Packers-Cowboys Game Blog

3:20 PM:  Three and out by the offense and the Cowboys are on the move. Packers look over-matched big time so far. This must be what the Lions feel like every week.

3:31 PM: McCartney has to be the dumbest coach in history. He bitches about losing the field position battle every week on special teams then rolls out a kicker who can’t kick for a 52-yard field goal giving the Cowboys explosive offense a short track. I would have rather seen them go for it that do that shit.

4:04 PM:  Rodgers is simply gun-shy now. Havner was wide open and Rodgers wouldn’t take the five yards. Havner gets pissed and drills a guy out of bounds. What a horribly coached team this is. Rodgers is in a major sophomore slump. Earlier Green was open over the middle for five or six and he wouldn’t throw it. If you are going to be a West Coast Offense then be a West Coast Offense. It’s 0-0 now but the Cowboys win this going away.

4:17 PM:  Amazing how well a screen works. Second time not so well. I like the way the defense is playing but with time running down in the half I suspect the Cowboys turn it up a notch. The shutout will be broke by halftime.

4:28 PM: If we can just hold them here.

4:36 PM:  Rodgers is not very smart. You throw that ball away not lose three yards. No way Bing makes this.

4:58 PM:  We might win the challenge, but did Tramon Williams just tackle himself?

5:18 PM:  I am very happy with the way the defense is playing, by far its best game of the year so far. It may be all for naught if the offense doesn’t pull its head out.

5:35 PM: Jordy catches that in his sleep.

5:39 PM: Mike McCartney is the worst coach in the NFL or has the worst people in the NFL working for him. I have a 10″ TV and I can see that wasn’t a TD. McCartney will fire Joe Blow from the grounds crew but lets the bozo who tells him to challenge this call keep his job? We will not win this game because of that stupidity. McCartney needs to go. Period.

5:42 PM:  All the momentum of the drive is gone. I doubt the Packers score.

5:45 PM:  OK! This is all on the defense now. The offense did its job. I still am not confident. I just don’t trust our defense.

5:55 PM:  My boy Havner! I just called it too! Can we hang on?

6:06 PM:  Mike McCartney is clearly the dumbest coach in the NFL history. Even if we win this game the future is not bright.

6:14 PM:  Game winner by Charles Woodson!!! Holy cow!

6:32 PM: Like I said, if every instinct I have is wrong, then the opposite must be right. I am a very happy man right now. If we can just get some consistency now, we are not out of it.  Philly lost, Atlanta lost, the Packers may be right back in the hunt for their goal of meeting Brett Favre again is still alive.

Over and out for tonight. Going to have a pop or two tonight I’m thinking.

“The ruling on the field is that the Green Bay coach is a MORON!”

  • Luke

haha MM is a moron- read the rulebook- somebody please take that red flag away from him…now.

  • packrat

    There goes the shutout

  • zach

How many interference calls in on drive?

Edit: Woodson is the best D back in NFL history.

  • packrat

Way to go Woody! Saved the shutout so far!

  • packrat

As a Packer fan in Cowboy country. This is sooooo sssssswwwwweeeeeeettttt!!!!!!

  • zach

I’m gonna puke. 3rd and long draw play. F U MM

  • packrat

The refs will need new flags when this is over. They’ve worn these out.

  • zach

So much for the shut-out. That’s okay though. I am just glad we won.

  • packrat

    Damn! no shut out

  • http://Orlando Mark

Hooray! The roller coaster is going up. I wouldn’t even mind hearing from Rocky after this.

  • Jack in Columbus

I thought we would lose by 11 pts, 33-22 or thereabouts. Amazing D tonight. Still sloppy in many phases ad the O line still needs much work. But a very satisfying win.

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

Hey – I’m disappointed in the lack of Rocky too, you have to stick to your team through thick and thin. At least I come back. Where you at Rock? Where you at?

  • CheesyD

Amazing job by Woodson and the defense.

McCarthy should have his red flag taken away from him as he doesn’t understand how to use it.

A win over the Cowboys is sweet.

  • Stomps

Meet Favre again? do we really want the loss to Favre in purple in the playoffs?? I guess so…

  • dd

I am so happy that the packers won

    HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY

  • Mark Troy

Woohoo, it was worth my other nut! :)

    7-4 Here we come!!

