take notes MM

Going to be fun seeing what we bitch about this week. I sure like our chances next Sunday. A win over the Queens next week and this team is on its way to great things. Yes it was two cupcakes, but the Packers did what they were supposed to do. The defense is getting better and Aaron Rodgers is on fire. I like our chances next Sunday.

Can we please focus on the game this week? I beg you…

  • Oddball

    Game focus.

It will be interesting to see what comes of the Oline against the Queens. How well they handle the pass rush could dictate the entire game. McCarthy better have a plan in store if it becomes clear that we still can’t stop them straight up.

I see the same strategy the Steelers used. Stack the box. Stop AP. Make Favre win the game. Try to smack him around. He’s a 40 year old guy – iron man or not, there’s only so much of that he can take, and he’s on the road in what has to be an emotional game. Get him to press, and we win pulling away.

Favre still might beat us if he plays lights out, but if they get Peterson rolling, that could get ugly.

It nearly goes without saying – protect Rodgers at all costs. If Rodgers goes, we’re done.

  • PackerPete

    childish of you rocky.

my assertions that we need a better head coach are not based on one game, this one or any other, but on the body of work presented over years.

take it however you want it.

your lack of acknowledgement that others opinions have any merit whatsoever labels you as quite immature, so I will simply ignore anything you have to say, not that I will be missing much.

have the last word. It will be the last you hear from me, unless you continue to read my posts, your option.

  • PackerPete

I think our line, on grass, will be the difference in turning the previous result against the queens around.

eithe rcliffy returns and plays well, or lang stays in the lineup and builds on his performance and the others use home field to thier advantage, namely a little slower natural grass field, to moderate the rush and ARod will be fine dissecting the queen secondary.

I just hope we can maintain the threat of a running game.

the other side of the ball is going to come down to our DL’s ability to neutralize the queen OL and let our LB make plays in the running game. containment of peterson is critical without committing safety help regularly leaving faver with one on ones and time in the pocket.

  • Rocky70

    Per Admin:

” Going to be fun seeing what we bitch about this week. ”

IMO, I like the idea of firing our HC from an earlier post in this thread……… If the Pack are trailing at half against the Vikes, we could fire MM at halftime………. LOL ……. That would be a classic move & no doubt draw some positive posts from some of our ‘Super PackFans’ that frequent this blog …….

You know, something like this: —– ” this a$$hole McCarthy has to simply resign. ”

    …….. Wait, I can’t use this line……. It’s already taken by Pee-Wee. ……….. LOL … Sorry, I can’t resist…… It’s so easy it’s funny.

  • Rocky70

51 passes by BF today & 18 rushes by AP. ……. 1st & goal at the Steeler 1 yard line…… AP for no gain followed by 2 incomplete passes from BF followed by a FG……. Walter Payton must have rolled over in his grave………….

If Chilly is braindead again next week, that will be worh at least 6 or 7 points for GB………

  • Mel e Mel

ESPN is reporting that the vikes best defender Antoine Winfield is out 4-6 weeks. Lovely !! Reading the Chicago Papers They are lighting the torches over there. I like our performance vs Cincy a lot more than I did when it occured.
One drive the Vikes had about 3 straight penalties on their oline. You may not get to Favre with the Pressure but that oline will fold in crunch time.

  • monty

Dang Al, I was wrong!! Pass me some of that Packer koolaid!! And the Queens found out what it is like to get lost in Favreland!! Who knows maybe we too can help them get lost next week. As I told my daughter who grew up watching Mr. Favre, yes his stats are always good the first half of the season, but he fades and fumbles the second half……yesterday he was true to form, although Chester Taylor was at fault for the second Steeler touchdown. I didnt get to see the Packer-Brown game here as AFN (Armed Forces Network) chose to show the match up of the Vikings and Steelers. How did Lang old up at tackle? You know if he did ok, I think he should get the start next Sunday instead of Clifton. Clifton just isnt the same as he was in 07. Talk about drama, I cant think of another instance where you have the symbol of a team coming back where he made his fame to take on his old team like this. Brett Favre playing at Lambeau for the Queens would be like Ray Nitsche playing linebacker for the Bears!

  • iccyfan

Why don’t we talk about this, with quote from the Eric Goska article on the main page:

“Since becoming coach, McCarthy’s team has given up 120 first downs by penalty. The 49ers are a distant second with 88 surrendered. McCarthy’s team led the league in this category in 2007 (44) and 2008 (33). Their 16 this year again is the most in the NFL and puts them on a pace to threaten the team record they established in McCarthy’s second season. In 54 regular-season games as coach, McCarthy’s Packers have played only four contests in which they did not give up a first down by penalty. The club has allowed at least one in each of the last 19 games, the second longest streak in team history behind the 21 achieved by the sub-par operation Curly Lambeau fielded in his final years.”

