Williams and Bigby need a brain scan

Johnny Jolly may be stupid but he ain’t dumb, he at least knows the difference between $2.5 million and $500,000, even if he might never see a dime of it. What Atari Bigby and Tramon Williams are thinking is beyond me. Williams is likely to have his tender cut from $3.1 million to $580 grand. If it is true that Williams didn’t sign his tender by the deadline yesterday he should sign up for the next edition of “Dumb and Dumber.”

Bigby would be the dumb half of that duo. He is only giving up a few grand but probably has already lost his starting spot in the secondary which would have been tenuous even if he was present at the OTAs. If Williams thinks the Packers are going to open the vault for a player who was a starter by injury for less than a full season and played average at best he is either getting bad advice or is on drugs. If Williams or Bigby never step foot in Lambeau again the Packers will no worse for the wear, that is for sure.

I will admit Williams has some upside, but he is 27 years old still is not a proven entity. He has shown signs but at that age you wonder if he can get any better. There aren’t too many guys like Charles Woodson out there, or even Al Harris for that matter. Of all the people who need the OTAs and minicamp Williams probably needed it the most considering Harris might not be ready for the opener. If Williams would have performed at a high level Harris may never have got his job back. Now I think Harris will be back in the lineup sooner rather than later as the Packers no longer have the luxury to put him the PUP list to start the season.

It is definitely not business as usual in the NFL this offseason due to the impending work stoppage following the season. The players have much more to lose and the sooner they realize it the sooner things can return to normal. The NFLPA and the player’s agents are acting like they hold all the cards when the best they have is a pair of ducks.

The Packers close out the offseason program with a mini-camp June 21-23 then don’t resume until July 30. The absence of Bigby and Williams will surely be a hot topic. And with Jolly not being around for OTAs it will be interesting to see what kind of shape he is in or if he even shows up. Enjoy the next eight days because that’s all we get until July 30.

They did have brain scans; they came back negative.

  • Steve Cheez

How much codeine do you suppose $2.5MM will get you?

  • FANNOWINPHX

I’m more interested in knowing how much Dr Pepper you have to have for $2.5mil in codeine.

  • Mike from Arizona

What planet are these guys on? With the economy in a depth recession, half the NFL teams will need to do some belt tighting. I agree as well that the Players and the Union have very little leverage in the near term. Lack of Revenue and TV deals will effect most Professional Sports teams for the next 5 years and maybe more. As for Williams – 3.1 million to a back up and only starter for a few games. Do not take it, hold out for a new contract (5 years @ 25 million, $7 guaranteed) Get real. The Packers don’t need this cancer. Ted, find a (D Sharper like) replacement.

  • Mel e Mel

Williams has leverage in this situation. Please watch the AZ Pitt and MN tape. Who knows what Harris has left , and the rest of the corners have no experience. There will be a work stoppage so I believe Tramon is getting bad advice. The Pack has one corner under 30 with experience. Tramon is a starter, I just dont see the love machine (Underwood) beating him out. Mike just so you know even in the event of a work stoppage the NFL still gets its TV money. The recession only affects regular people. The NFL couldnt care less about a recession. Otherwise they would have fixed the CBA. Any NFL belt tigening is posturing for the CBA. Owners are building multi-billion dollar stadiums in NYC and Dallas. Either way the fans are screwed

  • iccyfan

I don’t dislike Atari Bigby but I’m strangely unaffected by his “hold-out”; he’s a “nice” player when available but he’s never evoked memories of Leroy Butler. With Morgan Burnett (albeit a FS) drafted and Will Blackmon moved, I’d submit the Packers are preparing for life without Atari.

Tramon Williams may not be a world-beater but he’s serviceable in a key position. I hate that he’s leveraging a couple of “injury starts” – guess Ted & Mike will have to decide if Lee and Underwood are capable of playing as well or better. Do they fear the prospect of Jarrett Bush and Josh Bell as much as we fans do?

  • Rick

Bigby- He wants a good contract with signing bonus and won’t practice until he has it. If he plays and gets hurt during OTAs or training camp the bonus is the only money he is guaranteed (the tender is not guaranteed). Also if he gets hurt his replacement may already be on the team and he misses out on the money next year coming off an injury since we won’t need him and the rest of the league won’t sign him for much fresh off of an injury. He has what little leverage he has right now. If we cut him and he signs elsewhere, he wins. If we give him a new contract and money, he wins. If he waits and we chop his tender down to 110% then TT looks like a douche to the players, he wins.

