Packer and Seahawks Game Blog

9:01 PM:  All I would like to see is more of the same from the offense and a little pass rush on defense. Just about time for kickoff.

9:08 PM:  Nice 3-and-out for the defense. No put 7 on the board.

9:09 PM:  Wow what a pass and catch by Rodgers and Jennings! All year baby!

9:12 PM:  It is almost too easy with all the weapons the Packers have on offense. 7-0 Packers in 5 plays.

9:17  PM:  Special teams continue to suck. Underwood getting burned. Collins burned for a touchdown when Hasselbeck had all day to throw. 7-7. Quick and easy for the Seahawks too.

9:31 PM:  Still no running game. What is up with that? We were never this bad.

9:36 PM:  Got to finish this drive off with a TD. Then the starters can take a seat.

9:37 PM:  Finley wide open – touchdown! 14-7 Packers. Rodgers is going to have a Tom Brady-type year I think. Maybe not 50 TD passes, but I could see him in the 40s.

9:49 PM:  Hasselbeck is lighting up the defense. Underwood again. Lee the play before. So much for the young corners coming of age.

9:53 PM:  11-yard touchdown run by Leon Washington and the game is tied again. Little or no resistance. Starting to get a little concerned.

9:57 PM:  There is a God! Matt Flynn just completed a pass downfield.

10:01 PM:  That is the best I’ve seen Flynn look this year. Got a field goal out of the drive anyway. 17-14 Packers.

10:14 PM:  Bad series of plays for Flynn and Co. this time.

10:22 PM:  Defense actually held, thanks to some penalties, but I’ll take it. Of course the Packers had to take a time-out on the punt. Special teams are getting worse, not better.

10:29 PM:  Great drive by the Packers here in the last two minutes of the half. Flynn’s best showing as a Packer, same for Brandon Jackson, who is running like a beast. Started at the one and are out to the 45.

10:35 PM:  False start ruins a chance for a 47-yard field goal. Breno might be playing his last game in green & gold. Wasted a roster spot for two years.

We’re ahead 7-0 and the stadium is quiet. Bush gets out of position and blocked and the return gives the Seahawks life. Between that and watching Bryan boom punts and drop one at the one makes me sick. Good job by Flynn and Jackson, nice blocking except for Giacomini. Chillar, Raji and Crosby look good. Finley, Jennings and #12 look great.

  • Mel E Mel

    giacomini = waiver wire

  • Doug R

If something happens to tausch or Clifton, we are screwed

  • Mel E Mel

No we have Bulaga and Lang, Babre and Breno need to be gone post haste.

  • Mel E Mel

Now the ST is worse than I have ever seen it going back to era of Bart Starr. Then the play of the game by Havner. Whitehurst like father like son.

  • Abraham25

Mike is to blame for keeping Slocum this is rediculous watching the mistake after mistake of special teams.

  • eric & dinnies

We want kuhhn and jackson combo HBs and q johnson leadin the way at FB all year. Perfect power and speed combination. It makes grant look like the one trick pony he is.

  • eric & dinnies

We need kuhn and jackson at HB all year with quinn leading the way at Fb. Perfect combo of power and speed. Kuhn is showing the one cut technique that a zone blocking scheme requires while jackson is playing the role of the speed, quick, finesse runner we drafted him to be. They are making grant look like a one trick pony. In this day in age running back by commitee is a needed part of an offense to keep defenses scared of the run game. Grant is an average verison of a 250 a year carry back. Thats not good enough to match the league standard set by commitees. Kuhn and Jackson complement each other so nicely, and with the crusher QJ leadin the way. they can pick up more than 2 yards a carry like grant.

  • Pierre

Havner, Kuhn, Nelson, Jackson, and Zombo all were quite impressive in this game. Shields makes up for his muff with the key interception; keep him learning the CB position and being gunner on ST. Defense seems to still be soft on the passing and will need to improve through the rest of the preseason. Hopefully will be better with more of the starters back on the field.

Well, Abraham, before we jump off the top deck into the parking lot lets look at the #s.
Got 11 and 12 on PRs, not bad. KOs were 4 in the EZ and 1 a TB. No punts or FGs blocked. Punt average 41 to their 45 not too good. SEA KO returns averaged 30 for 5 so I suspect a long one I am not aware of. FGs 2 for 2. I don’t know; were there a lot of penalties, like the beginning of last year I didn’t see, maybe? Considering that half the guys on the specials tonight are not going to make the final 53 I’d say it was at least tolerable. Keep the faith, boy.

  • http://Orlando Mark

LT, you had to see it. The ST’s except for Crosby were awful.