I guess the stock answer to this question is “aggressiveness”, but that doesn’t cut it when our D isn’t at the top of the categories which benefit from being aggressive (sacks, QB knockdowns, etc.). Twelve men on the field for a punt return? Per Goska, six Brown first downs came via Packer penalties. That’s not gonna work when we’re playing better competition…

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

One can’t very well argue a good side of the penalty issue. The facts are there. It has to come down to coaching philosophy and that the issue is not very high on MM’s order of things to be done or area of great concern. I wonder how he explains it to TT?

Yesterday was a great example of the Woody Hayes vs Bill Walsh kind of football. The speed turf has sure changed the game along with the “indoors” venue. NO was down 21 pts at one point and won. Also is the phenomenon of Big Ben and Manning at 6-5 230 vs the Favre, Rodgers’ at 6-2 220. Used to be a QB had to have a “throwing lane” now it seems those big guys can just look over the lines.

    Times sure are a-different.

  • Three Lakes Terry

Amazing! 31-3 and all the complaining. We had good defensive play, great quarterback play and the offensive line stood up (nice job by Lang) to the test. You would think we were talking about the Bear game Sunday. That was ugly. I am not sure how the game against the Vikings will turn out but I think that we can and should win. In Minnesota the Vikings brought their A+ game and Favre could not have played any better. We brought our C+ to B- game. I just think that we will up our game a bit and it will be hard for them to play another A+ game. If we get by the Vikes, as I think we will, then its going to be 6-2 or maybe 7-2 ahead. Are the Packers perfect? No. We have some warts, injuries and I always worry about the coaching. But we are playing for first place this coming Sunday and that’s not all bad. Lighten up guys.

  • Bob

We need to beat the queen’s out right this week, I don’t like our chances in a close game with Crosby being the deciding factor, Longwell is a much better kicker at this point. So let’s put the queen’s away early, knock the hell out’ve Favre! and call it a day!

  • roadking

lets not get to excited remember we played the browns

  • Arch

Beating the Browns and the Lions by 100-0 means absolutely nothing. Packer homers please re-read what I just said. No different than going 4-0 in the PRE-season.

What does mean something is bringing Favre & Co. outdoors on enemy turf in low 40s with rain. REVENGE also important. Having Berrien and Harvin banged up doesn’t hurt either. Having Bigby back helps too. Ditto Clifton/Tauscher. OT now has depth in case of in-game injuries. We will miss Finley and Nelson, both of whom had big play TDs in RD 1. Time for Pack to play a complete game. With Winfield out 6 weeks, Gennings and run game should fare better too. Pack 24 Vikes 17.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Understand what you’re saying, Arch, but you and roadking might wan’t to rephrase it. W/o winning what we’re supposed to we are 2-4 not 4-2. Need a little more positive attitude.

  • Pack4life

Labeau had the same game plan on defense as Capers did several weeks ago, except his starting safeties were in position. One goaline posession the vikes only gave it to Peterson once. Take away the 4th Quarter and Peterson did almost nothing. Favre had the same look on his face yesterday as he had vs the Giants in 07. Dead spin has a wonderful photo of Favre kneeling down in the wake of Pittsburgh defenders.
The announcers were getting on the steelers for not attacking Winfields replacement.
I know MM will get down to business on that. Pitt was able to run yesterday but to beat the vikes you have to be up at least 10 points like the steelers were and Favre will implode.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Well, Pack4 there is the quandry that drove so many of us up the wall for the last 5 years. Brett is either the 4th qtr “comback king” or he is the gunslinging, game on the line, “interception king” who will throw into triple coverage. Take your pick, because you can claim either/both are right. I think he is more dangerous now, however, because he hasn’t had a RB like Peterson.

I’m as positive as I can be, but I’ll bet the line ends up -4 for MIN based on -7 for the Vikes on a neutral field, and +3 for the Packs home field. My logic says even. We do have more to lose then they do……….!

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Ya all do realize that B*tt F*ck and Vikes got a couple wins off the Lions and Browns also. And a gift from the 49ers……..

  • Rocky70

    Interesting from P. King:

” I think Favre believes he’ll have more than a few supporters in the stands. But a longtime Green Bay resident told me recently what he thinks, from talking to the townies, that the crowd will be almost entirely anti-Favre, and the sentiment will be loud. ”

The goal is to boo him into using timeouts because signals cannot be heard………. Welcome home, Brent.

