Game can’t come soon enough

I can’t wait for Monday. Win or lose at least the Packers can get on with their season and focus on the task at hand. While I first wished the schedule makers would have brought the Vikings to Green Bay in late December, putting the hype to bed with nine games to go is much better in the long run.

The Packers are focusing on their team goals which hopefully won’t be played out until January. One has to wonder how focused Brett Favre will be after Sunday, especially if the Vikings beat the Packers again. In Favre’s mind, no matter what he says, it would be mission accomplished with half the season to play. The Devil made me do it, but the thought crossed my mind that a loss by the Packers would be almost as good as a win. Thankfully, righteousness quickly returned and I dismissed that thought. Good over evil again.

The fact is this game is as even as they get. Both teams have played almost the same schedule and are separated by only one game in the loss column. The Packers rank higher in on both sides of the ball but have weaknesses on the offensive line. The Vikings have the veteran QB who has injected life into a once one-sided offense, but defensively the Vikings are very one-sided.

All the Packers need to do is give quarterback Aaron Rodgers time to pass and even if the running game struggles, he should pick apart the Vikings secondary, much like he did four weeks ago when he threw for his career high 384 yards against the Queens. I hope T.J. Lang starts at left tackle only because Cliffy has only played much football the last six weeks and hasn’t looked all that good when he did play. A healthy Lang is better at this point.

On the right side I would start Barbre but get Tauscher in for a series or two, or if need be, more. Even coming off a year out of football I feel better about Tausch than I do Cliffy. Why is that? I don’t know.

The Packers will miss Finley if he can’t play but Rodgers has confidence in Havner, so it might not be as bad first thought. With the home field, the crowd screaming every time Favre steps under center, the Packers have a great chance to knock off the division leaders.

I just can’t wait until it is over.

From the “Icon” Fox Sports article on the main page:
The tempest of emotion leading to Sunday’s Vikings-Packers game could make for one of the most awkward homecomings in sports history. Favre, perhaps the league’s most emotion-driven player, will try to tune it all out.

“The people that have jumped ship or whatever completely, what can I do?” Favre said. “I’m not going to concern myself with it.”
    ============================================================

It’s insulting from several different angles that he uses the phrase “jump ship”. Quite a telling couple of sentences actually. The egomaniac obviously thinks most fans cheered for him and not the TEAM. Secondly, when did he ever concern himself with the team or its fans? One of the things I’ve noticed missing over the past 1.5 years of turmoil is an outpouring of “Favre Stories”, specifically community service related “feel good” stuff. OK, the team filled an airplane with hurricane-relief supplies at the bidding of BF, but what did he ever do? Jump ship my @ss – Merriam Webster should put this tools photo under the definition of hyprocrite…

P.S. He’s my fantasy football QB this week. Fourteen team league with Carson Palmer on bye, there’s nobody else available on waivers. I’ll gladly take the fantasy loss and hope he throws three picks and loses a couple fumbles on sacks!

“We don’t want to lose………… It would make my day if the Pack absolutely whipped the Vikes but in the grander scheme, nothing will be decided by this one game…… win or lose……… ”

Is this like the CYA stuff I’m always accused of?

HI-FRICKIN-LARIOUS! We have a shot at a piece of the division lead, getting even with the Vikes as opposed to being swept, and proving (to me if not anyone else) that we belong in the conversation in the NFC.

But if we lay an egg, whatever, it’s only one game. Are you frickin’ kidding me?

” Is this like the CYA stuff I’m always accused of? ”

You’re falling for all the BF hype around this game………. Making it out to be more than it really is……………. I’m not……………….. Everything you say is true but everything you say is not the ONLY case scenario for a successful season…….. The Cardinals lost last year’s SB 27-23 after going 9-7 during the regular season………… The Giants won the SB the year before as a wildcard entry & had to win 3 road games to even get into the SB…………

Although thrashing the Vikes & an ultimate tie for the North Division lead at 6-2 is the ideal scenario…………. It’s not the ONLY scenario the Pack have……… I still believe that there are only two things an NFL team needs to do:… 1) Qualify for the playoffs… 2) Peak going into the playoffs…………. The path a team takes is irrelevant.

I support the Pack no matter what happens this Sunday because the season is still only 7 games long with nine to play (after Sunday)…………… You support the Pack as long as they win……….. That’s CYA on your part.

  7. packer_bob says:

“We have a shot at a piece of the division lead, getting even with the Vikes as opposed to being swept, and proving (to me if not anyone else) that we belong in the conversation in the NFC. ”

What part of that sentence has to do with BF again?