Williams- Very similar situation. Get hurt and lose money. You know the Packers are thin with quality depth at your position and you showed flashes of what you could do like Harris did with the Eagles.

He is getting his money right now while he has a little leverage to do so. Grant did the same thing.

TT needs to take Williams out to the Packers fan tailgate and show him the love of the community, smooch his ear a little and show him that the organization wants him to play his career here, and work an easy to hit incentive contract with him so if he starts and plays well, especially if Pro Bowl nominee, he gets bank. He is one of the better second tier CB out there and we have him as a RFA. Lets get the deal done.

  • Packer’s Advocate

Bigby’s had some injury issues and Williams has had some PI penalty issues. Both have little question marks that make putting together a deal slightly risky. Both are good players though, so both sides need to work together and get a deal done that protects both sides a little bit. They’ve put their time in, they desevre a DECENT deal if they’re on the last year of their old contracts. The Packers need be covered should Bigby’s injury problems never go away and the refs give Williams a rep and go after him big time. Speaking of the refs……………. SCARY!!!! I can think of so many times last year of poor calls. They’re throwing flags for things they don’t even see, just assumed happened. One of my favorites from last year is the blocking below the waist call, called against Poppinga of the kick coverage team. Slipped, fell down and slid about 5 yards into a guy and as the tackling team he was called for the blocking penalty. And don’t even get me started on the 1st Bear game where the ref gave a 1st down for an illegal contact on Harris, 1/2 a yard past the 5 yds. on a 3rd and 23 play. What a GIFT especially since it was at 4 1/2 yards and the Bears were in illegal formation. If I were MM, I’d have a segment of summer camp called “first downs from the refs”. If a team studies the refs, they’ll see lots of ways to use them to their advantage. Out of bounds hits is a good place to work this year. As the RB, when your running along the sideline, just set your guy up to keep him coming at ya and at the last second get those two feet out before the tackler can let up or tackle you. The refs are calling that tight. GIFT……….. 15 yards!!!

  • Larry

Bigby wouldn’t be missed unless the injury bug hits the safety position. Williams is in the catbird seat like Rick says. TT going to miss not drafting a CB unless he warms to a FA castoff.

  • Packer’s Advocate

It may be past time they redesigned the uniformed to get rid of the face mask some how. Anther step needed is giving the coaches about 3 more red flags and let them challenge any call. Would the NFL be against having a game that allows poor calls to be corrected vs. a little longer game?? I’m fine w/a longer game. I’m sure most people are.

  • Packer’s Advocate

Hey Rick, thought I saw on TV that Parrish Cox was drafted 5th round. That’s the guy you mentioned might be a good pick for the Packers, right???? You had him a little higher too, I thought. 2nd/3rd??? What happened????

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

Williams signed his tender – that’s a start.

  • Mel e Mel

Ahh now the drama ensues, will the rookie Burnett beat out Bigby? That would be interesting. Or maybe one reason they moved Blackmon over is because they are preparing to remove Bigby anyway.

  • Reid

Just let Bigby play a couple of games, he’ll be out with an injury and it won’t matter.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Kudos to TT for hanging tough and getting the last veteran we need signed. Bigby would be good insurance(as would more competition at backup QB) but his replacement is in the clubhouse. My remaining wish list is for a punter and returner with NFL ability. Something we can get done with minor trades or the waiver wire. The pass rush we need I fully expect to come from better D-line and DB play and schemes.

  • Packer’s Advocate

Or maybe it should be “what do you think happened, Rick???” You had me sold on that Cox kid. Speed, CB, kick returner…….. all sounded about right.

  • donno

    i agree a.j. spot on.

  • iccyfan

Reading thru the articles on the main page, you can’t help but be impressed with the “throw-back” attitudes of Nick Collins and Ryan Pickett. To paraphrase simply, “We’re just here to play ball, help the team wherever we can and let the business end take care of itself.” TT should pair these two up and send them on road trips during the offseason to visit the RFA & UFA players.

