Super Bowl Blog (2nd half anyway)

Well, my pregame prediction was Colts 27, Saints 17, so far we are on pace for such a low scoring game. Some amazing bad play calling here in the last three minutes. Saints should have kicked the field goal on their first chance and the Colts should have tried to score with a minute-and-a-half left in the half and Peyton Manning at quarterback.

So far the game has been pretty boring. I have to believe the Packers could beat either one of these teams. I hope that is what the Packers’ players are thinking at this time too.

7:20 PM: The Who kicked ass!

7:30 PM:  Damn! There goes my bet! Gutsy call to try the onside kick and the Colts were caught hook, line and sinker.

7:53 PM:  At least we are getting a game now. If Manning wants to separate himself from the other one Super Bowl winners and proclaim himself the best ever he needs to win this one.

8:02 PM:  That was a gutsy call!

8:06 PM:  The Colts go for it from midfield but don’t go for it from the 34 and miss a 51-yard field goal. My Colts bet is done but the under is a lock.

8:21 PM:  Well, I didn’t want the Saints to win but unlike last year I can embrace the winner if it is the Saints. I hate the Steelers and and I love the Cardinals so in that game I was totally rooting for one team. This game I wanted the Colts to win but am fine if the Saints win. What a great story it would be.

8:56 PM:  Now I can really embrace the Saints as that pick-six put a cool 100 in my pocket. All in all a good day for the NFL. I couldn’t be happier for Drew Brees and the city of New Orleans. No matter what you allegiance is it was a good day for the NFL. The Saints did a great deal for the league today.

Before I take off on vacation in a week I will have my take on the Packers’ free agents and who might be available. After that it is a week in sunny FLA – hopefully it warms up by the time I get there.

I’m starting to believe Aaron Rodgers is better than Brees. Brees has not impressed me in any of his playoff games. I think Rodgers would be doing better now. Well, if Thompson can fix the holes, we may have a real shot next year.

    4 and Goal for Colts……

    No good

    Saints are winning the Superbowl!!!!!!

  3. Rick says:

    Game is now over

I missed the final score on the game by 1 point.
My neighbor will the $215 pot with a perfect prediction.

No hard feelings, that was a great game to watch.
I won the chili cook off at halftime.
Time to put the kids to bed in a few.

My vote for MVP would actually not be Brees though everything he did should and will win it. My vote would be for Pierre Thomas. He ran through so many tackles it kept the Saints from becoming one dimensional.

  4. Mark says:

Once again I’m glad I don’t bet, I thought the Colts would win. Congratulations to the Saints for a great game.

Awesome win for the Saints! Drew Brees is just too cool to be true – love the fact the Chargers have bumbled away opportunity after opportunity by dumping him for that hothead Phillip Rivers. Second-chance redemption stories are always fun – doesn’t get much better than New Orleans and their motley crew of street FA’s (Pierre Thomas), late-round picks (Marcus Colston) and cast-offs (Brees, Shockey, etc.). Love it, especially since this result will gnaw at the guts of Viking fans…

  6. Gbpfan says:

I was cheering for the Saints the whole game. I mean, you’ve got to have an NFC win, and it’s just so much better than a same old same old win for the Colts.

By the way, I noticed this site had put my blog in your link list, and I’m sure that’s getting me a ton of traffic, so I just wanted to say Thanks for doing that.

    Go Pack Go!

  7. Nick says:

For all of those who called Brett Favre a big game choker and Peyton Manning the GOAT of the NFL, I think this game just proves that it is not so easy to play the perfect game in the big game. In fact, its not so easy to NOT throw the big pick late in the game. But that being said this game does not diminish to a great extent my opinion that Manning is one of the top 5 if not the best QB of all time. Nor should the Brett’s playoff failures diminish his career as one of the all-time greats.

Last I checked Manning has won as many SBs as Favre, Steve Young, Phil Simms, and Kurt Warner, who have all won as many as Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Joe Namath, Ken Stabler, Mark Rypien, Doug Williams, Jeff Hostetler, and Eli Manning. So as I don’t want to hear the haters always talking about Brett’s playoff losses while disregarding his hundreds of great games and thousands of great plays throughout his career.

And can all of you wrap your heads around this, I cannot wait for next year because we have another great QB who I am a huge fan of (while still loving Favre and what he did for us) who can take us back to the top. But even if Rodgers wins only 1 SB or even none, I would take another Favre career over just about any of the other 1 SB victory QBs. SB victories is one of the most overrated and overstated stat when it comes to overall QB play because so much comes into play in order to win the SB. (And despite today’s game Manning will go down as a better QB then Brees when all is said and done.)