  • Monty

blah blah blah, sos, special teams terrible again what a surprise. It will be sore all year like two years ago when we couldnt stop the run in preseason. MM is to blame for keeping Slocum. There were better ST coaches available during the off season. Notice that JR (thats Jon Ryan as in OUR FORMER PUNTER) had a nice night…guess ole Mike Stock was wrong about him. That was another sucky ST coach, he just didnt want to take the time to train Ryan correctly, looks like someone in Seattle did!! Offense is Awesome, but as we have seen before, all offense no defense = losing football. Guess time will tell. Slocum needs to go like yesterday!!

    • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Well, you’re right, Monty; vanilla defense, lousy STs, MM, and all that other crap.
Oh, somewhere above, somebody forgot to mention, (6) D starters held out, no Driver (not that we needed him anyway), (5) LBs out. Ryan kicks 45 and our guys 40 (again, in tryout mode) and he’s what all-world in this game? No Defense? Indeed, have we lost any of the starters other than Bigby (perhaps an improvement there?) on the D. I thought they played pretty well last year given the turn-overs and stopping the run (I might add, the prime objective of any NFL team).

    A few comments
1st string offense looked great- Rodgers in mid-season form.
Finley greatly improved – Jennings and rest of receiving crew could see less coverage
WRs’ will even be better when Driver plays

Sam Shields – keep him away from football A muff waiting to happen

DB’s – realize not starters but they really suck

  • AATP

Last year we were singing praises of this team in the Pre-Season, they couldn’t lose and they were playing lights out. I like the approach this year. Let the guys that NEED to make this team play a bit more the first two games. I noticed that the Seahawks kept their Offensive starters in till the half while we pulled Rodgers and most of the starting offense after the first quarter. I also noticed they had quite a few of their Defensive starters still on the field in the third quarter while we were already beginning to throw our third stingers on the field. The Seahawks announcers were obviously one sided in their game calling but the Pack had sat a great number of starters out of the gate so a bunch of those ST guys were playing on the field and running STs, which they aren’t used to. This is the time to make mistakes – with a bunch of these guys gone in the next couple of weeks I could care less about the win/loss categories here and more about seeing who’s good enough to join our 53 man roster. Also, the Offense and Defense were pretty vanilla all night long and the Seahawks were throwing some of their gimmick plays at us. So I’m not too concerned yet. Let’s see what happens when all the starters are on the field – with some luck (not too many injuries this season) and some really good football play this team will compete with the best of them :)

    • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Also, AATP, consider this: We know Crosby has a strong leg and is capable of reaching the EZ every KO. We will have at least two more gunners on the roster this year to restrict run backs.
Does anybody really think this O is going to punt that much? I, for one, would be concentrating on the punt return game than anything else ST right now. Oh! I think thats what they’re doing.

    • http://Orlando Mark

Quite right AATP, but did you notice Bush on their 1st big return, he’s no rookie. Also I really like Q. Johnson in the run game at the end. He picked up the blitz better and caught a pass(also dropped one). I hope we can keep him on the field.

  • Special Teams Sammy

I changed my name until Slocum can get the special teams on track…pathetic. If we give the opponent the ball on the 40 every time, the lions will beat us. Good move to let that punter Ryan go. Special teams is not sexy, doesn’t get enough attention, and the way they rank success does not make sense. However, no Superbowl if we continue to score an F- on special teams. I would be happy with a C- now. No improvement from last year, in fact, it looks like a step back. However, it is only preseason and maybe we can get this worked out.

Love Rodgers, Finley, offense, etc……why do we still have J. Bush? Y’all have a good Sunday. Now let’s play some ‘effin football.

    • Rocky70

You have a revolving number of name changes ……… What’s one more?

  • http://jlworden1suddenlink.net LarryTex

Frankly, the lack of rush so far does not cause me concern; agreed they’re not showing much. Keep in mind even w/o many sacks we’ve had our share of INTs. Also, consider two kinds of sack: there are coverage sacks (we’re not there yet), and the bull rush w/ speed LBs. I think the pcs are on the roster and they’ll come from both sides.

  • AATP

I agree LT, we didn’t get to really see our total package out there on the field yet, I’m excited to see that on D but I’m also excited to know who will be our final ST packages and how that will finally look. My concerns are not as big as some of you on here only cause it seems like year in and year out we put so much emphasis on the pre-season only to forget there really isn’t anything to see in the pre-season accept players trying to make the team. We also know that the Packers will likely keep their hands close to their bodies this year going into the regular season. They made the mistake of showing a little too much last season in the pre-season to win games and then got bamboozled out of the gates in the regular season. I would like to see a little bit more of a raw bull rush from the DL but then again, we don’t have any of our real impact players out there at DB or LB so I’m actually a little excited that we’re playing our games close and not letting the other teams run away offensively… Some good things out there with some good players – I think Porter is done, he’s got nothing as far as RBs go in this system. Like that new look with Kuhn and QJ out there together, that could wear down a defense in a hurry with that much meat coming at ya all game.
