2009 Recap

I have to admit I haven’t followed much of the conversation since my last entry, so pardon me if I repeat some of your thoughts, which I probably will. Either way, here goes.

First Quarter -  No way on God’s green earth did I see the Packers starting out 2-2. I was sure 4-0 and was going to be the record. I could have saw 3-1 because of the trip to Minnesota, but never saw the Bengal loss coming. Of course the Bengals did end up making the playoffs and they were playing their best football arguably the first month of the season. Just the opposite for Green Bay. It was definitely a shocker and for whatever reason the Packers hit snooze on that wake-up call.

The loss in Minnesota was the first sign the Packers couldn’t stop the pass, a problem that ultimately ended their season. Brett Favre won a classic shootout between the past and present Packers’ quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers astonishingly throw for almost 400 yards despite getting sacked eight times. Getting sacked was Rodgers’ and the Packers’ biggest problem of the first four games.

Second Quarter -  The next four games featured three gimmies and a home date with the Vikings. The Packers rolled over Detroit and Cleveland but the ole’ gunslinger embarrassed the Packers in his return to Lambeau and the residual effect was a loss to Tampa Bay the following week. Six weeks later than they should have the Packers got the wake-up call that actually woke them up. The loss to the Bucs and a one-point last play loss in Pittsburgh ended up costing the Packers a division title, despite the two losses to Minnesota. Just goes to show how important every game is in the NFL.

Third Quarter -  As low as the Packers were starting the second half of their season November 15th, it is amazing what they did in the third quarter of the season. They opened it by beating eventual NFC East Champion Dallas Cowboys and closed it by beating AFC wildcard team Baltimore, both quite handily I might add. In between they beat the 8-8 49ers and the annual patsy Detroit on Thanksgiving. From 4-4 to 8-4 in what seemed like overnight.

Fourth Quarter -  The Packers continued their hot streak down the stretch but the blueprint to beat them was laid out by Pittsburgh in a shootout in Pittsburgh that was won on the last play of the game. The Packers got burned for 503 passing yards by Ben Roethlisberger and the Packers’ pass defense was never able to recover. Of course not having Aaron Kampman and Al Harris certainly played a role in that, but the Packers simply had no answer for top-flight quarterbacks like Favre, Roethlisberger and the Cardinal’s Kurt Warner in the playoffs.

Playoffs -  In one of the funnest games to watch in playoff history the Cardinals beat the Packers 51-45. Neither team could stop the other and the Cardinals loss at New Orleans last Sunday is probably only slightly worse than what the Packers would have done down there. I’d like to think the Packers could have done better but the Saints dropped 50 on the Packers down there last year, so it wasn’t too likely.

In the end -  I myself consider 2009 a successful season taking into account the Packers were coming off a 6-10 season and by most people’s account were headed for a repeat performance. I had much greater expectations and the Packers nearly achieved them. I can’t remember if I said 12-4 or 13-3 and don’t feel like looking it up, but I wasn’t too far off. I was indeed way wrong on Favre and the Vikings, who as much as I hate to say I believe are Super Bowl bound.

On that note, if anybody had any questions about what kind of a record-grubbing, selfish player Brett Favre is they got their answer Sunday with an explanation point. For Favre and the Vikings to go for a fourth-and-four at the Cowboys ten with 1:50 to go in the game and the Cowboys out of time outs was without doubt the most classless act I have ever seen in the NFL. And I remember the Mike Ditka days in Chicago and the Buddy Ryan days in Philly like it was yesterday. Not even Forrest Gregg would have stumped that low. Last I checked their isn’t a 24-point play in the NFL. Hopefully the Gods of football are just as unforgiving as the Gods of golf.

That said, I think the NFL wants a Peyton-Brett Super Bowl and that is what they will get. I would give the Saints a chance if they were any other team than the Saints. They are the NFL’s version of the Chicago Cubs and will be more loved for never winning a championship than they would be if they actually won one. Vikings win 49-31.

In the AFC I believe the Jets miracle run will come to an end in Indy. The Jets aren’t playing the Bengals or the perennial playoff chokers San Diego this week, this is the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts make the playoffs in their sleep and have won one Super Bowl in the Manning era and are primed to win another this year. The Colts might not be able to run the ball but like the Packers in years past it is mostly because they don’t try to. Why would you when you have a four-time MVP at quarterback? The Jets will probably control the ball for 45 minutes and lose 21-10.

I’ll worry about the Super Bowl later. I hope I’m wrong on both accounts as it would be great to see the #1 offense against the #1 defense in the Super Bowl. We could settle the old debate once and for all.

