Packer-Lions Game Blog

11:40 AM:  Well folks, McCarthy didn’t get the boys ready to play today. This is going to be ugly, but don’t let it ruin your Thanksgiving.

11:47 AM:  No matter what happens today or the rest of the season, McCarthy has to fired. To still be making the same stupid penalties this late in the year is just flat-out poor coaching. The Packers will never return to the prominence with this nincompoop in charge.

11:57 AM:   No surprise there, we need to get inside the five for Mason Crosby to be in field goal range. And we thought we were embarrassed in Tampa.

12:04 PM:  Nick Collins saves a reeling defense. Now we can’t stop the Lions?! Need a big play on offense now. Take a shot deep.

12:11 PM:  The Packers made them pay for the Stafford interception and we are tied. Now the defense needs put the clamps on the young QB.

12:17 PM: Why can’t we stop the run now? Thank God for a drop because Bush got burned again.

12:19 PM:  That is simply unbelievable! Another special teams penalty! How does Shawn Slocum show his face at 1265 Lombardi Ave? Jordy was an idiot for catching it too. This kind of stuff will be too much to overcome today I think.

12:33 PM:  Might be in FG range at the 3.

12:34 PM:  Miracles never cease. 10-7 Packers. Come on defense. Three-and-out!

12:37 PM:  This is just simply unbelievable! This is even bad by Packers’ standards. What would Lombardi do? I guarantee it wouldn’t be pretty.

12:39 PM:  Another gift from Stafford. Sweet. Make it count now.

12:51 PM:  Why can’t we score TDs all of a sudden? This is getting to be a real problem. I chalked it up to a good Dallas defense two weeks ago. Against the 49ers it was masked a little because we led by 20 late in the game, but now its three games in a row. Big problem.

12:55 PM:  Well we don’t miss Al Harris in one department.

1:01 PM:  This game is much closer than it should be and the Lions get the ball to start the second half. I suggest we just kick it out of bounds as fast as possible so we don’t have time to make a penalty. If we kick it deep it will be a 20 yard return and a 15-yard penalty, which will be at least the 40 anyway.

The Packers should be up 21-7, though, so they have kept the Lions in the game. Any slip up like they had last week in the second half and they lose this game.

1:30 PM:  The Packers get a big play but go four-and-out. The fourth down play is what happens when you can’t kick a field goal. It’s official, McCarthy has lost faith in Crosby. Too bad it took so long.

1:43 PM:  That is more like it! What a pass! I thought it was picked off at first. 20-7. A little breathing room, but not much. Need another one real quick to take the air out of them.

2:06 PM:  Damn! We could have scored there and taken Rodgers out. Now we asking a lot of the defense again. But I guess it is their job.

2:09 PM:  Here we go again…

2:16 PM:  It’s going to be a TD, unbelievable. Throwing the ball all over the field and we run twice. You get what you deserve with that kind of play calling. The offense is going to have to make up for it now.

2:38 PM:  Finally, the dagger! How sweet the next ten days will be riding a three-game winning streak and sitting at 7-4. What can you say about the old guys on the Packers’ roster – Donald Driver and Charles Woodson? Incredible stuff today. Not to mention Aaron Rodgers, who just keeps rolling. The guy has basically played only two really bad games for the Packers has a starter and both were in Tampa Bay. Go figure?

Hi all from sunny Mesa, Az. Know what – it didn’t look that good from here either? Kicked their loving butts, but it sure wasn’t pretty. It seems like a penalty on every ST opportunity regardless of whether we’re kicking or receiving, kickoffs or punts. Unbelievable. I’ve had enough; McCarthy is neither a motivator nor technically qualified to be a NFL HC – a big mistake for TT and he had better correct it. If we make the playoffs it’ll be because of the effort of the individual team members and not the coaching staff. It might surprise you, but I lay it all on MM and not the assistants, because I have to feel that they are being overridden by the HC. Has to be a guess on my part but all three on the sidelines cannot be making the same mistakes. No way. Sad part is making the playoffs would save MMs job. For my money 9-7 w/o a playoff spot doesn’t make it with this schedule………..!

  • SN

A little sloppy, but still a win.

    Woodson is ridiculous.

Crosby better be in the hot seat. Missed a 40 yard and almost a 20 yard field goal. When the Packers went for it with 4th and 2, it had to partly be due to Crosby’s problems.

