Packers-Browns Game Blog

7:02 PM:  A perfect night for football. Just get Rodgers in and out with getting hurt and let Matt Flynn and Graham Harrell stink up the place. Feels like a defensive battle looming if you ask me.

7:12 PM:  Good to see the defense picked up right where they left off last year – getting burned by veteran quarterback left and right. Hold ‘em to three.

7:14 PM:  7-0 Browns. The pitiful Browns go right down the field on the supposedly tough Packers’ defense. Thank God for three more preseason games. Rodgers better score and quickly to take that bitter taste out of my mouth.

7:20 PM:  Grant fumbles on the first play of the season?! Are you kidding me. I know this game means nothing and clearly the Packers want nothing to do with it either.

7:23 PM:  14-0 Browns. I think I’ll temper my Super Bowl talk for a while. Wow! Talk about not being ready to play a game.

7:34 PM:  Aaron Rodgers takes matters into his own hands and leads the Packers on an 80-yard touchdown drive. Six straight completions. Some pinpoint passing and a new quick release – Rodgers looks damn good!

7:40 PM:  Three-and-out for the Browns. That’s more like it. Tie it up and get the starters out of there!

7:48 PM:  14-all! Another great drive. This offense is going to be a beast to defend. So many weapons. Nice to see Greg Jennings making some plays again, not that he didn’t before, but he was a little quiet last year. Now we get to see the scrubs for three quarters.

7:57 PM:  Wow! The defense looks awful! 21-14 Browns.

7:58 PM:  Why is Rodgers still in the game? Playing with fire. Please be a three-and-out.

8:12 PM:  I don’t expect to see many first downs by the offense the rest of the way. Not unless Harrell lights it up in the second half.

8:29 PM:  If you ever needed proof that Matt Flynn has weak arm you just got it. A last play hail-mary that came up 20 yards short. Uncle Rico could have throw it farther, that is for sure!

Anyone have a link where we can watch on the internet. No coverage in central IL.

  • iccyfan

Al can’t be too upset if he’s referencing Napoleon Dynamite in his on-site reporting…

  • http://Orlando Mark

Ouch. Where’s the guy that says special teams don’t matter. Our own Rockhead. Exhibitions are for finding and ironing out problems. If we had won by 50 it would have been meaningless. This gives the coaches and GM something to chew on.

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

C’mon guys, lighten up for crying out loud. Anybody out there think CLE beats us regular season? Anybody out there think CLE are going to playoffs? Better still, anybody out there want to make a prediction that GB will NOT make the playoffs?

  • http://Orlando Mark

LT, no, no, no. But don’t tell me we don’t have work to do. And, I’m sure MM is going to take full advantage of every perceived screwup.

    • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Yep, even the pad level. I just think its too easy to dwell on third and fourth stringers’ mistakes. My gosh, AR was 12/13 with 10 or so straight and Flynn led a 70 some drive to score at the beginning of the 2nd half. MM will be a hell of a lot tougher on these guys now that they are, for the most part, NFL veterans now.

How many times do we have to see it before we realize its an issue? How many bad starts can the Packers have. Its an MM issue the Pack is not a well prepared team. The Packers are talented, but not disciplined. This will lead to getting beat by lesser teams. Remember Tampa ? Poor start vs. AZ last year. Now picking up where they left off.
Slocum is a joke. It was well known Shields couldnt catch a cold. Yet let him get out there and screw up. What type of “coaching” is going on with the special teams? They dont have do be all world, but at least have a clue.

  • Monty

Im glad they stunk up the place. Now maybe all this Super Bowl or bust talk will stop and we can get real about building a real football team that can take us to the SB. Our defense continues to suck, special teams continue to suck. No pass rush, linebackers who cant cover. Brady P needs to go, we need to trade for another OLB to rush. I like Mike Neal, he was a good choice. With no pass rush our secondary is gonna get burnt all day. I do not think the two punters we have trying out are what we need, especially when the weather gets cold. This was a good reality check for the whole team including the coaches. I wish they would stop rotating the OL and let them play one position period. Set them and leave them there. Every year they meddle and fuss with the OL the whole preseason then wonder why it hasnt gelled come opening day. Pick five already and let them play!! Like I have said, until they win at Philly on opening day and they beat the Farve led Vikings, Im not gonna jump on the McCarthy Super Bowl wagon. This was an eye opener for all, now can we fix it before we go to Philly??

