Packers-Cards Game Blog

4:12 PM:  Sorry for the late arrival, different schedule today with it being a preseason game. I like what I see, though. Punch it in here, make it 23-zip and let Flynn finish the show. I would have took the ball instead of the safety, but what the hell. It only cost us two points.

4:33 PM:  Woodson hurt. That is what you get for playing him in a meaningless game. Blame it on McCarthy. If Aaron Rodgers takes one more snap McCarthy is a complete idiot!

4:36 PM:  At least Rodgers only ran two running plays to run out the clock. No more starters hurt!

4:58 PM:  Mike McCarthy should be fired before the next game. Leaving Rodgers in is just insane!

5:07 PM:  The story of two blowouts? We blow them out this week, they blow us out next week? Please call off the dogs!

  • Dan

Al, completely agree. Get the starters the hell out of there.

Already established domination. Do not get anyone hurt or let the players think beating backups will be anything like next week.

  • Cody

come on let rodgers throw one td guys.. he deserves that!

  • packer_bob

Have to really like the momentum we have shown the last half of the season. I think it’s silly to put too much emphasis on games like last week’s or even this week’s due to the circumstances, but the trend since the TB loss has been unmistakable.

Maybe the team we all thought was possible in the pre, meaning a SB caliber team, has arrived. The stabilizing of the line has been palpable, and that has eliminated most of the sacks put is in poor situations in many of the early games, resulting in Grant getting more carries and doing way more with them. That with Jacobs coming back and helping in 3rd down pass protection as well as out of the backfield, and the addition of Green has given us a true 3 headed monster with the RB’s.

I think most of us knew what we had in Rodgers and the WR’s, but again it’s taken the line to stabilize to allow us to perform up to par in that regard. Also, the emergence of Finley has been huge, and is a weapon we didn’t see much of in the first part of the season.

The defense has been ball hawking all year, but the development of Raji and Mathews and has given us yet more tools, Barnett is back to 100%, Hawk has looked better and better. Our secondary led by Woodson has performed way better than most of us would have thought after losing Harris.

Maybe we’ve arrived. We’ll see how we do against the real Cardinals next week. In the meantime, congratulations to the Pack on excellent 2nd half of the season!

  • zach

i didnt catch the status of woodson….is he okay?

  • packer_bob

    Meant Jackson in above post.

  • packer_bob

I think Woodson just banged his elbow, but haven’t heard anything official.

  • zach

up 26 to 0, put in the second stringer for gods sake

  • packer_bob

Yeah, this is really pretty silly.

  • packer_bob

If we still have Rodgers in there to break Lynn Dickey’s record, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of.

  • Andrew

At this point I’m looking at http://www.nfl.com and refreshing multiple pages. I know the Dickey record would be nice, but why are starters in there…especially on defense…

(hasn’t Boldin and DRC gone down for Arizona)

  • Mel e Mel

I think we are showing the defending NFC champs way too much. M Flynn, Green and Jackson should be the only offense going forward

  • http://sunysb.edu jbob

I totally agree! 11-5 record, Defensive Player of the Year, record breaking quarterback, momentum heading into the playoffs! Who does this McCarthy think he is? FIRE HIM!!!!

  • Dr. Packer

Any further word on Woodson? Can’t afford to lost that guy!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Relax, Al, MM is no fool, the starters are done. The point has been made; we certainly can compete. Review your collective comments at 4-4 and REPENT, my friends.

  • Rocky70

    You got it, LarryTex

You can’t play scared …………… especially with injuries ……….. Some of these “wise fans” need to finally let the professionals make the calls ………. Same from me, go back & read all your 4-4 comments …… A little red-faced now, hey……… Like I said more than once …. 1) Qualify for the playoffs …. 2) Peak going into the playoffs …………. Nothing else matters…………

LarryTex, at least two of us had it right………. Comes with age & experience. ………..

  • jonnyfootballhero

Lt, you were right!! I was definetly one of those guys calling for MM/TT to be fired. I’m currently enjoying a big helping of humble pie with a side dish of crow…..mmmmmm delish!! It is great being in the playoffs, especially with the Pack playing well… I hope they can take care of the Cards the same as today….GO PACK GO!!