  • Oddball

Yeah, I also realize that our four wins came against teams that are a collective 5-21 and that the Steelers sealed their win at home on a tipped ball.

Does anybody want to make a case for our front 7 over the Steelers? No? Didn’t think so.

I expect this to be a tough game. Time to man up or shut up.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Anyone notice how far back Orlando Pace was lining up….. looked like he was in the backfield sometimes. Poor poor Bears.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Now wait a minute, DA, your talking about one of those guys more than a few on this blog criticized TT for not picking up. Besides the ref called Cliffy on that because his helmet was up rather than straight ahead. Potato, potahto. Heh, heh, heh….

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Your right LT, everyone is always better than what we have. I believe I saw the O-line take a step in the right direction this weekend. Lang was out in the second level alot, getting blocks. Grant ran up his back once when he was out there….. at the second level he should have picked one side or the other. But he got some good carries, he looked rusty, so these games were just what the doctor ordered. This is a better team than the Vikes faced last time, but they’re a little better also. But the Pack still has “alot of better” they can get and they’re young and full of it and will be coming on strong at the end of the year when other teams start to peter out a bit!!!! This team can do the X’S and O’s but they’re still need the X-factor. They’ll have it w/a win on Sunday.

  • Rocky70

Brett Swain done for the year.
    J. Finley a long shot to play against Vikes.
Taush cleared to full paticipant in practice.

GB needs another WR immediately……. MM says a decision on “who” will come in 24 hours……… Jake Allen is the only WR on the PS…….. 6’4″ – 196 pounds.

  • Oddball

    Sacks allowed –

    Tears – 11
    Packers – 25

At 6 mil or so for the first year, the price was kinda steep, but he’s part of a line that’s doing much better pass protecting than ours has so far. They are in the toilet for rushing offense. Take it for what it’s worth I suppose.

I think we learn a lot about this year’s team this week. Standings aside, a win or even a tight game with good pass protection tells us we’re on our way. Multiple sacks on Rodgers – regardless of the score – tell me something else.

  • Rocky70

Time to start voting & put a few Packers into the Pro-Bowl.

    Vote early & often.

    http://www.nfl.com/probowl/ballot

  • Devil’s Advocate…

I love how B*tt F*ck and the Vikings lost though………. kinda got to feel what the other team feels like after a lucky last play catch or a missed 44 yard FG that most kickers make 9 out of 10 times!!!

  • Pack4life

Oddball Comparing Cutler to Rodgers in sacks allowed isnt fair. Cutler will much rather throw a pick than take a hit. Rodgers is a lot like Big Ben and will stand in much too long.

  • Pack4life

Oddball the Steelers have been in the same defense almost 20 years, The Pack has been in this defense 6 months.

  • Jack in Columbus

Let me say this to all those Packers fans planning to welcome warmly and enthusiastically Brett Favre’s imminent return to Lambeau Field: If you do, you’re a fool!

Favre will have one thought running through his head when he enters the stadium on Sunday: “I hope I play lights out, we crush the Packers, and all their adoring fans shuffle home silently in a state of severe depression.

Favre has no love loss for Wisconsin, Green Bay, the Packers or their fans. In fact, he loathes them all. He wants to exact revenge on his old team and its management. Hell hath no fury … like an aging, spent, egocentric QB scorned.

Packers fans should loudly boo Favre just like they would any other Black ‘n’ Blue Division opponent’s QB. That’s a tested, proven, time honored tradition in Lambeau. I just love traditions.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

The mayor wants ideas to welcome B*tt F*ck back to Green Bay, how about changing his street to a different name????

  • AATP

How ’bout changing the name of his Steakhouse?

  • Oddball

P4L – watched any Bear games this year? I have. The Bear line protects better than ours does in my opinion. Yes, Rodgers hangs in longer than Cutler. Cutler throws a lot more INTs. Rodgers also has far better receivers and a few years in his system over Cutler. In addition, their run offense isn’t exactly burning up the field at about 29th in the NFL. Agreed. It’s not a level comparison.

But the way I see it, the Bears are not as good as we are – and yet we’ve given up a near league leading number of sacks and they haven’t. That can’t be entirely on Rodgers. Last year as a first year starter, he was sacked 34 times the whole year. If we’d been playing quality teams so far instead of three cupcakes, he might have had that many in six games.

Yes – the Steelers have some history playing 3-4 – the implied question was, do you expect our front 7 to do what Pittsburgh did against the Queens?
