2011 Green Bay Packers Game Blackouts in the Twin Cities Metro / Western Wisconsin Regions

Per NFL rules, no game can be aired at the same time the home team is playing at home on another network.

The below is a listing of all Green Bay Packers games that will be blacked out in the Twin Cities metro / Western Wisconsin in 2011 per this rule.

Week 2: Sun, Sept 18 @ Carolina Panthers 12:00 pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX, at home]

Week 3 (maybe): Sun, Sept 25 @ Chicago Bears 3:15 pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX, at home] (explanation below)

Week 11: Sun, Nov 20 vs. Tampa Bay Bucaneers 12:00 pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on CBS, at home]

Week 13: Sun, Dec 4 @ New York Giants 3:15 pm on FOX [Vikings @ 3:05 on CBS, at home] (Vikings game moved to 12:00 pm)

Week 15: Sun, Dec 18 @ Kansas City Chiefs 12:00 pm FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX, at home]

Week 17: Sun, Jan 1 vs. Detroit Lions 12:00 pm FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX]

This year I’d strongly recommend to watch the games online via NFL Game Rewind.  I can’t tell if we’ll be able to see games live online this year or not, but you could with the preseason games so I’d assume that will also be the case with regular season games.  I bought the preseason pass and it was the best $20 (for all preason games) I ever spent on entertainment.

Good luck Twin Cities Packer fans, and GO PACK!

Super Bowl XLV Champions DVD Review

Thursday, March 31st, 2011
by Kevin Roth

Call it a case of my expectations being too high, but I am moderately disappointed with the “Super Bowl XLV Champions” DVD/Blu-Ray.  I have now watched it 3 times, and each time I have watched it I remembered more and more moments that I want to remember that were not captured on this NFL Films production.  I’ll be the first to admit that I expected way too much, wanting every great hit, catch, soundbite, and pleasant memory of the season to have been captured.  (I was especially hoping to see those couple of spectacular one-handed catches by Sam Shields and Donald Driver).  I know there was a lot to try and pack in.  But I really think the editors could have done better.  I very much wanted the magic of the Green Bay Packers 2010 season to carry over onto this program, and I feel it fell short.

Adversity, drama, not captured.

If the goal of this video was to capture a basic overview of the season and show clips only of the Packers, to depict them solely as champions destined for greatness, then they succeeded.  But that wasn’t the way it really went down.  I would have rather seen more of the adversity, showing the devastation of the losses the team endured, the injuries, and the strength of the opponents.  The 2010 Packers were not unstoppable, but they grew, gained experience, became motivated, and never gave up.  The Packers played some really good teams, and were able to win some very difficult games.  By the end of the season the Packers were close to unstoppable, but they really endured some hardships to get to that point.  That point was just not adequately captured, and neither was the emotion or the drama I expected.

Rise of the unknowns

When the 2010 Packers lost a key contributor, an unknown player stepped up.  Where were the small personal success stories of guys like Frank Zombo, Sam Shields, Howard Green, Charlie Peprah, or Eric Walden?  The brief mention of Matt Flynn’s decent game vs. the Patriots was forced and rushed in my opinion.

Improvements over 2009

Our special teams, albeit far from being “fixed” if you ask me, grew by leaps and bounds this season.  McCarthy’s quote of Masthay’s “finest punting performance he’d ever witnessed”, was glaringly not present.  And the Yin to Masthay’s Yang was Jarrett Bush, who became a specialist at downing the ball on the 1 yard line.  (And by the way Bush had an especially fine performance in the Super Bowl).  Mason Crosby rebounded from a terrible 2009 season.  Where was the commentary about growth on special teams?  Not in this film.  But also as I said, not all of the special teams woes have been addressed.  There was the kickoff return of Atlanta’s Eric Weems, and the embarrasing return during the Patriots game by the lineman Dan Connolly for 71 yards.  While it may sting a bit to see those types of plays again, they were still part of the season and were obstacles the Packers overcame.