Well it was a great SB. Cannot wait for next year! Go Pack!

  8. Scot says:

Rick, I agree that Pierre Thomas should’ve been the MVP. Brees did his job, but it wasn’t mind-blowing as to what he did. Pierre had some pretty awesome runs in there. Oh well. Now Mannining knows how Favre and Brady felt when they lost their first Superbowls. Pretty humbling.

  9. Rocky70 says:

Have seen D. Brees in a couple of interviews since the SB ……….. Diverts all attention & credit to his teammates, fans & family ……….. A real class act …….. Maybe BF needs to watch a few of his interviews to learn how …………

Nick Says: “For all of those who called Brett Favre a big game choker”

I didn’t read another word after this preface. He hasn’t been a Packer for two years and by all reports he’s happier as a Viking than he ever was as a Packer. Enough said, until such time as the Packer organization puts him in the ring of honor, assuming he doesn’t decline the invitation…

  11. Rocky70 says:

Sorry Nick but ……. Most fans want to win the SB as do most teams ……… You can spin, spin & spin all you need to justify the “Great Ones’ career ……….. But he will always be known as a HOF QB who choked in too many playoff games ……. This has nothing to do with any kind of ‘hate’ as you put it ………. It just “da facts”.

  12. Deek says:

The big winner is Scott Green! He refereed the SB after the NFL caught him cheating in the NFC play-off game in AZ. (By assessing a $5,000 fine for helmet to helmet to AJ and NOT called by Scott Green.)

Makes me feel real good about next year.

  13. roy jamison says:

Gotta wonder if Reggie Wayne and Freeney were at full strength if this game might have had a different ending. But that’s not taking anything away from the Saints, who made the kicks any team would love to see. Brees had a nearly perfect game throwing. And you also have a few questionable play calls which makes it fun. If the Pack gets a little more defense and maintainis their strengths on offense, they got a chance to lift Vince’s trophy next year.

  14. Rick says:

Wayne was a little light on the hook with his bad knee but the DB recognized the play and just flat out jumped it.

Freeney impressed the heck out of me. He played very well into the third quarter with the ankle injury. It was getting to him by the end but he still was fairly quick and a defensive threat in the game.

  15. Rick says:

As a FA Darren Sharper is available from the Saints. I do not think we can afford to play in his pool as the Saints and many other teams would be looking to have such a qualified Safety and checkbooks to match.

“But he will always be known as a HOF QB who choked in too many playoff games ……. ”

What a blind idiot you are.

Like Manning? Like Marino? Like Young? Their combined SB records add up to two. Manning choked last night, then, huh? Brady must be the better the QB, he’s the one that’s got three. If you believe that, I’ll give you a way to private message me, as I have shit for sale.

You know, magic beans, unicorns, mermaids, regular shit for a reasonable price.

By your way of reckoning, Dexter Manley was a better defensive end than Reggie White, as DM got two SB rings to RW’s one. (Although DM got one in a coked out haze and had to pawn his ring.)

You keep taking Aikman, Bradshaw and Montana, since they won all the SB’s by themselves. No team around them, they just did it all on their own.

AR’s playoff record is 0-1. He must suck. I was calling the Manning pick last night 5 minutes before it happened. Not because he sucks, but I knew he was playing from behind. Shit happens. (It helps when you have a coach with balls as big as grapefruit.)

Manning is a great QB, but if had been BF to throw the big game loser you’d be on here claiming it was in his DNA. Everybody else gets a pass.

Thanks for proving again you are the biggest idiot on the site!

  17. Larry says:

Thought I’d mention that on the Manning pick…Phil Sims said he wouldn’t blitz and put everyone in coverage. N.O. blitzed and got the pick with a great CB play AND pressure on Manning. In this league..to hell with an extra back…blitz baby blitz!!

  18. iccyfan says:

Context, PB – it’s all about the context! Manning’s costly INT came as he attempted to rally his team from behind; he didn’t “force” anything and Wayne ran a horrid route. Your hero’s pair of costly NFC title game INT’s came while his team held the advantage and both were universally criticized as unnecessary forced throws. Have any of the QB’s you cited ended three consecutive playoff runs (Jets were “win & in”) with a pick?

Two years removed and you’re still defending him – why?

  19. Rick says:

This Superbowl was maybe the taste of the future in NFL games.

It did show that the league ideas from 10-30 years ago for coaching and executing gameplans are applying less and less. With the QB and WR friendly rules a new, more go for it style of play is taking place. It does lead to some interesting games.