  • Larry

Can anyone provide help on how to get either radio or TV of games on internet. I gave up after the first half finding only music (but good music).

Didn’t have any luck through the Packer radio network either…they must not stream the games. HELP!

    Did Harrell play????

  • Mel e Mel

A caveat to this game LT Joe Thomas of the Browns is one of the best there is, Brad Jones and Brady Poppinga are not going to beat him. Jake Delhomme did start a Super Bowl, even though that seems like eons ago. I would love to know what veteran QBs see that makes the Pack easy pickings. IF this happens with Charlie Whitehurst next week then there is a propblem. We owe Charlie Whitehurst a pounding next week because of the awful football his daddy put us through :-)

  • iccyfan

Interesting box score; ex-Packer prospects Evan Moore & Jake Allen came back to hurt us. Who’ve we got in the front office scouting TE talent? Give ‘em a raise – we let Moore go last season and still have more talent in camp than we can probably keep (at the TE position).

My beloved Iowa State Cyclones had a nice showing for the Brownies as well. Seneca Wallace threw a pair of TDs and ‘Tuba Rubin forced the Grant fumble. We need more Cyclones and fewer Hawkeyes…

I always liked David Whitehurst, at least when compared to the likes of Jerry Tagge and Randy Wright. Of course I didn’t mind seeing him go to the bench when Lynn Dickey arrived…

  • jimmyus333333

Um….the BROWNS??? The BROWNS??? We lost to the BROWNS??? I know it was the first preseason game, but the BROWNS??? They couldn’t even beat the Lions last year (http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2009112202/2009/REG11/browns@lions/recap)

….WTF?? We were also playing at home….. 4 fumbles? 6 Penalties?…..Look..we beat them 17-0 last preseason. So, are we a better team then last year?

    Start making your Superbowl plans….

    • http://Orlando Mark

jimmy, if anything can convince you how meaningless the exhibition games are it would be last years results.

      • jimmyus333333

I’m not going to let the TT fan-boys, butt-boys or whatever you want to call yourselves, get away with writing this stuff off so easily. We have TT’s team now. We gave up a realistic chance to go to the Superbowl in 2008 for realistic chance to being average in 2010.

What is the improvement over the issues we had last year???

In 1996 we beat New England in the first preseason game 24-7. 3 penalties, 2 fumbles, and only 1 turnover. We received 3 turnovers that game.

And New England had a much better team…players, coaches, ownership..then the Browns this year.

For us to just ‘compete’ with the Browns this year, under ANY circumstances, third team, injuries, ‘saving players’,…blah, blah, blah…I’m not going to turn a blind eye to mediocrity when it can so clearly kick me in the face. This is TT’/MMs money year.

I really, really, really want so much to be wrong about how this year is going to turn out…and after seeing this disaster last night….the only blessings are that there is next week.

        • Rocky70

Did I miss something? ……… Was the game last night the 1st of the regular season? …….. Or was it the 1st game of the “preseason”? …….. Some of you are hilarious ……. Or just plain ignorant ………. Take your choice.

  • Sammy

Maybe we lose all of the preseason this year and win the SB instead of looking great in the preseason and chocking in the playoffs.

  • Jack in Columbus

Six things looked very familiar last night: (1) Our defense cannot put any pressure on a QB with only three rushing, (2) we do not blitz effectively, (3) when we blitz, we are very vulerable to TE and FB dump passes, (4) our special teams cannot avoid or shed blacks while running downfield to cover punts or kick-offs, (5) AJ Hawk cannot even cover slow-moving receivers, (6) our O line cannot block for the run with any consistency.

It is an open question as to whether this team can correct anyh or most of these issues, but I trust all that Super Bowl bound chatter is over for th etime being. Unless our money players on O can all stay healthy this season and the O puts up 42 points a game, we’re likely going to more than a couple games.

  • Jack in Columbus

I should have added a seventh: (7) our run D must still be vacationing with the Obamas.

  • Mel e Mel

Cleveland greatly improved at the end of last season. Their D was able to stop the Pittsburgh. We all know Holmgren isnt going to allow B.S. up there. The pass defense looks like the Ray Rhodes era or even worse. Something is up Favre,Warner,Big Ben, now Delhomme all seem like they had the gameplan straight from Capers. If the dont slow down Hasseback next week, well

Allen Babre and Havner with terrible penalties. When will it end?

