Packers make a statement

Wow! I think you can call the Green Bay Packers’ defense the real thing. I also think we are seeing the continuing maturation of Aaron Rodgers who just keeps getting better and better with each game. Being at the game tonight and from my damn near field level seats next to the Packers’ tunnel I see the faces of the players and the mannerisms up close and Rodgers amazed me today.

Rodgers was calm, cool and collected at all times, you couldn’t tell if the play was a 40-yard gain or a 15-yard penalty against the offense. I’d like to say it was a coming out party but Rodgers has been lights out since he took over the starting job. The numbers he is putting up are Peyton Manning-like and he is now starting to get that same respect level in the locker room. This is Aaron Rodgers’ team and tonight he proved beyond a doubt he is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL

Does anybody want to question Dom Capers anymore? Twelve games into his tenure in Green Bay and the Packers have the best defense in the NFL. Oh, and ah, they are still getting better. A.J. Hawk has found his system and rookies Clay Matthews and B.J. Raji are playing well beyond their years. All of a sudden the Packers’ defense is complementing the explosive offense and the Packers appear to be playoff bound.

A trip to Chicago next week presents another must win game because the Bears are, well, they Bears are who we thought they were – they suck. A loss in Chicago would be akin to a loss to Tampa Bay. It would be a season killer.

I’ll have more to say as I sober up, but damn, what a great day to be a Packers’ fan!

  • Jeff

I watched the whole Bear game Sunday and they are pathetic ! The Rams had a chance to tie them on the final drive.
The Rams stated their first 4 possesions at or near midfield and only the Rams being a horrible team prevented them from having a 17 point lead on the Bears.
Now before you say that we have lost the last 2 years in Chicago, remember this,,,
In 2007 there were 50 MPH winds in Chicago and Favre defeated his own team in pre game warmups by saying he would be lucky to complete 5 passes in that wind.
Last year the Packers had a 14-3 halftime lead and stooped the Bears on their opening posession in the second half and were about to blow the Bears out but Jarret Bush could not get out of the way of a Bear punt and in spite of that the Packers would have won if Crosby would have done his job.
The only way the Bears stay in this game is if the Packers turn the ball over 4 times.
The Packer defense was blowing leads last year when they went into Chicago , the Bears will be facing a much better Packer defense this year.
The Packers must try to take a 14-0 first quarter lead in Chicago because if they do the Bear fans willl trun on their team fast.
The Bears cover 2 defnse with no Urlacher and maybe no Briggs will not be able to stop out tight ends in the middle of the field.
The Packers were 2-0 against the Ravens and Ray Lewis going into this game , the Packers are 2-0 against Jay Cutler amd he has only put one touchdown on the board against us in each game.
The Packer defense whipped a very good Raven offensive line , they will destoy the Bears’ offensive line..
The Bears have packed their bags 5 weeks ago . Also, Cutler and Hester may have injuries coming out of the Ram game.
The Packers all of a sudden could be one game out of first place next week , the Vikings are playing a very tough Bengal team. If the Vikings do not put the division away this coming week , it could be a fight to the finish.

  • Abraham25

A win, but not against a great team. I want this to continue through the last five games.

I see the Vikes dropping 3 of thier next 4. If we clean our plate we may win the division. You think, wishful thinking just watch the next four weeks.

The Favre factor (cracks under pressure), losing EJ Henderson for the season, being overrated, believing the hipe all leads to losses.

If we are as good as we all know we can be watch out we will be in the NFC Championship.

  • simon

if it was not for them 2 turnover’s in the 3rd quarter we woud have blown them out.

what was great is that to start the 4th quarter, the game was on the line and the packers got the job done.

    roll on sunday

  • Larry

The talent is there but if this were against Arizona and not Baltimore the outcome would be different. Picking up Green and Taucher really has helped this team. Kudos to TT.

