The case for Eddie Lacy

The Green Bay Packers have several free agents I would like to see them sign but tonight I make the case for Eddie Lacy. The Packers need a running back, and while Lacy has had his struggles the last two years, he’s still the best option available to them.

Last year Lacy was off to a good start in what was to be his comeback year from an injury-plagued 2015 that also included a benching for a missed curfew. All offseason he said and did the right things and while not exactly svelte, he had lost weight and was starting to look like the old Eddie Lacy again.

In limited action to start the season he had a healthy 5.1 yards per carry average and the Packers’ offense was showing signs of life again. Lacy was well on his way to a second straight 100-yard game against the Giants in week five when he hurt his foot in the third quarter and that was pretty much the end. He tried to play the next week against Dallas but dropped out early.

Without Lacy the Packers had virtually no running game even with Ty Montgomery eventually switching over from receiver halfway through the year. Montgomery had his moments, but seems soft to me, can only carry the ball a couple of times and has to take a break.

The Packers could draft somebody like Christian McCaffrey but he’s not really big enough to take the pounding either. Lacy is the Packers best option and probably wouldn’t be that expensive on a 1-year prove it deal. I think they should get it done.