  • jonnyfootballhero

come on stomps, enjoy the win… I’m for going to the playoffs and kicking the crap outta favre… I’m hoping the Packers can build momentum off this game and confidently go into the playoffs instead of hopefully limping there. I know I’ve been critical of this team all season, but it was nice to see them win a game against a quality team. I think the preseason defense finally showed up and really played well today. As much as I appreciate everything he’s done in a Packers uniform, I think it’s time to say goodbye to Kampman… He’s clearly not needed and is a liability in coverage. It would really suck if he had a season ending injury and thus lower his trade value. Besides Rodgers, I think Clay Matthews is the best draft pick Thompson has made. I think he’s only going to get better and eventually become a real star in the NFL. I’m feeling really good about the team after today… I really hope they keep it together, cuz they really could be capable of great things… doesn’t mean I wont change my mind if they play poorly down the road and drop winable games!!

  • Mel e Mel

NFL Network said the corners played more bump and run coverage today. If thats the case then you really need to question the sanity of MM & Capers. Miles Austin was a non-factor today after destroying the league for several weeks. I want to believe but next week will convince me. Singletary wont give up on the run unless he is down 20. SF plays very tough so no hi-5s quite yet.

  • packrat

Let’s knock off the stupid penalties and we might have a go at it.

  • Sammy

We won inspite of MM, not because of MM. He still needs to go. However, the win still feels good. Don’t get too excited though, if we lost to Tampa………

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

I guess the Packers sucked today. This from the JS:

“Two forced fumbles and an interception by cornerback Charles Woodson helped the Packers get the second half of their season pointed in the right direction following a 17-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at Lambeau Field on Sunday. Woodson’s huge day and a strong performance by his defensive teammates helped mask more unsightly penalties and sacks allowed by the Packers.”

Unsightly penalties? Sacks? What a horrible win for the Packers. I’m sure they would want to give this one back. No real man would accept it. The Packers did not deserve to win this game.

  • CheesyD

Sure the Packers earned the win, but you have to admit it was mostly due to the defense. And yes there were a ton of unsightly penalties and sacks. Again. Still.

A good win, but lots of room for improvement.

  • Brad

How can yo say that we won inspite of MM! You torch him when we lose and give 0 credit for a win. He did a great job and had the Packers ready to play and the most import thing is the team showed heart.

  • jonnyfootballhero

has there been a packer_bob sighting in the last 24hrs?? I’m kinda worried about him…also, would love to hear his analysis of the game.
And as much as I usually disagree with him, I’d like to hear from Rocky also…anyone know what’s happened to these guys??

  • ChrisAZ

Well I have to say I’m very impressed with our defense and intensity today. The packers actually look like they wanted to play. It’s an awesome win and moral booster, but 5-4 is still only mediocre. Don’t let this win mask the terrible coaching of McCarthy. Anyone got a 3rd challenge? anyone? Still way too many penalties and special teams still isnt looking that special. We’re better off fair catching every punt instead of getting a block in the back/hold/chop block penalty every time. I’m a happy man tonight but I’ still calling for MM’s job.

  • iccyfan

admin Says: “Where you at Rock? Where you at?”
Thanks Al – now I’ve got that stupid rap stuck in my head; somehow I don’t see our Rock identifying with Kid…

I was out of town from Sunday – Friday of last week and didn’t really have much to say after the Tampa debacle anyway. Unfortunately, I think Mark’s right and this is gonna be a rollercoaster with thrilling highs, devastating lows and a few loops in between…

And stomps – I think every Packer fan would welcome a third meeting with Favre in the playoffs!

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

Every Packers’ fan is dying for a third shot at Favre. In Stomps’ mind I guess the Packers should have mailed it in today, they had no shot of winning…

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

How about we worry about the 49ers first? Geez!

  • jonnyfootballhero

I agree Al, the 49ers aern’t going to be a cakewalk… I know the Packers have enough talent to beat them, but will MM have the right gameplan and will today’s defense show up to get it done?

  • Steve Cheez

Mark Troy- I should have asked the vet to save my dog’s when he got fixed, you never know when we’ll need ‘em for another tough game. Oh well, now we’re 5-4 and I can hit a high C.

  • Dan

Great game today. It’s amazing what happens when MM calls a West Coast offense instead of drop back and chuck. Maybe just maybe he’s learning.

    Defense played great.

If they keep playing smart instead of playing for highlights, this team has a legit shot at the playoffs.

  • Sammy

You do not want anymore of the Minnesota Brett Favres. One win and ya’ll think we are a good team. Looks like the 80′s when we beat the Redskins 49-48 on Monday Night Football in front of God and everyone…..The Skins went on to win the Superbowl…..get real people!!!!