  • iccyfan

I’m thrilled to death the Packers came out with a victory and kept pace with the Eagles for a wild-card berth. I believe the Packers will make the playoffs and as we’ve seen recently, anything can transpire at that point! On the flip side (and I don’t know this for a fact), I doubt a team which led the NFL in penalties has ever won the Superbowl (maybe the old Raiders). Playing aggressive is not an excuse for committing egregious numbers of penalties and that will be our undoing if they can’t get it under control. JMHO

Preface to this next section: I do not like Jarrett Bush. Possibly that leads me to notice only his bad plays while not seeing his successes; I really don’t know. But here are my top three Jarrett Bush lowlights from last night: 1) Kapinos punt is thrown back by gunner, only to hit the trailing Jarrett Bush and go into the endzone for a touchback; 2) Jarrett Bush beaten badly by Kelley Washington for Ravens first TD; 3) Jarrett Bush trailing Raven’s #21 on KO return as Tramon tackles him to save the TD. He’s a far-below-average nickelback and he’s not the special teams demon he’s been advertised to be! I becoming convinced he’s Bhawoh Jue in disguise, back to torment us some more…

  • Pete H

It was good at times, great at times, and very mediocre at times. They have certainly solidified themselves as legitimate playoff contenders, but I don’t think they are going to scare the big dogs just yet.

  • Scot

Special teams’ guys just need to learn to stay in their lanes to prevent these big runbacks from happening. Shawn Slocum should be fired at the end of the year, and so should Campen. J. Bush needs to be demoted. I’ve never been sold on the guy. Surely Martin, Ford or Goridani can do the job better. If it weren’t for the one freak Driver play, and Driver’s drop, the Ravens offense would’ve been non-existent last night. I felt bad for Driver on those. He’s such a competitor. It’s hard to get mad at the guy. The second interception was more Rodgers’ fault anyway for throwing it so low. Other than that, the defense looks phenom!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Yeah, those damned STs. They allowed a 6yd runback on the only punt, and then allowed an average of 16yds on the KO returns other than the 68 yarder. Terrible, what did they do with Crosby that he cant reach the endzone anymore? All those penalties agains Bush last night – he almost made us lose the game. Scot is probably right, those two safeties or a rookie would do the better job. Right, too, about Campen – his guys allowed another sack, damn, I think thats about 3 in the last 4 games now. Why were’nt these guys on the OL all season? 6 drops, but give your emotional favorites a pass, Favre would never have made such a low throw. (Right, he’d throw into 4-coverage, like he did twice Sunday). 27-14 won’t change.

  • monkeon

Bringing Tauscher back was huge. I love having Green back as well. They have been playing good football since the loss to Tampa.

  • Randy

A pretty loud statement I might add. My insider, Superpharmacist Ron, tells me book tickets for the NFC Championship game in Minneapolis, whereby the Pack will win the most important of the three games against Brent Favre. THE PACK IS BACK, BABY!

  • Larry

A bad QB day in the NFL is about 55% completions, which is probably about 18. Those 18 go against someone …this is the way the rules are set up. Sometimes linebackers, safeties and corners. Not everyone sucks just because they give up a completion…and in the prevent/zone defense the goal is to give up the middle stuff and short stuff. To say Bush is bad because a catch is made is crazy. If anything Tramon Williams should be villified for his umteen penalties.

Bush has played 3 very good games in a row as the nickle…and no he’ll never be Charles Woodson…but he’s better than Ahman Carroll ever was!

  • Pete H

I beg to differ Larry. Jarred Bush doesn’t play often enough to have been responsible for as many crap plays as he is. He dropped an easy pick last week, gave up an awful TD against the Bucs, doesn’t ever make a “play”, but has made several unacceptable plays. He sucks. The simple fact that there is so much disdain for a guy who plays a sparing nickel position speaks for itself.