Note: I am a dum@ss, having made non-complimentary comments about Nick Collins last offseason, saying he should be thrilled with his tag and excited to play for $3.2M or whatever it called for – safeties weren’t worth any more than that and easy to find. If you read this blog, Nick, I was wrong and I’m sorry! You are exactly the type of player to represent our organization well….

  • Packer’s Advocate

Iccy, $3.2 mil was fair money for Collins. It’s just not the garunteed money they like. He had a slow first three years and played well the last couple. He put two good years together and deserved his contract!!! But last year, he only had one good year, so I think he was a bit premature also.

  • iccyfan

Therein lies the reason for my apology to Nick Collins – he didn’t skip mini-camp or hold-out during training camp; he was present to learn the new defense and left his agent to work out the business side. I “understand” what Rick has now posted twice about “leverage” – just wish more players would follow the Collins and Pickett examples. I think most would agree that Bigby is replaceable – it’s a privilige to start on a championship contender and he needs to be involved with the OTA’s….

  • roy jamison

Bigby’s career in Green Bay is slowly coming to an end.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Bigby would be a great loss. He is the only one that will tear your head offl. The rest of the DBs may slide and glide, but you know you’ve been hit when he brings it.

  • Mel e Mel

Unfortunately Larry thats part of the problem. No safety really has the size to deliver linebacker shots and so the end up injured, see Polamalu and Bob Sanders.

  • Rick

@PA – Parrish Cox was late for curfew twice and pissed off the coach and was suspended from playing in the Cotton bowl game. My opine was he is a 2/3rd rounder and he is, but NFL teams were scared about his character because he left Ok State in the lurch just before their bowl game and he was caught driving on a suspended license a couple of months earlier. That charge was stupid because his old insurance company said he lapsed and was non insured and the state pucked his license. He actually had let it lapse because he had a different company. Immediately it was handled.

The frickin Broncos stole him in the 5th. I am sick that we passed on him. I like the Quarless (TE) pick and Newhouse (OG/C) in the 5th but I think Parrish (CB/KR/PR)would be what we want and we could send Bush and some others DBs packing.

Oh well. Now I hope he breaks a leg
    Frickin Bronco ;)

  • Rick

Atari Bigby is a small LB in a safety position. Mel e Mel is right those guys are great to have but they break down fast with those little bodies and big collisions.

  • Steve Cheez

@Rick- Love the bitterness! Keep up the vitriol.

  • iccyfan

Here’s a blurb from an NFL Combine review which might explain why PCox lasted until the fifth round – it wasn’t just the character issues:

    Players Whose Stock Went Down

    1. Joe Haden (Florida)
    2. Perrish Cox (Oklahoma State)
    40-Yard Dash (4.53) Bench Press (12) Broad Jump (9′07)
It’s really unfair that the easiest way to judge some of these players is by raw numbers alone, but that’s the easiest way to measure a player’s athleticism and Cox failed that test at the Combine. His performance at the bench and the broad jump weren’t impressive at all and his 40-yard was slower than expected. The tape showed a player uncomfortable with his surroundings; he looked stiff and a little lost at times. The former Cowboy was expected to go early in April but a good individual workout may not even be enough to overrule Cox’s bad performance at the Combine and a lack of elite production at Oklahoma State.

  • Rick

Cox only had average combine numbers. But on the field he is the football player I want. I saw him go toe to toe with the Oklahoma and Texas Jaugernuats in college and he took away receivers. In the Senior Bowl practices he did it again as well as showed his fluid movement in the return game.

But since we did not get him, and in honour of Steve Cheez, screw him.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Mel e Mel and Rick, right is right and you’re obviously both right. Hell, I can’t even compare him to Polamalu or Sanders (my Son’s favorite player) but I like him. I think he’s worth it to keep him if even for half the season when Burnett could probably step in.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Seems to me to be rather quiet this year (on this site) as to the desire to pick up Haynesworth. Am I wrong in that there was quite a bit of criticism of TT for not trying to pick him up last year here? Gosh, maybe he (TT) knows things we don’t.

  • http://www.cheeseheadhq.blogspot.com CHHQ

I know they’ve both displayed some questionable intelect, but thinking realistically, there’s really no one better right now. The secondary is the weakest unit of the team. Al Harris is coming back from a pretty bad injury, plus he’s getting old. Underwood is facing possible criminal assault charges (add him to the dumb list) There needs to be someone to start with Charles, and it had better not be Jarrett Bush.