  • roy jamison

Kudos to Stafford and Johnson for giving it a go as hurt as they were. Thumbs down on our unspecial teams play. Golden turkey awards to A-Rod, DD, and 21. Woodson is the best damn football player on the team and maybe in the league.

  • roy jamison

Sorry to see Clifton get hurt again, but hopefully he’ll be back after the break. Lang did a solid job in his place. Nice to see solid blocking from the offensive line today!

  • http://http.jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

I think Bush played a better game than you’re suggesting, guys. On two, at least, of those completions he was an inch away from an int or knockdown and he should have had an int on the one he dropped. Its a game of inches and he could have looked a lot better if he had reacted a split second sooner. I didn’t think he played that badly given the amount of playing time he has had. Same goes for Williams. I’m surprised in the down field lack of speed of the ST guys. Thought this would be an area of great improvement this year – obviously hasn’t happened.

  • Steve Cheez

So Bush is OK because he almost makes plays?

  • Steve Cheez

With as questionable as some of TT’s moves (and non-moves) have been, he sure did hit the jackpot with C-Wood. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one that thought he was washed up when we signed him. But it seems like he just keeps getting better and better. And what the f**k is MM thinking, putting him back there on KO return? Seriously dude.

  • Steve Cheez

At the same time, props to MM for going for the kill on the fumble challenge.

  • Steve Cheez

Question to the schedule-makers: why do we follow up a Thursday game with waiting until Monday night next week?

  • Larry

Bush with TWO pick and a forced fumble what a player…oops…that was Woodson…my bad!! Enjoy the weekend all!!

  • Steve Cheez

List of things I thought I would never see in my life:
    1. Somebody confusing Bush for Woodson
    2. Sorry, nothing else comes close to that one…

  • Jack in Columbus

For all the good and bad that has happened this season, I am really pumped up now. Three solid wins in a row despite all of our shortcomings. We might not finish 12-4, but the fact that we actually could after Game 11 is encouraging.

  • Mel e Mel

MM is not qualified to coach in the league. Is there a law that Havner and Finley cant be on the field on the same time? I am guessing that maybe he is saving things for Baltimore?

  • Lacey

Just want to chime and let you all know that you sound absolutely ridiculous.

McCarthy not qualified to coach in the league? Lol. Just lol. He took you morons to the NFC championship game in his second year. He had one slump year with a huge QB transition and enormous injuries on defense in which the packers were 3 TDs in scoring away from being a 13-3 team. And now he has his team on the cusp of clinching another playoff berth. Top 5 defense, top 10 offense, both trending upwards… you guys sound so ridiculous, I’m literally loling, right here, in my seat. Thanks for the laugh!

Just wow. Stick to what you know. That is, anything but football.

  • Dan

Capers deserves to be offered a head coaching job based on the success the Packers D has had this year. I hope someone in GB realizes the success of this team has more to do with Capers and his staff than it does with MM.

  • zach

Hmm, I don’t know about that Dan. He has had one winning season out of eight as head coach. I think he needs to stick with what he knows….defenses.

  • Dan

Zach, the problem with that stat is that he took over 2 expansion teams. The stint with Houston was guaranteed to flop. After the Panther and Jaguars succeeded early on, the league made sure to change the rules when Houston came into the league. No existing owner wants to see an expansion team win for years.

The Bears fans at work were talking Wednesday that they would rather have Capers than Lovie. If Bears fans can figure out that Capers is the best we have, I’m guessing there’s real football minds that can figure that out as well.

  • Mel e Mel

Well Fire Mcarthy now and get Winston Moss. What kind of man wears a jacket indoors. Someone who has insecurity about his jelly belly.

  • http://http.jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Harp on Bush all you want, we’ll see in the end who has egg on their face. All I’m saying is I saw something in both Bush and Williams I hadn’t seen before. And you’re right I give B credit for missing by inches because its aggressive, which I like, and it is a game of inches. They’ll even out in the long run. Yeah, you’re right about Woodson too, I was among them who thought he was washed up in Oakland. So, I’m giving the kid a chance. Capers is not HC material; has been there done that, situation here w/ our kids would be the same as he faced in HOU. Same thing ya’all (me too) are criticizing MM for, a detail guy who cannot manage the big overall scope of things. The HOU and NO experience are typical of the high draft history based on losing records over time. Thats the way the system is designed.

  • http://http.jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Mel e Mel, perhaps Finley and Havner are not on the field at the same time is because Lee is the #1 TE, ya think?