  • Scot

Larry, I agree that Williams also needs to be held accountable. He needs to quit hooking that arm around the receivers. Now refs are going to be zeroing in on that. Raji, Matthews and Jones all looked fantastic. Looks like this last draft may be one of the best ever for the Pack. I was worried about Raji injury earlier in the year. I don’t want another Harrell. Looks like it won’t be that case again. Raji is showing his true colors now, and made a few really nice plays last night. Matthews should be defensive rookie of the year, in my opinion.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Larry, Bush is an entry topic for the “get TT crowd”. Its easy pickings because the kid is all over the field and is on camera a lot. Unlike Carroll (an illegal contact penalty every time the ball was thrown his way) who was much more diciplined in coverage but could never use his speed to his advantage. Carroll couldn’t see the whole field whereas Bush is all over it. Same with Williams, able to cover all over. I think both will develop the cover skills of Harris, but maybe not the “anticipation” that Woodson has. Ford, unknown as yet. Lee, can’t tell because of the injury bug. My prediction is that Williams and Bush replace Woodson and Harris. I think we’re halfway there now.

  • iccyfan

This is fun. We used to argue about the #1 player on the roster (Favre) and now we’re arguing about my personal #45 player on the active gameday roster (Bush). I guess that means the team is making progress!

Larry – Bush has NOT played three good games in a row. He gave up a long completion to Dennis Freaking Northcutt of the Lions and was barely in the picture on Kelley Freaking Washington’s simple out pattern from the 12 yard line. It wasn’t zone, it wasn’t short and he didn’t keep it in front of him. We know every d-back will give up completions, but it’d be nice if Bush was even close enough to make a dive at the ball! If he can’t compete with the Sammie Slaughters, Dennis Northcutts and Kelley Washingtons of the world, what’s gonna happen when we play the Cardinals and he’s lined up on Fitzgerald, Boldin or Breaston? I hope Capers can keep the heat on with the pass rush or the likes of Kurt Warner will have a turkey shoot…

  • iccyfan

LarryTex Says: “Larry, Bush is an entry topic for the “get TT crowd”.”
    Wrong!

  • Bob

Besides injuries, the only thing that will hurt us in tough games is Crosby, He has no confidence, also I believe that MM still has to be let go along with special teams and o line coaches. This team has way to many penalty’s. If we were in the playoffs we wouldn’t recover from that many penalty’s. The defense right now is more fun to watch then the offense, good job to Dom Capers and his staff. However Al I can still question Capers on the Viking games, really bad game plan against them. the 2 teams that have beaten the Vikes have gotten to Favre, we didn’t! and we all know you put pressure on Brett and he will throw picks and fumble. also I’m just amazed with Charles Woodson, what a year he is having and I loved to see the piece on him during Thankgiving game, with him and the work he does with the Childrens hospital. He’s a real class guy!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Short, selective, memory iccy. In the DET game (his best so far) he was an eyelash from 3 INTs and dropped a fourth. He was a penalty magnet on Specials – corrected? He was all over his man last night. The only reason the TT clamor has died down somewhat is because of Woodson, Raji, Matthews, Finley, and maybe to some extent Jones, all coming thru as real pros.
We had a lot of fun watching TT bring in all those WRs (ie, Fab(5)6). What are we going to call the LB crew? Think about it; Hawk 4-25, Matthews R-23, Chillar 6-27, Bishop 3-25, Barnett 7-28, Obiozor R-23, Jones R-23, Poppinga 5-30, and Kampman 8-30. Can’t see much future for Pop and Kampy in that group but they seem to be doing for the D what the WRs did for the O. I think we’ll agree to dis-agree on Bush.
Time will prove out, one way or t’other.

  • iccyfan

I’ll have to question your memory LT; for the season (12 Games), JB has 14 tackles (11 solo), 0 Sacks, 0 Forced Fumbles, 0 Interceptions and 6 Passes Defended. He couldn’t have been an “eyelash” from four INT’s in the Detroit game if he was only credited with two passes defended; one of them of course was the INT he dropped. Do those sound like the statistics of a player who can “cover the whole field”? Has he made a single “impact” play (of the positive variety)?

In closing, time has already proven out; Bush won the nickel job coming out of camp in 2007, lost it immediately and was no higher than sixth on the CB depth chart in this year’s TC. He has ZERO interceptions for his career, which now includes 2.75 seasons! Ted loves versatility and special teams play, which is the only plausible explanation for JB’s presence on our roster. Of course it doesn’t matter if Bush can’t make plays at corner, safety or on special teams, unless you enjoy the sight of #24 trailing a play while somebody else tackles his responsibility….