Rocky, do you just pop in to stir the pot?? Are you a lawyer, cuz it seems like you enjoy arguing a little too much… at least LT has been around all season and has made valid points and arguments and not just “I told you so” type comments….

But I don’t care, the Pack is in the PLAYOFFS!!!!

  • Rocky70

” Rocky, do you just pop in to stir the pot?? Are you a lawyer, cuz it seems like you enjoy arguing a little too much… ”

Arguing is one of the spices of life ……………. Especially when one is vindicated in the end……………. It’s called point, set, match …………….

  • Rocky70

I just wish all of the old & former ‘doom & gloomers’ were still posting……….. I’d love to hear their adjusted points of view ………….. Hey, we’re all Packer Fans here ………. Show yourselves & offer up an explanation ………….. Got the balls ??? …………. LOL.

  • Larry

Woodson didn’t look in any pain on the sidelines…I hope he’s good to go next week…all I can say is WOW! Total D line domination! Linebackers sent a message today! I like our chances!

Rocky and LarryTex agreeing! Must be a new year!!!!!!!!

  • Rocky70

Woody looked alright in the lockerroom, also, after the game & during MM’s post-game to the team……….. Look for MM’s post-game presser later.

  • Rocky70

    Per Jay Glazer from MM:

MM pulled Woody for precautionary measures…………. He will play next week.

    Good news………….

  • iccyfan

packer_bob Says: “If we still have Rodgers in there to break Lynn Dickey’s record, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of.”

Nope – just long enough to pass BF’s season high, leaving Lynn Dickey the remaining record holder by 24 yards! I like it…

Or they might have left him in long enough to get TD pass #30; he has been pretty “giving” the last several weeks with rushing TD’s carded by Grant, Jackson & Green. Possibly he has some performance clauses and they were giving him a chance to meet them…don’t know.

In any case, OUTSTANDING conclusion to the regular season. I said this earlier; we didn’t need to “save” anything as the Cardinals have 16 weeks of tape, plus they’ve seen us twice (counting preseason). They know what we do well, just as we know what they want to do. The only concern with playing starters is “injury” and it didn’t appear Woodson needed anything more than ice; appears we got away with it! They on the other hand incured injuries to Cromartie (probably not significant) and Boldin.

  • AATP

I think everyone worried a bit too much about how long the starters played… It’s a friggin’ football and it IS still the regular season… There’s a whole lotta teams out there that have nothing to play for but they are still playing their starters… Holding players out to save them for the NEXT game to me is bullshit… Let them play and let them continue to roll… Too many times I’ve seen teams sit their needed players only to see them come out flat and lose in the playoffs. I like that they’re rolling, continuing to roll and will create a new game plan for the playoff game against the same team. I for one am not crying because they had the starters in there into the 3rd quarter. AR was 25 yards short of the record and MM pulled him anyway, could have left him out there to get his 25 yards but didn’t so it obviously wasn’t about that record. I think next week will be a closer game but I really don’t see the outcome being much different unless we totally lay an egg… I think the Packers are better team in this matchup. I’m no longer worried about the Eagles as I was before either. Every NFC team is beatable it appears – the Vikes really put a hurting on the Giants – they kinda scare me again though if we make it that far… The only way we play the Vikes again is if we win out and the Vikes win their playoff game and we’d play them for the NFC Championship game so the chances aren’t really that good as I think the Cowboys have the tools to beat the Vikes in IMHO.

Now, before everyone starts throwing out the “what if’s” on keeping the starters playing, remember, this is my opinion and it’s football – I personally was not ready to watch a pre-season game. I personally enjoy watching our offense really hit on all cylinders as they did most of today. GO PACK!!!

  • Rocky70

    AR -

Highest QB rating in a season for a GB Packer since Bart Starr ……….. First QB in NFL history to throw for 4000+ the first 2 years of starting………….. Led all NFL QBs in rushing……….. 30 TD passes + 5 rushing TDs with only 7 INTs………… Hasn’t thrown a single INT in a playoff game …………….