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

    OK Sammy. Do you swallow?

  • jonnyfootballhero

Sammy – I’m as critical of this season’s Packers team as anyone else on this board, but come on man, todays game was fun to watch. At least the Defense was. Doesn’t that give you a little hope that this team could do something special? I know I had written them off after last weekends game, but the Cowboys at least have a winning record. I thought it was great to see Romo leave the field without that stupid smile on his face.

  • Steve Cheez

    Actually, it was 48-47…

  • Mel e Mel

Well beating the Cowboys is the gift that keeps on giving, but the Packers can no longer be counted on to deliver so every game. The penalties are worrisome but they are better than sacks. If you must hold DWare then by all means do it. Woodson is the best Packers player on D since Reggie.

  • Jeremy (from Chicago)

    How bout dem Cowboys?

That was AWESOME. This was by far the best the team has played in a long while. If the defense plays with that intensity and urgency (and calling more creative blitzes) we could be in this thing at the end of the season and beat that f’n trader Brett (I used to be a humble good ol boy but now am a stat hungry ((because Peyton will break all my records)) unloyal asshole) Favre.

Sorry got WAAAAY ahead of myslef there and also vented a little

Bring on the Niners!!! I can’t wait

“If the Packers didn’t want me to play for them anymore or wanted to move on I would just retire. I couldn’t imaging playing anywhere else.” – Brett Favre
    FU Brett Favre!!
Sorry again. I don’t know where all this is coming from.

    How bout dem Cowboys?

    GO PACK GO!!!

  • jonnyfootballhero

LT, pb, Rocky – where the heck are you guys?? I was really hoping to hear your thoughts after the game, especially after a win. As of right now, I’m as excited about this team as I was during the pre-season. I really hope that this is the defense that comes to play for the rest of the season!! I just hope I’m not setting myself up for a letdown…GO PACK!!

  • Jay

I have logged in to say that I was totally wrong about this game. In fact, the vastness of my wrongness is staggering.

I gave the Packers no chance in this game – no chance at all. I live in Texas and watched the game with all Cowboy fans. I joked before the game that Dallas would win 49-2, and the only reason the Packers would have 2 points is because the refs would feel sorry for Green Bay and award them a safety. Wow was I wrong.

I enjoyed this win very much and I will enjoy it all week. The Cowboy fans I watched the game with, who were giving me the business before the game and in the first half, were speechless and in shock following the game.

So, what did we learn about our beloved 5-4 Packers after this game:
    1) The running game is not too bad (this is an area that I also was wrong about). McCarthy finally stuck with running the football and it paid off.
    2) Whoever McCarthy has up in the booth telling him to challenge a play must be fired immediately. You have got to be kidding me. And since when does a team get 3 challenges? Idiots!
    3) Charles Woodson is a stud.
    4) Clay Matthews is a future stud.
    5) The defense won this game for the Packers.
    6) The offensive line did everything, including hold, to try and keep Rodgers upright. This O-Line might be one of the worse in the NFL.
    7) I will give McCarthy credit for this – the Packers won the game. We all know that he is fighting for his job.
    8) Even with all of their imperfections, the Packers are still in the hunt for a Wild Card spot. If the O-Line can improve, who knows. What I thought was a impossibility before this game can still be reached.

The upcoming 49ers game is huge. If the Packers win that game, they will be sitting at 6-4 and in the hunt.

I never thought I would see the Packers win today’s game after what I witnessed in Tampa Bay last week. But, that is why you play the games.

I said that I would post when I am wrong, and I was definitely wrong about this game today. Go Pack Go!

“What the hell is going on out there?” Vince Lombardi

  • Larry

Don’t forget Cullen Jenkins…this guy is a beast and set the tempo early.

  • packer_bob

Good morning all! Was in Wisconsin the past couple of days visiting my father, but I did get to watch the game.

For those clamoring for Rocky: His abscence is due to the fact that everything he’s been saying for the last year and a half has blown up on him. This victory may bring him back, but I suspect it will take us on a streak or Favre having his arm fall off mid pass to get Rocky to return.

What a win, huh? Fantastic! Several of us said we wanted to see some intensity and did we ever, at least from the defense.

I didn’t have much hope heading into the game but if they’re going to play like that they should hold meetings and cuss each other out every week!

Loved the physicality, especially of the defense. That’s kind of how I expected we were going to look all the time after I got psyched up during pre season. What can you say about Woodson, what a baller! Say what you will about TT, but what a pick up that guy has been. He sure isn’t showing any signs of decline.