  8. Rocky70 says:

The hype around this game is all about BF…………. The real importance of this game has little to do with BF other than how he plays in the game…………

Your body of historical posts have always painted you as a BF Ballwasher …… Please, don’t make me prove it with your own words………… You can’t all of a sudden change your spots………… Why even try ?

  9. packer_bob says:

Just as in the first game, the media is hyping the Favre drama, and I don’t blame them as they have an obvious incentive to do so.

But just as in the first game, BF has very little to do with the big picture imo. If Rosenfels were the starter, the game would mean the same thing as far as I’m concerned.

My respect for BF hasn’t changed. I just don’t see what he has to do with it at this point, which is why I didn’t refer to him in the first place. But somehow you found a way to infer it anyway, as usual. Your body of posts has painted you as bitter, BF obsessive with an inability to move on. You can’t even read a sentence that doesn’t bring him up without somehow thinking he was.

  10. Rocky70 says:

You’re right………. I have nothing but distain for BF………. Last I looked he was the starting QB for the Vikings.

    PB

GB is 4-2……. Their two losses have been to teams with a combined record of 11-3……. Their two losses are by 7 points each………. They are coming off two Vs with a combined score of 57-3……… They have the 3rd ranked defense in the NFL………. They have the 8th ranked offense in the NFL……………. They also have at QB the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Month for October………. R. Grant is 6th in the NFL in rushing with 495 yards…………. and on & on.

    Regardless, you say:

” and proving (to me if not anyone else) that we belong in the conversation in the NFC. ”

Using facts & figures & national opinion, I’d say GB is already in the conversation in the NFC…………. Solid PackFans can see it ……….. Obviously, you can’t.

  11. packer_bob says:

Their two losses were much worse than the final score indicated imo.

You can throw rankings around all you want. I can assure you, there are more than 5 backs in the league I would take over Grant, for example. Much of this movement in the rankings occurred over the last two weeks, which to me are irrelevant.

My point is a pretty simple one: If we’re really any good, we ought to be able to beat a good team at home. We’ll see tomorrow.

  12. kevin says:

Packers are a 500 team will show us all that on Sunday at 3:15

  13. Rocky70 says:

” My point is a pretty simple one: If we’re really any good, we ought to be able to beat a good team at home. We’ll see tomorrow. ”

I believe this also……. but I don’t believe it’s a do or die like many are saying…… If we were playing our 13th or 14th game of the season then I’d be inclined to fully agree………. This is only the 7th game of the season with nine to go……. Included in those nine are the Cowboys, Ravens, Steelers, Cardinals & even the 49′ers …. There will be many opportunities to pick up ‘quality wins’.

I love how you just simply reject anything that blows holes in your argument….. (IE… rankings don’t count.. the last two games don’t count……… Grant doesn’t count)………….. Come on PB, you’re better than this…… You sound like this kevin dude.

  14. packer_bob says:

Where were we ranked after the first four games? Where are we ranked now? Do you think the rankings might be skewed just a little bit based on who we played the last two weeks?

It’s not that I’m saying we’re not ranked 3rd defense, it’s that I’m questioning just how valid that is at this point. This seems reasonable to me given how the D looked at Minnie and against Cincy. It’s very hard to gauge whether they’ve really improved or the level of competition just made them look better.

It’s like the 2001 Bears team that went 13-3. (Two losses to us, heh-heh. I was at the one in Chicago and it was beyoooootiful!) Anyway, yeah, they were 13-3 but they were the luckiest damn 13-3 team you ever saw and benefitted from a pretty light schedule. All the Bears fans around here had stars in there eyes and couldn’t see how they were actually a just above average team and not really dominant.

The Bears got their asses kicked by Philly, at home, in their first playoff game, which I had been telling co-workers all week was exactly what was going to happen.

Are we the 2001 Bears? I don’t know yet. Please understand, I’m not saying we’re a bad team. I’m just not sure we’re truly a good one yet, either.

  15. LarryTex says:

Not even Jon sounded like kevin.

  16. packer_bob says:

Btw, Rocky, I agree with you that this game isn’t truly do or die. If we did lose, there is still alot of season left and plenty of ways to make the playoffs.

I do believe it is a huge barometer game for us though. Big win, we gain mega-confidence, momentum and all things will seem possible. Big loss—I don’t want to think about what that means.

  17. TRIP says:

WHYARE WE TALKING ABOUT FAVRE WHEN THE PLAYOFFS ARE ON THE LINE?!?!

The Cowboys, Giants, Falcons and Saints could all have better records than us at the end of the season. I think 3 of them doing that is LIKELY! What does that mean? It puts a strain on the likelihood of getting a wildcard spot!