Wow, you “experts” slay me. Time to put down the BF/AR controversy because the two camps are never going to agree anyway.
Fresh thoughts; both the NYG and ARI losses WERE HARRIS’ FAULT. Plexico was too big and strong for that matchup, and he didn’t show up to cover Fitzgerald taking away all the other things Woodson could have done. So there you have it, I’m going back to bed!

I used to be proud to be called a Cheesehead/Packer fan but no more. I see what friends who didn’t grow up in Wisconsin have always told me. Most Cheeseheads share a brain with their headgear. I can’t believe the low class trailer park mentality shown by so called Packer fans/Favre haters. Thanks alot for showing me the light and forcing my Packerhood underground.

    http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/Michael_Adams

The videos of the Michael Adams sack are no longer available on NFL.com but here’s a couple photos, including the hand on the facemask. Rodgers is facing right (see Tauscher) and Adams is on his back, having come unblocked from the left side.

What am I missing and how did I embellish my position with untruths? How is this not a blind-side blitz?

Mark – I knew what you were saying. I wrote something absurd in response to PB (Rodgers not responsible for 2007 loss) because I thought his addition of Rodgers to the argument (with Rocky) was absurd to begin with. LT is a master of the absurd and takes it to a new level with the addition of Al Harris to the mix. This thread is now treading on “Far Side” territory…

  • Pete H

would you please go to Youtube and search it among the 4,000,000 videos there are of it…..my god

I have to imagine that blind side would imply the side from which your head and eyes aren’t facing.

    Thoughts on the games:

I was right about the Colts, they covered, and I almost got the 14 point win. But the Jets played much better than I anticipated.

The NO game went about the way I expected with the final score, but the Vikings should have won that game. In a wierd way, as much as I love Favre, I really would not have liked the idea of him hoisting the Lombardi tropy in purple.

His throw at the end of the game was pretty bad. I don’t understand (and this goes back to the latter part of his career in GB) why he seems so reluctant to just run with the football. We all know he’s not the most fleet of foot, but sometimes you don’t have to be. I’m sure he thought Rice was going to come back to the ball on the last throw, but why he couldn’t have just continued up the sideline for 7 or 8 yards is beyond me. Does he turn into a pumpkin if he crosses the line of scrimmage still holding the ball?

Still the Vikings really killed themselves with all those TO’s. To even have a chance to win with 5 TO’s is ridiculous. The Vikings easily could have dominated that game and I believe they would have won the SB. Now I think NO will.

In the end, maybe we all got a little of what we wanted. Favre got to show he’s still one of the best QB’s in the league at 40, and got to another title game. Favre haters got to watch the Vikes piss it away and Favre throw one of the boneheaded picks for which he’s known. And even those of us that are Favre fans won’t have to suffer through him hoisting the Lombardi trophy in purple. (At least this year.)

  • packer_bob

Some time ago, someone on here suggested he would rather have Ryan Grant than AP because of AP’s fumbleitis, and I pretty much laughed in his face.

While I wouldn’t go that far, I do owe that person an apology. It’s certainly a topic at least worthy of discussion.

What did the Vikings have on their gloves yesterday, Crisco?

  • Rick

    Game thoughts of the weekend.

Dirty Sanchez could not bring his team back. He is still has not developed a good ability to read defenses. Great job on the #10 overall pick Jets. Any decent QB could have ball controlled and Revis Island, hahaha. Pwnd!! You could have had Kyle Boller do that job and had a top DB drafted instead.

I am not a Colts fan but man, but if Peyton gets enough looks at your defensive scheme he will kill your team. The Jets D is stout and Peyton just adjusted stayed in the pocket and killed them. Our Packers D would have been toast.

Vikings are a great team. They loaded up on a top quality QB to take them to the promise land and ACH, ACH Choke!!. The fumblin, stumblin, Interception throwing crew hack up a hairball. Got love it as a Packers fan to see the Vikes take themselves out of the game. So who was the mistaken 12th man in the huddle??!! I am sure he is a little bummed today.

Saints. They did what I wish we had done to Warner. HIT, HIT and HIT again the old QB. What a game!!

Well off to work. I hope everbody enjoyed their weekend

  • Larry

The difference between AR and BF is that AR would have recognized he needed 5 yards and run for as many as he could get once outside the pocket. There were only 3 things that were absolutely not acceptable. 1. A sack 2. A pick and 3. a fumble recovered by NO.

Childress recognized 1 and 3 so he bootlegged out Favre rather than handing off to Adrian Peterson and trusted the BF would avoid #2 at all cost. Welcome to the GB Brett Favre playoff world.