We had some problems: sacks, penalties, O out of synch. But the D saved our bacon in a must win game at home. If the D can maintain that level of intensity and our O can perform more up to expectations (if you’d have told me before the game we were going to score 17 points, I’d have bet we lose) I have some hope we can put together a win streak. We sure need to.

Wasn’t it fun to see fallen Cowboys scattered about Lambeau on what seemed like every other play? Whether we go on a streak or not,we’ve proven we can beat a good team and it’s nice to have that bad taste from Tampa out of my mouth.

I’m going to watch the game on NFL rewind and will have a more detailed breakdown of the game later. For now its “GO PACK GO, WE NEED TO GET ON A ROLL!”

Rather than just another game in another adjustment season, the 49er game looms much larger, because we’re one slot out of the playoff hunt. Don’t like to post during, or immediately after a game because I like to get presser concensus and stats first.
Just like so many of our games, the comments during the game on this blog are emotional reactions and do not take into account the fact that people make mistakes as opposed to the people being the mistake in the first place. Case in point being Lang. Totally out of place, put there in desparation, is Lang at LOT; he had a much better game at ROT and against a pretty good LB in Ware. The fact is that both Barbre and Lang are OGs by nature, and if not for injuries Clifton and Tauscher would still be the OT starters. Naturally, the blame for no adequate backup at OT is on TT.

  • AATP

Living in Texas, this was a great win… I get bragging rights for the rest of this season. Interesting listening to the radio shows here in Dallas this morning. Sounds much like what I read here on the forums – doomsday is upon the Cowboys. They got beat, plain and simple by a team that, according to the local radios, was so much maligned that they had no chance and that the Cowboys could look on to their next game against the Redskins. It’s fun to see the Cowboys fans in such a disarray and the Packers fans happily shocked. But us fans that live in Texas will enjoy this win till the off season.

    GO PACKERS!!! Bears Still Suck!!!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Read the in game comments and then the stats.
We led the entire game. McCarthy seems to have made one big adjustment in that it was commented in the press that he gave more game mgmt and line coverage assignments to Arod. The D seemed to come to play and were not going to be denied, hence good coverage and 5 sacks. STs also decided to listen to the coaches. The D won this game, no question, and Brad Jones played very well.
The “new” O didn’t throw as many bombs, but did run the ball more and had that 80yd drive in the 4th. No mention in the during game blogs either was that we converted 7of15 3rds and DAL had 3of12. Anyway, I have learned years ago, not to get so worked up during the game. Not good for the BP, that jumping off the couch stuff.

  • PackerPete

well, this is certainly a step in the right direction.

the players decided to play with emotion and intensity FOR 60 MINUTES!

there have been stretches where this team looked like this (good if not dominant) and then they seemed to disappear. Today the intensity needed to compete with quality opponents in the NFL was there for 60 and look at the results.

Jolly and Jenkins are the keys to this D’s performance, when they are disruptive good things happen like:
    1) rush lanes for Matthews, Barnett and Woodson et al
    2) no running room for opponent RB
    3) pocket collapses and batted passes
    4) off the field on 3rd down

this commitment to the run should have happened after the Cincy game. The sacks in that game underscored a deficiency which could have been righted by running more and more until our OL got some confidence in firing out and mauling some DL gaining a physical advantage and psychological edge = confidence. continuously putting players in position to struggle in an area of weakness simply destroys confidence and leads to more difficulties instead of growth and improved performance.

I still think that TT should make MM give up play calling, demote Philbin to OL, fire Campen and Fontenot AND HIRE JEFF JAGODZINSKI AS OC WITH PLAY CALLING DUTIES RIGHT NOW!

  • oddball

Ok – Pontificating though I have been, I clearly and now officially know exactly dick about the sport of football. Time to just sit back and enjoy the ride.

  • Reid

A HUGE step forward. Now, let’s stay there and see if we can take another step forward.

  • Reid

A HUGE step forward. Now, let’s stay there and see if we can take another step forward.

  • Mike from Arizona

Excellent Game, a joy to watch. The defense played their best game Woodson, Barnett, Matthews, Jenkins, Collins all had great games. Brad Jones had seven tackles in his first start. Havner continues to be special – 4 special teams tackles and a touchdown. Offensive Line still needs a lot of work. Rodgers was sound, no mistakes. Grant did O.K.

MM should find someone to do the play calling. He needs to management the game better. Crosby should not be kicking 50 plus yard FG.

All and all is much needed win. Bring on the 49ers.