  • iccyfan

Comment excerpts from the Baltimore Sun article on the game:

“Schizophrenic. Thats what this team and the coaching staff is. One day they look like contenders and the next day they look like roadkill. The players got beat but the real blame goes to the Coaching staff. Cam must call the oppossite of what every play calls for. Harbaugh is horrible with time mangement and has no feel for the game. His Mighty Men talk is lame and his team has lost faith in his rhetoric. Mattison has crapy players to use so I cant blame him too much, yet.

Posted by: Big Bob | December 8, 2009 8:14 AM

This is a bad football team from top to bottom; John Harbaugh has been very ineffective as a head coach, Cam Cameron’s play calling has been inept for weeks now, Gregg mattison still has his defense unprepered and out of position more times than not, and the players STINK! They are resembling the teams of Brian Billick without the intimidating defense, even if it did only show up when it felt like it!

    Posted by: MikeB | December 8, 2009 8:43 AM

Oh gee, its not the coaching, its not Flacco, its not the receivers, offensive line or the jokers who play in the secondary. I just knew if we just got rid of Huska we would make the playoffs. Brilliant Ozzie
    ==============================================================

Didn’t the Ravens make the AFC title game last year with Harbaugh as HC and Ozzie Newsome as GM? Same rhetoric – same criticisms – different fanbase… :)

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

He hasn’t played that much, iccy. Like I said, “time will tell”. He is just this year’s Bigby, thats all. I know why his stats are so low – the opposition is afraid of him, yeah, that it, afraid of him!

  • roy jamison

Let me throw the last flag of the game. This flag is on the ridiculous officiating. If you don’t let the players play the game and call stupid pass interference on both teams, it becomes a stinking circus. This flag is for at least 110 yards cleaning each and every one of the officials off the field.

  • iccyfan

Comment from the Star Tribune article on a possible third game between the Packers and vikings:

“Packers = Epic Failure against the Vikings
We beated them twice already, once at the dome and once at lambeau. They had no clue how to attack Favre and was lost like an little kid in a crowd. Especially at Lambeau Field, we whoop them butt the whole 1st half and shut them down. Only reasons it got kinda close was becuz the defense played softly. Another re-match would be nice and we will whoop them again. That’ll be great, sending them home and getting whoop three times by Favre. Now that’s PRICELESS!”

Seriously, we Packer fans may get after each other once in awhile, but nobody on the site approaches this level of idiocy (ok – paul did, but he’s been absent for awhile). ;)

  • Pack4life

Its Funny cause Ray Rice tore the Vikes a new one. When it gets cold the whole dynamic changes. Finley in the Redzone LOVELY!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

For two into three games now the D has been flying all over, but with purpose. I’m looking forward to a rematch because this is a different team than MIN faced before. And you are so right, Pack4, iccy and I might not agree on a given player, coach, or GM, but like you we are solidly behind the Pack and show respect to each other.
Besides, I can’t lose – if my guy doesn’t make it and is replaced it’ll be with a better player and for the betterment of the team. If he makes it, we all win.

  • packer_bob

It was definitely the tale of two teams again last night.

First the bad: The special teams bugaboo continues to rear it’s ugly head. The missed FG was inexcusable. We gave up another long kickoff return that could have been a game changer had Flacco not thrown that horrible pick (great for us, but terrible decision by him) to end that series. Ball security was a problem for the first time since the TB game—and we could have another fumble if Grant hadn’t just barely got his knee down on another. Penalties were extremely bad on both sides. I’m not trying to sound overly negative, as I’m happy with the win, but all of these things are fair criticisms of last night’s performance and are question marks for this team moving forward to (we all hope) the playoffs.

Now the good: I said going into this game that I wasn’t going to pooh-pooh a victory, and I’m not. This was a huge win against a team that while not perfect, has some considerable assets. We did an awesome job of containing Ray Rice. The defense looked like a top 5 group, and while I was skeptical of how good we really were no matter where we were ranked a month ago, performances like the one’s against Dallas and the one last night have made me believe we’ve turned a corner. We are getting valuable contributions from both Raji and Mathews, more than I would have hoped for at the beginning of the season. Hawk and Barnett are starting to make plays and the D-line as a whole looks reborn and revitalized the last few weeks.