  • oddball

I’m happy things went well for our DBs, but let’s be honest about it. Rookie QB, injured, merely adequate O-line in front of him, only one real wideout on the team, best TE out early to a knee injury. I’m not going to get too effusive just yet, but somebody must be seeing something in Bush that we’re not. Here’s hopin’ the kid proves to be a late bloomer.

I was also dubious about Charles coming – dead-ass, roasting on a spit wrong on that count, so take that as you like it with regard to my DB knowledge. Doubs remain about the coaching, O-line and ST. After reading Poppinga’s comments about his ST penalty, I want to stuff a sock down his throat.

But no matter what else we have to say, here we are 7-4. I don’t think we’re elite yet, but you’d better bring your “A” game if you’re coming to Lambeau Field, and that’s a step in the right direction. Can’t wait for MNF.

  • oddball

    Point of order –

7 sacks against in the last three games. Somebody has to be doing something right in comparison to the first half of the year.

  • roy jamison

On MM, remember he has a long term contract and you’ll be seeing him for another 2 or 3 years minimum no matter if you like him or not. Also remember Tom Coughlin was an idiot when the Giants couldn’t win, a genius when Eli had a wideout to throw to and they won the Super Bowl, and now he’s gravitating back toward being a moron again.
But my real question is why Mike Golic is such an anti Packer guy? Didn’t pick them to get in playoffs and a couple of days ago picked the Lions to win. I’m thinking only Frank Caliendo and Golic made that pick.

  • packer_bob

Bottom line for me is we had a dominant home victory over the Cowboys, a should have been dominat victory over the 49ers if we hadn’t sat on our hands the 2nd half, and a dominant win over the Lions. That to me is progress.

I don’t think we’re dominant, but if we can continue to improve we may end up peaking at the right time. We have some tougher opponents coming up, so the proof will be in the pudding. I think I’m starting to see the things that will translate into success over the upcoming weeks—better pass protection, stronger running attack, more agressive defense, etc.

The injuries are the wild card, but I’ll say it again: I am more optimistic about the state of our team than I have been since the preseason. Now if they’d just cover a damn bet for me…..

  • iccyfan

LarryTex Says: “I think Bush played a better game than you’re suggesting, guys. On two, at least, of those completions he was an inch away from an int or knockdown and he should have had an int on the one he dropped. Its a game of inches and he could have looked a lot better if he had reacted a split second sooner. I didn’t think he played that badly”

I submit that you must have been watching a different game than I. I saw an easy interception dropped that any competent NFL defensive back would have had, followed immediately by a lucky missed FG (Jason Hanson usually gets those). I saw him break under on a pass that easily went over him for a first down. I wasn’t taking notes, but I’m pretty certain his only successful “pass defended” was his dropped interception.

We were playing the Lions, a team that didn’t win a game last year, features a rookie QB and had to get lucky to beat the Cleveland Browns the week prior. If Jarrett Bush can’t make plays against the Lions, what’s he gonna look like versus better teams (that’d be everybody else remaining on our schedule)? I’m hoping the newly acquired free agent CB will be ready in time for the Monday nighter…

  • packer_bob

Pretty much sums up my feelings about Bush, Iccy. I’m desperately afraid of what he will look like when we play someone other than the Lions.

  • http://http.jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

All I’m saying is you’re selling him short because he has a lack of experience at game speed. As he moves up the depth chart he will improve as he is on the cusp. I watched the same game you did and liked what I saw as far as coverage was concerned. Like I said “inches” and Bush could have had three INTs. Hey, I’ve seen Woodson and Harris get beat too, it happens – its called football. Do you like Bigby better, against MIN he took two of our DBs out on one play and the guy got a 40 yd gain?

  • http://http.jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

I honestly do not see us getting a wild card spot, but could happen. I will enjoy the rest of the year though because in the last few games I’ve seen a heck of an improvement in the “new” generation. Think about it; Matthews, Raji, Jones, Johnson, yes Bush, Williams, Lang, Finley, and Nelson, improving each game the rest of the year. Kinda setting us up for a fall next year like the pre did to us this. I think the “youngest team” will be no longer and they’ll be veterans next year.

  • roy jamison

I think we can get a wild card because, those eastern teams are gonna beat themselves up and the Giants aren’t that good. Philly might get the wild card but they really aren’t that consistent either. Not that Dallas is! The Giants needed that game in Denver.

  • http://http.jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Top six tacklers in DET game included Woodson and Barnett. The “kids” are learning. I would hope MM could keep up with them.

