Around the NFL, player news often holds the key to identifying good wagering opportunities. In Green Bay, the Packers have a bit of good news that could have a major impact on the team’s upcoming week 8 game versus the Denver Broncos as well as the rest of the season. Wide receiver Davante Adams might rejoin the team after missing more than three games due to injury. When asked about his status after practice on Monday, he fell just short of guaranteeing he would be on the field.

At this point in the season, the Packers sit at 6-0, which is nothing short of good news for Packers fans. However, there is a troubling underlying story that indicates the Packers are not playing up to their potential and some of the blame has to be placed squarely on the shoulders of an offense that has become vulnerable and inconsistent due in large part to injuries to contributing players like Adams.

Case in point, the Packers scored an average of 32 PPG during its first three games with Adams on the field. Over the next three games with him sidelined by injury, the number dropped to 22.7 PPG. The issue at hand is the inability of Packers receivers to get open, which is causing QB Aaron Rodgers to hold the ball too long and take on too many hits and sacks. By the numbers, Rodgers completed almost 74% of his passes for 771 yards and 10 TDs with no interceptions and 3 sacks over the first three games. Since then, he has completed 63% of his passes for 720 yards and only 5 TDs with 2 interceptions and 8 sacks.

Of course, it’s not just Adam’s’ absence that has hurt the Packers offense. The running game has been fairly ineffective and the others receivers have also been a little banged up. It’s just that Adam’s’ value to the team is his speed and ability to get open, which allows Rodgers to release the ball quicker and establish more of a rhythm on offense. It’s that rhythm that has long been a hallmark of the offense led by Rodgers.

His return could be critical if the Packers have any designs on remaining undefeated as they head out to Denver to face the undefeated Broncos. Any sluggishness on offense could be capitalized on by a Denver defense that ranks #1 in the league for yards allowed per game at just over 281, and #2 in the league in scoring defense, allowing just 17.0 PPG. Of course, the Packers have the #1 ranked scoring defense at 16.8 PPG, which sets this game up as a real defensive battle where any points scored will be a valuable commodity. Adding to the intrigue is the fact Broncos QB Peyton Manning has had struggles of his own this season. He has passed for 1,524 yards with only 7 TDs and a whopping 10 interceptions, which is very un-Manning like.