Division Rivals

Also lacking was a feeling of how important particular games such as the games vs. Chicago and Minnesota were.  The video seems to go through game by game stating what happened in each as fact, not really stressing the significance.  If you recall, this year Aaron Rodgers overcame a pretty huge obstacle in beating his old “mentor” (if you can call him that – #4 was a mentor, albeit an unwilling one) for the first time, and he did it twice.  At the time the Packers played the Vikings in their first meeting in 2010, the Vikings were already not in a good way, and needed a win to re-energize them.  Instead, the Packers picked them apart and the result was the beginning of the end for the Vikings’ most troublesome season ever.  In the second meeting, the Packers so thoroughly defeated the Vikings in such an embarrasing fashion that they fired their coach, Brad Childress.  That my friends, was huge (especially for me, living in Viking territory).

And then we have Chicago.  I’m actually glad the first loss to Chicago went by fairly quickly, but the significance of that game was the Bears took the lead in the NFC North and we never got it back from them.  The second game “forgot” to mention the controversy of Jay Cutler taking himself out of the game.  The debate still goes on, and for that reason I feel like they deliberately took out any footage of Cutler’s “injury”.  Another interesting tidbit that was not explained during the NFC Championship was that allegedly the Halas trophy was to be presented in the locker room of the winning team regardless of the outcome.  If that doesn’t tell about how fierce of a rivalry this is I don’t know what does.

Green Bay Packers, “Coach Killers”

First Wade Philips, then Brad Childress.  And it could also be argued that the 49ers’ coach Singletary was also dismissed in part due to another devastating defeat by the Packers.  All 3 teams were beaten badly enough for those teams to unravel and eventually lose their coach.  Of course the Packers weren’t really the reason that those coaches were fired in and of themselves, but it’s a good story and was not mentioned.

Individual Accomplishments

No mention of pro bowl nominations, coaching award nominations, records broken, or other major milestones.  Boooo!

Special Features

I was really hoping for some fun special features like featurettes of “the Championship Belt”, Rodgers’ victory speech at the Return To Titletown (which was phenomenal by the way), or the Raji Dance.  The special features that were on the disc were fairly dry and uninteresting to me, perhaps with the exception of the Rodgers interview.

I know I’m being unfair and my expectations were too high, but I won’t be one of those jumping on the “this is the finest work produced by NFL Films to date” bandwagon.  I’ll admit I haven’t watched many NFL Films productions, and maybe this was their finest work.  But if that is true, that makes me sad.  I am not saying I hate this video.  I’ll watch it 100 times I’m sure.  I was merely hoping for more.

If Packers QBs Were Star Wars Characters

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

From Pete in Hudson, WI:

I was thinking about our favorite QBs and something dawned on me:

Bart Starr = Yoda.  The old pro, cool under pressure, almost serene in nature. Knows the force (football) better than anyone, former Jedi instructor (Packer’s coach). Now wrinkled and old.

Brett Favre = Darth Vader.  Started out great, but even then was reckless and on the edge. Killed a bunch of Sandpeople (Favre disappointed NY Jets Fans) before turning to the dark side (Vikings) after being seduced by a Sith Lord (Childress) who ultimately meets his doom at the hands of the Jedi/Rebellion (Packers). Vader was the one that actually destroyed him (Favre’s bad play caused him to be fired). Will some day end up next to Yoda in the row of glowing former Jedi (Packer’s Ring of Honor) after he is redeemed.

Aaron Rodgers = Luke Skywalker.  Started his training later than normal, but quickly became very powerful. Was instructed by Yoda (Bart Starr). Helped to destroy the Sith Lord (Fire Childress) but did not actually defeat him directly in the end. The Jedi/Rebellion (Packers) won the ultimate victory by destroying the 2nd death star (Won SB XLV). Beginning of a new era of galactic peace and prosperity (New Packer’s Dynasty).

Misery in Minnesota

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

From Gale H, Packer fan in the Twin Cities:

Don’t know about you guys, but I’ve been enjoying football fan nirvana today, for sure.  I’m soaking this one in like I never did in ’96.  So many articles, videos and podcasts, so little time!

The next best thing to being in Green Bay has got to be living in the heart of enemy territory - getting to listen to all of the utterly defeated sour-puss Viking fans.  Today is for celebrating the win!  But, if you want some serious real entertainment, at some point you need to check out Paul Allen’s,  Dan “the common man” Cole’s and Dan Barreiro‘s radio shows today.   Along with the joy of the Packers Championship victory, I have some serious shadenfreude going on with the Vikings and their fans.  It’s just too good to not savor.  Not with all the history, recent and past.  Minnesota is in misery for sure.