The Vikings will lose a few games, but possibly not enough to open the door for us if we go down 2 games to them AND lose our tiebreaker. MIN is going to beat DET after their bye, as well as CAR and atleast one game versus CHI. That means when they play SEA, @ARI, CIN, @CHI, and NYG(they might not have anything to play for) all they would need to do is win 3 games (like SEA, ARI, and CHI or NYG) and they are at 12-4. They are not a bad team, this is a huge possibly. That would mean, we would need to be perfect after losing to them to win the division. Not likely. So basically, if we lose to them, they go 12-4 and split the non-gimme games, our season could be a wrap. We need to win.

I’m tired of all the discussion about Favre, he’s a Viking, it sucks for those that still like him, but it is what it is. They killed us in MIN and have a chance of beating us at Lambeau. And more than our egos being hurt, and Favre’s being boosted, our SEASON could be in jeopardy! If we lose tomorrow, and send the Queens into their bye with a win, we can probably kiss the division goodbye, and would probably need some help at the end of the season to get a wildcard.

  18. LarryTex says:

I think TRIP makes a valid arguement, but so does p_b; even tho under the p_b senario it would be a hell of a lot tougher and we would have to win games not earlier thought we could have. But thats football in the NFL, every year, for every team. Arizona last year, and the Giants the year before are prime examples.

I do reject, however, the reasoning that MIN kicked our ass last time. In the end they beat us by a TD after all those sacks, and AP with his 55, and Arod throwing for more than a hundred than BF. This reasoning that they laid down after having us beat in the 3rd qtr doesn’t hold with me; the score, the penalties, the stats, sacks, rushes, ints, etc, its all part of the game.

I think MIN played as well as they could the first game at home. We on the other hand have nowhere to go but up, are gaining confidence, and strength along with the experience of having our starters go. I think, further, that Lang and Barbre will man-up, the TEs (even if its Lee and Havner) will be there, and Arod will have more time to hit Driver short and Jennings long. Not sure, but its possible that Green helps and Cliffy and Tausch provide relief. Bigby will add a dimention up close leaving Collins deep to roam and back up the corners. Further, our nickle will allow the two corners to play man to man and they cannot be beat.

Thats as positive as I can get, Pack by 4.

  19. justawake says:

I don’t understand why some on this board are trying to downplay the importance of this game. Granted the other nine games on the schedule combined are more important than one game, but this is THE most important single game of the regular season and goes a long way to determine whether there will be a post season.

It seems to me that you guys are preparing for a loss. I will be shocked if we lose this game. This game is far more important for us than it is for the Queens. Even those picking the Pack are cautious with the “if we do this” scenarios. We need this game badly and I believe we’ll win convincingly. Pack 38, Queens 13.

And for all of you going to the game, if you want to get into BF’s head, give him no reaction at all when he steps on the field. I know this won’t happen, but it would be hilarious. He’s expecting a huge response on his return to Lambeau. Silence would freak him out. Booing a Packer Legend is classless and beneath PackFans. We are not Phily.

    11. Falcons 4-2
    12. Eagles 4-2
    13. Packers 4-2
Know need to go on boys were just not that good. If we dont make the playoffs its time to boot T.T and M.M out. 5 years of this shit is enough.

LarryTex- All that and we only win by 4?

  23. 25 Yrs Pack says:

If you can’t figure out why we are talking about bf, I suggest you take the next flight to europe and start watching their football. My god…

  24. Kevin says:

We have a lot bigger problems than BF, Starts at the GM than to the Coach. Best player on the team by far is Rodgers without a question. Tick Tock on Brett but what are we left with after that. Penalties up the Ass, A future pro bowl quaterback we can’t defend. Thank god for Woody at least you know he will make some plays tomorrow. My guess 9 or more penalties on the pack tomorrow.

  25. 25 Yrs Pack says:

This is the biggest game of the regular season, by far. No other game will come close. It is a must win, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN News are the only channels I watch, If anything but a win happens, I will not be turning on my television for a while. IT IS all about BF, dont kid yourself, its the biggest sports story of the year. The fact the people are suggesting that there is more importance with this game than just beating bf, is all out stupidity. This is 3 years in the making, hell maybe 5 years. This week is all about this week. It’s not even worth mentioning playoff ramifications, the announcers aren’t gonna, infact nobody outside of WI is gonna this week. BF vs The Pack Organization, thats how it is. Root for the Pack in this final game of a separate 2 game regular season we are having vs the queens this year.

  26. Kevin says:

Im sorry think I have been taken wrong.. I agree about this game and what you are saying. Just was trying to point out we still got some pretty big problems. have a good night. GO Pack

  27. 25 Yrs Pack says:

Oh no not you Kevin, I’m talking about all the posts that have been going on the are trying to pretend the BF angle isn’t the biggest thing about this week.