The ability of Clifton and Tauscher to remain healthy enough to play has clearly stabilized our line. There is a night and day difference between our protection now vs a month ago, plus Rodger’s has clearly done a better job of getting the ball out early. Even though I don’t think the number’s were huge last night, I think I’m seeing a more physical run attack and like what Green may be able to do for us to help run out games the rest of the way.

I’ve been very hard on TT and at times MM, but I’ve said from the beginning that my threshold is 9-7 or better, and now I’m looking at the schedule thinking every game left is at least winnable! 10 or 11 wins is certainly achievable, maybe more, so I have to give credit where it is due. The team appears to be ascending, and as we all know, it is way better to get hot at the end of the season rather than the beginning.

I still think we lag behind the Vikes and the Saints in the NFC, but NO should have lost to the Skins and the Vikes took it on the chin pretty good Sunday night, so who knows? Maybe a Queen collapse isn’t completely out of the question! In any case, if we keep improving till the end of the year, we may be in position to make a run. Go Pack Go!

  • packer_bob

Of course, before we get too carried away, there’s this to consider, from ESPN:

“The Packers slugged to a historically sloppy 27-14 victory over Baltimore. How historic and how sloppy? According to ESPN Stats & Information, Monday night marked only the second time since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger that a team won with at least three turnovers and 175 penalty yards.”

Reason for concern, or reason to think we’re good enough to overcome those kind of problems and still win? I’m going to go glass half full, and say creating the kind of turnovers we can covers up a variety of sins.

  • Pete H

It can cover many sins, but not against the elite. The Vikes didn’t beat them, they beat themselves. The Saints will destroy them with that kind of crap, as will Arizona and probably Philly.

  • Jay

I guess it is time for me to eat some crow. This is what I posted on November 8th in Al’s “Packers-Bucs Game Blog” following the Packers 38-28 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

“I will say it now – THE 2009 SEASON IS OVER FOR THE GREEN BAY PACKERS. With the Cowboys up next Sunday and the Packers sitting at 4-4, it looks pretty bleak for the Packers to have any chance at the Playoffs. I have not been real high on this team this year, but at least I had them at 5-3 after today and in the mix for a chance at the playoffs. I knew that today’s game would be no gimme as I said in earlier posts and blogs, but after today, I truly believe that this team is worse than last year’s 6-10 squad.”

The vastness of my wrongness in what I posted is staggering. The Packers have won 4 games in a row to get to 8-4 with a great shot at making the playoffs as a wild card team. I would like to say that the wheels are about to come off the Vikings and Favre’s season and that they will go in the tank over the next 4 weeks and that the Packers have a shot at catching them and winning the division, but that is just wishful thinking on my part.

The good from last night’s game:
    1) Aaron Rodgers – was off at times during the game, but the 19 yard TD he threw to Finley to make the score 24-14 was a thing of beauty and a throw few NFL QB’s can make on the move.
    2) Jermichael Finley – the Packers finally have what I believe is a great TE. He will go and get the football and is turning into a nice option for Rodgers.
    3) Clay Matthews – his relentless rushing of Flacco and his style of play is great for the Packers D.
    4) Nick Barnett – you may not have noticed it much, but he really helped shut down Ray Rice from coming out of the backfield on play action passed. Rice had been incredible catching the ball coming out of the backfield and Barnett held him down.
    5) Dom Capers and the Defense – great game plan and the No. 1 rated defense in the NFL is playing well.
    6) The O-Line – playing well over the last 4 games and have found a way to keep Rodgers upright. It had also helped that Rodgers is getting rid of the football quicker than he was the first 6-7 weeks of the season.

