New look Packers ready to rock

The Green Bay Packers are coming off an offseason of turnover the likes we haven’t seen since the change in head coach from Mike Sherman to Mike McCarthy in 2006. With new offensive and defensive coordinators in Joe Philbin and Mike Pettine, respectively, a new quarterbacks coach, and a restructuring of the defensive staff, this is all different.

The Packers also signed free agent tight ends Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson. New general manager Brian Gutekunst is proving true to his word of leaving no stone unturned. That includes the Packers’ pursuit of Khalil Mack, who ended up going to the Bears, as we all know. All said and done, unlike last year when a trip to Energycasino was a far more enjoyable Sunday afternoon, this year’s Packers look to be contenders once again.

Of course, the biggest news is the return of Aaron Rodgers and his new six-year contract that could assure him of retiring a Packer. Coupled with the return of Philbin I think Rodgers is primed for a huge year if he can play 16 games. And playing 16 games now needs to be on the top of Rodgers’ priority list. Being able to extend plays is great, but if you are not playing it’s not great at all. I think we will see a new and improved Rodgers this year. Could easily be another MVP season.

And then there is the firing of Dom Capers and hiring of Pettine. This is for sure the move that will make or break McCarthy’s tenure as head coach. If the Packers can field a top ten defense, something Pettine has always done, the Packers will be extremely hard to beat. Kind of like 2010 when the Packers had a very good offense and a top five defense and won the Super Bowl. I not saying, just saying, a visit to book of ra for a little wager on the Packers might not be a bad thing.

I think the two coordinators are the key. Rodgers and Philbin had their best years together, and I am so impressed with Pettine since he took over the defense. This is a guy who had a meteoric rise to be an NFL head coach, only to be took down by the dysfunctional Cleveland Browns organization. I love that after being fired by the Browns he took his two years of pay and dedicated himself to being a better coach when he was when he was ready to return to the NFL. He is rejuvenated and ready to go. I think the Packers are extremely fortunate to get this guy and he could very well be the real MVP of the Packers this year.

The four preseason games didn’t give us any indication of what we will see Sunday night against the Bears. The defensive was basically playing a simple run or pass play call and the offense only saw Rodgers for one series and the starters all together for none. This is the new NFL, the preseason is for the youngsters trying to make the team. Teams can’t practice anymore so the preseason games are huge for those guys.

But I digress, I think the Sunday night you will see a new team on both sides of the ball. Something the Bears’ will not be expecting. This should be an easy win for the Packers and anything less would be catastrophic. My first prediction of the year is Packers 31, Bears 10.