  • http://http.jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Good point, roy, gee weren’t the NYG a SB team a couple of years ago? Is that what the play, coach, win, FA, at any cost, now, crowd want us to do? Like Bearse and MIN? I’d rather have a winning team year after year with a chance to go all the way, than a go for broke one year run (that you just might not make it with) and have nothing two years later. Thats just what this franchise did leading up to the 70s and 80s debacle.

  • Mel e Mel

The Giants are experiencing life without Plaxico & their D is banged up.

  • ChrisAZ

Roy Jamison, Where did mike golic pick the lions to win? If it was on TV then it was all for show or just to be the devils advocate. On ESPN’s expert picks he picked the packers to win.

  • packer_bob

    LT,

It’s not win now at ANY cost. I don’t think anybody is advocating throwing money around like Daniel Snyder.

The Bears scenario has yet to play out, talk to me about the Cutler move in a couple of years. And the Vikes aren’t looking too bad at the moment.

Just for the point of argument, let’s say we get into the playoffs as a wild card, then lose. The question at that point would be did we do everything in our power to field the best possible team that we absolutely could have? If the answer to that is no, then then the next question is, why?

The Giants gambled big time on Eli Manning, and Plaxico Burress for that matter, and all it did was win them a championship. No balls, no babies my friend. And whatever ails them now, you can’t take that away from them.

All they did was go on the road to beat Dallas, beat us in our house, then knock off the undefeated Patriots in the big one. The fact that they’re failing now seems immaterial, and completely misses the point.

And by the way, winning now versus building for the future aren’t mutually exclusive concepts. We have a good young nucleus, would it have crippled us to pick up some veteran players over the last couple of years? I don’t think so, especially since we are way under the salary cap.

At the end of this season, I am desperately afraid that we are going to come up just a little bit short, and I’m going to be wondering “WHY?” again. There is a middle ground in this debate, and it falls somewhere between Daniel Snyder’s approach and TT’s.

  • Mike from Arizona

    As for Talent going forward:

    New Kicker
    New Punter
    DB Depth
    One New Safety plus Depth
Two to Three New O-lineman plus depth
    RB Depth

Let’s hope TT is focused on this going forward.

  • Mel e Mel

Just our Luck according Pro Football weekly this years OT crop is pretty thin. Free Agents anyone

  • packer_bob

Has anybody seen Brett Favre lately? Is he still playing?

All washed up, just ask the Bears!

I was actually trying to root for a Bears victory (hard as that is) but the inevitability of the situation was obvious by the 2nd quarter. I’m very happy with Rodgers, and our long term prospects are better with him than Favre, unless Favre is still playing when he’s 50.

But Favre is simply imcomparable. He’s got a hell of a cast around him, but for a guy to be 40 years old and play the way he is, is completely unprecedented. Obviously if we are fortunate enough to face them again, I’ll be rooting for the Pack. But barring that, it wouldn’t bother me if the Vikes won the whole shebang.

    Discuss.

  • iccyfan

I was a rock-solid Ted Thompson supporter in the past, but the twenty-foot thick stone walls around my keep have been undermined. For the first couple years, I liked that he was building thru the draft, fielding a young squad and fiscally responsible.

This year has magnified his errors, with the “new” offensive line members simply unprepared to take over. Other than Rodgers & Collins, none of his high (first & second rounders) draft picks are showing signs of excellence, with several flat-out busts (Brohm, Harrell, Lee). He hasn’t used the extra cap money to go and address areas of need (Jason Peter, for instance) and we’re seeing the results now. We have the added distraction of watching the hated Vikings do well with their army of acquired mercenaries…

I’m not an auto-sports fan but will use the analogy anyway; we’re racing in the Indy Car series and Ted’s chosen to stock our garage with twenty Hyundai engines rather than two Mercedes-Benz high performance units. We’ll be out on the track every week, but our chances of winning a race are slim…

  • Dan

I’m feeling good about facing the Ravens. They played at home against a beat up Steelers team that was using their 3rd string QB. Roethlisberger (emergency QB and Batch was out). Also, Polamalu was out.

Even the Bears beat the Steelers when they were healthier than that.

Unless we turn the ball over and have ST breakdowns, we should beat the Ravens in Lambeau.
Also, feeling good about playing the Bears. They are not a good team these days.
Seahags give us three very winnable game.
Cardinals likely having nothing to play for during the last game (and very likely would face the Packers in the first playoff game, so they will rest guys and play vanilla football).