Superbowl 31 was great in that we were finally back after 30 years.  But for me, this year has been probably the most gratifying for how so many ghosts of the past were erased.  The victories of this last year and now the Lombardi Trophy returning have absolutely erased some of the toughest losses and incidents over the last 40 years.

  • The Vikings were big back in the 70′s when Pat and I were kids.   I always remember the 5 or 6 kids who rooted for the Vikings that I just could not stand.  They were so arrogant and nasty with their comments about the Pack and we fans that stuck with the Pack.   It’s all gone!  The comment today from Dan Barreiro was, “They’ve [Packer fans] got everything.  We’ve got nothing!“  Witnessing the Vikings and Favre’s scheme fall twice to the Pack – to see total Viking embarrassment and literal destruction was just a part of the perfect season for me.
  • 4th and 26… Gone!  Pack defeated Philly twice and they move on in the playoffs.
  • 80′s Chicago and “The Fridge”…  Gone!  Defeated da Bears twice, once in the NFC Championship, with Raji on the fake up the middle, allowing Rodgers to run to the side.  ”The Freezer” then makes makes the Pick 6.
  • Losing to the Falcons in the playoffs, AT Lambeau years ago…  Gone!  We defeated them soundly on their own turf.
  • 90′s Cowboys…   Gone!  Waxed the Cowboys in embarrassing fashion.  Coach gets fired.  The Green Bay Packers go on to hoist the Lombardi Trophy inside Jerry Jones’  ”Death Star” – the functional equivalent of stealing the date he brought to his own dance.
  • Losing to the Giants in the 2007 Conference Championship game with Favre throwing a terrible interception….  Gone!   Flash ahead, Favre throws the same Championship-losing interception with the Vikings barely a year ago and the Pack beats the NFC rival Giants to the playoffs this year.

GO PACK!!!  The Lombardi Trophy is home!

Week 14: Sun, Dec 12 @ Detroit Lions *12:00 pm FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX, at home]
Week 17: Sun, Jan 2 Chicago Bears *12:00 pm FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX]

Solutions:

  • Get a Slingbox and set it up at your friend or relative’s house in good ol’ eastern WI.  Basically the slingbox streams your tv (cable, antenna, satellite, whatever you have) on the web, and you can log in and access it from anywhere.  This is what I’ve been doing, works pretty well if you have decent bandwidth at both the source and where you are watching from.
  • Get DirecTV w/ the NFL Sunday Ticket (cha ching!  expensive…)
  • Go to a bar that has the game on

Bars in the St Paul area I’d recommend:

Bring Green Back

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Whether or not the Packers draft a running back in this year’s draft, I don’t see any reason not to bring back Ahman Green.

We all know Green is not a long-term solution in Green Bay at running back, but I think last year he showed that he can still play and at a very high level.  His punishing style of running is what I’ve always loved to watch.  He makes DBs earn their tackles and often breaks loose because of that style.  Having Green is a great insurance policy, and I believe having him present also helps push Grant to perform better as the starter.

The Packers will surely pick up a RB somewhere in this year’s draft, but I very much doubt we’ll get a superstar, and current backup Brandon Jackson isn’t getting the job done.  Until our new draftee running back is broken in why not use a guy we know we can trust?  A veteran like Green will have a thing or two to show younger players at his position also to help them improve.

Green is the Packers’ all-time leading rusher and is a dependable, hard worker.  At his age, he does not demand a high salary at his position.  He loves Green Bay and has a great appreciation for the fans.  He doesn’t suck.  He knows the system.  He’s got a batman tattoo.  All good reasons to bring him back.

Vikings Better Than the Packers, For Now

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

After having been swept by the division rivals I think it is fairly clear that the Vikings are the better team in the division, for now.  However, from what I saw, the season is not over.

It hurts to have lost to our most reviled division foes, and that #4 stuck it to us pretty good, but it is not yet time to throw in the towel for the season.  That was a pretty close game, and if the Packers had played the first half like they did the second, the outcome might have been different.