The bad from last night’s game:
    1) Penalties – this has to be corrected if the Packers want to make the playoffs and if the Packers want to make a run in the playoffs.
    2) Mason Crosby – does anyone have faith in this guy anymore. Every time he lines up for a FG of 30 yards or more, I believe he will miss it.
    3) Special Teams – some o’l crap. Giving up huge kickoff returns right after the Packers have the momentum going their way only to see the momentum swing to the other team. Special teams have been pathetic.
    4) Challenges – who told McCarty to challenge the Kelley Washington TD – he was clearly in for the TD. Great challenge on the fumble call on Grant, I am just asking for better use of the challenge flag from McCarty. You cannot just give up your timeouts and your challenges.
    5) Tramon Williams – great interception that Flacco gift wrapped for him, and one of the pass interference calls on him in the end zone was BS, but I am not sure if he is the answer. He looked beat several times and Chicago, Pittsburgh, Seattle and Arizona are going to throw his way in the remaining 4 games.

Overall, I am surprised and excited that the Packers are in the position that they are in. This team has improved drastically since the Tampa Bay loss and they have much improvement to make. I will say that MM and TT have gotten in gear and now have the Packers poised for the playoffs. Let’s see where they can take Packers with 4 games remaining.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Perhaps I can help a little Jay, in order for you to make a complete conversion.
    1) BAL too, most of us cannot remember such a closely called game. But they evened out.
    2) Distance due to cold ball. Look closely at the fumbled snap by holder on the “push” miss.
    3) One (agreed, too many) 68 yarder KOR. The rest averaged 16 yds. One PR for 6.
    4) The booth. McCarthy cannot see along crowded sideline and the field is high center so he cannot see the other sideline marker.
    5) Bush, Williams, Underwood, Bell, and Ford are babes(and Lee)hav to learn under fire. You cannot expect them to come into the league and right away and play like experienced veterans. Bigby and Collins seem to have matured, the young corners are next. How would you like a guy like Woodson or Harris helping in your maturation process?
Overall, I think the roster core is in place and we can expect just tweaks here and there. May go FA in a couple of spots (ie; K, P to name a couple), but why mix in “oldies” from other teams in with a group that has grown up together and has some elders on our own team to help ‘em?

  • Pack4life

I wont Poo Poo a Dec. W but no Ed Reed made this a gimmee. I believe Finley could have still dominated the middle but who cares. Finley makes the Packers offense more potent than the 07 team. Slocum has to fix this coverage crap, we are using starters and still no success. I dont get Giordano, Bell and other people inactive seems like who ever is covering in the middle gets wired to blocks or falls without being touched. We may need to cut the 3rd fullback Hall or Kuhn and get a special teamer. If you want some real comic relief check out the vikes boards they are ready to panic at 10-2 wow what a joke. Go Pack Beat the Bears!

  • Mark Troy

Dom Capers saved MM and TT their jobs!

I am thoroughly impressed with the D.
I only wish our running game were up a level or two.

    Wow!! I’m excited.

  • Mike from Arizona

Dom is a excellent coach. I am amazed that only after 10 games, he has gone this defense firing on all levels.

I still do not understand why Wells did not start at the beginning of the season. Taucher, a health Cliffton and Wells are making this line better. Sitton has also been good most of the year.

    Bush is a huge liability.

If we do make the playoffs, I sure hope we are not a one and done team.

  • Larry

There are a few things we all know: Williams and Bush are going to get thrown at…what team is going to test Woodson..the clear Def MVP. The success of the secondary is directly related to the defensive line/linebackers. Give the QB 3 seconds and they’ll be fine..give the QB 5 seconds and either will get burned…through PI or completions.

Collins is the x factor for the playoff’s like Bigby was two years ago. If he gets in the zone he could be a game changer.

I don’t believe GB can beat the Vikings. (Please don’t hang the dog) Their west coast is better than ours…their defense matches up well with our offense, the dome noise etc..BUT the loss of E J Henderson is BIG. Playing Arizona at Arizona in the playoff’s will be very hard and the season ending game will not be indicative. If there is a win to be had in Arizona it will be on the backs of Lee and Findley with strong support from Grant/Green. Could MM please put Grant and Green in the same backfield…both can run/block and catch…somewhere there is a mismatch.

This has been fun stuff…beat DA BEARS!

