Packers hanging on by a thread

The Green Bay Packers pulled off another miracle Monday night, beating the 49ers on a last second field goal. At times the Packers look great, but at other times they look horrible. They just can’t seem to play a complete game. If that doesn’t change in two weeks, the Packers could be an also-ran by December.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is clearly not 100% healthy so maybe I should temper my criticism of him, but damn, for about 30 minutes of that game he looked more like David Whitehurst than a two-time MVP. But just like that, with a bad knee and a bloody elbow, Rodgers pulls off his second miracle comeback of the year.

Guessing Rodgers’ display of manhood might have increased the odds of him and girlfriend Danica Patrick staying together a little longer. If you think they can make it to the Super Bowl a visit to TopBet might be in order. No doubt Rodgers is playing through a serious injury and I need to back off a little with criticism.

The Packers certainly have a rising star in wide receiver Davante Adams, who was Rodgers main target in the two drives that won the game. Somehow the Packers need to find a way to start and sustain that combination the whole game. The Packers won’t get away with lulls like they had Monday in their next two games, which take them Los Angeles to face the Rams and then to New England,

The Packers offense should be better than it is. Yes, it is putting up 400 yards a game, but mostly because of its own early game failures. So they are passing almost every play even though their running game is averaging five yards a carry. Taking advantage of the running game will help protect Rodgers and give the defense a break as well.

Aaron Jones got the start at running back and was awesome again. But he did have a huge miss on a blitz pickup which resulted in a sack. Still, head coach Mike McCarthy simply does not know how to coordinate a running game. I guess I should stop bitching about that, too, because it isn’t going to change.

On defense the Packers took a step back. They gave up 401 yards to the 49ers but it did make some key stops in the second half, the biggest being Kevin King’s interception in the last two minutes. I think the 49ers are going to be a good team under Kyle Shanahan so I am not overly concerned about this game. His teams have owned the Packers’ in the past.

Hopefully the Packers do a lot of self-scouting during the bye week and come back ready to go. I have a hunch the 49ers upset the Rams in San Francisco next week and the Packers hand them a second straight loss the following week. Just a hunch.