Now, the Packers are 4-3 and have been swept by the Vikings, but so far in 2009 the Packers  have lost to only two teams, the Vikings and the Bengals, both of whom are turning out to be very fierce competitors. The more difficult part of the schedule is coming up, but I could realistically see us losing only 4 of the rest of the games (vs. Pittsburgh, Arizona, Dallas, and Baltimore), which puts the Packers at 9-7, which we’ve seen in the past could still possibly be good enough to get us into the playoffs.  Now, the question is, will the Packers improve enough over the next 9 games to be able to compete with the likes of our purple foes?  I think so.  Barring serious injury to one of our key players, I think that is very doable.  As we saw this past Sunday, we are not far off from being able to beat the Vikings already, and let’s face it, that is saying something.  As much as I hate to admit it, the Vikings are pretty damn good.

I predict if the Packers can limp into the playoffs and they happen to meet the Vikings for a third time this season, the Packers will have it in them to pull off the win next time around.  And in that situation #4 will likely have that sinking feeling that he might throw the game away when it counts (again).  This time around, I would welcome that.

Stay optimistic, Packer fans!  The world (season) has not yet come to an end!  We still have a pretty good team that has it in them to be great.

Packer Game Blackouts in the Twin Cities / Western Wisconsin Pt. 2

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Well, before I wrote the last blog post, I sent a request to Fox 9 in the Twin Cities for an explanation of the Packer game blackouts and a broadcast schedule of this year’s Packer games, and was pleasantly surprised to have gotten a reply.  I didn’t think the local network would have time for little old me, but they followed through.

Here is  their reply:

Minneapolis/St. Paul is the Vikings home market and there are NFL rules that dictate what games FOX 9 can broadcast.

Per NFL rules, no game can be aired at the same time the home team is playing at home on another network.

So FOX 9 cannot air any game when the Vikings are playing at home and the game is airing on CBS.

On Sundays 10/18 & 12/13, FOX 9 cannot air the Packers game even though the Vikings are on CBS.

They also attached a full schedule of all the NFL games that will be broadcast this year on FOX 9.

Here is the confirmed list of Packer games that will be blacked out in the Twin Cities in 2009:

  • Week 3: Sun 9/27/2009 @ St. Louis Rams 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX]
  • Week 6: Sun 10/18/2009 vs. Detroit Lions 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on CBS, but at home]
  • Week 7: Sun 10/25/2009 @ Cleveland Browns 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX]
  • Week 11: Sun 11/22/2009 vs. San Francisco 49ers 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX]
  • Week 14: Sun 12/13/2009 @ Chicago Bears 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on CBS, but at home]

There are a lot fewer blackouts than I was expecting, which is great.  And FOX doesn’t hate the Packers, which is also great :)

Thanks again, FOX 9.

Packer Game Blackouts in the Twin Cities / Western Wisconsin

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

As a Packers fan living in the Twin Cities, it is often frustrating when the Packer games are not on tv.  I usually end up going to a bar that has the game on, or finding a friend with DirecTV that will have the game on.  This year I solved my problems by purchasing a Slingbox (more on that later).

What is the most frustrating, is that last year I assumed a few times that the game would be on TV here because the Packers were not on at the same time as the Vikings or were on different networks and was disappointed to find that the games were STILL blacked out.  I have emailed the local FOX station a letter asking them to list for me which games will be aired, or at least what the restrictions are for Fox to air Packers games in the Vikings’ primary marketplace.  If I get a response I will be sure to update this article.  Update 10/2: FOX has written me back and I’ve posted an update.

Here is what I know:

  • Whenever the Packers play at the same time as the Vikings and they are both on FOX, the Vikings game is aired and not the Packers.
  • Week 2 was NOT blacked out.  Packers were at noon on CBS, Vikings were at noon on FOX.  I do not know if it works the other way around, though (Packers on FOX, Vikings on CBS at the same time).

Here is what I DO NOT know:

  • FOX might not be allowed to show the Packers in the Twin Cities metro area when the games are not nationally televised, even when the schedule doesn’t conflict with the Vikings.  Last year there was a game that fell into this scenario and FOX played a damn infomercial instead of the Packers.  I was not happy that day.