    And the list goes on………………

  • AATP

Rocky70, and the best thing? BF can’t break a few of those records even if he plays next year… :) The First QB in NFL history to throw for 4000+ in the first two years of starting is a record that AR will hold alone for now… Highest QB rating in a season since Bart Starr, again, BF won’t get that one either… A lot of things to relish in this QB… I’m jazzed to say the least…

  • Rocky70

    AATP

Another I forgot to add to the list ……………. AR hasn’t told an untruth the entire 2009 off-season or during the season………….

Saw on another blog ………….. Pack at Cardinals ……….. Sat. night……… NBC.

  • Mark Troy

Only a numbnuts would call for McCarthy’s firing at this point – the end of an 11-5 season.

  • Mike from Arizona

I was at the game today and they played great. Outside of Warner, Rolle, Wilson, the Cards played most of their starters the whole game. Some of the media stated that the Cards played alot of the reserves. That is simply not true.

The Packers have too much talent and should beat the Cards on Saturday.

    GO PACK GO !!!!!!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

There really isn’t much to say; an excellent Pre which led many of us to over rate our guys. Then the whippings by MIN and 4-4 with the shock of CIN. The bye, and then turning it around until the humiliation of TB. The streak, then the reality of PIT, a winable game lost in the last second. The end of a turnaround season from 6-10.
    Now what, who knows?
Regardless of how we end up some truths remain.
MM still a tad conservative, although we really don’t know what role AR has in that since he makes the final call at the line. Early troubles were caused by instability on the OL and that has to be corrected in the off season. We need to beef up the corners. The OTs and the CBs are the soft spots for the future, if only because of the longevity factor. However, we could be blessed with a few more years of Woodson and Harris, but I have my doubts. Even with the improvement of pass protection due, obviously, with the return of Tausch, we need better line play in the running game which we have not had since Green in his prime.
As you all know I’m still not satisfied w/ our RB stable. I think we are maximizing what we get out of Grant, Jackson, and Green simply because of AR, and I don’t think thats enough to go all the way.
Hell, what do I know, I thought we’d be in the playoffs because of the Pre, and then jumped momentarily on the band wagon to dump MM after TB.
Regardless of how this plays out 11-5 exceeds even my optimistic view last August. You just never know.

Some of you people are never happy , the teams that go to super bowl are teams that do not rest starters. The Colts have rested starters for years and have many first round exits.
The 1996 Broncos rested everyone and lost at home to the Jags in round one , the next year they rested nobody and won the super bowl.
There is no way the Cardinals are blowing us out . In fact, if the Cardinals do not find a running game fast they are done next week and trying to find a running game against the number one run defense is not going to happen.
Dont panic people , it is only a bruise for Woodson. I could hear it now , if we lost today you people would have been saying we have no chance next week.
There is just too much athleticsm on the Packers offense for the Cardinals.
Remember this , the loser of the super bowl for the last 10 years has either not made the playoffs or lost in the first round.
Just sit back and enjoy what is happening here , the Packers are the hottset team in the NFC going into the playoffs , they have averaged 29 points a game and that is even higher in the last 9 games. The Saints are done , no team has ever lost their last 3 games and went to the super bowl.
We would not have to face the vikings until the NFC title game and we know how the Vikings choke in those games.

  • Jeff

Yes , the media is lying about the Cards not playing starters and it is because they are panicing, they see the small market Packers going to the super bowl and they cant take it.

  • Jeff

Tony Dungy picks the Cards for next week, good , that comes from a guy who could never get out of the first round except for the year he won the super bowl.

  • Jeff

We all to well know Favre’s record against Dallas in the playoofs , 0-3.
The Vikings beat a Giant team today that was out of it and rested everyone.
The Vikings do not scare me , they lost in Chicago with a chance to clinch the #2 seed and they lost to a very bad Bear team , The Vikings are the team that lost 3 out of 4.
The team I was concerned with was the Eagles because they have now won in Philly since 1963 , but now if we see them it would be in Green Bay.

  • Doug R

someone said we would only play MN in NFC championship but not true – If Philly wins next week , we would go to MN the next week. If Dallas wins, they go to MN and we go to Saints (the saints with 1 seed play lowest seeded team remaining)

  • Rocky70

Correction ……….. Packer – Cardinal game on Sunday at 3:30 on FOX …….

There is no doubt in my mind that if Warner had played the entire game the final score would have been different ………….. How about 33-10.