  20. Mark says:

Larry, Sims was right the first time. With one on one coverage and no deep safety Wayne should have been able to beat the coverage. No tipped ball, no throwing over the middle into traffic, no pressure, that was an ugly play. The DB knew the route and expected it, two plays earlier they ran the same one. He never gave any thought to Wayne going deep or a pump fake.

  21. Mark says:

Iccy, if you want to put the game losing picks into context. In one you have a young QB at the top of his profession on an ideal neutral field who hasn’t been body slammed even once. Of course you don’t have to be rational if you don’t want to. Both QB’s did the best they could and it really doesn’t affect the Pack in any case. Just try to be happy to be happy neither one plays for us, if you can, and we won’t have to be subjected to this nonsense anymore.

  22. Dan says:

I tip my hat to the Saints.

Hopefully TT was watching when Brees was crediting the Saints management for using free agency to turn around their organization and the city of New Orleans.

  23. iccyfan says:

You slay me Mark – seriously, you just kill me! I’m irrational because I don’t support the Viking QB – that’s rich…

  24. Mark says:

It’s irrational to go on and on about this stuff. It’s the Viking’s problem. I remember a QB we had years ago who could pick up a couple of yards running if he had to, not as good as an Elway or #12. But that guy is long gone.

  25. Rocky70 says:

Sorry PB ……….. You’re wrong again ……….. In my post I was talking only about BF ……….. Why you continue to drag other QBs into the conversation is baffling ………. The truth is still simple for the majority of football fans ………. ” BF will always be known as a HOF QB who choked in too many playoff games. ” ……….. Get used to it ……….. This is his legacy along with his personal & emotional deficiencies ………..

Only the ‘die-hard’ ballwashers (like yourself) are still trying to sugarcoat BF’s career & legacy ……….. Too bad ………. Your inability to realize the truth based on a long list of ‘facts’ reduces the credibility of anything you post here ………. This is nothing new ……… Your posting knowledge & credibility has always been suspect ……..

  26. Larry says:

Mark, I guess we agree to disagree…although the route was the same the formation was different with the intent of getting a different coverage. Wayne certainly did not shield the defender at all…but as the rush closed in Manning had to throw it somewhere. In my view it was the pressure to throw that dictated the throw. Wayne was the closest…and perhaps the most open of the receivers given Manning could not take a sack and had only a moment left.

The league is set up to allow elite QB’s to complete 70% of their passes IF GIVEN TIME. I firmly believe that shortening the time allows the defense the chance to cause an errant throw or poor decision.

I can point to the GB/Pitt or GB/ARI games and even to NO/ARI game. QB pressure was absent in all (for the most part) and passing yards were huge. Pressure on the QB is the key. Lastly, I’ll bet that the team that leads in sacks each year NEARLY ALWAYS makes the playoff’s…I haven’t researched it but I don’t believe you’ll find many exceptions.

  27. Mark says:

Larry, I think it was a bad play call. Manning wasn’t under that much pressure. How many times have you seen Roethlisbergeror and other QB’s throw after contact. He was drifting left anyhow, no one touched him. He had a clear view of the play when Wayne failed to cut back and the play already took too much time for a down and in. He could have gone on 4th down so he wasn’t desperate.

  28. iccyfan says:

Mark – You’re still killing me! At 6:55 yesterday the SB loss clinching interception was Reggie Wayne’s fault. You thought about it for awhile and by 7:24, evidently because you wanted to compare Favre’s season ending pick to Manning’s, you decided it was Manning’s fault. Today it’s the coaching staff but neither Manning nor Wayne executed properly, plus Manning should have taken a hit (like Roethlisbergeror) even though he wasn’t under pressure. This after you tell me to “try to be happy (to be happy) that Manning (or Favre) doesn’t play for us” so we don’t have to be subjected to nonsense!?! In a Yogi Berra kind of way, you rule man, you rule!!!

Larry – I couldn’t agree with you more in regards to “bringing the heat” versus “sitting back in coverage”. Nobody has described the Saint defense as great, but Gregg Williams created turnover situations with aggressiveness. The Saints shuffled a herd of defensive backs through the rotation this season and for the most part, got away with it. It could work for us as well…

  29. Mark says:

Iccy, the point was Manning wasn’t close to being hit and could see that Wayne couldn’t get position if he took another moment. A pump fake would have cleared the DB out. Manning was smart enough to know it was a blitz and rushed his throw. The point I made is he didn’t have to. He could have also grounded the ball because he still had 4th down. #12 is criticized for holding the ball too long but he doesn’t throw that pass.