BF should have connected the dots…but as usual did not. If there is one difference between AR and BF it is that AR would have not made the poor decision that the gunslinger has HISTORICALLY made.

AR in that situation would never/ever have thrown the ball to the middle of the field. He may not have gained 5 yards (although it looked like a bunch were there) but there would have been a 4th down and a Longwell kick.

So ends the legacy of the gunslinger….his balls bigger than his brain.

  • packer_bob

Favre did take a beating in that game.

You’re right about that 12th man in the huddle. SO many things had to go right for the Saints to win that game. All the TO’s. The 12th man penalty coming right out of a timeout. Then Brett’s bad throw. The ref’s bailing them out on that pass interference in OT. The spots.

I actually think the Saints will win it all—I’m not that impressed with the Colts. But it was clear to me yesterday the Vikings were the better team. They just couldn’t stop shooting themselves in the foot.

  • Pierre

What QB do you think will come to mind for most football fans when considering ill advised passing attempts, in crucial, game-determining situations, in NFL playoff history? There’s a legacy! Enough said.

  • packer_bob

    Joe Namath.

  • Pete H

Tony Romo’s earning his wings there too

  • iccyfan

    Pierre Says:

Gotta give credit where credit is due. While PB generally annoys the hell out of me, there’s no doubt he has a quick wit and that made me laugh! “C’mere Suzy – I think I want to kiss you” – Classic!

You made a soda come out of my nose pb. You owe me a shirt cleaning and may have to call my boss about why my keyboard is ruined. HAHA – Namath, thats a classic

  • Devil’s Advocate…

I didn’t recognize the Butt Farve that threw only 7 INT’s this year but I did recognize the one that threw the big INT to sink the Vikes. I think we’ll see him back next year arriving in time for the Vike’s third preseason game. Gotta admit, seeing Butt in purple disgust me and should disgust every Packer fan. Funny part is, I’d been behind him in a color other than a division team (and especially the Vikes). And watching Butt throw only 7 INT’s this year to his yearly average of 21(?) wasn’t much fun either. About as much fun as having someone buy a house next door, identical to mine, but only having to pay $1500 in property taxes while I’ve paid $4500 every year for the last 16 years. Sometimes, it’s how you look at things……. Might find that the very same people that are fine w/him cutting back on INT’s by 60-70% for some other team, get snotty, if that gets changed to money and they’re on the short end of it!!!
Found the ‘who’s the better QB” argument, earlier, interesting….. The big W and L guys were behind the stats QB. Hey, I’d take Bradshaw!! Maybe he didn’t have gaudy stats, but he didn’t go out help lose you games either. Three SB rings says it all!!!! If you like the guy who throws for 500 yards, 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s better than the guy who throws for 150 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT’s but get’s the W, so be it…..
Last, I wish you guys would get over your Farve hater thing. Most of us just hate Farve in purple!!! It was the best senerio for him. It was one that he new would piss off alot of fans, fans of 16 years. He knowingly made his choice. I know I wouldn’t shit on a friend of 16 years and become buddies w/an enemy!!!

  • Rick

Preach it brother , preach it.

    -Waves hanky in the air-

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Even DEXTER lives by a code.

Can’t believe I forgot………….. I harp about this all……. the………..time!!!! The reffing!!! Shit once again!!! For both teams!!! Agree w/ya packer_bob. The PI in overtime was crap!!! The PI that gave the Vikes the ball at the 1 yd. line and eventually a 28-28 tie……. crap!!!! They have the no contact after 5 rule to help get WR’s open and yet they reward poor passes and covered WR’s w/PI penaties!!!!

  • iccyfan

I dunno, DA. The PI penalty against the Saints in the endzone (leading to the tie) was pretty clear-cut. They deserved that one but the Vikes benefitted from several other penalties that were questionable; hated seeing the referee tuck Brett’s shoulder pad back into his jersey as BF lobbied for a call. There was a defensive holding on a 3rd & five incompletion that extended a TD drive and a pair of personal fouls that were dicey. Even so, all’s well that end’s well! I’m loving the distress evident in Viking Nation today – share the pain is my new motto. Hearing the sound bite where he’s gonna go home to Kiln and talk it over with the family is music to my ears; Childress held hostage until training camp – Love it!!!

