Excitement will be at an all-time high by the time we approach Super Bowl LVI. This would be the first mega-event to take place in the post-pandemic world. I sure am excited to attend the game and hear the roars of the stadium crowd once again. For some reason, I couldn’t attend the game last year. I ended up watching it on the NFL Network, which I got when I switched to one of the Spectrum internet plans. But it seems like in-stadium audiences will make a comeback soon.
The 56th iteration of the NFL’s flagship event will be played at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The NFL had originally intended to host Super Bowl LV at the Sofi Stadium but they chose Tampa Bay due to construction delays at the stadium. The event is set for February 13, 2022. That said, now seems like a good time to recall the teams that have won the most championships in NFL history. We’re taking the liberty to include teams that won the titles during the pre-Super Bowl days.
Green Bay Packers
The number one pick for obvious reasons. The Packers are one of the most dominant teams in the history of the National Football League (NFL). They sit atop the NFL championship mountain with most title wins, at 13. Nine of these wins were for the NFL championship. The remaining four are Super Bowl titles. Packers are also the only NFL team to secure a victory over fierce rivals AFL prior to the merger of the AFL and NFL.
A Brief History of Green Bay Packers
Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun founded the Green Bay Packers several months after the end of the first World War. Both Lambeau and Calhoun shared a rivalry over football during their high-school years. The two founded the Packers on August 11, 1919. This August will mark the 102nd anniversary of the Packers.
The Indian Packing Company was the original sponsor of the Packers. It was a meat packaging company that provided funds to Lambeau (who worked as a shipping clerk at the company) to purchase uniforms for the newly-formed team. The management handed over $500 ($7,500 in today’s value) to Lambeau to solicit equipment and uniforms for the team. Lambeau named the team after the company as it was part of his commitment to his employer.
The American Professional Football Association (APFA) permitted the Packers as a franchise on August 27, 1921. The founding year of the APFA is 1920. APFA renamed itself to the National Football League (NFL) in 1922. A series of financial troubles forced Lambeau and the company to forfeit the franchise for a year before he regained it back with the help of new sponsors.
The Glory Years
The arrival of Vince Lombardi kicked off a brilliant tenure for the Packers. Lombardi was a former assistant for New York Giants. He joined Packers as general manager and head coach on February 2, 1959. Under Lombardi’s watchful eye, Packers went on to dominate the game throughout the sixties. The team captured five World Championships, including the first two Super Bowl titles, within seven years. Lombardi’s locker room included star players like Jim Taylor, Bart Starr, Henry Jordan, and Dave Robinson.
The Bears are the team with the second-most NFL championships to their name. They have won a total of nine titles, including one Super Bowl victory. They are also the team with the most recorded victories in the NFL. Apart from championships, the Bears have contributed to the greatest number of enshrinements and retired jerseys.
New York Giants
New York Giants tally behind Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers with the most NFL title wins. They won four NFL championships during the pre-Super Bowl era. They won their first championship in 1927. The second win occurred in 1934. They scored the third victory in 1938. Their last pre-Super Bowl victory took place in 1956.
The Giants have four Super Bowl championships to their name. They were the winners of Super Bowl XXI in 1986. They clinched the 25th Super Bowl in 1990. The third victory came with Super Bowl XLII in 2007. The final victory came in 2011 with Super Bowl XLVI. More significantly, the Giants have made a total of 19 championship appearances. This is the highest number of championship appearances by an NFL franchise in the history of the game.
New England Patriots
Patriots have won the Super Bowl a record six times. They share the record with Pittsburgh Steeler. Tom Brady, regarded as one of the best players in the NFL right now, played his first 20 seasons with the Patriots.