Looking like we should finish 11-5. Injuries could change things, but considering we’re a lot healthier than other teams, I like our chances. Once the playoffs start, anything can happen.

  • packer_bob

    Dan,

I hope you’re right but am feeling you are a tad too bit optimistic. I don’t think anyone on our remaining schedule is a sure loss, but by the same token we’ve already proven we can lose to anybody.

If we can milk 3 more wins from this season, I’ll take them.

  • AATP

Sorry there p_b, I don’t share your sentiment about the Viqueens taking it all… I’d rather see the Saints go all the way if it’s not my beloved franchise… I don’t think the Queens and the Saints see each other during the regular season so it would be awfully fun to see them butt heads in the play-offs if we don’t get another crack at them. I’m think the SB will see the Saints and the Colts personally cause the Queens, Cowgirls and Cards don’t have what the Saints have and that’s character… Well, the Cards have character but not enough talent to beat the likes of the Queens or Saints IMHO. So if the Packers aren’t there in the end I’d rather a team from another NFC division were the lucky recipient of the SB.

For me, this week will be litmus test for the Saints playing the Pats and again when they play the Cowboys. For the Viqueens it will be when they play the Bengals. I don’t think AZ is in the same league as the Queens or the Saints even with their record of 7-4. Then again, I don’t think we’re in the same league with the top two teams either but once again, I’d rather see the Saints then the Queens if it can’t be the Packers.

  • Oddball

If it’s not the Packers, I really don’t care. I honestly haven’t even watched a Super Bowl since our loss. Favre remains one of my favorite football players, so if the Vikes get there, I’ll watch and hope he does well. Still can’t bring myself to actively pull for the Queens.

  • iccyfan

There is no scenario where I could ever see myself cheering for the Vikings to win the Superbowl – NONE!!!

  • packer_bob

Vikings vs Patriots, and you’re rooting for the Patriots, then?

  • roy jamison

The Vikings oughta be flying high right now. But, I get the sneaky suspicion that they will have a tough time in the playoffs. I don’t know if anyone is as good as the Saints have been. Some times teams peak too early and have nothing left in game 17.

  • iccyfan

If Stalin, Hitler, Mao Zedong, Emperor Hirohito, Attila the Hun and Vlad the Impaler put together an NFL franchise, I’d root for them to defeat the Vikings.

  • JeffN

Whatever team get’s on a hot streak in the play offs is the one that goes to the super bowl. Everyone’s record resets when the play off start I don’t care about who is seeded where. The Giants and Cardinals didn’t have first round bye’s.

I’m not to impressed with our Packers this year. However we have been playing better and the pass rush is maturing in this new defense (usually is the last thing to mature) and the the offensive line seems to be getting better with better running game. Our special teams still suck but it’s all about who get’s on a hot streak in the play off.

I don’t think the team with the best regular season record has won the SB in the last 5 or 6 years.

Oh and I do like our chances against the Ravens this week.

  • Reid

iccyfan says: “Other than Rodgers & Collins, none of his high (first & second rounders) draft picks are showing signs of excellence, with several flat-out busts (Brohm, Harrell, Lee).”

Iccy – I don’t ever recall disagreeing with you and I’m probably not here either, but, hello??? Greg Jennings??? now Clay Mathews, BJ Raji, and Jermichael Finley are looking pretty good too.

Wouldn’t discount the contributions of James Jones, Jordy Nelson, Ryan Grant (I know, not a draft pick, but still a Hyundai engine), free agents Pickett and Woodson…

  • Reid

JeffN – I totally agree on your “special teams suck” comment. We can’t punt, kick field goals, cover kick-offs, block for the punter, cover punts. For you stat lovers, our defense has given up the least yards, that’s #1 in the NFL in yards against average. BUT, we are 12th in points allowed, I think that says something about FIELD POSITION, which is determined by special teams, uh, and penalties – the other problem.

  • iccyfan

Reid – Agreed that we’re generally of like mind and I’ll admit I forgot Greg Jennings, but frankly he’s had a forgettable season thus far. Thru 11 games, he’s only had three of >100 yards and he’s only averaging 65 yards / contest. He has three TD’s total. Those are not the numbers of a dominant #1 receiver. I know Rodgers is spreading the ball around, but for the $ he’s making GJ needs to stand out from the crowd! As for the others you listed, I “like” all those guys but there’s not a snazzy sports car in the bunch.

Maybe I was a little harsh with the Hyundai comparison, but the only Ferrari in our garage is Woodson!