  • Michael Legat

Play of the game was Woodson’s shoestring tackle on McGahee on 1st and goal at the 1. Another excellent 4th quarter on both offense and defense, which we’ve had many of this season and almost none of last year. You want the difference between 6-10 and 8-4? It’s the performance of our playmakers at gut check time and our ability to respond when the other team starts to make a run.

  • Mel e Mel

No way we could run again Ngata, Pryce and Ray Lewis. Thats the only part that wasnt working. Finley is the second most valuble member of the offense. There must be a way to fix special teams. As bad as last years special teams were they have actually gotten worse. College season is over must be some coach out there willing to coach special teams on a playoff caliber team.

  • Jack in Columbus

Many great comments above. I thought ARod did a great job of moving in and out of the pocket last night. He did not yet display the classic Farveian “ole as a D rusher misses, but he was mobile without be happy-footed in avoiding pressure and sacks and occasionally picking up yards with his feet or finding a receiver late. I saw it as a new step up in maturity.

Meanwhile, I am looking forward to seeing Favre’s performance fall off again this year; he looked old, tired and defeated against the Cardinals.

  • Sammy

    Iccy-

I know Paul personally and he can at least be objective, and he admits to being a Favre ball washer like me. However, I don’t think the Packers are quite ready for the Minnesota Brett Favre’s yet. Inconsistency and poor special teams. Maybe we can get that cleaned up and work on our pad level. However, we are getting hot at the right time.

You people amaze me how you can jump on and off of the bandwagon so quickly. I said weeks ago after the Bucs loss, “we need to hang in there and get hot at the right time…just like Arizona did last year” guess what, it looks like we are on our way.

See ya to the fair weather fans…go live in Minnesota…I lived there for 4 years, too many fair weather fans, just like on this site….YEAH YOU ICCY>>>YOU! Now the weather is fair. Look at ya.

  • Mel e Mel

Lived in MN 20 years you will see full blown panic if they lose to Cincy. Cincy will need the game. Unlike 1989!! Good thing is the Vikes will have to play full tilt till the end and will never have a chance to rest their starters.

Hey Mark Troy, I certainly agree with the props for Dom and his Dom-inating Defense!

You mentioned the running game, here is a suggestion…

    Hire Jeff Jagodzinski!!!

    RIGHT NOW!!

Just in time for a playoff push by our offense. Demote Philbin to Ol coach and let Campen carry his clipboard until he is fired after the season and install JJ as our Offensive Coordinator!!!

JJ could inject the same fire and drive into the Offense as DC has done for the Defense.

Remember, he is the guy that was hired to build the offense you see sputtering under propped up coaches (Philbin – overmatched as an OC, Campen – overmatched as an OL coach).

MM needs to give up the play calling and concentrate on game management and DISCIPLINE (eg. LESS PENALTIES), clock management, challenge focus, coaching adjustments (not schemes, leave this to the coordinators) Let JJ come in and sculpt our good offense into the GREAT offense it could be under the right tutelage.

If MM was a true leader, he could see that his current HC/OC/playcaller role is hurting this teams development, he needs to take a step back and let a dynamic offensive coach scheme the gameplan and then MM can focus on trend breaking adjustments and overall management and motivation.

Jeff Jagodzinski is that dynamic individual. perfect fit for this team right now and into the future.

Anybody that says they saw this coming after the Tampa game is full of shit. We were a mediocre 4-4 at that point, blew a fourth quarter lead against a winless team that may be the worst in the league, and had looked vastly inferior to the only 2 good teams we faced (three losses), the Vikes and Bengals. Yes, you could PRAY we got hot, but predicting it or expecting it is another matter.

I didn’t see anything at that point, other than a weak schedule, to be very optimistic about, but that TB loss may turn out to be one of those galvanizing moments that kicked the rest of the season into high gear. Perhaps the sheer embarassment of it all kicked the whole team in the ass. I still have my doubts about how we fair against the NFC elite, but first things first. Let’s get in the playoffs and take our chances from there.