  • Reid

With 6 minutes to go in the first half I texted a Bears-fan friend who routinely harrassed me all year about BF the following: “This game is shaping up to be a game that is determined by an untimely interception”. Yes, tooting my own horn, ball-washers can just deal with it.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Well, iccyfan……….. Who knows?? Looked as if they pulled each other down from the replays. Either way, the NFL needs to get things straightened out. Giving out penalties to well covered receivers is asking for trouble.
Just thinking back today about the beginning of the year. It was all about drinking TT’s kool-aid. Here at the end of the year it was about Butt Farve drinking the Viking’s kool-aid!!! It was all about his decision to turn his back on his old team and fans of 16 years for a chance at a SB w/the enemy….. and it almost worked!!!! It may still…… He drank the kool-aid.

  • Rocky70

Hard to comprehend the BF versus AR argument ………… One plays for the Pack, one doesn’t ……….. Everything else is moot.

    Per Iccy:
” I am very happy the Vikings lost and it doesn’t bother me one iota that BF’s dream season ended with yet another poorly conceived throw that snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. ”

Well said ……… Grab any poll of Packer Fans you wish, the overwhelming majority feel the same way ………… Or, visit some unmoderated Packer Forum & the opinions are down right nasty concerning the ‘BF Drama’ …………. Too much for this blog ……. Which is probably good …………..

  • Pete H

Gotta agree with DA. When are these guys gonna be allowed to play football?

  • http://www.cheeseheadhq.blogspot.com Gbpfan

Why do people keep comparing Rodgers and Favre. Even more surprising, why do people point out things that Favre does that Rodgers doesn’t? Maybe I forgot that a player who’s started for two years is supposed to be equal to or better at everything than a 10+ year starter. Also, that last play of the AZ game was not Rodgers’s fault at all. Number one, the guy who hit him came in untouched in less than a few seconds. Number two, he was blindsided and facemasked at pretty much the same time, while he was throwing, and even the all-powerful Favre wouldn’t have been able to hold onto the ball in those circumstances.

    Go Pack Go!

  • Rocky70

Although both the Vikes & Saints are formidable teams, in my mind neither looked like the ‘elite team’ you expect out of an NFC Championship game ………. Turnovers, penalities, shoddy tackling, suspect playcalling & questionable decisions at critical points ……….. If the Vikes & Saints are the two best in the NFC (based on Sunday’s game) …………. GB may not have far to catch either team in 2010.

IMO, GB’s “A” game may have been enough to beat either in yesterday’s game ……. That’s the next hurdle for the Pack ………….. Bringing their ‘A’ game every time out …………… A couple FAs & a draft like 2009 in 2010 may be the difference maker ……

  • http://Orlando Mark

Gbp, I think the QB to look at for comparison would be Manning. If you notice he doesn’t get sacked alot anymore. Possibly because he knows where everyone is presnap. Also I think he has a deeper drop so he can keep blitzers in front of him. #12 will improve along with the whole offense given time, I think it took Manning 4 or 5 yrs.

  • Pete H

Since I am just plain sick of any BF conversation, I am going to go in a different direction. Worst player at each position of a ll time…Packers. I was born in ’72 so my library only goes back to then. Also, they’ve had to have significant time.

At QB is Randy Wright, with a TJ Rubley honorable mention, just because of that one play. RB Darrell Thompson, FB Paul Ott Carruth…WR Phillip Epps, Bill Schroeder.. TE Tyrone Davis. On the line: Eucker?, Koch, Michaels, Veingrad, and obviously Mandarich.

On the defense. Carrecker and Jamal Reynolds at the ends. Donnie Humphrey (same draft as Carrecker) and that fat assed Darius Holland. The linebackers: Hannibal Navies, Fred Strickland, and Cumby…just because of the Fridge. The corners are the easiest IMO Tsuck and Carroll….Estus Hood honorable mention. At safety.///its gotta be Mossy Cade, and then a toss up between Marquand Manual, Roman, Jue, Marcus Anderson…..I may be hard on Bigby, but he’s WAY better than what we’ve had since Leroy….at kicker any Zendejas that the Packers have employed, with Crosby gaining ground fast. and the punter is either BJ Sander…still shocked by that pick, and that sucktoad they had last year…..allright I’ve cleared my head

  • Pete H

please..DEAR GOD…do not tell me you just said he was blindsided!!!!!

  • http://www.cheeseheadhq.blogspot.com Gbpfan

My bad. He wasn’t blindsided. But judging from the replays, Rodgers had no idea that that guy was there.

  • Sammy

With 3 turnovers lost in the redzone, Favre should never have had to attempt to drive downfield to break the tie. The Vikes had 280 more total yards than the Saints, Favre had a great year, and frankly, it is nice to see the Vikings are still 0-4 in the Superbowl.

I just hope Brett retires (for good) so we don’t get swept again next year.

Now I guess I’ll cheer for the Saints as they are the underdog and never have won the big show. Anyone else like to see the Saints will it all? Go Saints…..that just doesn’t sound good…Go Pack, that’s better!!!!!!!