Here are the games that will certainly be blacked out, as they are to be aired on the same network (FOX) at the same time:

Week 3: Sun 9/27/2009 @ St. Louis Rams 12:00pm on FOX [was blacked out, both games on FOX at noon]
Week 7: Sun 10/25/2009 @ Cleveland Browns 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX]
Week 11: Sun 11/22/2009 vs. San Francisco 49ers 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX]

Here are all the POTENTIAL games that will be blacked out:

Week 6: Sun 10/18/2009 vs. Detroit Lions 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on CBS, so probably blacked out]
Week 9: Sun 11/8/2009 @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings Bye, but still might be blacked out]
Week 10: Sun 11/15/2009 vs. Dallas Cowboys 3:15pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon, but still might be blacked out]
Week 14: Sun 12/13/2009 @ Chicago Bears 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on CBS, but still might be blacked out]
Week 15: Sun 12/20/2009 @ Pittsburgh Steelers 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings @ 7:20 on NBC, but still might be blacked out]
Week 16: Sun 12/27/2009 vs. Seattle Seahawks 12:00pm on FOX [Vikings play Mon night, but still might be blacked out]
Week 17: Sun 1/3/2010 @ Arizona Cardinals 3:15pm on FOX [Vikings @ noon on FOX, but still might be blacked out]

Solutions:

  • Get a Slingbox and set it up at your friend or relative’s house in good ol’ eastern WI.  Basically the slingbox streams your tv (cable, antenna, satellite, whatever you have) on the web, and you can log in and access it from anywhere.  This is what I’ve been doing this year, works pretty well if you have decent bandwidth at both the source and where you are watching from.
  • Get DirecTV w/ the NFL Sunday Ticket (cha ching!  expensive…)
  • Go to a bar that has the game on

Tainted Legacy: The Death of a Hero

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Al has vowed not to use the “F” word anymore, so I’ll do it.  Everyone else has already said their piece on the issue already if they have an opinion, and this article probably will not offer anything more that what’s already been said by others on the topic.  That said, I do think yet another Favre opinion article won’t hurt anybody.

Along with the rest of the world, I bought into the hero worship of the the legendary Brett Favre.  He was marketed as the ultimate competitor, the simple guy who just loves football and doesn’t let any of the hype go to his head.

Well, the truth has come out and true character revealed.  The same guy who criticized Javon Walker for not honoring his contract has now pulled a Terrel Owens to get himself in position to play for the team of his choosing.  Favre appears to think that because of who he is, the rules do not apply and should be able to retire and unretire to play for whomever he wishes.

Sorry to tell you Brett, but not everyone thinks that way.  GM Ted Thompson made what I think is the right decision not to allow him to unretire and play for the Packers last season.  At that point I did still respect Favre a great deal, but the constant “will he or won’t he play” game year after year was getting really old.  I am sure Thompson was as sick of it as most people (if not more so) and finally said enough is enough.  Good for Ted, one big question answered and let’s move on.

Now Favre has manipulated his way out of his contract with the New York Jets by faking a second retirement and is free to play for whomever he wishes, just the way he wanted it.  It is clear now that Favre wants to be a Viking.  As a Packer fan this is the biggest slap in the face one could ever have expected from the man.  The Minnesota Vikings — the Packers’ biggest rival (and Favre’s for the past 17 years).  It hurts, and yes it does feel like a betrayal.

I remember after the 1997 super bowl loss when Holmgren left the Packers and went to Seattle to play GM and head coach, just like he wanted in Green Bay.  I remember how disappointing that was and how many people were so angry about his “betrayal”.  I didn’t personally feel that way but now I can certainly better understand how those people were feeling.

Remember just a few years ago when all was right with the world in Packerland?  We all wanted Favre to be a Packer until he retired, and then we’d build a shrine of his jersey and all hail him as the greatest football player to have ever played the game.  That dream is now long since over.

The truth is that regardless of Favre ever becomes a Viking or if he decides to hang it up for real this time, the damage has already been done.  Favre’s selfishness and huge ego has been revealed and there is no going back now.  My hero has died.  I have gone through 4 of the 5 stages of grief (minus acceptance).  The only difference between this situation and an actual death is that instead of my being able to grieve the loss and move on, Favre keeps coming back to haunt us.  It is so hard to move on from this though when it just won’t go away.

I am just completely exhausted with the whole ordeal.  My hope for the future at this point is for Favre to retire, and if that doesn’t happen I’d like to see two dominant performances by the Packers versus the Vikings this season, and maybe see Favre take a few shots from B.J. Raji as well (even if that is a bit juvenile).

I suppose this whole debacle has helped me learn a lesson.  There are no true role models in professional sports, and when you think you’ve found one they will disappoint you.  Professional athletes are just people like everyone else, and make mistakes just like everyone else.