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Well, MeM, Jack, J–3–, and Monty; doom, no chance, they stink, can’t blitz, no pressure, mediocre, disaster, can’t cover, can’t block, O-line can’t block either. Did I cover everything?
On the other hand; an All-Pro QB, 4+1 deep in receivers, a TE that safeties can’t handle, new upgraded talent on the OL, Capers, Woodson, Collins, Matthews, Barnett, Pickett, Jenkins, Raji, and for good measure, what were the O and D stats last year? Last yrs kids w/ playoff experience and a couple of Rooks that just might start this year like Matthews last.
Hmmm, I’d say were in pretty good shape; but then most of the “experts” (other than those on this blog or mentioned above) think so too. Lets see, who are most of them picking for the Div title this year, I forget.

    • Rocky70

My educated guess is that if AR, GJ, Finley, DD, Woody, Barnett, BJ, etc. etc. would have played 60 minutes ……… The final would have been more like 50+ for the Pack & alot less for the Brownies …….. Jake would have thrown his 3 or 4 INTs & GB would have won in a cakewalk ………….. It’s not difficult to figure out if one dismisses their fallible emotions.

  • Jack in Columbus

LarryTex – No doubt we would have “won” that scrimmage if the officials did not apply axel grease to the game balls the Packers were using. But if you think the D that played last night will be stopping solid offenses this season or that the Special teams that played will not give up lots of huge returns by mediocre punt and kick returners … well, then they should stick your photo next to “optimist” in the dictionary. Also, I like our O, too, except for the fumbles, penalties and “bad runs”. But they all will probably not be active at season’s end.

    • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

In all seriousness we had to focus on three things in the pre because of the success of the O and D overall last year. STs had to change the philosophy on coverage from knocking the guy down in front of you and letting “the other guy” make the tackle to make the friggin tackle. On the runbacks we had to discipline ourselves to stop hitting people in the back; they’re working on it.
The OL had to solidify and settle in to one spot rather than OG/C/OT by commitee that we did the first half of last yr. – Done (other than LG). Finley, integral, from the get-go, Done.
The D needed more push on third – I say done, little d with the Raji and Pickett moves.
People seem to forget the purpose of the pre – to sort out these changes and see if they work, at the same time getting a good look at the newbies.
Hey, I am an optimist, and I liked a lot last night.

      • iccyfan

I am a glass half-full optimist. You, my sometimes ally in defending most things Ted, are a glass-overflowing whack-job with a 1000 mg / day Wellbutrin addiction! :) I hope I live to retirement age; evidently it never rains in College Station, TX, your puppy never grows up and flowers bloom year-round…

Disclaimer: All in jest – while there wasn’t that much to like about last night’s tilt, the sky isn’t falling either.

        • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Heh, heh, Iccy. Optmism comes from comparing a team like this to the 70s and 80s.

After spotting the Browns 14, the Pack did ok. Great offense but Capers needs to tweak defense. Of course these preseason games don’t mean much until the last one when guys are really fighting for a spot on the roster. Initially I was questioning Flynn’s game too, but I’d like to see him with the first squad.

  • Pierre

Good throwing QBs continue to exploit Caper’s defensive schemes. Defensive stats don’t mean too much when meaningful games take place. He needs to make some serious tweaks and wrinkles to adjust the defense to get a more effective pass rush. Special teams coach seems to be lacking the skills to train and execute successfully at this level; they still look mediocre to poor in coverage. Lastly, team discipline needs to be stepped up throughout the remainder of the preseason. They are just exhibition games at this point however teams are quickly learning the blueprint to attack the Packers; through the air. Time will tell if there is the coaching skill and talent to slow down this strategy and achieve a successful season.

  • Reid

THE KEY STAT FROM THE GAME – no injuries to meaningful players. If the starters get smoked in the next 2 pre-season games, then there might be cause for concern.

  • Rick

The Packers did not show a serious blitz in the whole game. We were just trying to get OLBs up to speed on coverage skills in a live game and see who could really do what. My gut says we may come out blitz heavy the next pre season game and see who has what when it comes to the blitz schemes.

Offensive looked pretty good and the backups weren’t bad either. Special Teams killed us in this preseason game. Shields needs to be the killer headhunter gunner he was in college NOT be a returner. The punter situation drives my nuts. We will have to see if one of them is servicable for the season. As a returner I am not sure if we have one until Blackmon comes back healthy. Woodson is probably the best on the team currently and we won’t risk him.