  28. 25 Yrs Pack says:

Everyone needs to get their bf dart board up and focus on ruining his day. Get it all out now, this sunday, because after this game, people need to shut up for good about bf, unless their is another meeting in the playoffs, now is everyone’s chance to vent their bf anger. I’m out to crush that queens qb, I cant even remember if they have a running back, or a defense.

  29. Sammy says:

I like this Kevin guy. Where did he come from? Finally someone else sick and tired of Packer administration and coaching.

3:28 in the morning… A little less than 12 hours till the game. I can’t wait for this game to start!!!!!

Al. I just about woke the whole hotel i bet when i read your “but the thought crossed my mind that a loss by the Packers would be almost as good as a win.” THAT IS ONE OF THE DUMBEST THINGS YOU HAVE EVER WRITTEN! (and you have written some doosies).

This a a complete must win. The Pack must win this for playoff reasons TT and MM must win for job reasons, and team just needs to win for plain old pride.

I only get to make one or two games a year (an 11 hour drive makes it tough), but this game promises to be one of the games I will talk about for the next ten years.

If AR isn’t on his butt more than a couple times I think we have a great chance to take this one to the bank.. GO PACK!

  32. packer_bob says:

WTF? This game has nothing to do with BF aside from the fact he is currently QB’ing for a hated division rival. As far as subplots go this is good one, but it’s a subplot nonetheless.

I’m quoting Flava Flav for the first (and hopefully the last) time: “Don’t believe the Hype!”

  33. Rocky70 says:

” As far as subplots go this is good one, but it’s a subplot nonetheless. ”

PB, you have to understand that some of these dudes base everything on what they see & hear only………….. instead of a little independent thought……….. the media is making the game all about BF so they naturally think it’s all about BF……….. when how BF plays in the game is the only important issue regarding BF……… It has something to do with lacking time on this earth…….. to see through the fog.

  34. packer_bob says:

    Rocky,

We actually concur on a point? I’m not sure who’s going soft on this but I kinda like it!

  35. packer_bob says:

“PB, you have to understand that some of these dudes base everything on what they see & hear only”

I know—what a waste. To only use 2 of the six senses available to you and ignore the other 4 at your disposal is worthless imo.

That’s why my motto is if you can’t lick it, it doesn’t really exist. This has proven itself to be an inconvienent motto at certain times (particularly that time I toured the sausuge factory) but on the upside, that is also how I met my spectacularly beautiful wife!

  36. Lew says:

Although I have been as critical of management as anyone that all goes out the window on game day. Especially this game day. I will be tailgating in 3 hours and hoarse after the game from the booing I will do everytime that douche bag in purple takes the field. If anyone else reads this and is going please, please boo and make as much noise as possibe. We don’t pump in noise like the a-holes at the Dome so it is time to go. If you can’t tell, I am a little excited

Have a great time at the game Lew! Wish I was going!

  38. Sammy says:

The history of “classy” Packer fans do not boo! We are not Philly, Oakland, etc. I really don’t like the GOLD package tickets as those folks from Milwaukee will boo the Packers at times. Real, sophisicated, classy Packer fans welcome the enemy then chear when they are distroyed. I hope those at Lambeau continue the tradition of class. Let’s not look like some of those other team’s fans in the NFL…We are known for being BETTER and DIFFERENT…even you Lew!

  39. Lew says:

Are you insane Sammy? Whatever dude, I guarantee the boos FAR outweigh the cheers. And that is the way it should be

  40. admin says:

Sammy must have never have been to a divisional game at Lambeau Field. We ALWAYS boo the opposing team! We even boo the trainer when he comes out before the team. Hell, while it is getting harder we even booed the Lions when they came out two weeks ago.

  41. Sammy says:

Yes, insane I am Lew. But look at the history of Packer fans. Go ahead, look like Philly or Oakland. Maybe you can burn down Green Bay after we win the next championship like they do in Chicago and LA. Step up man. The boos may FAR outweigh the cheers but that does not mean it is right.

See you with your torch and 9mm after we win our next title.

  42. kevin says:

My pick to click today…..Rodgers and Jennings going to be a huge day…..Go Pack

  43. jonnyfootballhero says:

Sammy – I agreed with a lot of the points you’ve made in the past week and defended you when some said not to post anymore, but I totally disagree with you on not about booing the rival. The “12th” man should always make it as difficult as possible for the rival team. It’s putting the home field advantage at work for your team. I agree that the fans shouldn’t ever throw anything at the the other team (snowballs, beer bottles, batteries, etc…), but being as loud as possible is perfectly alright. I want the Packers to win and any help the fans can give, I’m all for.