  • Steve Cheez

Don’t forget Tom Birney for Kicker.

  • Rocky70

An emotional Viking Fan ………. Funny stuff ……….

  • Pete H

    Tom Birney…..how could I forget

  • packer_bob

Yeah, Sammy, I’m absolutely pulling for the Saints. I hope Manning gets knocked around just as bad as Favre did yesterday.

That Viking fan is a real class act, yelling and cursing like that in front of his kids. That was funny, Rocky!

GBPfan, welcome aboard. I haven’t visited your site yet today–I’ll get on there today or tomorrow.

  • iccyfan

Any discussion of worst Packers ever has to take into account the “opportunity cost” to acquire said player. Per your post, Jamal Reynolds in round one is a winner; same with TBuck & Carroll.

I’ll go back a bit farther, but RB Barty Smith was a high first-round pick in the early 70′s who provided very little bang for the buck; 11th Rounder (same year) Eric Torkelson had a better career! While Randy Wright was not stellar, he pales in comparison to the king’s ransom paid for John Hadl (two 1st rounders plus change), he of 6 td’s and 21 int’s in the only full season (4-12) he played for GB. If you factor in the Lynn Dickey trade we pulled off to replace the failed Hadl, the price goes much higher. My gawd but the 70′s were a wasteland…

Underappreciated long-time Packers would also be a fun distraction. John Anderson, LB from Michigan was always one of my favorites…

  • Larry

    Add Kenny Ruetgers to underappreciated

  • Sammy

    Mandarich the biggest bust!!!
Brian Nobel….underrater. Anyone remember Nobel? Got hurt too early in this career.

  • http://Orlando Mark

    Funny, Rocky.

  • roy jamison

I watched that Viking-Saints game with neutral interest. But, Favre had a great game. His running backs blew the game with fumbles that could have easily lead to scores. And just when you thought the hilarity couldn’t get any better, the refs find a 12th man in the huddle. These are the same guys who witnessed late hit after late hit on Favre but only threw one flag out of courtesy. Hell, the Packers shoulda tried the same schtick if they knew there wouldn’t be any penalty.

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Or, here’s one……. With no ruling on the banned substances……. Does that mean they can take whatever drugs/roids/etc. that they feel like in Minny??? Would it be fair to say that the NFL probably suspended testing for banned substances in Minnesota because it wouldn’t matter anyway??? That team playing the Saints could have been in a roid-rage and what????…… Well nothing….. it’d have to be appealed and that would take years!!! Minnesota law says…… they can do what they want. And I’m not even going into the players driving around at 105 MPH in 55′s, using their vehicles as weapons.

  • Pete H

Anderson..I remember watching him pick off a pass with two casts on his arms.. Noble was a very solid LB that whole group was…Harris, Bennett, Holland…sorry iccy, didn’t see Hadl or Barty. I agree with the ooportunity cost. Maybe Rich Cambell should be on there. I tried to go with high expectation guys, but also chose a couple who just got WAY WAY WAY too much playing time….i.e. Schroeder

  • Devil’s Advocate…

Hey roy j. Did you watch any of the Packer games???? A. Rodgers took a bunch of those hits also and didn’t get calls. Didn’t see some of you guys piping up about it then………. And if you watched any of the couple hundred other games objectively, you’d have noticed the inconsistancy all year. That’s the officiating grip I’ve had all year!!!!! DECIDE WHAT’S A PENALTY AND CALL IT CONSISTANTLY ALL YEAR!!! Game to game, everything gets called differently. Hell, I’d be happy if they did a shitty job calling every game as long as they call every game shitty!!! At least there’d be some consistancy!!!!

  • Steve Cheez

I remember John Anderson filling in for kicker once or twice. It was either because Birney was so god-awful or Marcol was off on a bender.

  • Steve Cheez

If you’re talking opportunity cost, how ’bout Bruce Clark? High 1st-rounder, fled to Canada rather than play NT for the Pack.

  • Pete H

did he flee? I thought they traded him to the Saints for some other pick that they eventually fucked up

  • iccyfan

Steve Cheez Says: “Marcol was off on a bender.”

Easy on Chester; he’ll forever have my gratitude for the TD he scored to beat the Bears on a blocked FG!

I’ve always had a real fan soft-spot for the guys who came from small schools so I’ll throw a couple of them out – Marcol from Hillsdale College, Jeff Query from Milliken and Rich McGeorge from Elon…

  • Steve Cheez

I didn’t say I had anything against him for it…

I agree, probably one of the top 5 plays in GBP history.