  • TRIP

Yeah, you can’t call for MM’s head at this point. This was a good regular season, the only embarrassment was getting swept handily by Favre and the Vikings, but we still have an opportunity to redeem ourselves in the playoffs! Arod is a top tier talent, I feel like in 3-4 years, we need to draft another good QB in the first or second round for them to sit and learn the way Arod did. A good QB is pivotal to any successful team in 2010. We have to keep that up. The saints look flat, the vikings looked flat but had a good last 6 qtrs of football, eagles looked like top dogs and got pounded today (pun intended), cowboys look strong but them actually winning a playoff game is a foreign idea these days, and we get to play the same team next week. Playoffs should be interesting, to say the very least!! GO PACK!

  • Mel e Mel

The Cards best pass rusher Bert Berry and Pro Bowl Safety Antrell Rolle did not play.
It will be the defending NFC champs next year. Go Pack!

  • Mel e Mel

    Next week excuse me

  • Mpwest42

I was at the game today in Arizona and will be there next week for the playoffs! The intensity and swagger the team showed today was outstanding for the players as well as the thousands of fans that made the trip to AZ! The Pack are heading into the playoffs full steam ahead, why would you want it any other way! Bye the way Woodson is ok! TRUST ME! Go Pack! TT and MM have made the packers into a 11-5 football team with the youngest roster in the NFL. The top rated rushing defense the 2nd rated defense overall, a 4,000 yrd QB 1,000 yrd HB and two 1,000 yrd receivers two years running (NFL RECORD) Great emerging talent, Ragi, Jones, Matthew’s etc…. what else do you want!
OH YA if your AL Fire MM and TT for the hundredth time this year! Great Idea!!

  • http://Orlando Mark

Great Sunday for the Pack. The team exceeded all my expectations, avoided injury and looks better every week. Of course the Cards will be a different team next week. The playoffs are different than the regular season in any case. Almost any team can get hot. The Giants, Cards and Pitt just seemed to have everything go their way as low seeds. My biggest worry is the pass defense. The Cards would normally try to isolate their third receiver on Bush or Bell and I don’t know why we didn’t see that. Of course if our offense is clicking it might not matter. ST’s and penalties are definitely better, can’t wait for next week. GO PACK!!!

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

There is a good chance this team will be remembered for the (5) losses and for the life of me I can’t remember any of the (3) in 07. Each loss this year IMO led, indirectly, to the playoff finish.
The MIN games were due to the injuries of Clifton, Tauscher, Raji, and Matthews. Matthews was on the cusp but the season turned around when those four came into their own. CIN caught us, and others, totally off guard. At TB we were throughly out coached and not prepared. PIT, a toss up, literally.
This experience sure bodes well for the future if we can keep these guys together and just a tweak here and there.

  • CommanderJoe

What we have witnessed in 2009, particularly in the second half of the season, is the maturation of a very young team. A team that has emerged nicely from the shadow cast by BF.

The 2009 Packers are creating a new identity and it’s very cool to watch!

A lot to be excited about in the coming years.

  • packer_bob

Backing up a little bit in the thread, I was one of the ones that said we should come out to win the game. But we were up 26-0 at half. I felt it was a little ridiculous to have Rodgers, Finley, Driver etc. on offense, and several of our studs on defense, still running around for the most of the third quarter and in some cases, the entire game.
I understand what these guys get paid to do, and also understand that if asked any of them would say they want to play. It’s just that the potential cost way exceeds any benefit, especially when you’re up 26-0. If building momentum is your argument, I think it’s been done by that point.

LT, I totally agree that several things needed to turn around for us to finish the way we did, and fortunately it seems they all did. (The losses in 07 were both Bear games and the Cowboys game btw. We TO’d ourselves into losing the first Bears game after a dominating first half, the 2nd was the cold windy affair in Chicago during the holidays where we didn’t look like we wanted to be there. Dallas I think we all remember.) I doubted we would be able to get a cohesive line together with our old tackles, but they have held up. I’ve been high on Raji and Mathews from the start, but the level of their growth and contributions has been a pleasant surprise. Anyway, we’ll need to find younger tackles, but that is a discussion for the future and the fact is we certainly much good young talent on both sides of the ball to build around.