    Go Pack Go!

  • Rick

LarryTex- Haynesworth would be unhappy with the Packers 3-4 defense NT position just like he is unhappy with the Redskins 3-4 defense NT position. A 4-3 team like the Jaguars should really look at burning a First and third or so for him and team him up with Kampman. That would be a great d-line

  • jonnyfootballhero

Too bad TT couldn’t look into his crystal ball when he picked Harrell and Jackson in 2007. Seems a lot of fans knew something that TT didn’t that year.

  • http://Orlando Mark

Not just fans jonny. The pundits called Harrell a reach even without his injury history. His own agent was surprised he went so early. To make matters worse TT got rid of Colin Cole and Corey Williams who had been productive for us to clear cap room and reps on the D-line. Between that and KGB breaking down we couldn’t field a 4-3 with the backups who were left.

  • iccyfan

This dead-end road goes nowhere and is pockmarked with potholes; why anyone would choose to drive it is beyond me…

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Right, iccy, goooood grief. I think we all agree that ’07 was probably the worst draft in Packer history. That might make an interesting conversation. I think only Crosby, Jones, and Bishop are the only ones salvageable (maybe Kuhn?). But then, I’ve never liked Jackson and I still think Harrell COULD surprise.

  • PackerPete

Kuhn wasn’t a Packer draft choice, do you mean Korey Hall?

Crosby has been the class of this class, none of the other picks has become a clear-cut starter and contributor.

The best of the rest would have to be James Jones, still a next-to-nothing contributor, and Brandon Jackson, see above comment.

If there ever was a pass issued for a draft, TT sure got one for this mess.

  • iccyfan

    PackerPete Says:
“If there ever was a pass issued for a draft, TT sure got one for this mess.”

I’d submit that multiple GM’s used their “free pass” on the 2007 NFL Draft, as three years in it’s not looking very good. This is the draft that gave us JaMarcus Russell, Gaines Adams and Ted Ginn, Jr. within the first nine picks…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_nfl_draft

Here it is ladies and gent’s – find me a RB better than Brandon Jackson after Ted traded down from #47. Would we rather have Brian Leonard???

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

You guys make me sick! The Packers are Super Bowl favorites and your bitching about Ted Thompson. Go fuck Brett Favre and be done with it. And go away from Packernet! I’m so sick of this shit. I guess you assholes won’t be happy until the Packers go undefeated. Find another site to visit because I’ve had enough. Don’t come back because I’m not updating anything anymore. Over and out.

  • jonnyfootballhero

I think Michael Bush would have been a better selection than Brandon Jackson. Well, that’s who I was hoping would be the pick anyway.

  • iccyfan

Admin Al – If for some reason it wasn’t obvious, I was defending Trader Ted’s 2007 draft by pointing out the whole draft generally sucked (all teams) and there weren’t any RB’s to be had at our original second round position (#47) or later. At least none who’ve done much to distinguish themselves yet after three years in the NFL.

Nice job LT – you restarted this TT garbage and got the site shut-down…

  • PackerPete

hey Al, can i lick your balls.

sayin a GM got a pass on a draft that didnt pan out doesnt mean anyone loves Brent Faver.

again, i want to lick your hairy balls and then move to your crusty asshole.

    i really love your site.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Wow, how the hell did it come to this? Doesn’t it just make more sense for those who don’t like the site to move to another? Lets man up here guys and try to make logical comment without the personality issue. Again, if you don’t like it here move on.

  • http://www.packernet.com admin

See you the end of July, maybe by then the pseudo fans will be long gone.

  • Rick

PackerPete- your second line was an okay observation but the rest is just gross.

  • jonnyfootballhero

I like this site. A lot. But if we can’t post our opinions here, what’s the point of having it. There isn’t a lot of new Packers topics to talk about this time of year, so it’s pretty likely that old arguments are going to be brought up and defended or refuted. We aren’t all going to agree on everything, but I figure as long as we’re somewhat civil toward eachother it was all right. (go f*** brett favre – not very civil) If there are rules about what can and can’t be talked about here, perhaps it should be posted.

  • PackerPete

nice editing Al, I expect that over at Packerchatters, not here.

simply delete next time you go off your meds.