We have alot of road games coming up, perhaps good practice for the playoffs, which I think are extremely likely at this point. How the O-line and D both gelled at the same time is beyond me (maybe the sacrifice of the neighborhood pets to Jobu was not in vain after all) but I’ll certainly take it, and give alot of credit to both the players and coaches for hanging together. Now if we could just do something about ST and all those damn penalties! (Perhaps that’s next to get fixed, or is that too much to ask?)

MeM, I agree that the Vikes will have to play full tilt till the end but that sits on whether the Pack continue to win out – we certainly have the favorable schedule to give us those wins but we have to continue to win to continue to put pressure on the Vikes… With NO winning again and MN losing and going to 10-2 it could be that they decide to accept they will be the number 2 seed. NO really has no one on their schedule that can knock them off their perch the rest of the way. I know, “Any Given Sunday”, but I really believe the Vikes will rest on the last game if we aren’t pushing them at that point. If the Vikes lose to Cincy and we win against the Bears (as we should) it will close the gap even more forcing the Vikes hand at that point.

I also agree that the game was really sloppy based on penalties, but they were called both ways which tells me much of that was just plain tight officiating beyond the “let them play” mentality. I realize we are one of the most penalized teams in the NFL but what happened last night was just craziness. Lots of strange things in that game. Not sure we’ll see that kinda weirdness again the rest of the season. If we can just shore up those special teams I think we strengthen our possibility of winning out.

Watching local news here in Dallas right now and the news is slamming the hell out of the Cowboys right now and they are at 8-4 with San Diego coming to town. My neighbors have already hung up their jerseys, tossed in the towel, etc. They are also saying the Packers are the scariest team in the NFL right now (again local news). I’d like to believe them but we need to keep winning.

    PP,

I know you’ve been hot on Jags for some time now, but you don’t seriously think they’re going to shake up the O coaching staff in the middle of a winning streak do you? I doubt the subject was even considered at our low point after Tampa, let alone now.

Mind you, you could be completely right in your assertion. It’s just more likely that TT would give an hour press conference tomorrow about his true feelings for Brett Favre, under the influence of sodium pentathol, than that they would do what you’re suggesting.

I would be less surprised to discover McMuffin had more mistresses than Tiger than for them to switch OC’s right now.

Doesn’t it seem likely that the reason the offense is doing better is that we have our veteran OT’s back. Also that the defense is starting to become familiar with the new scheme. I’m disappointed we couldn’t get Johnson in at FB but very happy we seem to be improving while other NFC teams are struggling. All credit to #12 for avoiding injury and happy feet when he had that makeshift line missing assignments. Not a lot of improvement in the not so special teams. The Bears had a big advantage over us in that area but with our turnover ratio we should overcome that. It’s always great to beat the Bears but it would be even better this week.

    I have a dream…

  • Doug R

    Call me crazy but:

Say Pack won out to go 12-4 and Vikes stumble going 1-3 over next 4. The Pack would win the division and the seeds would likely be: 1) NO 2) Pack 3) Dallas 4) AZ 5) Vikes 6) Philadelphia (or NYG)

Vikes would then have to go on road as wildcard in 1st round to play….AZ

If they beat AZ and 6th seed beat Dallas, then the Vikes would come to…Lambeau Field for divisional playoff

    I’m just sayin

  • PackerPete

hey Doug R, that sounds like another low Percentage scenario that actually played out where the GBP actually hosted the NFC Championship game at Lambeau after a couple of improbable upsets aligned the stars in our favre-or…

  • Pete H

It is the Vikes….their collapses are the stuff of legend

  • Doug R

Pete, yep, seem to recall the NYG here for a game…

Also, in this scenario, if Vikes beat AZ in wildcard, then Dallas beat 6th seed then Vikes would play NO and Pack would host Dallas setting up possible NFC Championship game at…Lambeau Field if Vikes beat NO

What would ratings of that game be?

    Stranger things have happened…

  • Doug R

Vikes finish with Cincy, @Bears, @Carolina, Giants

they could easily go 1-3 after what we saw on Sunday; Giants may be playing for a playoff spot, Cincy is good and the Bears/Carolina suck but no gimme on road in bad weather