  • packer_bob

I also wouldn’t read as much into our victory yesterday as some on the board are want to do. Not saying we can’t beat Arizona–in fact I like our chances with our proclivity to take the ball away and Arizona’s not so hot TO ratio.

But what we saw yesterday could be just as much an illusion as pre-season. It was pretty clear the Cards were not playing to win, Whisenhut said as much after the game when he talked about having two plans: one if Minnesota won and one if they didn’t.

The Cards are about as Jeckyl and Hyde as it gets. They are just as capable of delivering a scintillating performance next week as looking beatable. I know we’re capable of beating them, but taking for them granted is foolhardy. (Not that I expect the team to, but even for homer fans, it’s foolhardy.)

Personally I’d rate the game a toss up, which since we’re the road team speaks highly for us. Regardless of the outcome, I’d say it’s been a successful season.

  • Larry

After it’s all said and done…I think the only things to take from this game are:

    1. We can block their pass rush…AR should have time to throw

    2. We can reach their QB..any of them and Warner can’t move.

    3. They’ll defend Findley differently and we need to compensate with Jennings, Driver, Nelson and Jones getting a better look. I really think we showed them too much Findley. Although he’s played that way the last 5/6 games.

    4. They gave us the quick stuff and I believe it will be available again because of the matchup problems.

    5. I think (I hope) Capers will blitz and not give Warner the time to throw if possible.

    6. Lastly, we can run on them and screen them because of the receivers.

    GO PACK!

  • Abraham7325

I cried for MMs head and I will continue to do so until we are come out ready and ramped for playoff type games. We came in flat in both Minn. games, Pitt the same, and TB loss most troubling following an emotional loss to Minn. we needed leadership to move us past the loss and ready to beat a bad team. MM did turn it on the last eight games (fear for his job), I give him props for that turnaround, but I want that edge the crispness no matter what team we compete from start to finish.
The next few games (I hope meaning we win one) will be telling of MMs ability to lead this team to play in big games. TT has the team almost in place to compete for a SB (if a few more players step up we have the team), do we have the coach in place to take this team the distance and hopefully the next Pack dyanasty? Thus far MMs resume comes up short. I maybe wrong, in fact I hope MM proves me wrong.

But I do have to say, I’m happy to see us in the playoffs after the start of this season.

I said the same thing about TT and I have to say I was wrong. After this draft, I would say his best and the best this year in the NFL he deserves some slack.

  • Sammy

    Rockhead70,

You try to call others out but you were the one who left this blog for several weeks after the Bucs beat us…I still think you are a fair weather fan. You only came back when the Pack started winning again.

However, I worry about us having to play the nickle often against the Cards. Bush will not match up well with any of the Cards receivers. I hope he doesn’t look like he did against Pitt.

  • Rocky70

Head coaches who lead their teams to 11-5 records into the playoffs get hired …………… They don’t get fired. …………Especially for some weird concept such as ‘crispness’. ………. WTF ?? ………..

I doubt MM is overly concerned about what you may want ………… But I’m sure TT is relieved that you have cut him ‘some slack’. ………. LOL.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Abraham, after the Bucs loss everyone was in fear of losing their jobs. MM has shown he is a good offensive coach and smart enough to make the right change to his defensive staff. I don’t think any coach could win with the O-tackles we started with and only good fortune and nimble legs kept us from having Flynn as our QB. We need some pieces this next off season but headed in the right direction, be a little more grateful. Look at the rest of our division including the Vikes who are probably one and done.

  • Larry

There’s a choice to be made here..against a top QB you can play nickel or dime OR blitz to add pressure. I believe that the Pitt game was the lowest amount of blitzes in this current win streak of 7 of 8. I for one prefer to blitz…there are three chances to win with a blitz….1. you get there and get the sack. 2. You pressure the QB and affect the pass enough for an incompletion or maybe a pick and 3. you force him to move out of the pocket and since KW cannot run you hopefully stop him for a small gain.

The last play of the Pitt game is an example of how a good seasoned QB can beat even dime with enough time…thats how the rules are set up. BLITZ all day long is my game plan and maybe we’ll see Leinert have to play.

I realize if you don’t get there it could mean a big play, well they’ll need a bunch of big plays to keep up.
